Golf, tennis and water toys
The Velaa Golf Academy has 9 par-3 holes designed by José María Olazábal, PGA lessons and a TrackMan simulator; on the lagoon there are flyboards, hoverboards, electric foil boards and the tandem jetovator (activities).
Velaa Private Island, in the Maldives’ Noonu Atoll: 47 villas on a 20-hectare island, with golf, a snow room and a tower for wine.
Velaa suits travellers who want a choice of restaurants without leaving their island, with the lowest seller on Google showing nights from $6,249 for 2 adults. For a short break with an evening arrival in Malé, I would choose a resort reachable after dark.
Official siteWould you go?
Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
For 2, I would ask for the Deluxe Beach Pool Villa: 313 m², a separate sitting room and a pool in a secluded garden, with direct beach access from the bedroom.
On 12 October 2026, Google showed nights from 3 to 9 December 2026 at $6,249 to $6,250 for 2 adults; the dearest nights shown were $7,350, including 13 January 2027.
Budget $772 per adult each way for the shared seaplane; the resort’s published transfer fare already includes the 10% service charge and 17% tourism GST.
Before a shared seaplane, you may wait 1 or 2 hours at the airport; allow for 1 or 2 stops at other resorts on the way to Velaa.
Velaa opened on 20 December 2013 in northern Noonu Atoll, on an island of just under 20 hectares, half a kilometre either way, ringed by beach (The Luxury Travel Expert). The name is the Maldivian word for turtle, and turtles still nest on its beaches (the resort’s marine biologist). There are 47 villas, houses and residences, 18 of them over the water (the resort’s fact sheet); the interiors were renovated in 2024, Drift Travel writes.
Sport is what other resorts lack. The Velaa Golf Academy has a 9-hole par-3 course designed by José María Olazábal and a TrackMan simulator; the spa over the water has the snow room, the only one in the Maldives, and the Cloud 9 pod; the Tavaru tower holds the country’s largest private wine cellar, with teppanyaki at the top (activities). There is also a covered tennis court, 2 padel courts, squash and a climbing wall.
The bill needs reading. The shared seaplane costs $772 per adult each way, the private one or the 9-seat Velaa plane $11,737 each way, the yacht Rania $15,444, all with service and GST (transfers). A guide paid $40 for water at every meal in 2024 (Dorsia Travel), and babysitting costs $60 an hour against about $35 at other resorts.
The reef around the island lost much of its coral in 1998 and 2016; since then the resort’s biologists have transplanted more than 11,000 pieces (Q&A). The MICHELIN Guide gave it 3 Keys in 2026 and Forbes Travel Guide 5 stars for the fifth time; Aragu is in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants (official news).
Lumina Guide 2027
Velaa is a 20-hectare island in Noonu Atoll with what you usually leave a resort to find: golf, covered tennis, a spa with snow and a tower for wine, among 47 villas.

Every hotel with this badgeWhat do Velaa’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Guests describe a small island ringed by white sand, with the beach in front of the villa and well-tended gardens, where they say they want for nothing.
Guests describe large villas finished in every detail, with a private pool and the beach in front.
Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Butlers named one by one, and staff who remember everyone’s tastes.
Breakfast, included in the rates, is at Athiri, the everyday restaurant: a buffet and an à la carte menu.
When they write about the bill, guests say the service is worth what they paid, from the butler to the kitchen and the spa.
| What | Score out of 10 | Guests who mention it | Happy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | 9.0 | 18 | 100% |
| Room | 7.6 | 7 | 86% |
| Staff and service | 8.7 | 39 | 95% |
| Breakfast | 7.6 | 1 | 100% |
| Price | – | 7 | 71% |
The scores come from 109 Google reviews with text, left from 24 February 2014 to 7 July 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 4 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:
Price: for two on the night of 3 November 2026, from $6,249 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
Choose Cheval Blanc Randheli for a 40-minute flight on the maison’s own seaplane, with its private airport salon. Kudadoo puts you in Lhaviyani Atoll, with residences above the reef and a seaplane journey of about 40 minutes.
| Hotel | A night, from |
|---|---|
| Velaa | $6,249 |
| Cheval Blanc Randheli | $4,528 |
| Kudadoo | $4,469 |
The lowest seller price on Google for a night searched on its own for 2 adults in the week of 16–22 November 2026, read on 12 October 2026; no room or meal plan is named. Booked as 7 nights from 16 November 2026, the lowest seller Google listed that day asked $3,930 a night for Velaa.
A golf academy, a spa over the water with a snow room, a tower with the cellar and teppanyaki, a club for children and scooters for the reef.

The Velaa Golf Academy has 9 par-3 holes designed by José María Olazábal, PGA lessons and a TrackMan simulator; on the lagoon there are flyboards, hoverboards, electric foil boards and the tandem jetovator (activities).

6 double treatment pavilions over the water, the snow room, the only one in the Maldives, and Cloud 9, a lounger suspended in light (activities); sauna and steam room. Treatments are from age 12, Resort Life Travel notes.

A 5-storey tower above the palms: teppanyaki at the top, the Maldives’ largest private wine cellar inside and a roof for dining alone (activities, dining).

Cuvées and vintages are poured at Cru, the bar by the sea; in the cellar you can dine and taste (dining). Aragu, over the water, is in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants (official news).

For children of 4 to 12: indoor climbing, cooking, art and sessions with the marine biologists, from coral transplanting to turtles (kids’ club). Babysitting costs $60 an hour (Dorsia Travel).

The reef edge is easiest to reach from the jetty at the south arrival pavilion (Angelfish); the PADI dive centre lends underwater scooters. More than 11,000 replanted corals cover 25% of the reef (Q&A).
Transfers have published prices, 10% service and 17% GST included: $772 per adult each way for the shared seaplane, $11,737 for a private one (transfers). The site publishes no villa rates or offers: the long-stay deals, from stay 4 pay 3 to stay 14 pay 10, are published by agents (Angelfish).
Water in the villa is free, at the table it is charged: $40 a meal in 2024 (Dorsia Travel).
Seaplanes dock at the jetty in front of Athiri and the main pool: guests in the island’s south-west corner hear them most (transfers, Dorsia Travel).
Submerged breakwaters ring the island against erosion; at low tide some show on the horizon (The Luxury Travel Expert).
From the beach the reef is a long swim over a shallow flat; it is easiest from the jetty at the south arrival pavilion or the water villas, and one guide recommends villas 24, 25 and 26 (Angelfish, Tripadvisor).
The resort closes for a few weeks a year for upkeep (Vogue Australia); in 2025 for a month in September, to rebuild the kids’ club (Drift Travel).
