Vilamendhoo suits couples and families who want to snorkel off the beach every day, in 2 separate halves, with full board already in the rate: a night for 2 adults starts at $373 in May 2027, the lowest price any seller showed on Google. Anyone after a small, hushed resort will be happier elsewhere.

Like a regular

A couple holding hands on the white beach, between the turquoise water and the palms.
  1. The villa over the lagoon

For 2 adults I would ask for a Romantic Ocean Villa: 85 m² above the lagoon, the island’s largest villa, with a bathtub and a private staircase leading straight into the water. It is for guests aged 18 and over.

  2. The weeks that cost less

Consider 29 May to 4 June 2027: 7 nights at $373, for 2 adults, on Google read 12 October 2026. The dearest week, 2 to 8 January 2027, ran from $552 to $939 a night.

  3. On top of the rate

Booking.com lists the seaplane at $400 per person aged 12 and over and $200 per child, return, paid at the resort, and a compulsory gala dinner on 24 and 31 December, charged separately. The resort’s own offers page says direct quotes include the transfer.

  4. The deck of the Bonthi Bar

Open 24 hours, the deck of the Bonthi Bar is built over the water, and the resort’s page invites guests to watch the marine life beneath it.

What Vilamendhoo is

Vilamendhoo has a South Ari island to itself, 900 metres long and 250 wide, 25 minutes by seaplane from Malé. It opened in 2011, is run by the Maldivian group Crown & Champa Resorts and has 184 villas in 5 categories: 3 open to families, in the garden or on the beach, and 2 kept for adults aged 18 and over, 30 on the sand and 30 over the water.

The sea is the reason to come. The reef circles the island and drops into the blue a few metres off the shore, with blacktip reef sharks, turtles and eagle rays, and the atoll's whale sharks can be found in every month of the year. Of the 500 most recent Google reviews with text, written between June 2019 and June 2026, 94% of those that mention the location are positive.

The rest needs budgeting for. The rate covers buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner, but drinks, excursions and snorkelling gear are paid for unless you add the all-inclusive package. And from 1 May to 14 November 2026 the resort is closed for renovation, so every photograph and review shows the island as it was.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

At Vilamendhoo the reef rings a 900-metre island and is a short swim from the beach, with 184 villas split into 2 halves kept apart: one for families, one for adults only.

  2. Room

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 29 June 2019 to 17 June 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Ari Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Ari Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 16 May 2027, from $373 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

Read on 12 October 2026, a night for 2 adults ran at $373 to $479 from 6 May to 6 September 2027, against $454 to $976 from 9 January to 5 May. I would choose 6 May to 6 September 2027 over 9 January to 5 May 2027.

Mantas and whale sharks

South Ari is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks gather all year, and the resort runs boat trips to find them, as well as mantas and turtles. There is also the outing to the inhabited island of Dhangethi, fishing and a sunset cruise.

The reef edge at 15 metres

In April 2025 a couple who came for the snorkelling describe a striking drop-off 15 metres from the beach, around almost the whole island: blacktip sharks, rays, moray eels and a single turtle in 3 days. On the seaplane out of Malé they suggest sitting on the left.

Steps into the sea

A couple who stayed in a water villa in February 2026 found it spotless, cleaned several times a day, the minibar always full and the deck with its short ladder into the sea; the way onto the reef was a few strokes away. They could move in at 9.30am.

An island in 2 halves

In January 2026 a family on their fourth Maldives trip rank the reef among the country's best but disliked the split: the children's pool among the trees, the adults' infinity pool facing the sunset, and on the last evening their daughter was asked to leave the adults' beach. They also object to constant upselling.

Without the all-inclusive

The dive school

In August 2025 one guest writes that it is no luxury resort and likens it to a club past its prime; they dislike the buffet and the à la carte restaurants but rate the dive school, the reef and the dive sites within an hour by boat. Their advice is to stay only if diving is the priority.

Questions before you go

The questions people ask before booking Vilamendhoo, answered from sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Vilamendhoo?

A resort on an island of its own in South Ari Atoll, 900 metres long and 250 wide, with 184 villas. Google Hotels rates it 4 stars and the official site calls itself 4 and a half. It opened in 2011 and is run by the Maldivian group Crown & Champa Resorts; its name is now Vilamendhoo Maldives Resort Island, though many still know it as Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa.

