Give this place a whole day: warm water leading outdoors, a walk through the gardens and dinner booked for the evening. I’d come as a couple; a family holiday built around daily swims needs a different hotel.

Is it for you?

The Signature Suite leaves room for time upstairs, with a sitting area and dressing room in the Main Hall. For a weekend together I’d settle dinner first, then the rest.

I’d ask for
The Signature Suite and an arrival-night dinner table, with the times confirmed.
Worth knowing
The tasting-menu restaurant needs a reservation; resident cancellations within 7 days may be charged at the full menu price.
The Signature Suite

Like a regular

The Norton Bar, with wood panelling and armchairs
  1. The part of the house

For the atmosphere, I’d choose a Grand Suite, with original fireplaces and views of the Rill Garden. Ask for the Main Hall if that is the Grantley you have in mind.

  2. The restaurant bill

Food and drink carry an optional 12.5% service charge. You can ask to have it removed; it is not a compulsory addition to the bedroom rate.

  3. Before you leave

Keep swimwear and travelling clothes in a separate bag so a final swim does not mean unpacking again.

What Grantley Hall is

The historic Hall and the Fountains Wing offer different sorts of room. In the old house, you might choose a fireplace and the details that survived its earlier life; in the newer wing, rooms gather round the atrium. A category photograph doesn’t promise an identical bedroom. I’d settle on the part of the house first.

The estate grows ingredients for the kitchen as well as flowers for the grounds. The Taste of Home menu at Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall follows Yorkshire produce and the kitchen garden. Fletchers keeps a more flexible rhythm, from breakfast to supper. EightyEight brings Asian-inspired cooking, while the Norton Bar takes you back to the house’s oak panelling.

Between meals, head outside. The 38-acre estate includes the Japanese Garden, Rill Garden and rose garden. I’d leave the afternoon unplanned after the walk; this is the sort of day that makes me stay overnight rather than stop for lunch.

We choose the hotels of this guide ourselves, one at a time: no one pays to be in it.

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Grantley Hall’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests remember walks through the gardens and how well the grounds are kept.

  2. Room

Guests like the rooms’ comfort and carefully finished interiors.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember the welcome from the porters and the attention they find again in the spa.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast pleases guests ordering it upstairs as well as those celebrating with family.

  5. Price

Guests accept the high bill when service keeps up; delays can change their minds.

211 guests said so on Google, from 14 January 2025 to 1 November 2026. Stored Google reviews dated from 4 November 2024; collections may stop at 300 or 2,000 reviews. The latest 500 with text, or every available text when fewer, are read the same way. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay among the UK’s country-house hotels: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 4 November 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against among the UK’s country-house hotels:

Price: for 2, the night of 16 November 2026, from £664 on Google Hotels on 3 November 2026.

When I’d go

I’d compare 16 November 2026 from £664 with 7 December from £992 and 6 January 2027 from £684. These are references for specific dates; I’d recheck the same room and its inclusions before choosing.

A day with no hurry

Morning

Breakfast at Fletchers

I’d take time over breakfast before heading into the gardens.

Before lunch

A walk through the grounds

Walk to the Japanese Garden, then continue towards the rose garden. The day can stay within the estate.

Afternoon

An afternoon with no plans

After the walk, I’d leave time for the spa rather than arrange another outing straight away.

Evening

Your table is waiting

Give the tasting menu one evening and EightyEight another. The restaurants alone are enough reason to stay more than a night.

The suite and an early mistake

A birthday guest loved the Lady Caroline Suite, its emperor bed and garden views. They also describe being shown into an occupied suite by mistake before staff apologised and took them to the correct room.

A disappointing return

One guest reports several previous stays they found perfect. Their latest visit, for the Halloween ball, changed their view: they complain about staff conduct at the end of the evening and say they will not return.

Questions before you book

How much does a night cost?

A night for 2 adults started at £684 on 6 January 2027; £885 on 24 March 2027; £962 on 18 June 2027. These are nights searched separately; check the category, meals, taxes and cancellation terms in the chosen offer. Prices from Google Hotels, 3 November 2026.

Does an overnight stay include the spa?

Yes, residents have access to the spa facilities from 1pm on arrival day until 1pm on departure day, for adults aged 18 and over. For a treatment, check your rate’s inclusions and book an appointment.

Can you book the spa without staying overnight?

Yes, day and evening experiences are available for non-residents. Advance booking and prepayment are required, and access hours depend on the experience booked.

Which rooms can have twin beds?

Deluxe Rooms and Accessible Rooms offer twin-bed configurations. Specify your preference when booking.

What are check-in and check-out times?

Bedrooms are available from 3pm and check-out is by 11am. A late check-out costs extra and depends on availability.

Can non-residents eat at Grantley Hall?

Yes. The restaurants and bars welcome non-residents. Book a table; the fine-dining restaurant cannot accommodate walk-ins.

When is breakfast served?

Fletchers serves breakfast from 7.30am to 10.30am.

Are connecting rooms available?

Yes, subject to availability. I’d have both categories and their beds written on the confirmation rather than relying on the word “connecting”.

What happens if I cancel my stay?

A standard booking takes the first night as a non-refundable deposit, transferable to a future booking subject to availability. Cancellation within 72 hours of arrival is charged for the full stay. Prepaid and special offers are non-refundable and non-transferable; check your chosen rate’s terms.

How does a large wedding change the booking?

Wellington Arch and The Peninsula London beyond a green lawn

The Peninsula London

I’d start with a Grand Premier Park room and its view of Wellington Arch, then make time for the long indoor pool. The Deluxe looks into the courtyard. This is a London stay with room for the hotel itself: a morning swim, a walk and dinner upstairs.

The arched entrance to Corinthia London, with columns and small trees against the pale façade

Corinthia London

I’d leave an evening unplanned here: a swim, a table downstairs, then upstairs. I’d choose it for a London trip where coming back is part of the pleasure; for days spent entirely out, I’d book somewhere simpler.

A terrace at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park with pink sofas, breakfast on the table and a member of the team in front of the park

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London

I’d begin London with the park and decide the rest later. The Hyde Park outlook is worth paying for if you mean to enjoy it upstairs too; for a room used only for sleep, start with the courtyard.

A car outside the white portico and entrance to the Lanesborough

The Lanesborough

Dressing for dinner would be part of the pleasure here; I’d keep the morning free for the park. If you prefer a spare, understated bedroom, the fabrics and gilding ask for a different taste.
