Gleneagles afternoon tea in the Glendevon: the 2026 menu, the price and the hours

Gleneagles afternoon tea is served in the Glendevon, a room of velvet sofas looking across the grounds to the Ochil Hills, from Friday to Monday between 12.30pm and 3.30pm, on a menu that tells the story of the railway behind the hotel, which opened in 1924. The 2026 menu prices it at £80 a person, £98 with a glass of Moët & Chandon Brut and £106 with the Grand Vintage; tables are booked on 01764 662231 or through the tea page, and you need not be staying.

A tea laid out like a railway journey

The tea page, its 2026 menu and the hotel’s own account of the tea’s launch, read on 18 October 2026, with what The Scotsman and guests found at the table.

Gleneagles was one of the country’s first railway hotels, built with its own station, the hotel’s blog recalls, and in May 2025 it gave the Glendevon a new afternoon tea drawn from that story. The 2026 menu opens with it: in 1910 the rolling landscapes of Strathearn caught the imagination of Donald Matheson, general manager of the Caledonian Railway, who dreamed of a country palace where the great and the good could escape the pace of city life; with the railway at its heart, the hotel opened its doors in 1924. Each course then carries a short tale from the line, from the fish trains that carried the catch of Scotland’s harbours to London, where King George was reported to love Scottish salmon with tartar sauce, to the loaves packed in crates for the dining cars that gave the finger sandwich its place.

The menu starts with a classic gougère with Rainton Tomme crèmeux. 2 savouries follow, a garden leek royale tartlet with black onion seed and Scottish lobster on a toasted crumpet with tarragon and a lemon gel, then the sandwiches: a Borders sirloin beef roll with horseradish remoulade, Gleneagles smoked salmon on a mini bagel with citrus cream cheese, and cucumber and dill with crème fraîche. The 4 cakes are a pistachio and lemon gâteau with puffed rice, a chocolate and orange choux flavoured with lapsang souchong and marmalade, a Perthshire raspberry and crowdie custard tart with Scottish heather honey, and the hotel’s Dundee cake with whisky-soaked sultanas. Buttermilk scones, plain and golden raisin, come with a homemade strawberry preserve and clotted cream. The tea page offers vegetarian and vegan menus on request.

The tea list reads like a map. The Gleneagles Signature Breakfast is grown on the Satemwa Estate in Malawi’s Shire Highlands; the Rare Earl Grey joins Malawian leaf to bergamot oil from Calabria; there are Genmaicha from Shizuoka, a second-flush Muscatel from Sikkim, an unroasted oolong from Waikato in New Zealand, Honeybush from South Africa and a Portuguese cinnamon basil. 3 cost £10 more: a hand-crafted Korean yellow tea, Pipacha oolong from Fujian matured in port barrels in Porto, and Saicho’s sparkling hojicha without alcohol, in a 125ml serving. Champagne comes from Moët & Chandon alone, by the glass from £18, and a champagne cocktail at £22 takes an infusion of cinnamon basil, strawberry and rhubarb, or orange and honey.

The menu has changed since its launch. The food and drink editor of The Scotsman, writing in August 2025, began with Oscietra caviar on a crisp potato waffle and a cup of beef tea, had a strawberry sorbet topped with champagne between courses, found a Perthshire duck egg custard tart served in an egg cup among the cakes, and left with a tin of old-fashioned boiled sweets. She gave the price then as from £75, with champagne from £92: the 2026 menu asks £5 and £6 more. The 2026 menu’s last story, «a sweet farewell», is about a sweet treat pocketed for the road home; it does not say whether a gift comes with the tea.

Guests on Google come for birthdays and gifts: of the 70 reviews since June 2019 that mention the tea, 6 mark a birthday and 4 a voucher or a present. Of the 7 reviews written since June 2025 that mention the tea, 6 give 4 or 5 stars; in March 2026 a guest meeting good friends called it the best they had ever had, for its detail and its variety. A guest writing in August 2025 found that the vegetarian menu included gelatine in some items, and that the kitchen would substitute anything from the vegan one. The single 1-star review, of September 2025, came from an American family ending a wedding weekend: they found the food on a par with other luxury hotels’ teas and liked being free to switch teas, but called the service atrocious: one server, they wrote, slammed the clotted cream and jam onto the table. A guest writing in March 2025, treated for Mother’s Day, found the heating broken and the room cold; staff offered blankets.

