Drift suits couples who want quiet days and a villa over the lagoon, with nights from $740 for 2 adults, the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night. For a holiday built around a choice of restaurants and lively evenings, I would choose a larger island.

For a stay over the water, I would ask for a Water Villa: the king-size bed faces floor-to-ceiling windows, and the bathroom has an ocean-view bath, so the view continues beyond the private terrace.
The cheaper June week
The calendar read on 12 October 2026 showed each night from 3 to 9 June 2027 at $740 for 2 adults. Its dearest nights were 2 March, 19 March and 21 March 2027, each at $2,180.
Budget for the crossing
The public speedboat ferry costs $250 per person return, with full payment and booking required at least 3 days ahead. It goes through Dhangethi and takes about 1.5 hours, weather permitting; a separate operator runs it.
Book the meal upgrade
For breakfast and dinner together, the direct-booking offer gives a complimentary upgrade from breakfast to half board with code SUMMER26. I would use that offer when choosing the meal plan for a Water Villa.
What Drift is
Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat calls itself a 4-star boutique resort, on an island of just over a hectare in South Ari Atoll, 90 km west of Malé. There are 30 villas: 10 Beach Villas of 39 m² on the sand and 20 Water Villas of 54 m² on stilts in the lagoon, each for 2. There is one restaurant, open to the beach, and one beach bar facing the sunset; the spa stands over the water. Booking.com says children are not allowed, and many guests chose it precisely because it is sold as an island for adults.
People come for the sea. The reef rings the island, and the Water Villas have a ladder straight down into the lagoon: guests in 2025 and 2026 describe blacktip and nurse sharks, turtles, eagle rays and octopus, and small sharks under the jetty at night. Whale Shark Point, the stretch of the atoll home to more than 80 whale sharks, is 30 minutes away by speedboat. Guests come back to the twice-daily housekeeping, the powder-fine sand and staff they mention by name.
Everything here is cut to the island’s size. One restaurant, one bar, no pool and no evening entertainment; the buffet is a small one, and after dinner there is only the sound of the sea. The extras have their own price list, from a $9 cappuccino to a beach dinner at $350 a couple, and excursions run only with a minimum number of guests. The seaplane costs $433 an adult on the resort’s own booking site. In December 2025 a Maldivian court allowed Bank of Ceylon to sell the resort’s lease over an unpaid loan; on 6 October 2026 the booking site was still selling nights to January 2027, from $853 for 2 with breakfast, taxes included.
In the Lumina Guide
Lumina Guide 2027
Drift is a one-hectare island of 30 villas in South Ari Atoll: the reef rings it, the Water Villa ladder drops you among sharks and turtles, and the whale sharks are 30 minutes away by speedboat.
What do Drift’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Location
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the reef that rings the island, the sharks and turtles a few metres off the shore and the quiet of an island you walk round barefoot in 10 minutes.
Room
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests come back to the Water Villas with a ladder down into the sea, the generous space of the villas and the twice-daily housekeeping.
Staff and service
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember waiters and front-desk staff by name, and write about the housekeeping and the trips the resort organises, out to the whale sharks.
Breakfast
Breakfast is a buffet in the open-air restaurant, with eggs cooked to order, or it can be ordered in the villa from 7.30am to noon; those who write about it praise the buffet and the dishes cooked in front of them.
Price
When guests write about money here they write about extras: water, coffee, excursions and whatever the all-inclusive leaves out.

The scores come from 170 Google reviews with text, left from 25 June 2016 to 29 August 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in South Ari Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in South Ari Atoll:
Price: for two on the night of 18 May 2027, from $740 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
What a night costs, season by season
On 12 October 2026, Google showed nights for 2 adults between $740 and $811 from 14 May to 18 July 2027, rising to $811–$888 from 19 July to 5 September. For a longer stay I would compare the whole booking before choosing: 25 December alone had fallen from $1,427 to $533 between 4 and 12 October 2026.

The lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night searched alone, for 2 adults. Read 12 October 2026; the calendar stops on 5 September 2027, not at the end of a season, and gaps mean no price. Lone low nights: 27 October 2026 at $676; 30 October at $657; 4 November at $535; 10 November at $541; 25 December and 3 January 2027 at $533 each. For 10 November 2026, Google showed $541 on 12 October; the resort’s own site had asked $888 on 6 October.
Drift, Mirihi or Lily Beach
Mirihi is the other small South Ari island to consider for a quiet stay with beach and water villas. Lily Beach suits travellers who want pools and a broader all-inclusive offering.
Lowest price for one night searched alone for 2 adults during 5–11 April 2027, read on Google on 12 October 2026; the figures do not identify a room or meal plan.
What to expect
The restaurant on the sand, the spa over the water, the reef off the beach and the whale sharks.
Buffet and à la carte under a great timber roof, with a chef cooking eggs, fish and meat to order and themed evenings. Guests write of the local fish, on the table every day; the buffet is scaled to an island of 30 villas, with a handful of dishes at each meal.
Treatment rooms on stilts, with a published menu: the 60-minute Drift Massage at $220, a Balinese massage at $150, the couple's massage at $285 and the Full Moon Ritual, 3 nights a month, at $375 for 2.
The activities page puts it a short swim away, and guests reach it from the beach or the Water Villa ladder, with masks and fins on loan. Guided snorkelling on the house reef costs $70 a person, the night snorkel $110.
Whale Shark Point, near Maamigili, is 30 minutes away by speedboat. The trip costs $175 a person, or $700 a couple privately; in September 2025 one couple never went, because it needed at least 6 people.
Espresso and cappuccino are not covered by the all-inclusive, guests wrote in 2021 and 2025. Source: 170 Google reviews read, 25 June 2016 to 29 August 2026
Getting there costs: the booking site adds the seaplane at $433 an adult and $260 a child, and transfers run only between 9am and 5pm. The alternative is the scheduled speedboat ferry, $250 a person return, about an hour and a half.
There is no pool: no official page mentions one, no photograph shows one and no guest describes one. Google Hotels lists a pool among its amenities, and it is wrong.
Extras have their own price list: a cappuccino $9, a litre of water $4, a romantic beach dinner $350 a couple. Excursions run only with a minimum number of people.
One restaurant, one bar and no entertainment: the island is silent in the evening, which is how those who choose it want it.
Booking.com says children are not allowed and that those aged 2 to 10 cannot stay; there are no cots or extra beds. Even so, guests saw children on the island in 2021 and in June 2025.
35 minutes from Malé airport to the island; booked only through the resort, with flight details sent at least 2 days ahead
Cost
$433 an adult and $260 a child on the booking site, 6 October 2026; Booking.com gives $462.15 an adult, not included in the price

Ferry
The scheduled speedboat Malé, Dhangethi, Drift: $250 a person return, about an hour and a half, booked 3 days ahead
On arrival
Check-in from 2pm and check-out by noon; on the day you leave, the all-inclusive ends at noon

A few rooms, just peace
In August 2026 an Italian couple on their first Maldives trip wanted a small island with few rooms and no entertainment. They found rooms cleaned twice a day and very good food, if a little samey at dinner.
In March 2026 a couple in a Water Villa climbed down the ladder into the sea and saw turtles, blacktip and nurse sharks on the reef. Fearing boredom, they found the days flew by, always barefoot.
In May 2026 an Italian guest found the all-inclusive little more than full board, with snacks only from 4pm to 5pm, excursions from $200 a person and the beach disappearing in the afternoon.
In February 2026, 2 divers loved the small, quiet island and the Water Villas. Of the dive centre, run separately, they report carbon monoxide poisoning from bad air and no nitrox.
In September 2025 a honeymoon couple snorkelled every day with the free gear. They wanted the whale sharks, but the trip needed 6 people and there were only ever 4 of them.
In July 2025 a couple praised the food, the cocktails and a reef full of sharks, and criticised coffee left out of the all-inclusive, the $20 snack credit and a child on an adults-only island.
The questions people ask before booking Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat?
