Soneva Jani suits couples and families who want the villa to be the holiday: the smallest over the water has 555 m² and its own pool; from May to early September 2027 Google showed the resort’s lowest night for 2 at $2,741, against $4,046 in late March. To snorkel from the villa’s steps, choose an island with the reef at the door: here it is a boat ride away.

  1. The villa to ask for

For two, the 1 Bedroom Water Reserve, on the sunrise or the sunset side: villas 82 to 101 on the South Jetty, which starts at South Beach, where breakfast is served. At this end of the island, 4 guests since 2021 praise their villa.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026, 124 of the 125 nights from 4 May to 5 September 2027 are at $2,741 for 2; from 5 April to 3 May no night is above $2,850. The dearest, 16 December 2026, costs $8,828.

  3. On top of the rate

The rates the resort quotes for a villa come before 29.92% in service charge and taxes and a $12 green tax per person per night. Add the shared seaplane, $1,300 per adult return in 2026, and on half or full board every drink, water included.

  4. Sunset at Crab Shack

Keep an evening for Crab Shack, the Sri Lankan restaurant on South Beach where, the resort says, long lunches drift into sunset dinners. Between 2019 and 2025, 5 guests single it out: 2 as their favourite restaurant, one as the best place for the sunset.

What Soneva Jani is

Soneva Jani opened in October 2016 in the Medhufaru lagoon of Noonu Atoll: a small private archipelago of Medhufaru Island, 150 acres, and 5 islets, 4 of them left untouched (official site). The resort does not print a villa count; its map, read on 13 October 2026, draws 27 villas over the water and 10 on the island. The official site sorts them into 10 categories, from 446 to 1,796 m² (water villas, island villas).

Every water villa has a slide into the lagoon; the main bedroom has a roof that opens (experiences). Half face the sunrise and half the sunset, The Luxury Travel Expert writes. The lagoon is shallow and sandy: at low tide sand shows in front of some villas and the slide is out of use, and the reef is reached by boat (the resort’s reply on Tripadvisor).

The bill is the part to read slowly. Breakfast is included; half board costs $250 per person per day, full board $375 and Soneva Unlimited, the all-inclusive plan, $1,250, taxes included, in 2026; drinks are never part of half or full board (meal plans). The villa rate carries 29.92% in service charge, carbon tax and GST plus a $12 green tax per person per night, and the shared seaplane costs $1,300 per adult return (your journey).

Guests come back above all for the staff and the villas: in the Google reviews butlers and chefs are named again and again. In September 2026 the Maldives government recognised the lagoon as an OECM conservation area, the first for a resort in the country (BW Hotelier); the MICHELIN Guide gave it 2 Keys in 2025 and 2026 (awards).

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Soneva Jani’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about a private lagoon of still water and long sandy beaches, reached by seaplane.

  2. Room

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Water villas so large that some guests say they never wanted to leave them, with the slide into the lagoon and the roof that opens above the bed.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests name their Barefoot Butler, the villa’s butler who answers on WhatsApp at any hour and arranges dinners and days out, and the restaurants’ chefs.

  4. Breakfast

Guests write about the fresh fruit, the freshly squeezed juices and a chef who comes to the table and cooks off the menu too; it is served at South Beach and included in every rate.

  5. Price

The villa rate includes breakfast at South Beach and group yoga; chocolate, ice cream and cheese from their own rooms are free at any hour.

The scores come from 247 Google reviews with text, left from 11 September 2015 to 2 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 4 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

  • Cheval Blanc Randheli
  • Velaa Private Island
  • Soneva Fushi
  • Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
  • JOALI Maldives

Price: for two on the night of 12 May 2027, from $2,741 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

On 12 October 2026 Google showed nights for 2 at $2,741 from 4 May to early September 2027, between $3,824 and $3,828 from 12 January to 20 March, and at $4,046 every night from 21 March to 4 April; from 21 December to 11 January it showed no price. On 4 October, 3 nights between May and August stood at $2,616; 8 days later the same 3 were at $2,741 and no night was below $2,738: I would not wait for a dip, and would book the week that suits.

  • There is no reef to swim to from the villas: they stand over a wide, sandy lagoon, and snorkelling means a boat (the resort’s reply, The Luxury Traveller).

A day at Soneva Jani

On arrival

Set your watch

The resort keeps its clocks one hour ahead of Malé, Ramadan excepted, and a phone does not follow, a guest wrote in March 2026.

At breakfast

Order off the menu

The resort says its chefs can adapt every meal; 4 guests between 2022 and 2026 write that the kitchen cooks what is not on the menu, and one found it laid at the table the next morning, at no charge.

After breakfast

The island by bicycle

Every villa has its bicycles and tricycles, and wooden signs mark the jungle paths; a buggy comes through the butler.

