LUX* South Ari Atoll suits families and friends who want a lively island with 8 restaurants and a kids’ club, from $308 a night from 11 April 2027: the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night, for 2 adults. A stay that wants silence, or a reef in front of the villa, suits another island.

The island from the air, long and narrow, beach and lagoon on both sides
  1. The pavilion to ask for

I would ask for the Family Lagoon Pavilion: 130 m² on the beach, one unit with 2 separate entrances, direct beach access and a furnished terrace facing the sand.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026, the week of 1 to 7 May 2027 runs from $283 to $310 a night. At New Year, 29 December to 4 January, it runs from $1,673 to $1,740.

  3. On top of the package

The Allegria and Umami restaurants are outside the all-inclusive package: a credit of $30 per adult per meal is deducted from the invoice, and in-villa dining is in none of the plans.

  4. Sunrise at the Lagoon Bar

The Lagoon Bar stands right by the beach, near reception and the water sports centre, with a front-row view of the sunrise. On the all-inclusive plan it serves lunch à la carte.

What LUX* South Ari Atoll is

There was a resort on Dhidhoofinolhu as far back as the 1980s: the Ministry of Tourism register dates it to 1988 (Ministry of Tourism). Once Diva Maldives, then LUX* Maldives, it reopened as LUX* South Ari Atoll on 1 September 2016 after a 3-month renovation of every villa (The Lux Collective); the water villas were refurbished again in 2025 (Luxury Travel Advisor). Its 193 villas come in 11 categories, along more than 3 km of beach and over the lagoon (official site).

There are 8 places to eat, including MIXE, the buffet with sand under the tables; EAST Market, Asian, with its bar on stilts; Senses at the edge of the infinity pool; Beach Rouge with pizza from the wood oven; Italian Allegria and Japanese Umami (restaurants). The coffee is roasted on the island, at Café LUX* (Café LUX*). The LUX* ME Spa has its treatment pavilions over the lagoon and is one of 3 spas in the Maldives with 4 Forbes stars (official site).

The reason to choose South Ari is the whale sharks: the marine protected area that begins beside the resort is, in the resort’s words, the only place in the world where they gather all year round (official site). The trip with the marine biologist lasts 3 hours and costs $155 per adult (experiences); the PADI dive centre reaches more than 50 sites (FAQ). Turtles and manta rays swim in the lagoon, but there is no reef within swimming distance of the beach: the resort runs free boat trips to its house reef, tide and weather permitting (all-inclusive sheet).

Guests praise the staff and the food above all: 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 1,097 reviews, 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 7,944 and 9.4 on Booking.com from 152, read on 5 October 2026. On bed and breakfast the extras add to the rate, the seaplane can mean a wait at the terminal, the DJ is heard from the water villas until midnight (Tripadvisor) and there is seagrass in the lagoon, which the resort keeps back only in the swimming areas (FAQ).

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

25 minutes by seaplane from Malé, LUX* South Ari Atoll is an island almost 2 km long beside the marine area where whale sharks are found all year, with 193 villas, 8 restaurants and a kids’ club.

How we choose the hotels

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

South Ari, trips to look for whale sharks; 25 minutes by seaplane, but with the wait at the terminal.

  2. Character

A big, lively island with a thousand thoughtful touches; anyone after a secluded hideaway will be happier on a smaller island.

  3. Rooms

11 categories, from 60 to 360 m²; water villas refurbished in 2025, pools in only some.

  4. Food and social life

8 restaurants and 5 bars, coffee roasted on the island; Allegria and Umami excluded from standard all-inclusive, one dinner in each with Premium.

  5. Wellness

The LUX* ME Spa over the water, 4 Forbes stars; yoga, sauna and steam room.

  6. The stay as a whole

From $554 a night in November and $308 from April; on bed and breakfast the extras add up.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do LUX* South Ari Atoll’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Spacious, well-kept villas: guests write of the water villas, bright, with their glass walls and the net hung over the lagoon, and of the beach villas, a few steps from the sea.

  3. Staff and service

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 13 June 2019 to 30 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

What a night costs, season by season

Single nights for 2 adults run from $330 to $818 until 22 December 2026, from $1,438 to $1,740 between 23 December and 5 January 2027, from $308 to $1,339 between 6 January and 10 April, and from $283 to $310 from 11 April to 7 September. I would look at 1 to 7 May 2027, when 7 nights run from $283 to $310, and keep clear of 29 December to 4 January, at $1,673 to $1,740. Between 5 and 12 October, 22 of the 323 nights on both calendars rose by 5% or more, and 1 fell by 5% or more.
