Angaga suits snorkellers who want the reef close to shore, with nights from $317 for 2 adults, the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night. For a holiday built around a choice of restaurants, I would look elsewhere.

The island from above, the row of water bungalows over the lagoon on the left and the dark reef beneath the surface.
  1. The bungalow to request

I would ask for the Premium Water Bungalow: 78 m², a glass-bottomed coffee table and a private sun deck, with direct access to the lagoon from the bungalow.

  2. The week to consider

    For 3–9 May 2027, each separate night showed $319 on 12 October 2026. The calendar’s dearest nights, 23 April, 24 April and 29 April 2027, showed $1,292.

  3. Beyond the room rate

Budget $400 per adult for the return seaplane and $12 per person per night in Green Tax; the resort’s policy adds this environmental tax to the room rate.

  4. Before signing the bill

The all-inclusive sheet asks you to return borrowed snorkelling equipment 8 hours before departure, and to check that each bill says All Inclusive before signing it.

What Angaga is

Angaga has an island of 42,372 m² to itself in South Ari Atoll, 85 km from Malé airport; guests walk the shoreline in 10 to 20 minutes. It holds 50 Superior Beach Bungalows of 45 m² on the sand, then 20 Superior Water Bungalows of 65 m² and 24 Premium Water Bungalows of 78 m² over the lagoon, the only recent ones. Google Hotels and Tripadvisor rate it 3 stars, Booking.com 4, and the website names no operator.

People come for the sea. The reef begins a few metres from the shore, with stingrays, reef sharks and turtles, and the SUB AQUA dive centre lets certified divers with a buddy dive the house reef unguided after a check dive. Angaga Thila is 7 minutes away by boat. Of the 491 Google reviews with text, 83% of those that mention the location are positive, and regulars abound: one couple in January 2026 were on their fourth visit.

Everything else is kept simple. Meals are buffets at the Dolphin, breakfast, lunch and dinner; an espresso costs $4.50 even on all-inclusive, and extras carry a 10% service charge and 17% GST. The 24 Premium water bungalows are the newest, and guests who care about a recent bed and furniture book those; the generator sits in the middle of the island, runs day and night, and can be heard from the beach bungalows. Anyone who wants the reef on the doorstep for less than the neighbouring islands charge finds it here.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

Angaga is a small barefoot island in South Ari Atoll with the house reef a few metres off the sand: people come here to be in the water, and a night costs less than on the neighbouring islands.

  4. Food and social life

3 buffet meals in one restaurant, curries and fish; espresso and water are extra.

  5. Wellness

A Thai spa over the water with massages from $80, a gym; no sauna or steam room.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Angaga’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe the reef a few metres off the beach, with its sharks, rays and turtles, and a small, quiet island you can walk right round in 10 to 20 minutes.

  2. Room

7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write most about the Premium Water Bungalows, the newest: spacious, with a large bathroom and the lagoon view. In the beach bungalows they like the terrace a few steps from the sea.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests name the waiters at the Dolphin and the bartenders at Sundown Bar, often by first name, the housekeeping that calls twice a day and the dive centre.

  4. Breakfast

6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is a buffet at the Dolphin, from 7:30 to 10:00: guests remember the eggs and omelettes cooked to order and the pastries.

  5. Price

5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. Guests content with the price call Angaga one of the cheapest islands in the Maldives.

The scores come from 491 Google reviews with text, left from 8 September 2014 to 30 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in South Ari Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in South Ari Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 5 June 2027, from $317 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

The calendar read on 12 October 2026 showed $317 nights in June and July 2027, while the October 2026 nights ran from $279 to $287. I would compare the May week with June’s shorter runs before choosing dates, and check the full stay with the seller.

What to expect

The reef on the doorstep, boat trips for whale sharks and mantas, one buffet table and a spa at the end of a jetty.

The reef all round

The official page puts it a few metres off the island, reached from the main jetty, with schools of snapper, soldierfish and batfish, and stingrays, sharks and turtles very likely. The dive centre runs a coral nursery on the reef after the bleaching of 2015–16.

Whale sharks and mantas

On Sundays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 12:30 the boat goes out for whale sharks, $62 a head; on Wednesdays for mantas, $56, plus service and tax. Each trip needs at least 8 adults: when the island is quiet, as in September 2026, a trip may not go out.

Good to know before you book

  • The 24 Premium Water Bungalows are the only ones built recently: in the other 70, between January 2024 and July 2026, 10 Google reviews describe bungalows and furniture many years old, and 3 of them hard or old mattresses; anyone who cares about a new bed and fittings books a Premium.

