Park Hyatt Kyoto: Kyoyamato, the Higashiyama ryotei

Kyoyamato is a kaiseki ryotei sharing its grounds with Park Hyatt Kyoto on the slopes of Higashiyama, with its rooms in sukiya-style buildings. The site is that of the Suikōkan, where in 1863 Sakamoto Ryōma, Katsura Kogorō and other samurai loyal to the emperor met to plan the shogunate’s fall.

A room at Kyoyamato: the dark table, the chairs and, through the open window, the pagoda above the roofs.

The choice, in short

Why choose Park Hyatt Kyoto

Seating is at Western tables and chairs, so nobody has to kneel on tatami through a long kaiseki.

When to look elsewhere

Anyone hoping to eat at a counter facing the chef should look elsewhere: every meal here is served in a private room.

For guests

From 1877 to today

The Sakaguchi family opened its first house, Yamatoya, in Osaka in 1877; Yūsaburō, the third head of the family, bought this land in 1948.3

Before that it held a temple, then a villa of the Washio family, who gave it to Nishi Honganji, which used it to receive honoured guests; the teahouse was built in 1918.3

The Soyotei, one of the 2 rooms used for the 1863 meetings, is now a protected building, and the restaurant reopened, renovated, in October 2019.3
