Athuruga suits couples who want Italian cooking, wine and cocktails on an all-inclusive stay, with the lowest seller on Google showing a night for 2 adults from $567. If you want to change neighbourhood each evening, I would choose a town base.

Athuruga’s white beach running down into the pale lagoon under a lightly clouded sky.
  1. The villa to request

I would ask for a Water Villa: its private terrace has direct water access, and the walk-in shower opens onto the terrace, useful when coming back from a swim.

  2. The less expensive week

On 12 October 2026, Google showed each night from 12 to 18 May 2027 at $567 for 2 adults; the dearest nights, 2–7 January 2027, reached $1,619.

  3. Add the seaplane fare

For a rate without transfers, budget $590 per adult aged 12 or over for the return seaplane from 1 November 2026 to 15 April 2027. Through 31 October 2026, the fare is $560 per adult return.

  4. Follow the reef guide

2 guests, writing in May 2023 and July 2026, describe guided reef outings twice a day. Snorkelling equipment and a guided reef tour are included with the all-inclusive.

What Athuruga is

Diamonds Athuruga is the only resort on Athuruga, a small island in South Ari Atoll, and belongs to the Planhotel Hospitality Group, founded in Lugano in 1997, which also runs Diamonds Thudufushi in the same atoll. Since 2025 the resort signs its Google replies «ananea Diamonds Athuruga», the name under which DERTOUR’s ananea brand sells it. The 2024 fact sheet counts 70 rooms: beach villas with open-air showers, beach junior suites, water villas on stilts and 2-bedroom water villas with an outdoor jacuzzi.

The days turn on the sea. The house reef is a few metres from the beach, guided snorkelling tours are part of the all-inclusive, and the Marine Lab’s biologists, working with the University of Milano-Bicocca, have been regrowing coral since 2015; whale sharks feed all year in the marine protected area to the south. Of the 298 Google reviews with text, 92% of those discussing the location are positive, and 89% of those discussing the staff and services.

It is an island to choose for the sea: small, quiet and barefoot. The seaplane, the restaurants outside the all-inclusive, the spa and the excursions are charged separately: in November 2025 a guest paid $200 a head for the whale-shark trip. Between summer 2025 and January 2026 guests describe stretches of beach eaten away by the sea, with sandbags holding the shoreline in front of some bungalows; the official pages put the Wi-Fi at reception and in the Water Villas; in the bars and the restaurant, guests say in 2026, it does not reach every corner.

The scores come from 298 Google reviews with text, left from 19 July 2015 to 1 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in South Ari Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in South Ari Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 12 May 2027, from $567 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

Thari over the water, Maakeyn on the beach

Maakeyn, the main restaurant beside the beach, serves 3 buffets a day, with Italian dishes, grilled fish and Asian plates from an open kitchen and a wood-fired grill, and a different theme every night. Thari, the à la carte restaurant over the water, cooks fusion dishes and is included for Water Villa guests; others pay, $35 a meal according to ananea’s site.

Serena Spa above the lagoon

Serena Spa blends Ayurveda with European aromatherapy and South-East Asian remedies, and its page describes it as an escape above the water. The brochure it links, from 2017, prices a 90-minute Marma massage at $133 and a 60-minute Thai yoga massage at $97, with 12% tax and 10% service on top; treatments are booked online between 9am and 7pm.

The reef from the beach

Guests describe eagle rays, stingrays, reef sharks, turtles and octopuses a few strokes from the shore. The marine biologists identify each turtle by its face and shell, and a guest who meets a new one names it; in June 2026 a guest who has stayed at 27 Maldives resorts advised asking for a water villa on the south side, in front of the best reef.

  • Wi-Fi is included at reception and in the Water Villas. Source: athurugabeach.diamondsresorts.com

  • The seaplane is extra unless you book 6 nights or more on the official website. Flights run in daylight; the last direct one leaves Malé at 3pm, the group’s FAQ says.

  • Not every beach villa faces the same beach. Between August 2025 and January 2026, 3 Google reviews describe stretches eaten away by the sea, 2 of them with sandbags behind some bungalows’ terraces to hold the shoreline: when booking, it is worth asking which stretch the villa is on.