  • The generator sits in the middle of the island and can be heard almost everywhere except the water bungalows, say 3 Google reviews between November 2024 and January 2026; the staff canteen and service areas are there too.

  • The sea carries sand away from one side of the island and drops it on the other, and big sandbags line the shore: 7 Google reviews write of them between January 2025 and June 2026, and among the beach bungalows some are glad to have drawn one with a clear shoreline.

  • Room rates include service and GST, but the final bill adds the Green Tax of $12 per person per night and, on every extra, 10% service and 17% GST: mineral water is $3.50, an espresso $4.50, the lobster $92.40.

  • Excursions run only with at least 8 adults signed up: when the island is quiet, as in September 2026, the whale-shark and manta trips may not go out.

The south side of the reef

In January 2026 a guest in a Premium Water Bungalow wrote that the south side of the reef is the best for snorkelling, though windier and with more current. With the reef on the doorstep, they suggest skipping the snorkelling boat trip and taking the manta or whale-shark trip instead.

Mantas for 2, $145

In June 2026 a couple paid $145 between them, taxes included, for the manta trip: worth it, they wrote, though you have to swim hard to keep up. They also describe the pool open until 18:00, rooms cleaned twice a day and plankton glowing along the shore at night.

A water bungalow, sunset side

In November 2025 a couple in one of the older overwater bungalows, on the sunset side, found the reef extraordinary: blacktip and whitetip sharks, stingrays, eagle rays, turtles and an octopus. The newer bungalows, they note, are further from the restaurant but have the sunset bar.

Half board plus was enough

In August 2025 a couple upgraded from a beach bungalow to a Premium wrote that half board plus was plenty: breakfast, sandwiches and chips mid-morning and mid-afternoon, dinner, and cocktails included. They describe a resort that keeps the charm of the old Maldives.

Generator and mattresses

On 1 January 2026 a guest gave 2 stars: the generator can be heard day and night, the mattresses are hard, water at meals is charged and the manta and whale-shark trips take more than an hour by boat. The restaurant, reception and dive-centre staff come out well.

The boat trips

In September 2026 a guest who had booked all-inclusive through Priceline was told on arrival that the booking had come from Agoda and did not include all-inclusive. With the island half empty, they wrote, around half the activities had been cancelled, whale-shark and manta trips among them.

Questions before you go

What people ask before booking Angaga, answered from sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Angaga?

A mid-range resort on an island of its own in South Ari Atoll: 3 stars on Google Hotels and on Tripadvisor, which uses the Giata classification, 4 on Booking.com. The bungalows page counts 94: 50 on the beach, 20 Superior and 24 Premium over the water; Tripadvisor lists 90.

The website names neither the operator nor the opening year; a guest who returned in 2022 had first stayed 35 years earlier, in the late 1980s. The dive centre is SUB AQUA, and the site displays HolidayCheck and TUI awards from 2013 to 2018.

Which bungalows are there, and how big are they?

3 types, each for up to 3 guests, on the bungalows page: the Superior Beach Bungalow of 45 m² on the sand, the Superior Water Bungalow of 65 m² and the recently built Premium Water Bungalow of 78 m² over the water. All have a bath and separate shower, air conditioning, a kettle and free Wi-Fi; the water bungalows add a glass-bottomed table and steps into the lagoon.

The resort policy allows one extra bed at most, 90 by 190 cm. The site does not say whether the floor areas include the deck. Guests in 2025 and 2026 praise the Premiums, the only ones built recently, for their space, the large bathroom and the lagoon view.

Where is it, and is the island quiet?

In South Ari Atoll, in Alifu Dhaalu, 85 km from Malé airport and 25 minutes by seaplane, according to the official page. Google places it at Mandhoo and Booking.com at Theluveligaa, 2 other islands of the atoll, the second another resort’s; on Angaga itself there is only Angaga.

It is very quiet: no entertainment programme, and by 21:00 there is hardly anyone about, wrote a guest in June 2026. The noise that remains is the generator in the middle of the island, which several guests hear from the beach bungalows.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?

By seaplane from Velana airport, in daylight only: 25 minutes on the travel page, 25 to 30 in the resort policy, which prices the return transfer at $400 net per adult and $200 per child aged 2 to 11, free under 2. International flight details are needed 7 days ahead.

For arrivals after 15:30 the 2 pages differ: the travel page asks guests to book the resort from the following night, while the policy describes a domestic transfer, with the last flight leaving Malé at 23:00. On departure the resort takes guests to the airport at least 3 hours before their flight.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: Angaga is an island with no roads, reached by seaplane or, in the evening, by the domestic transfer the resort policy mentions. The Google Hotels listing shows «Parking» among its amenities, but no source describes any parking, and the island is walked barefoot.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach, which runs right round the island, and from the steps of the water bungalows. One side has the shallow lagoon and the sandbank, the other the reef, a few metres off the shore according to the travel page and 7 to 8 metres according to Tripadvisor.

