Breakfast
Breakfast is included at South Beach; in the pool it comes on a floating tray, at extra cost (meal plans).
The Soneva Jani overwater villa is the extreme case in the Maldives: 555 m² over the water for a single bedroom, a pool on the deck, a slide into the lagoon and a roof that opens to the stars. It stands in Noonu Atoll, 40 minutes by seaplane from Malé.

You want the water villa to be the point of the trip: space, a pool, a slide, the roof open to the stars, as a couple or with children.
The villaYou want to step from the villa straight onto a reef, or spend less: the lagoon is sandy and shallow, and a night for 2 cost $2,741 to $4,046 on Google, plus the seaplane and meals.
5 other villasAround the water villas there is a 150-acre island and a cinema over the water.
Soneva Jani opened in 2016 in the Medhufaru lagoon: a private archipelago of a 150-acre island and 5 islets, 4 of them left untouched, the resort writes. The house rule is “no news, no shoes”: shoes are left behind on arrival.
In the evening there is Cinema Paradiso, a screen over the lagoon (experiences).
There are more than 10 places to eat, from Director’s Cut, Japanese over the lagoon, to the Sri Lankan Crab Shack, and chocolate, ice cream and cheese are free at any hour (dining).
The villa sets the pace: breakfast in the water, the slide at high tide, the boat to the reef, the roof open at night.
Breakfast is included at South Beach; in the pool it comes on a floating tray, at extra cost (meal plans).
The slide runs from the villa into the lagoon; at low tide sand shows in front of some villas, which is why the slide is at its best with the water high.
There is no reef to swim to from the villas: the snorkelling trip goes by boat, the resort says.
The deck has loungers, a swing and nets slung over the water; the entry villa’s pool is 12.5 metres long according to Out There.
Half the villas face the sunrise and half the sunset, The Luxury Travel Expert writes: the Sunset Water Reserves are the ones turned west.
The roof above the bed slides away and you sleep under the stars (experiences); one reviewer warns that the cool air escapes, and the odd mosquito comes in.

For 2, the one-bedroom Water Reserve is plenty; the side of the sun changes the evening.

The 1 Bedroom Water Reserve measures 555 m² and the site says “Sleeps 3 Adults (2 Adults 2 Child)”: right for 2, or with 2 small children (water villas). The 2 Bedroom Sunset Water Reserve, 772 m², faces the sunset; oddly, the site gives it the same capacity as the one-bedroom villa. For a large family there is Villa 105, 4 bedrooms and 1,421 m².