From 1 May to 14 November 2026 it is closed for a renovation of the rooms, public areas and facilities, reopening on 15 November, according to the reopening page. Expedia gives it 194 rooms; the official site and Tripadvisor give 184.

Which villas can you choose, and how big are they?

5 categories, 184 villas in all, according to the villas page: 13 Tropical Villas in the garden, 58 Adjacent Beachfront Villas paired under one roof and 53 standalone Beachfront Villas, all of 55 m², then 30 Romantic Beachfront Villas of 65 m² and 30 Romantic Ocean Villas of 85 m² over the water, the last 2 for adults aged 18 and over.

Every villa has a king bed, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a porch, a stocked minibar, free Wi-Fi and a part-open-air bathroom with 2 basins and a rain shower; the 2 adults-only categories add a bathtub and a Nespresso machine. The site's menu and Google Hotels still speak of Jacuzzis while the refreshed villa pages list a bathtub, and almost all the official villa photographs predate the works.

Where is it, and is the island quiet?

In South Ari Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu, 88 km from Velana airport in Malé, according to the official FAQ. The resort is the only thing on the island, and its white beach runs for 1.5 km along the shore.

It is quiet for an island of 184 villas: families and adults keep to separate halves, and the music, karaoke or DJ gather at Bonthi Bar in the evening. Between 2024 and 2025, 3 guests write of the breeze on the north side; the jetty is on the south side.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?

Only by seaplane, with Trans Maldivian Airways: after check-in at the TMA desk a bus takes about 10 minutes to the seaplane terminal, departure is usually within 1 to 2 hours of clearing customs and the flight lasts 25 minutes, according to the official arrivals page. Seaplanes fly only by day, so anyone landing in Malé too late for the last one, at about 4pm, spends the night in the city.

Booking.com gives the return fare as $400 per person aged 12 and over and $200 per child aged 2 to 11, payable at the resort; the families page halves the fare under 12 and charges nothing up to the age of 2. The official site publishes no price, but its offers page says direct quotes include the transfer.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No. Vilamendhoo is an island without roads, reached only by seaplane, and no official or booking-site source describes any parking. You get about on foot, often barefoot.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach, or down the private staircase of the water villas. The official site says the reef can be reached from almost any point on the shore, and Expedia counts 10 marked entry points; a guest in March 2025 describes lifebuoys and signed entry and exit points along the reef.

The official villa pages assign sunloungers to every villa, the garden ones included.

Is there a house reef you can swim to?

Yes, and it is the reason to come: the official overview puts it a short swim from the shore on both sides of the island, and a guest in 2025 puts the edge of the drop-off 15 metres from the beach. The house reef page lets certified divers go in from the shore at any hour, night included, after an orientation with Euro-Divers.

After dark you may snorkel only with a guide; masks, fins and underwater cameras are rented at the dive centre. One guest in August 2025 preferred the water villa side, another in September warned that the current can be strong.

What are the pools like?

2 freshwater pools, according to the official fact sheet: Boashi, among the gardens, for families, with a shallow children's pool beside it, and Sunset, an infinity pool on the beach for adults aged 18 and over, next to the Sunset Bar. The island page counts 3 by including the children's pool, and Booking.com lists 3.

None of the 5 villa categories has a private pool, according to the official pages.

Are the pools heated, and when are they open?

No source read mentions heating or publishes pool hours. The official FAQ gives the sea an average of 29°C and the air 30°C almost all year; until 14 November 2026 the pools are closed along with the resort.

Where do you eat, and until what time?

Included meals are served at the buffets, according to the buffet restaurants page: Funama for guests in the villas open to families, with a deck over the water, and Ahima for adults only. Both serve breakfast from 7.30 to 10am, lunch from 12.30 to 2pm and dinner from 7 to 9pm, with live cooking stations.

For à la carte, on the restaurants page: Asian Wok, over the water at the island's eastern end, for Asian food and teppanyaki, lunch from 12.30 to 2pm and dinner from 6.30 to 10pm; and Faru, the seafood restaurant, dinner from 7 to 9.30pm. There is also Boashi Café, private dinner on the beach and room service. The general dining page, and Booking.com, still call the second à la carte restaurant Hot Rock.

