A cocktail menu written around books

The brass bar and marble counter sit beneath a handmade chandelier, with fireplaces in the room.

The room is a good reason to pause inside the Château. The official page describes its circular brass bar, marble top, handmade chandelier and fireplaces; the hotel’s own venue site puts the St. Lawrence view at the centre of the visit. Come when you want to spend time over a glass and perhaps order something to eat. There is no table reservation to arrange first: the official instruction is to go directly to the bar.

Books give the cocktail list its thread. The menu says the room’s bookcases inspired the collection and links individual drinks to named authors and works. Sakurai draws on Banana Yoshimoto’s Kitchen. Its ingredients take strawberry and cherry-blossom tea into Seedlip Spice 94, verjus, house orgeat, celery bitters and white balsamic, finished with strawberry pearls. The menu marks it at approximately 0% ABV. Choose it for the fruit, tea and tartness.

Uprooted takes its cue from Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Carrot juice meets pineapple, sea buckthorn, coconut-and-spiced-squash syrup, falernum, vanilla and beetroot around Noa Garden. Its menu illustration shows a tall, colourful drink, with the carrot as the starting point for a journey into tropical flavours. The menu also marks this one at approximately 0% ABV. The ingredients make it quite a different glass from the strawberry-and-tea Sakurai, even though the printed price is the same.

Amor turns to Luis Sepúlveda’s The Old Man Who Read Love Stories. It combines banana liqueur and white vermouth with aloe, sea buckthorn, eucalyptus, vanilla and soda, at approximately 7.5% ABV on the menu. Gravité, inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, is stronger at approximately 14%: reposado tequila, grapefruit-and-lychee cordial, Campari, Cocchi Rosa and rose water, with Monna & Filles fortified blackcurrant wine floating above the clarified drink. Ask for the ingredients that appeal to you before choosing by the book you know.

The kitchen can turn the drink into a meal. A cheese-and-charcuterie board comes with marinades; beef carpaccio has truffle dressing, fried onion and Parmesan. The burger uses 1608 cheese, lettuce, tomato and spicy mayonnaise, and the menu says beef burgers are served well done. Among the vegetables are a mushroom skewer with birch-and-stout glaze and cashew cheese, and seasonal vegetables with herb purée and Blackburn cheddar emulsion. Choose plates around whether you want a small snack or dinner at the table.

The sea has its own section. Oysters come in 6 with mignonette, raspberry ponzu and hot sauce; fish ceviche has radish, apple, serrano and coriander. There is a shrimp cocktail, while caviar is offered with classic accompaniments. To finish, the Queen Elizabeth cake uses dates and coconut, and a plate of 6 mignardises follows the chef’s selection. These are the dishes on the food menu read on 17 October 2026; ask the team about allergies when choosing among seafood, nuts and dairy.

The bar’s reputation has a named source. Canada’s 100 Best places 1608 at number 41 on its 2026 bar list and gives it that year’s People’s Choice Award. Its entry points readers towards the windows over Dufferin Terrace and the river, and to Québec cheese and charcuterie. That is a useful picture of the visit: a cocktail with a story, local things to eat and time looking out over the city’s river.