The afternoon

Chocolate, then the lagoon

Chocolate and ice cream have their own rooms, open around the clock at no charge, and paddleboards, canoes, catamarans and windsurfs are lent free.

Sunset

Out to the dolphins

On the dolphin cruise, 3 guests in 2025 and 2026 write of dolphins at play; 2 of them went at sunset and counted them by the dozen, right beside the boat.

After dark

A film over the lagoon

Cinema Paradiso shows classic films on a screen above the water, beside Director’s Cut, the Japanese restaurant: dinner and the film share an evening.

Questions before you go

Sources read between 4 and 13 October 2026.

How much does a night at Soneva Jani cost?

On Google Hotels, read on 12 October 2026 for 2 adults, a night cost $2,850 on 18 and 21 November 2026; $2,847 on 7 December and $8,828 on 16 December; then $3,828 on 21 January, 11 February and 3 March 2027, $4,046 on 22 March, the highest outside December; $2,741 on 12 May, 10 June, 4 July and 18 August, and $2,738 on 7 June, the lowest. From 21 December to 11 January Google showed no price, and the calendar ran to 7 September 2027. A calendar night does not name the villa.

For a named villa: on 4 October 2026, for 3 nights from 16 November 2026, Booking.com showed $2,948 a night on Google for the 1 Bedroom Beach Hideaway and $3,187 for the 1 Bedroom Water Reserve, Hotels.com $2,876 and $3,095. On Booking.com, for 7 nights from 16 September 2027 with breakfast, the Water Reserve cost $20,588 plus $4,148 in taxes and fees, about $3,534 a night all told.

Is breakfast included at Soneva Jani? Is it all-inclusive?

Breakfast at South Beach comes with every rate. In 2026, up to 11 January 2027, half board costs $250 per adult per day, full board $375 and Soneva Unlimited $1,250, taxes and service included, on top of the villa; children of 7 to 11 pay nothing for half or full board and $625 for Soneva Unlimited (meal plans).

Half and full board cover food only: drinks, including water at the table, are charged. Outside the plan’s restaurants you get a credit of $125 at lunch and $250 at dinner. From 12 January 2027 the prices rise to $265, $395 and $1,275, and children pay $135 for half board and $195 for full board.

Getting to Soneva Jani: seaplane or domestic flight?

By seaplane from Malé, 40 minutes, at $1,300 per adult return in 2026; or by a 30-minute domestic flight to Maafaru, $600 per adult return, and 10 minutes by speedboat, included when the flight is booked through Soneva (your journey).

The seaplane flies in daylight only: to arrive the same day you must land in Malé by 3.30pm. The domestic flight is the way in for late arrivals: flights reach Maafaru from 8am to 11pm.

Does Soneva Jani have a house reef? Can you snorkel from the villa?

No. The villas stand over a shallow lagoon of sand and seagrass, and a real reef means the boat (Tripadvisor). The Luxury Traveller writes that there is no house reef anywhere nearby; the odd ray, shark or turtle still crosses the lagoon.

Manta rays are best seen from May to October, the resort says; the Soleni dive centre visits more than 30 sites in Noonu Atoll.

Which villa should you book at Soneva Jani?

For 2: the 1 Bedroom Water Reserve, 555 m² over the water with a pool and a slide, or the 1 Bedroom Beach Hideaway, 480 m² on the sand, with a pool but no slide, one of only 3 beach villas (water villas, island villas). On the South Jetty the planks run lengthwise to quieten bikes and buggies, The Luxury Travel Expert writes; the resort’s map, read on 13 October 2026, draws the water villas there, numbers 81 to 107.

For families there are the 2 Bedroom Island Retreat, 446 m², the 772 m² Water Reserves and the numbered villas, from Villa 30 at 755 m² to Villa 34 at 1,796 m². The site says “Sleeps 3 Adults (2 Adults 2 Child)” even for the 2-bedroom villas: for more guests, look at the 3- and 4-bedroom villas.

Is Soneva Jani good for children? Is there a kids’ club?

Yes. The Den has a Lego room, a dressing-up room, a cinema, music, arts and crafts and a kitchen for cooking classes; under-4s have one-to-one babysitting, and cots and high chairs are requested before arrival (your journey, The Den). The lagoon is shallow and calm.

In 2026 children under 12 pay nothing for breakfast, half board or full board; from 2027 they pay for half and full board (meal plans). The babysitting rate is not published: $25 an hour according to Mr & Mrs Smith, $50 according to Lux Atolls.

What taxes are added at Soneva Jani?

29.92% on the villa rate: a 10% service charge, a 2% carbon offset tax and 17% GST; plus a $12 green tax per person per night (your journey). Meal plans and transfers are quoted with their taxes already included.

