The King’s Course
James Braid’s course, opened in 1919: a round costs hotel guests £250 in October 2026 and £140 in November, on the official green fees.
Gleneagles, at Auchterarder in Perthshire, is a 1924 railway hotel on an 850-acre estate with 3 championship golf courses, hawks, gundogs, horses and a station on the London–Inverness line.
A week here, month by monthFor families and golfers who want 3 or 4 days without leaving the estate, Gleneagles starts at £390 for one night for 2 adults in January 2027: the lowest seller’s price on Google. For the hush of a country house, choose a smaller one: Gleneagles is large and busy.

Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
I would ask for an Estate Room in Braid House: about 40 m², a working fireplace and, in most, a balcony over the entrance and the Ochil Hills, close to the children’s clubs and the pool.
Look at 18–20 January 2027: single nights for 2 adults were £390 to £395 on Google, read 15 October 2026, and £394 to £395 from 25 to 27 January. The dearest night shown, 2 January 2027, was £3,827.
Expect a discretionary 5% service charge on the room rate and 12.5% on dining and activities. A dog up to the size of a Labrador adds £100 a night; the estate kennels cost £40 a night.
The Strathearn takes no breakfast bookings and is usually busiest from 9am to 10am; leave the order form on your door the night before, and room service brings breakfast to your room at the hour you choose.
The Caledonian Railway planned it, and Gleneagles has a station of its own; James Braid’s King’s and Queen’s courses opened on 1 May 1919, 5 years before the hotel (history). Today the estate runs to 850 acres at the foot of the Ochil Hills: 3 championship courses plus the 9-hole Wee Course, the shooting school, gundogs, hawks, horses, off-road tracks and Frandy Water’s wood-fired sauna. The 205 bedrooms and 28 suites are in the 1924 house and in Braid House, the wing opened in 2002.
You eat without leaving. Breakfast, in every rate, is the Scullery buffet in The Strathearn’s dining room, which at night serves 3 courses for £125, with trolleys at the table and a piano. Andrew Fairlie, 2 Michelin stars since 2006, opens every evening from 6pm; The Birnam grills over an open fire and The Dormy, at the clubhouse, does pizza and tandoor. The Century Bar keeps over 400 whiskies.
The bikes, the pitch and putt and the pools are free; the rest is paid for: £140 a head for the hawks, £165 for clay shooting, £250 for a round of golf in October 2026 and £140 in November. Children have Little Glen up to 8, The Den up to 15 and the family pool. On busy days allow for waiting: the FAQs themselves name 9 to 10am as breakfast’s busiest hour.

What do Gleneagles’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The estate, its lawns kept like greens and the hills all round come up in almost every account; the nearest town is a drive away, and a few guests say so.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests praise spacious rooms, comfortable beds and bathrooms with heated floors; some mention thin walls, dated air conditioning or windows without a view in the smaller rooms.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember the doormen in kilts and tweed and courteous staff everywhere, from the bars to the pursuits; on busy days there is a wait at check-in.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The Strathearn buffet impresses with its choice, and many call it the best they have seen; on full mornings there is a wait for a table and the service slows.
5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. For many it is the price of a special occasion, gladly paid; others count the extras on top of the room, from the pursuits to the restaurants.
On staff and service it shares first place with Cromlix among the 6 hotels compared in the Scottish countryside.
On the bill it comes ahead of the 5 other hotels it is compared with in the Scottish countryside.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 8 March 2023 to 9 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Scottish countryside: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 15 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in the Scottish countryside:
