A return to fine dining in a Gilded Age bank

Café Carmellini opened with the hotel in the autumn of 2023, in the mansion McKim, Mead & White built in 1907.

Andrew Carmellini, a James Beard Award winner, calls it his return to fine dining after 30 years of cooking, with a menu that joins Italian and French cooking to a New York sensibility (Café Carmellini). Grub Street recalls that he started at Lespinasse and opened Café Boulud for Daniel Boulud, before Locanda Verde, The Dutch, Lafayette and Bar Primi (Grub Street).

The building was a Gilded Age bank, Grub Street writes, and Martin Brudnizki dressed the room in blue velvet banquettes, glass peacocks over the bar and a canopy of trees down the middle, with a wraparound mezzanine for privacy (Grub Street). The MICHELIN Guide describes the crab mille-feuille, the scallops Cardoz in memory of Floyd Cardoz and the squab en croûte with foie gras (MICHELIN Guide).

The Infatuation, in January 2024, wrote of excellent cocktails, generous portions and an incredible free bread (The Infatuation). The lobster cannelloni with caviar cost $75 then; today’s menu lists a lobster cannelloni della casa at $49 (menus).

We read the scores on 5 October 2026: 4.8 on Resy from 7,500 diners, 4.5 on Google from 595 reviews. Google’s listing closes breakfast at 10.45am on weekdays; the restaurant’s site says 11am.