Under the Premium Water Bungalows the water is at least 2 metres deep even at low tide, over sand with few fish, wrote a guest in July 2026. Along the eroding side the shore is shored up with sandbags, and the widest beach is on the opposite side, where the sand settles.

Is there a house reef you can swim to?

Yes. It is a recurring reason reviewers give for choosing Angaga. The travel page describes it all round the island and among the best in the Maldives, the official page reached from the main jetty, with stingrays, sharks and turtles. Experienced divers, with at least 30 dives in the past 18 months, may dive the house reef unguided and without limit after a check dive, according to the dive centre.

Guests in 2025 and 2026 report blacktip and whitetip sharks, stingrays, eagle rays, turtles and octopus there; several mention bleached coral. The dive centre recalls the bleaching of 2015–16 and a coral nursery you can see while snorkelling.

Is there a pool?

Yes, though the website does not present it. Google Hotels lists an outdoor pool and Booking.com a serene swimming pool; according to guests it was under construction in September 2024 and open by January 2025, between the main bar and the shop, like a terrace set in the greenery.

No source gives its size. Until 2024 Angaga had no pool; none of the bungalows has a private pool.

Is the pool heated, and when is it open?

A guest in June 2026 wrote that the pool stays open until 18:00. No source gives its temperature or mentions heating, and the website publishes no hours; the resort’s general information sheet, from 2018, predates the pool.

Where do you eat, and until what time?

At the Dolphin Restaurant, the only restaurant, with 3 buffet meals: breakfast from 7:30 to 10, lunch from 12:30 to 14:00, or 13:00 to 14:30 on Fridays, and dinner from 19:30 to 21:00. The food ranges from Italian to Indian and Maldivian, with a Maldivian night on Tuesdays, halal and vegetarian dishes, and seafood on request at extra cost.

The beach bar doubles as a coffee shop, with a menu of sandwiches, pasta and curries, and opens from 8:00 to midnight, like Sundown Bar over the water; a band plays on Saturdays. Guests in 2026 praise the curries, the live cooking stations and the desserts; on variety they differ: for some the buffet changes every day, for others it comes round to the same dishes after a few days.

Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?

According to the resort policy, half board, buffet breakfast and dinner, is included in every rate. Per person per night, full board adds $33, half board plus, with drinks, $51, and all-inclusive, with lunch as well, $74.

The all-inclusive sheet lists water, soft drinks, canned juices, beer, house wine, house spirits and selected cocktails by the glass, tea and regular coffee, sandwiches and cakes from 10:00 to 11:30 and 15:00 to 17:00, one dhoni excursion, snorkelling gear and the gym. Fresh juices, espresso and cappuccino, premium brands, bottled wine and champagne are excluded; a guest in July 2026 wrote that the minibar is not covered and that the plan ends at 14:00 on departure day.

What is the spa like?

Duny Thai Spa stands over the water at the end of a jetty, as the official photographs show and a guest described in August 2025. It offers Thai and Western massages, facials, scrubs and wraps, and a romance bath in the couples’ packages; the site gives neither its size nor its number of treatment rooms.

No official source mentions a sauna, steam room or whirlpool. Guests in 2025 and 2026 praise the therapists; on Angaga women work only in the spa, a guest noted in July 2026.

Is the spa included or paid, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are paid for: the price list quotes them plus a 10% service charge, and no meal plan covers them. No official page publishes spa access included in the rate or a day pass for visitors, and Angaga, reached only by seaplane or boat, has no one on it but the resort’s guests.

What are the spa’s opening hours?

From 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 20:00, according to the resort’s general information sheet, a PDF from 2018; the spa page gives no hours. For the couple’s massage in the wedding package, the weddings page asks for a booking before arrival.

Which treatments does it offer, and at what prices?

From the PDF price list of March 2018, plus 10% service: traditional Thai, Royal Thai aromatic, hot-stone or Swedish massage at $80 for 50 minutes and $135 for 90; back, neck and head or foot reflexology at $80, scrubs and wraps at $75, facials at $80.

Packages run from $150 to $250: A Touch of Thai at $150 for 90 minutes or $170 for 2 hours, You & Me for a couple at $250. A manicure or a pedicure costs $65. A 2025 PDF on the same site warns that published prices may be out of date.

Can you go with children?

Yes: Booking.com says children of all ages are welcome. The resort policy makes the seaplane, cot and meals free under 2 and takes 50% off the seaplane from 2 to 11; excursions are half price for the same ages. Each bungalow sleeps up to 3, with one extra bed at most.