A 4-star boutique resort, as it describes itself, on Thelu Veliga, an island of just over a hectare in South Ari Atoll, 90 km west of Malé. It has 30 villas, 10 on the beach and 20 over the water, one restaurant, one bar and an overwater spa; in 2025 it won 2 World Luxury Hotel Awards for the Indian Ocean. Its class depends on the source: 4 stars on Google, 4.5 on its booking site, 3.5 on Expedia.
The first Google reviews date from 2016. According to The Edition of 8 December 2025, a Maldivian civil court allowed Bank of Ceylon, for the third time, to sell the resort's lease, mortgaged against a $9.1 million loan that the company Castaway Maldives had not repaid, at a minimum price of $9.9 million; the owner said he would appeal to the Supreme Court. Guests went on staying through 2026, and on 6 October 2026 the booking site was selling nights to January 2027.
What villas are there, and how big are they?
2 types, as the villas page lists them. The 20 Water Villas, 54 m² according to the booking site, stand on stilts in the lagoon, with a private deck and a ladder into the water, a king-size bed facing floor-to-ceiling windows and a bath with a sea view. The 10 Beach Villas, 39 m², are round, set among the palms with their door on the beach, with the bed under a net canopy and an open-air shower.
Each sleeps 2 in a king-size bed, with air-conditioning, minibar, safe, kettle and free Wi-Fi. Booking.com offers no cots or extra beds, though a mother in June 2025 was given 2 single beds for her sons. No villa has a private pool.
Where is it, and what is the island like?
In South Ari Atoll, also called Alifu Dhaalu, 90 km west of Malé according to the website: just over a hectare of white sand and thick greenery ringed by its lagoon. Guests walk round it in about 10 minutes and go barefoot throughout. The other resorts are far off, and to the north there is only open sea.
Around it lie some of the best-known dive sites in the Maldives, 10 to 40 minutes by boat according to the diving page, and Whale Shark Point is 30 minutes away by speedboat, near Maamigili. The nearest local island to visit is Dhangethi.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the transfer cost?
By seaplane, 35 minutes from Malé airport, which the transfers page calls mandatory and bookable only through the resort, with flight details sent at least 2 days ahead. The booking site, read on 6 October 2026, offers it at $433 an adult and $260 a child; Booking.com gives $462.15 an adult from 4 July 2025 to 1 August 2026, not included in the price, with transfers only between 9am and 5pm.
The same page offers an alternative, though: the scheduled speedboat ferry from Malé via Dhangethi, $250 a person return, about an hour and a half in normal weather, paid and booked 3 days ahead and run by a third party.
Can you arrive by car, and is there parking?
No: Thelu Veliga is an island reached only by seaplane or boat, with no roads or cars, and you walk round it in minutes. Google Hotels and Tripadvisor list parking, and they are wrong: no official page mentions it.
How do you get into the sea?
From the beach, which runs right round the island, or from the deck of the Water Villas, which have direct access to the lagoon by a ladder. The water in front of the water villas is shallow, one guest wrote in 2023, and another noted plenty of fish already visible off the beach; a guest in 2021 recommended reef shoes, as there is a lot of coral beneath the villas.
Masks and fins in every size are on loan, and the house reef is a short swim from the shore, according to the activities page of the website.
Is there a reef you can swim to?
Yes: the activities page puts the house reef a short swim away, with masks and fins in every size on loan, and the home page speaks of thriving marine life and coral. Guests in 2025 and 2026 saw blacktip and nurse sharks, turtles, eagle rays and octopus, even snorkelling round the jetty, and on Tripadvisor in August 2026 a guest who knows more than 20 Maldivian resorts called it the best house reef he had seen.
Guided house-reef snorkelling costs $70 a person and the night snorkel $110, according to the price list. The coral is recovering, guests write: in 2022 one described a house reef growing back, in November 2024 another wrote that the corals are coming back, and in March 2025 a third found them healthy.
Is there a pool?
No. No official page, none of the website's photographs and none of the reviews read mentions a pool. Google Hotels lists one among its popular amenities, and it is wrong. You swim in the lagoon and on the reef, straight from the beach or from a Water Villa's deck.
Are the pools heated, and when are they open?