Is the spa included at Soneva Jani? Can non-residents use it?

Soneva Soul treatments are paid separately; group yoga, mat Pilates and meditation are free at set times, Lux Atolls notes, and the 2 gyms are open to guests. No day pass is published: the resort is a private archipelago, reached by seaplane or by the resort’s speedboat from Maafaru.

What is the spa like at Soneva Jani?

Soneva Soul has open-air treatment rooms, Pilates and movement studios, a yoga pavilion, tennis and padel courts and, from October 2026, private wellbeing studios in the villas (wellbeing). The menu includes the Ayurvedic Marma massage, Thai Tok Sen and 3-, 7- and 14-day programmes.

The treatment price list is not published: the last one found, from 2018, gave $185 for a 60-minute massage. Group yoga, mat Pilates and meditation are free at set times, and there are 2 gyms.

What restaurants are there at Soneva Jani?

The site lists more than 10: Saji, Indonesian; Primitive, Maldivian cooking over fire on the beach; Crab Shack, Sri Lankan; Director’s Cut, Japanese over the lagoon, with teppanyaki and the Irori grill; Asian Kitchen in the Garden; The Lagoon Club; Chill, Maldivian and Peruvian; and Tipsy’s cocktails brought by tuk tuk (dining). The Chocolate Room, the Cheese Room and the ice cream are open at any hour and free.

There is no dress code and no need for shoes: the resort’s rule is “no news, no shoes”, and your shoes are taken into a bag on arrival.

Is Soneva Jani open all year? When is the best time to go?

November to April is the dry season, with clear skies and light breezes; from May to October the monsoon brings showers and the odd storm, but it is the best season for manta rays (your journey). No source mentions a seasonal closure: Google’s calendar, read on 12 October 2026, priced every night from 13 October 2026 to 7 September 2027 except 21 December to 11 January, the festive weeks. Outside December the dearest nights ran from 21 March to 4 April, the cheapest from May to early September.

What happens at Christmas and New Year at Soneva Jani?

Both dinners are compulsory: in 2026 $1,730 per adult and $865 per child on Christmas Eve, $2,300 and $1,150 on New Year’s Eve; in December 2027 $900 and $1,900 per adult (meal plans). From 21 December to 11 January Google showed no villa prices.

Can you get married at Soneva Jani?

Soneva’s site has no wedding page for Jani. A wedding package for the resort sold by Singapore Airlines Holidays lists a photographer, a videographer, musicians, hair and make-up and a private dolphin cruise as extras; private dinners can also be laid on a sandbank reached only by boat, Resort Life Travel writes.

Soneva Jani or Soneva Fushi?

For IM Maldives, Jani is the honeymoon, overwater and quiet-luxury choice; Fushi, a jungle island of beach villas in Baa Atoll, is the one for families, divers and a full programme. The speedboat between the 2 is free if you stay at both.

What offers does Soneva Jani have?

On the site in October 2026: Romance Away, with a candlelit dinner, a 60-minute couples’ massage, a floating breakfast and a sunset cruise, for one-bedroom villas and at least 4 nights (Romance Away); Island to Island, 3 nights at Soneva Secret and 3 at Jani or Fushi; Gather Together for villas of 3 bedrooms or more (offers). The offers’ terms ask for a refundable 25% deposit when booking and the rest 30 days before arrival.

Is the Wi-Fi free? What are the check-in and check-out times?

Wi-Fi is free across the resort and can be switched off from the villa (your journey). Google’s listing gives check-in at 2pm and check-out at noon; your butler confirms the exact departure time the evening before.

Can you cycle? Do you need shoes?

Every villa has free bicycles and tricycles, with child seats and helmets on request; electric buggies come through the butler. Shoes come off on arrival and you go barefoot: the resort asks guests to leave heels at home and dress casually.

Is there a doctor at Soneva Jani?

There is a nurse 24 hours a day and a clinic with defibrillators; the atoll hospital at Manadhoo is 10 minutes away by speedboat, and serious cases fly to Malé (your journey).

What do guests say, and is it worth the price?

Scores are high everywhere: 4.6 out of 5 on Google from 418 reviews, 4.8 on Tripadvisor from 595, 9.4 on Expedia. The praise goes to the staff, the villas and the food; it is worth knowing that the seaplane is shared and that taxes, meals and transfers push the bill well above the villa rate.

Do you need a car or parking at Soneva Jani?

Soneva Jani is on Medhufaru Island, in Noonu Atoll: you reach it from Malé by seaplane in 40 minutes, or by a 30-minute domestic flight to Maafaru and 10 minutes by speedboat (your journey). A car and parking play no part in the stay.