No source mentions a kids’ club. The dive centre runs Bubblemaker from age 8 and try-dives from 10; the shallow lagoon by the sandbank suits small children, guests write, and in November 2025 one family remarked that there were no children on the island.

What is on the island besides the bungalows?

According to the official pages: the restaurant, 2 bars, the spa, the dive centre and the water-sports centre, with canoes, catamaran, windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and jet-ski tours, a grass tennis court, badminton, beach volleyball, table tennis, darts, table football, the gym, a library of 100 titles open round the clock and the shop, listed on the other facilities page.

Guests in 2024 and 2026 also mention a doctor on the island, budgerigars flying free among the palms and fruit bats in the evening. Booking.com says pets are not allowed.

Are there any special offers?

The website has no offers page and no booking engine: availability is requested through a form or by email, and under the resort policy a quoted rate holds for 24 hours and the deposit is the full amount. The travel page names May to November as low season, with the best rates.

The dive centre takes up to 10% off packages booked ahead on its own site. On the Google Hotels calendar of 6 October 2026, the offers came from Priceline and Agoda, not from the resort.

Can you get married on Angaga?

Yes, in a symbolic ceremony with no legal standing: the weddings page publishes a package at $1,500, plus 10% service and T-GST, which the page puts at 12%, with a minimum stay of 3 nights, excluding accommodation, meals and transfers.

It covers a coordinator, a celebrant, a decorated parasol, bodu beru drummers, a bouquet, a palm to plant, a cake, a couple’s massage, a sunset dhoni sail, a candlelit dinner on the beach and photographs by the staff. The page gives no guest numbers, and the ceremony depends on the weather.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

Yes: the resort policy prices New Year’s Eve dinner at $100 per adult and $100 per child, and the compulsory Christmas Eve dinner at $100 per adult and $50 per child, with service and tax on top. The site publishes no menu or programme.

On the Google Hotels calendar read on 6 October 2026, the nights of 28, 30 and 31 December had no price, which does not mean the resort was full or closed.

Can you play golf?

The official pages consulted list no golf. On the island there is tennis, badminton and beach volleyball, and the activities are mostly in the water, diving, snorkelling and water sports, according to the sports page.

When is it open, and when is the best season?

The official pages consulted announce no seasonal closure; confirm operation for your dates. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 110 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price and the other 7 did not, which does not mean the resort was closed.

The travel page gives the high season as November to April, when booking early is wise, and the low season as May to November. Whale sharks are seen all year and mantas mostly from December to March, according to the dive centre.

How much does a night cost?

Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 2 adults for one night, taxes and fees included: $287 on 7 October 2026, $386 on 1 November, $518 on 10 November, $362 on 1 December, $585 on 24 December, $728 on 1 January 2027, $477 on 10 January and $502 on 21 January 2027.

Of the 117 nights read, 110 had a price, from $287 to $728; the calendar shows the lowest price and names neither the bungalow nor the meal plan. For 7 October the lowest was Priceline’s, $287 for a Superior Beach Bungalow; the official site was not among the sellers. There was no price at all on 8, 17 and 19 November, 28, 30 and 31 December and 3 January.

Under the resort policy, rates are per room per night for 2 and include the 10% service charge, 17% GST and half board; the Green Tax of $12 per person per night and the seaplane are extra.

What do the reviews say?

On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.6/5 from 775 ratings and Trip.com 4.3/5 from 51; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.3/5 from 719, with a Travellers’ Choice 2026 award and 4.7 for location, and Booking.com 8.6/10 from 490 reviews gathered on other sites.

Across the 491 Google reviews with text, the reef and the setting win almost everyone over: 83% of the 255 guests who discuss them are positive, as are 75% of the 317 who discuss staff and services. Guests who praise the price call it one of the cheapest islands in the Maldives; extras are charged separately, from a $4.50 espresso to mineral water at $3.50, and the newest bungalows are the Premiums.

Which taxes and charges are added?

According to the resort policy, rates include the 10% service charge, 17% GST and government taxes, with the Green Tax of $12 per person per night added. Everything else, bars, excursions, menus, carries 10% service and then 17% on the total, as the drinks menu of 2025 and the excursions page print.

Some older documents on the same site, such as the weddings page and the general information sheet of 2018, still give T-GST at 12%, and the spa price list mentions only the service charge. The Google Hotels listing speaks of a resort fee, which the official policy does not mention.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in from 14:00 and check-out by noon, according to the resort policy and Google Hotels. The seaplane may land earlier or leave later: a guest in July 2026 had a late check-out at 14:00.
