Why Hurawalhi, beyond the restaurant

5.8 is why many people first hear of Hurawalhi; the island has more to it.

Hurawalhi opened on 1 December 2016 on an island about 400 by 165 metres in the north of Lhaviyani Atoll, and takes guests aged 15 and over only (anniversary, factsheet, getting here). From Malé’s international airport the seaplane takes 40 minutes (getting here, factsheet). In 2026 the Forbes Travel Guide rated it Five-Star (official site).

The house reef is sheltered and shallow, a few fin kicks off the beach, with resident hawksbill turtles, and mask and fins are free for the whole stay (house reef). The marine biology centre works with the Manta Trust and takes guests out to look for manta rays (getting here).

Above the water there is Canneli, the buffet; Kashibo, Asian cooking over the lagoon with teppanyaki; JFK, which is vegan; and the Coco Bar beside the infinity pool (factsheet). All-Inclusive Plus covers meals at Canneli, Kashibo and JFK, excluding teppanyaki, with drinks at the Coco Bar until 1am, but never 5.8 (dining).

Dinner at 5.8, from the spiral staircase to the last course

The 6pm sitting, the one the resort suggests for seeing the reef first in daylight and then at night.

  • Book in the app, not for arrival day

Hotel guests book 5.8 in the Hurawalhi app; the resort advises against your arrival and departure days, and dietary needs go to its events team before you fly (7-course dinner, 5.8).

  • Shoes off, down the spiral staircase

5.8 is a barefoot room with a smart-casual code: shoes stay at the entrance, then a spiral staircase leads down to one of 10 tables (5.8, factsheet).

  • Reef fish, king crab, yellowfin

The sea menu opens with a carpaccio of Maldivian reef fish in dashi beurre blanc, then Alaskan king crab and local yellowfin tuna, marinated and finished with caviar (sea dinner menu).

  • The reef at feeding time

The dinner sitting falls when marine life is most active, which is why the resort suggests it for watching the reef change from daylight to night (7-course dinner).

  • Toothfish, then lobster

Glacier 51 toothfish with a morel and clam emulsion, then Canadian lobster with Café de Paris butter; a meat menu and a vegan one follow the same 7 courses (sea dinner menu, vegan dinner menu).

  • Golden Gem, petits fours, the Coco Bar

Dessert is a strawberry and white chocolate mousse inside a golden chocolate sphere; upstairs the Coco Bar stays open until 1am (sea dinner menu, factsheet).