There are 4 bars, says the bars page: Bonthi on its overwater deck, open 24 hours, Boashi from 10am to 8pm, the adults-only Sunset Bar from 10am to midnight and Asian Wok Bar from 10am to 10pm. Adults in a family-side villa can switch to Ahima for $15 per couple per day, space permitting.

What meal plans are there, and what do they include?

Official rates include full board at the buffet, breakfast, lunch and dinner at Funama or Ahima depending on the villa, as the villa pages state. The all-inclusive package for winter 2026-2027 and summer 2027 is added for the whole room and the whole stay: unlimited house drinks, from draught beer to wine and cocktails made with house spirits, snacks from 11am to 12.30pm and 2.30 to 7pm, the minibar restocked once a day and a bottle of bubbly.

It also covers one 3-course set lunch or dinner at Asian Wok or Faru, booked ahead, 20% off other dishes at those 2 restaurants, a sunset cruise, the Dhangethi island trip, a half-hour group snorkelling lesson and another of windsurfing, an hour a day of kayaking, tennis and padel, and yoga. Room service, branded wines and spirits, fresh juice and other excursions stay outside it.

Booking.com describes the resort as all-inclusive; for the official site the package is optional, and the same page gives it 2 different names.

What is the spa like?

Duniye Spa stands over the water, for women and men, and pairs a therapist's touch with Asian techniques and organic products, Healing Earth and PURE, according to the official fact sheet and the spa page; its therapists draw on the healing traditions of Asia and Africa. The official photographs show double treatment rooms with glass doors open to the sea.

The site gives neither its size nor its number of rooms, and no official source mentions a sauna, steam room or spa pool. Treatments include reiki, reflexology and sessions with Tibetan singing bowls; group yoga is free on the all-inclusive.

Is the spa included, is there a charge, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are paid for; on the all-inclusive, according to the official package, some are 20% off if taken in the first 2 days. The site publishes no spa access included in the rate and no day pass for anyone not staying on the island, which holds only the resort.

What are the spa's opening hours?

The site does not publish them, and until 14 November 2026 the spa is closed with the rest of the resort. It does publish the gym's, 6am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 8pm, and the sports courts close at 8pm; activities can be booked before arrival on the resort's app.

Which treatments does it offer, and at what prices?

The treatments page lists 3 signature rituals: Ocean Dreaming, a massage with warm ginger and lemongrass poultices, 75 minutes for $126; Heaven on Earth, face and body to the sound of Tibetan singing bowls, 90 minutes for $149; and the Maldivian Serenity Ritual, a scrub, massage and hair treatment with organic coconut, 120 minutes for $194.

For couples there are Full Moon Magic, Honeymoon Indulgence and Him & Her, a Balinese massage for 2 followed by a bottle of sparkling wine. The page does not say whether prices include service and GST, and the full menu the site links to was no longer online on 7 October 2026.

Is it good for children?

Yes, on the family side: children sleep in the garden and beach villas, up to 2 adults and 2 children, eat at Funama and have the Boashi pool with its shallow end, the playground and the games room. The Heron Kids Club, next to the pool, has an outdoor area and an air-conditioned one, and the official page describes it as supervised without giving ages or hours.

Under 12, meals and the seaplane are half price and up to the age of 2 nothing is charged, according to the families page, which offers paid babysitting with 24 hours’ notice and, lower down, says the service is unavailable. Booking.com gives cots free and an extra bed for a child at $263 a night; Expedia charges $12 a day for a cot.

What is there on the island besides the villas?

According to the official fact sheet: 4 restaurants, Boashi Café and 4 bars, 2 pools, the spa, the gym, floodlit tennis and padel courts, a putting green, volleyball, badminton, pétanque and football, the Euro-Divers PADI 5 Star dive centre and its water sports centre, with catamarans, kayaks, windsurfing, paddleboards, waterskiing and jet skis.

Then the games room, the library, the shop, a business corner with free computers and internet, the Vila Memories photo studio, a clinic with a resident doctor on call day and night for emergencies, and the Fehurihi lounge for seaplane passengers. Pets are not allowed, say Booking.com and Expedia, and drones are banned.