  • There is no swimming pool on the island. Google Hotels lists a pool, but no official page describes one; the only water to soak in is the outdoor jacuzzi of the Two Bedroom Pool Water Villas.

  • Children are welcome: cots are free and an extra bed costs 40% of the rate up to 11, on Booking.com. Under-8s may stay in the Water Villas only with a disclaimer signed by their parents, and no official page mentions a kids’ club.

  • Between February 2025 and March 2026, 3 Google reviews describe villas and bathrooms in need of renovation.

Questions before you go

What people ask before booking Diamonds Athuruga, with answers from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Diamonds Athuruga?

A 5-star resort on Google Hotels and the only one on the island of Athuruga, in South Ari Atoll, run by the Planhotel Hospitality Group of Lugano, founded in 1997; the 2024 fact sheet counts 70 rooms in beach villas, beach junior suites, water villas and 2-bedroom water villas. Its sister island, Diamonds Thudufushi, is in the same atoll.

Since 2025 the resort signs its Google replies «ananea Diamonds Athuruga», and DERTOUR’s ananea site sells it under that name, as a lifestyle resort of 70 rooms in 3 categories; the official website still calls it Diamonds Athuruga. Its awards page lists World Luxury Hotel Awards for water villas in 2017 and 2018.

Which villas are there and how big are they?

6 types on the official booking engine, read on 6 October 2026: Beach Front Villa, Beach Experience Villa and Lagoon Villa, 45 m² each; Beach Front Junior Suite, 70 m²; Water Villa, 150 m²; Two Bedroom Pool Water Villa, 250 m², up to 6 guests. The website has pages for 5 of them; the Beach Experience Villa appears only on the engine and Booking.com.

The official booking engine, read again on 15 October 2026, still gives 45 m² for the Beach Front Villa, 70 m² for the Junior Suite and 150 m² for the Water Villa. No source says how many of the 70 rooms belong to each type. Beach villas have a double bed, an open-air shower and a veranda; water villas a four-poster king bed and steps into the lagoon; none has a television, according to Google Hotels.

Where is it, and is the island quiet?

In South Ari (Alifu Dhaalu) Atoll, about 25 minutes by seaplane from Malé, according to the official page; the Google listing gives «South Ari Atoll, Athuruga Island 00130». The island is small and round, with the water villas on a jetty off one side, and the south of the atoll is a marine protected area where whale sharks feed all year.

Guests describe it as quiet, with no loud parties, and an evening programme of live music and shows. Many guests come through Italian tour operators, and Tripadvisor lists Italian, English and German among the languages spoken.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?

Some guests in 2025 came by speedboat, 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours at sea.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: Athuruga is an island reached by seaplane or boat, with sandy paths and no roads. The Google Hotels card lists «Parking» among its amenities, but no official page mentions one, and there is nowhere to drive.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach, which rings the island: the beach villas open straight onto the sand, and the Water Villas have a terrace with direct access to the lagoon. A guest in October 2026 praised an entry into the ocean with no seaweed.

The beach is not the same everywhere: between summer 2025 and January 2026 guests describe stretches eaten away by the sea, with sandbags holding the shoreline in front of some bungalows, where there is no walking straight into the water. Canoes and windsurfs are on the all-inclusive.

Is there a house reef you can swim to?

Yes. ananea’s site puts the house reef a few metres from the beach, and guests in 2025 and 2026 describe eagle rays, stingrays, reef sharks, turtles and octopuses a few strokes from shore. The all-inclusive includes snorkelling equipment and a guided reef tour, and the water sports page lists snorkelling boats, sunset snorkelling and lessons on request.

The Marine Lab identifies the reef’s turtles by their markings, and a guest who photographs a new one names it. In June 2026 a guest advised the water villas on the south side, in front of the best stretch of reef.

What pools are there?

None shared: no official page describes a swimming pool, although Google Hotels lists one. The only water to soak in is the outdoor jacuzzi of the Two Bedroom Pool Water Villas, which the fact sheet calls a jacuzzi outdoor pool.