With no pool, the water is the lagoon's, warm all year: a guest who feels the cold never needed a jacket in March 2026. The website publishes no hours for the beach; a guest in May 2026 writes that swimming was not allowed after 5:30pm.
Where do you eat, and until what time?
In one restaurant, open-air, with a buffet and à la carte dishes, local fish, themed evenings and live cooking, and at the beach bar, which serves light meals and snacks all day. In the villa, breakfast can be ordered from 7:30am to noon and the all-day menu from 9am to 11pm, according to the in-villa menu.
Private dining has its own price list: a romantic beach dinner at $350 a couple, a beach barbecue at $385, an in-villa champagne breakfast at $200; the dining experiences menu offers honeymooners a complimentary dinner. Guests praise the quality, and the buffet offers a handful of dishes at each meal.
What meal plans are there, and what does the all-inclusive cover?
The booking site, read on 6 October 2026, sells the villas with breakfast and promises those who book there a free upgrade to half board, as the offers page does with the code SUMMER26. On top come full board, $115 a person a night, and the all-inclusive, $255 an adult and $128 a child: breakfast, lunch and dinner in the restaurant, selected wines and sparkling wines, house spirits and the signature cocktails.
According to Booking.com the all-inclusive also covers draught beer and house wine by the glass with meals, the bar from 10am to 11pm, lunch at the bar with a $20 credit a person, snacks from 4pm to 5pm, snorkelling gear, kayaks and paddleboards, one fishing trip and, in the minibar, 2 soft drinks, 2 beers and 2 bottles of water of 1.5 litres a day. Espresso and cappuccino stay outside it, guests wrote in 2021 and 2025.
What is the spa like?
The spa stands over the water, with treatment rooms on stilts looking over the lagoon, and offers Indonesian, Thai and Indian massages, face and body treatments and open-air evening rituals. Booking.com calls it the Intimate Spa by THEMAE.
The website gives no floor area or number of rooms, and no page mentions a sauna, steam room or gym. Guests remember the view from the rooms and the therapists’ skill.
Is the spa included or paid, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are paid for, even on all-inclusive, at the prices of the spa menu, which include service and GST. The renewal of vows package includes a treatment for each of the couple.
The website publishes no day pass for anyone not staying on the island. The only trace is a guest from a nearby island who in February 2019 paid $75 plus $17 tax for a day pass with the reef, the showers and lunch, arranging his own boat.
What are the spa's opening hours?
The website publishes no spa hours: treatments are booked on the island, at the spa reception. The menu gives times only for the evening rituals: the Full Moon Ritual on the 3 full-moon nights of the month and the Galaxy Ritual on the open deck at night.
What treatments are there, and at what prices?
The spa menu: the 60-minute Drift Massage with virgin coconut oil at $220; Balinese and deep-tissue massages at $150; Thai, cowrie-shell and coconut-shell massages at $185; the couple's massage at $285 for 2; the 90-minute Drift signature scrub and massage at $275 and the 60-minute Ayurvedic massage at $220.
The couple's rituals cost $375, the Full Moon Ritual, and $285, the Galaxy Ritual; facials run from $70 to $185, sunrise or sunset yoga and meditation $75, a private yoga class $110. Prices include service and GST.
Is it suitable for children?
Hardly. Booking.com says children are not allowed and that those aged 2 to 10 cannot stay, with no cots or extra beds; the villas sleep 2 and no page mentions a kids' club. Many guests between 2020 and 2025 chose it as an island for adults.
The rule has not always held: in 2021, 3 guests found children on the island, and in June 2025 a mother with 3 sons was given 2 single beds in the villa and praised the resort. The official website publishes no minimum age.
What else is on the island besides the villas?
A restaurant, a beach bar, the overwater spa, a dive centre and a small shop by the reception, which the booking site says is open 24 hours. The water sports price list has kayaks, a transparent kayak and paddleboards, from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, and the activities fishing, dolphins, mantas, turtles, whale sharks and visits to a local island.
The dive centre is run by an outside team, guests write, and they praise its sites and guides; it dives on air only, with no nitrox, those of 2025 and 2026 report. There is no pool, gym or entertainment, and the free Wi-Fi works better in the villas than across the rest of the island.
