Tea fit for the Crown
Cliveden and the Crown, Monday to Saturday noon to 2.30pm: £68, £88 with Champagne, plus the National Trust fee.
Cliveden House, above the Thames at Taplow in Berkshire, 40 minutes from London, is a house of 1666 rebuilt by Charles Barry, where the Astors threw their parties and the Profumo affair began. Around it lie 376 acres of National Trust gardens.

I would ask for a Mansion House Deluxe Double: 43 m² on the first or second floor of the main house, with a fireplace and views of the Grand Drive and Fountain of Love.
On 13 October 2026, Google’s lowest sellers showed 22–25 February 2027 at £355–£371 a night, each night searched alone for 2 adults. The highest shown night was 10 May 2027 at £3,502.
A discretionary 12.5% service charge is added to spa bills, and treatments and spa experiences have a 48-hour cancellation policy: factor both into a stay built around the spa.
The room is yours from 3pm until 11am, but the hotel welcomes earlier arrivals and lets you stay afterwards for the gardens, restaurants, bar and spa; leave time around the room booking.
The Duke of Buckingham built it in 1666 as a hunting lodge; it burned in 1795 and 1849, and Queen Victoria, the hotel says, saw the smoke from Windsor and sent the fire engines. Today’s house is by Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, finished in 1851. From 1893 it belonged to the Astors, and in the summer of 1961, around the pool, the Profumo affair began.
Today the house belongs to the National Trust and is run by Iconic Luxury Hotels. Dinner is in the Cliveden Dining Room, the old drawing room over the Parterre (7 courses for £165), or at the Astor Grill in the old stables, where dogs come too. For residents the 2 pools, the hot tubs, the steam room and the gym are included.
Guests give it 4.6 out of 5 on Tripadvisor from 2,565 reviews, 9.0 on Booking.com, and 2 MICHELIN Keys. On Google it is 4.6 from 4,084 reviews, but the listing mixes hotel guests with National Trust visitors who came for the gardens.
For this page we read, on 4 October 2026, 36 official pages and their PDF menus, the Google Hotels card with a year of prices, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, the MICHELIN Guide and the National Trust’s page, and the 2,000 most recent Google reviews. Tea comes up in 121 of them: on busy days, guests report, the table is yours for 2 hours.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 17 May 2024 to 3 October 2026. The «Cliveden House» Google listing gathers hotel guests and National Trust visitors to the estate together. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the countryside west of London: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 4 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

From the Google listing: a birthday every year in the same suite, tea for a grandmother’s 80th, an anniversary tea and a stay before Christmas.
A guest returns every birthday to one of the suites: the most comfortable bed of her life, the pool, the hot tub, a walk round the estate, and staff who remember her.
A day in the gardens, then tea for a grandmother’s 80th: everyone greets her and the waiter makes the afternoon special.
An anniversary tea at 2.30pm: hurried in early for a window table that turned out to be free, and service not up to the room.
A huge, spotless room, kind staff, excellent pool, spa and restaurants: the best 5-star in years, the guest writes, even if it costs.
A couple came every year before Christmas; in 2025 nobody met them on arrival, the service had slipped, and they will not return.