Is the pool heated, and when is it open?

There is no pool to heat: the resort has no shared swimming pool, and the website gives no temperature or hours for the jacuzzi of the Two Bedroom Pool Water Villas. Guests swim in the lagoon, warm and clear in their accounts all year.

Where can you eat, and until when?

Maakeyn, the buffet beside the beach, 157 seats: breakfast 7.30 to 10am, lunch 1 to 2.30pm, dinner 7.30 to 9.30pm with a theme each night. The website gives no floor area, number of rooms or zones, and no official page mentions a sauna, steam room, pool or gym.

Guests in 2023 and 2026 praise the massages and the therapists.

Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are paid and are not part of the all-inclusive, which the Diamonds FAQ says excludes spa treatments. Honeymooners get 20% off; the honeymoon page names the discount for «Mvua African Rain Spa», a name from another Planhotel resort; on Athuruga the spa is Serena Spa.

No page publishes a day pass or spa access for anyone not staying, and the island is reached only by seaplane or boat. Treatments are booked through the spa page’s form or on arrival.

What are the spa’s opening hours?

The spa page gives no opening hours; its online booking form offers slots from 9am to 7pm, and changes or cancellations go to the spa in writing by email.

The activities page lists beach volleyball, billiards, darts, table football, table tennis, yoga, Pilates and water gymnastics, and an excursion to a fishermen’s island. Guests in 2026 say the Wi-Fi does not reach every corner of the bars and the restaurant; in October 2025 a guest wrote that a router can be rented for the villa.

Options include a ceremony on a sandbank, a custom cake, bouquet and buttonhole, photography or video, the bride’s hair and make-up and a lunch or dinner for guests. The page gives no price and no capacity.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

The website publishes no programme for 31 December 2026. Last season, Dining with the Stars, the gala dinners of the JRE chefs, ran from 21 December 2025 to 5 January 2026 with an Italian chef and then until 13 April 2026; no dates for a new edition appear. For 31 December 2026 the official engine sold only the all-inclusive, at $2,002 for 2 in a Lagoon Villa with taxes.

A couple wrote in January 2026 that the island is their second home for Christmas and New Year.

Can you play golf?

Not on Athuruga: no official page mentions golf, a driving range or a green fee, and the activities page lists beach volleyball, billiards, table tennis, yoga and Pilates instead.

When is it open, and when is the best season?

All year: no official page announces a closure. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 79 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price; the other 38, among them 24 October, 5 to 7 November and 25 December to 1 January, showed none, and on the same day the official engine refused check-in on most of those nights before 21 December, nights sold out on the website rather than a closure.

Whale sharks feed in the marine protected area all year, according to the Marine Lab. The summer dive package calls the summer the ocean season, with fewer boats and dramatic skies; guests in August and September 2025 had little rain in the rainy season.

How much does a night cost?

In the 298 Google reviews with text, 92% of those discussing the location are positive, 89% of those discussing staff and services and 83% of those discussing the villas. The praise goes to the reef a few strokes off the beach, the waiters who look after the same couple all stay, the snorkelling guides and the Marine Lab’s biologists. Excursions are charged separately, the Wi-Fi does not reach every corner of the bars and the restaurant, and sandbags hold the shoreline in front of some bungalows; some reviews also mention villas and bathrooms due a renovation.

What taxes and charges are added?

The official engine shows its rates without taxes and adds 28.7% to the total; Google Hotels’ figures for the Maldives include taxes and fees, and on 7 October 2026 Evendo’s listing on the card carried $152 of tax in its $597. The official pages read do not mention the green tax.

The 2017 spa brochure adds 12% tax and 10% service to its prices, and Booking.com adds taxes to excess seaplane luggage. The Diamonds FAQ says the all-inclusive excludes airport taxes, and that charges are signed to the room: no outlet accepts cash.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to Booking.com; booking on the official website adds early check-in or late check-out when available. The seaplane timetable decides the real hour of arrival and departure.