The Tripadvisor review that sits high in a search for the tea, praising haggis bonbons and a Glendevon blend, was written in February 2019, 6 years before the railway tea was launched in May 2025: its savouries belong to an earlier menu.

The hotel, rooms and guest reviews

Gleneagles, its Edinburgh Townhouse, The Balmoral or Cromlix

Hours and prices from each hotel’s own pages, read on 18 October 2026.

Gleneagles Townhouse, the hotel’s namesake in Edinburgh, shares the name and serves a tea of its own in The Spence: £65 a person, Monday to Friday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, with 48 hours’ notice, and none from 10 November to 1 January. Anyone planning tea in the city is looking for that one.

Palm Court at The Balmoral, on Princes Street, serves tea every day from noon to 5pm under a glass dome: £75 on the autumn 2026 menu, £92.50 with Charles Heidsieck, a list of 88 teas on request, and an optional 12.5% added to the bill.

Cromlix, in Dunblane, serves its tea in The Glasshouse from noon to 4pm: £52.50 on the October 2026 menu and £69.50 with a glass of Ruinart, the same 2 prices as its gift vouchers, with a savoury stand of Scottish charcuterie, cheese and hot-smoked salmon for anyone who would swap the cakes.

Gleneagles afternoon tea: your questions

How much is afternoon tea at Gleneagles?

£80 a person on the 2026 menu, £98 with a glass of Moët & Chandon Brut, £101 with the rosé and £106 with the Grand Vintage. If the discretionary 12.5% the hotel’s FAQ adds to dining bills applies to tea, £80 comes to £90; the pages read do not say whether tea is one of its exclusions.

When is afternoon tea served at Gleneagles?

From Friday to Monday, 12.30pm to 3.30pm, according to the tea page. From Tuesday to Thursday the nearest thing is the Garden Cafe, with its counter of cakes from the hotel’s pastry kitchen.

What is the dress code for afternoon tea at Gleneagles?

Smart casual, according to the day spa page; the tea page itself sets no code. The hotel’s FAQ mentions denim twice, a wish for no jeans on the golf courses and ripped denim judged inappropriate in The American Bar; the pages read do not say whether jeans pass as smart casual in the Glendevon.

Is there a vegetarian or vegan afternoon tea?

Yes, both, on request; ask when you book. The vegan menu is the one to choose for a strict diet: a guest writing in August 2025 found gelatine in parts of the vegetarian one.

Can I take home what I do not finish?

Guests say yes: 4 reviewers, writing in October and November 2023, April 2025 and August 2025, describe what they could not finish being boxed to take away, and the last also went home with a tin of Gleneagles sweets.

Can I bring my dog to afternoon tea?

No: the FAQ keeps dogs out of the restaurant and bar areas. The Garden Cafe is the place for a dog, with room in the atrium.

Can I combine afternoon tea with the spa?

Yes, from Friday to Monday: the Gleneagles Day Spa & Afternoon Tea costs £300 a person plus 12.5%, with a 50-minute Be in the Moment massage or Bespoke Beauty Ceremony facial, the Swim and Gym areas, then tea in the Glendevon. A resident booking the massage at £195 and the tea at £80 separately pays £275, £25 less; the package suits a day visitor, since the FAQ keeps the Swim and Gym areas for residents and members.

Can I buy afternoon tea as a gift?

Yes. The hotel’s voucher shop sells it at £80 a person and £98 with a glass of Moët & Chandon, for 1 to 6 people, valid for 12 months; it cannot be used over the festive season or on Easter Sunday, and a booking cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice voids it.

Is Gleneagles afternoon tea the same as the tea at Gleneagles Townhouse?

No. Gleneagles is the country hotel at Auchterarder, in Perthshire; Gleneagles Townhouse, in Edinburgh, serves its own tea in The Spence on weekdays for £65.
