Orient Express La Minerva, a hotel near the Pantheon in Rome: 3 minutes from the portico

Who La Minerva suits, if the Pantheon is the point

Why choose it

You want to wake up behind the Pantheon, dine on a roof facing its dome and walk the historic centre without a taxi.

Prices

When to look elsewhere

You want the dome from your own window for less: the Albergo del Senato and the Sole al Pantheon face the portico from the square, and The Pantheon Iconic has 2 Pantheon suites at less than half the price.

Other hotels

2 centuries of hotel behind the Pantheon

La Minerva did not move next to the Pantheon for the view: it has been a hotel on this square for more than 200 years.

Palazzo Fonseca was built in 1620 and occupies a whole island on Piazza della Minerva, steps from the Pantheon, says the official FAQ; it became one of Rome’s grand hotels in 1811, by the MICHELIN Guide’s account, while Andrew Mourby dates the conversion by the French hotelier Joseph Sauve to 1810 (Famous Hotels).

Stendhal lodged here between 1834 and 1836, when the building was called Palazzo Conti, and began the Vie de Henri Brulard on 23 November 1835; in 1917 Picasso, Cocteau and Olga went up to the roof to take photographs (Famous Hotels). The roof is now Gigi Rigolatto, open to the public since May 2025 (Gigi).

The Italian search for a hotel at the Pantheon also finds 2 namesakes: Hotel Pantheon, a 4-star on Via dei Pastini that calls itself 20 metres from the monument (Hotel Pantheon), and The Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel, a 5-star on Via di Santa Chiara (The Pantheon Iconic). Neither is La Minerva, which reopened in April 2025 as the first Orient Express hotel (official site).

In 2025 the MICHELIN Guide gave La Minerva 2 Keys (MICHELIN), in a year when Rome counted 19 Key hotels (MICHELIN); of the 8 hotels compared below only one other, Six Senses Rome, holds a Key (MICHELIN). In the 140 Google reviews with a text written since the reopening, guests write most about the staff, the roof and the location (Google reviews).