Are there any offers?
The offers page, read on 6 October 2026, promises up to 55% off and, for those who book on the website with the code SUMMER26, a free upgrade from breakfast to half board, with the option to pay later; the home page speaks of up to 70% off. Rates include 10% service, 17% GST and the green tax.
For honeymooners the dining experiences menu offers a dinner. No page publishes a priced package of nights.
Can you get married at Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat?
Not legally: the weddings page warns that ceremonies in the Maldives are not recognised in your home country and are a symbolic gesture. The resort arranges a Maldivian-style blessing or renewal of vows, on the beach or on a sandbank.
The package costs $2,500 a couple, villa not included, and covers the ceremony with bodu beru drummers, the bouquet, a 3-tier cake, the certificate, a sunset cruise, a private beach dinner, a spa treatment each, a champagne breakfast and the photographer. The updated activities price list gives $3,500 for the ceremony alone.
Is there a New Year's Eve dinner?
The website publishes no festive programme or gala dinner. On the booking site, read on 6 October 2026, the night of 31 December cost $1,427 in a Water Villa and $1,275 in a Beach Villa, for 2 with breakfast, with no gala supplement, and was already sold out. One guest spent Christmas 2019 here and remembers it as unforgettable.
Can you play golf?
No. The island is just over a hectare and no official page mentions golf, tennis or any other sport on land: everything happens in the water, from snorkelling and diving to kayaks, paddleboards and fishing.
When is it open, and when is the best season?
All year, as far as the sources show: the booking site, read on 6 October 2026, was selling nights from October 2026 to January 2027, and guests have stayed in every season. Some nights, such as 10 November and 12 January, had no villa available, and Google Hotels showed no price for most of November: that does not mean the resort is closed.
The website does not describe the seasons. Guests mention rain and wind in October, with the monsoon, but also more fish and mantas round the island because of the plankton, and steady warm weather in March.
How much does a night cost?
On Google Hotels, on 6 October 2026, a night for 2 cost $853 on 8 October, $888 on 1 November, $1,040 on 1 December, $1,427 on 22 December and $1,142 on 11 January 2027, taxes and fees included, meaning 10% service, 17% GST and the green tax, with no villa named. The resort’s booking site, read the same day, asked the same figures: on 20 October $853 for the Beach Villa, sold out, and $1,007 for the Water Villa, on 8 December $1,040 for the Water Villa, breakfast included each time.
The price leaves out the seaplane, meal-plan supplements and extras. For 7 October Google's card showed only online agencies, from $1,508 upwards, and for many nights in November, December and January no price at all: on 10 November and 31 December the resort's own site had no villa available.
What do the reviews say?
Google, read on 3 October 2026, gave 4.5/5 from 262 ratings, 80% of them 5 stars; Tripadvisor 4.4/5 from 439, with a 2026 Travellers’ Choice, and Booking.com 9.3/10 from 140, with 9.9 for staff and 8.9 for value. Of the 170 Google reviews with text, 85% of those discussing location are positive, 81% of those on the villas and 75% on the staff; on price, guests write mostly about the extras: water, coffee, excursions.
Guests praise the tiny, silent island, the reef, the Water Villas, the twice-daily housekeeping and the staff. Worth knowing beforehand: extras and excursions have their own price list, the all-inclusive leaves out espresso coffee, the buffet is a small one and the Wi-Fi works better in the villa than across the rest of the island.
What taxes and surcharges are added?
On the night itself, none: the offers page says rates include 10% service, 17% GST and the green tax of $12 a person a night, and the booking site builds them into the price. On top come the seaplane, $433 an adult, or the ferry, $250, and any meal-plan supplements.
The excursion, spa and drinks price lists are also in dollars with service and GST included.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to Booking.com, which asks you to give your arrival time in advance. The real time is set by the seaplane: in 2021 a couple who landed at 8am had their villa at once and kept it until 3pm on the day they left, while in 2024 other guests gave up their villa at noon for a seaplane that came at 5:10pm.
