In the Maldives I’d go between May and July, wet monsoon and all: a 4-star costs about $332 a night for 2, against $548 in January. A 5-star goes from $647 in June to $948 in January; transfers and meals usually cost extra.

Where I’d sleep in the Maldives: 4 hotels from the guide

At Soneva Jani I’d choose the villa first and the dates after. Its prices include breakfast only: half board and the seaplane come on top.

At Velaa you dine at Aragu one evening and Tavaru the next, without leaving the island. Land in Malé after 3.30pm and you’ll need a night in the city before the seaplane.

Cheval Blanc is for unhurried days between the villa and the table. If you want to snorkel every time you step out, ask first where you get into the water.

At Ithaafushi give one evening to Terra: 7 bamboo nests in the treetops, one table each, and a 7-course menu that wants the whole night.

Usually the seaplane or speedboat from Malé and most meals, which can add more than the room: ask what they cost. Ask too whether taxes, service and the green tax are all in.