Are there any offers?

The offers page, read on 7 October 2026, had 2, both with flexible cancellation: 20% off stays from 15 November to 26 December 2026, from $341, booked by 30 November, and 30% off stays from 1 May to 31 October 2027, from $270. Booking direct needs no deposit, and the site promises quotes with taxes, service and the seaplane included.

On 3 October the home page still showed 25% off for bookings by 30 September and a kids-stay-free offer, which had gone by 7 October. Honeymooners and silver or golden anniversaries get fruit, a decorated bed and a bottle of sparkling wine.

Can you get married at Vilamendhoo?

Only in a symbolic ceremony with no legal standing: a wedding or a renewal of vows, in a rite of the couple's choosing or the Maldivian one led by the island's headman, on the beach, according to the romantic options page; the official fact sheet mentions a wedding pavilion.

There are 3 packages: Basic, a small ceremony on the beach; Classic, with cake, sparkling wine and a candlelit dinner on the sand; and Premium, with Champagne, bridal hair and make-up, a private barbecue with your own chef and breakfast the next morning. The site publishes neither prices nor guest numbers; the island's own studio takes the photographs.

Is there a New Year's Eve dinner?

Yes, and it is compulsory: Booking.com warns that guests staying on the night of 24 and 31 December pay separately for the gala dinners, without giving a price. The 2026 programme is not out yet; for December 2025 the events page put the Christmas Eve and New Year gala dinners in the 2 buffet restaurants, with a glow party at Bonthi Bar on the 31st.

On Google Hotels on 6 October 2026 the nights from 24 to 31 December had no price, which does not mean the resort is closed.

Can you play golf?

There is only a putting green, with putters and balls free of charge, according to the sports centre price list; no source mentions a golf course or golf packages.

When is it open, and what is the best season?

From 1 May to 14 November 2026 it is closed for works, reopening on 15 November 2026; stays can already be booked up to 31 October 2027, according to the reopening page. The Google Hotels calendar had no prices for any night up to 14 November.

The site names no best season: the official FAQ says light rain can fall from May to November, rarely lasting more than an hour or 2, and the diving page promises mantas and whale sharks all year. One guest in August 2025 had bad weather, a couple in October and November 2025 a single night of rain.

How much does a night cost?

Google Hotels, read on 12 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $420 on 15 November 2026, the night it reopens, $636 on 25 November, $466 on 7 December, $818 on 22 December, $789 on 1 January 2027, $508 on 14 January and $671 on 29 January 2027.

Of the 117 nights read, from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, 69 had a price, from $466 to $671; the missing ones were every night up to 14 November, with the resort closed for works, 21 November and the nights from 24 to 31 December. The calendar shows the night's lowest price and names neither the villa nor the meal plan; official rates include full board, and the seaplane, on Booking.com, is extra.

What do the reviews say?

On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.8/5 from 1,376 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.8/5 from 8,309, with a 2026 Travellers' Choice award, Booking.com 9.3/10 from 335, with location at 9.6, cleanliness at 9.6, value at 8.6 and Wi-Fi at 7.9, and Expedia 9.2/10 from 744.

Of the 500 most recent Google reviews with text, 94% of those that mention the location are positive, as are 91% of those on the villas and 87% of those on the staff and services. The reef, the cleanliness and waiters who remember each guest’s habits come up again and again. Some guests find the price fair for the Maldives, especially on all-inclusive; others count extras, from drinks to excursions, charged on top of full board. Every one of them was written before the works.

What taxes and charges are added to the rate?

The official villa pages say rates include 17% GST, a 10% service charge and the Green Tax of $12 per person per night; Booking.com, by contrast, lists the Green Tax separately, along with the seaplane. The sports price list includes service and GST, and an hour on the tennis court costs $10.

Without the all-inclusive you pay for drinks, snacks, excursions, diving and equipment hire; the spa, room service and the 24 and 31 December gala dinners are extra for everyone. A guest in September 2025 paid $8.20 for a beer and from $12.50 for cocktails, and seaplane luggage over 20 kg costs $5 a kilo plus GST.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to the official FAQ, and the resort offers online registration before you travel. Expedia gives check-in until 5pm and a minimum check-in age of 18; Booking.com sets no minimum age.
