Like a regular

The white beach among the palms, with a swing set in the lagoon and the water villas in the distance.
  1. The villa to ask for

I would ask for an over-water villa on the sunset side, with a heated hot tub or a private pool; a guest who wrote in December 2023 found the pool version, with its sunset view, wonderful.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026 the cheapest week is 9–15 November 2026, at $592 on each of 7 nights. The dearest night is 31 December 2026 at $2,606, and 11–17 April 2027 runs from $2,115 to $2,442.

  3. On top of the rate

The seaplane is booked on top: Booking.com lists $643.50 per adult return from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, tax included. A gala dinner is compulsory on 24 and 31 December; spa and menu prices add 10% service charge and 17% GST.

  4. A day on Lonubo

Book “Your Lonubo”: the boat takes you to the uninhabited island at 10.45am and collects you at 3pm, for 4 hours of sun and sand, from $250 per couple plus service and tax, boat included.

What Maafushivaru is

Maafushivaru is an island of a little over 350 metres in South Ari Atoll, 96 km from Malé, run by the Outrigger group as a 5-star resort. Its villas come in 8 types, half on the beach and half over the water, from 95 to 184 m²; the website does not say how many there are, and Tripadvisor and Expedia both give 81. A few minutes away by boat is Lonubo, an uninhabited island the resort keeps for its guests’ picnics, dinners and ceremonies.

The reason to choose it is the people. Of the 200 Google reviews with text written since the resort reopened after its renovation at the end of 2020, 95% of those discussing the staff are positive: guests greeted by name, a personal host on WhatsApp, the villa made up twice a day. The Dine Around All Inclusive plan takes you to dinner in any restaurant and covers lunch at Edgewater, the coffee and ice creams of Kofee ’n Chill and the minibar.

The rest has to be budgeted for. The seaplane flies by day only and is charged separately; the gala dinners on 24 and 31 December are compulsory; the reef teems with fish, sharks and rays, and in 2023 and 2025 guests describe coral that is largely bleached, with a few stretches still beautiful. And the island is small: anyone after nightlife or long walks soon runs out of it.

What do Maafushivaru’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the reef round the island, South Ari’s whale sharks seen on an excursion, Lonubo, the uninhabited island, and a small, well-kept, quiet island.

  2. Room

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests describe the space, the private pool, the sea seen from the bed and villas made up twice a day.

The scores come from 200 Google reviews with text, left from 16 October 2020 to 24 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in South Ari Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

Questions before you go

What people ask before booking Maafushivaru, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Maafushivaru?

A 5-star resort, as its official page describes it, run by the Outrigger group on a private island in South Ari Atoll. The website does not say how many villas there are: Tripadvisor and Expedia count 81, in 8 types.

The site gives neither an opening date nor a renovation date. Google reviews describe a resort entirely renovated in November and December 2020, still called LTI Maafushivaru in February 2021 and carrying the Outrigger name since June 2022. It has won Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best every year from 2023 to 2026, according to its awards page and Tripadvisor.

Which villas can you choose, and how big are they?

8 types, according to the villas page, with sizes confirmed by Booking.com. On the beach: the Beach Villa of 99 m², the pool version of 120 m², the 116 m² family villa with 2 bedrooms and the 184 m² 2-storey villa with 2 bedrooms and a pool. Over the water: the Over Water Villa of 95 m², the pool version of 151 m² and 2 villas on the sunset side, one with a hot tub of 95 m² and one with a pool.

For the last, the official page gives 1,023 sq ft, about 95 m², and Booking.com 151 m². The site labels every size in «ft»: for 5 villas the number matches Booking.com’s square metres, while for the other 3 it is true square feet, 1,249 for the family villa, which adds its 116 m², and 1,981 for the 2-storey one. On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.8/5 from 349 ratings and Trip.com 4.8/5 from 47; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.9/5 from 1,217, first on the island and Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best 2026, Booking.com 9.6/10 from 55, with the staff at 9.9 and value for money at 8.8, and Expedia 9.6/10 from 87.

In the 200 Google reviews with text written since October 2020, 95% of those discussing the staff are positive, and 95% of those discussing the villas; on price, 15 guests out of 19 are happy. Guests greeted by name, the personal host on WhatsApp, villas made up twice a day and an all-inclusive that opens every restaurant keep coming back. The island is small and quiet in the evening, children of every age are welcome, and on the house reef guests in 2023 and 2025 describe coral that is largely bleached.

Which taxes and supplements are added?

Villa rates exclude the 10% service charge and the 17% tourism goods and services tax, according to the official FAQs; the same are added to the spa, excursions and ceremonies. Booking.com adds a $12 green tax per person per night. Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives already include taxes and fees.

The seaplane, the gala dinners of 24 and 31 December and, depending on the meal plan, drinks, lunches and dinners in the à la carte restaurants are paid separately. On Booking.com the rates put the seaplane transfer in the total; on the official site it is paid separately. Extras are signed to the villa and settled on departure.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in at 2pm and check-out at noon, according to the official FAQs. The real times depend on the seaplane, whose schedule the airline sends the evening before; the meal plan lasts until noon on departure day, and DISCOVERY members on the higher tiers may get more flexible times.
