Hondaafushi Island Resort, 79 bungalows on the beach of a 59-hectare island, in Haa Dhaalu Atoll at the far north of the Maldives, a 50-minute domestic flight from Malé and 10 minutes by speedboat
For couples content with buffet meals and a room on the sand, Hondaafushi starts at $169 for 2 adults: the lowest one-night price any seller showed on Google, from May 2027. If a villa above the lagoon is central to the trip, choose an island with overwater rooms.

I would ask for a Deluxe Beach Bungalow for its 89 m² and a bathtub alongside the outdoor shower: a detached room on the beachfront, with a private sundeck and a daybed.
The week to price
In the calendar read on 12 October 2026, each night from 6 to 12 May 2027 was $169 for 2 adults. The highest single night was 31 December 2026, at $1,945.
Cancelling a spa booking
A spa cancellation with less than 4 hours’ notice costs 50% of the treatment price; missing the appointment costs the full amount. The spa asks guests to arrive at least 15 minutes before their treatment.
Tea at Thila Bar
With the all-inclusive plan, leave room for tea at Thila Bar between 4pm and 6pm: tea, coffee and snacks are included, an afternoon stop before the evening meal.
What Hondaafushi is
Hondaafushi is in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, about 280 km north of Malé according to a group article, on a 59-hectare island with more than 5 km of beach, as the official 2026 fact sheet puts it. It is run by AAA Hotels & Resorts, which also owns Filitheyo and Medhufushi. Its 79 bungalows come in 4 types, all on the sand: 33 Superiors, 20 Sunset Superiors, 24 Deluxes and 2 Family Bungalows. There are no water villas.
The reason to come is space. Guests walk round the island on the sand in anything from 40 minutes to 3 hours, depending on pace and tide, and describe empty beaches even with the resort full; a unit on the island raises turtle hatchlings and releases them all year. Of the 103 Google reviews with text, 80% of those discussing the location are positive.
For the rest it is a 4-star resort with one buffet restaurant, no room service and every bungalow on the sand. Anyone who wants a water villa, a private pool or a choice of restaurants will be happier elsewhere. Domestic flights run only a few times a day, and the wait in Malé between flights can run to several hours. In September 2026 another 40 bungalows were being built on the far side of the island.

The scores come from 103 Google reviews with text, left from 26 November 2021 to 3 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay among the northern islands reached by domestic flight: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against among the northern islands reached by domestic flight:
Price: for two on the night of 1 May 2027, from $169 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
What a night costs, season by season
April 2027 showed $255 for a priced night for 2 adults, while the May-to-September calendar ranged from $169 to $1,201. I would compare an April stay with a May stay before choosing the dates.

What to expect
The buffet under the round pavilion, the spa at the end of a path and turtles going back to the sea.
The Main Restaurant is a large pavilion with a sand floor, halfway along the island: 3 buffets a day, 7.30 to 9.30am, 12.30 to 2.30pm and 7.30 to 9.30pm, with chefs at live cooking stations. The Thila Bar, on the tip of the island beside the pool, opens from 10am to midnight; from the Deluxes it is about a 12-minute walk, one guest writes, or you call the electric buggy.
The spa sits on the southern tip, near the Deluxes: rain showers, a herbal steam bath and a jacuzzi, with separate wet areas for men and women, and a twin suite for couples. The menu runs from a 30-minute back massage at $55 to 90 minutes of hot stones at $135, service and tax included.
The resort runs a turtle unit all year: hatchlings born on the island or rescued grow in tanks and are released with guests watching, as on 23 May 2026 on the beach in front of the restaurant. In September 2026 one guest saw young turtles from 7 days to 4 months old; visits are booked at reception.
Good to know before you book
The easiest way onto the house reef is the jetty on the west side; in September 2026 it was under repair after a cyclone and you went in from the beach. Source: aaaresorts.com
The transfer by domestic flight and speedboat is charged separately, and neither the official website nor Booking.com publishes the fare. Source: aaaresorts.com
The domestic flight to Hanimaadhoo runs only a few times a day, and the resort books it for its guests. Between June 2025 and February 2026 guests from 3 stays describe on Google waits of 3 to 8 hours in Malé between flights, in one case after leaving the island at 3am; 2 reviews, of May and December 2025, find the transfer well organised. If no seat is found, you spend the night in Malé at your own expense, says Booking.com.
The website describes an extensive house reef, and the easiest way in is the jetty on the west side; for sharks and turtles further out there is the boat trip.
The website counts 79 bungalows, but guests in 2025 and 2026 count 55 to 60, and in September 2026 another 40 were being built on the other side of the island. Between May 2024 and May 2026, 8 Google reviews describe bungalows and furnishings that show their age, and the official pages do not say when they were last renovated. None has a private pool.
The all-inclusive covers the buffets, afternoon tea from 4 to 6pm, house drinks by the glass from 10am to midnight and a minibar of soft drinks and water, restocked once a day; it gives 10% off the spa and 20% off excursions. After midnight everything is charged.
The website gives 2 versions on Wi-Fi: the activities page calls it chargeable in the public areas and, in the next paragraph, free in the rooms as well. Booking.com and Google Hotels list it as free.

Hondaafushi reviews
The platforms’ scores, read on 3 and 6 October 2026, and what guests say about the beach, the bungalows and the journey.
On 6 October 2026 Google Hotels showed 4.4/5 from 135 ratings, 78% of them 5 stars. The figures by theme come from all 103 reviews with text, from November 2021 to October 2026, in many languages, German and English above all; 2 actually describe Medhufushi, the sister island. They are accounts of stays we have not verified.
6 stays described on Google between December 2025 and September 2026.
Google
8 days with a one-year-old
In September 2026 a couple stayed 8 days with their one-year-old and found nothing to fault: the rooms, the beach, the staff, the cleanliness and the food. They have travelled the world, they write, and this is one of the places they want to go back to.
In September 2026 one guest found the snorkelling jetty broken by a cyclone and under repair: you went in from the beach and swam out to the edge. A snorkelling trip and a fishing trip came free; the manta trip was paid for, at 20% off, and found one.
In March 2026 a couple found an island given over to the resort, about 60 bungalows and empty beaches even when it was full. Room service and some polish are missing, the buggy is slow and the furniture dated; without half board the à la carte dinner is thin, and they recommend the lobster in a cabana on the beach.
In August 2026 a couple in a beach bungalow praised the minibar restocked daily, with 2 bottles of water included, and the station where the fruit you choose is cut. For snorkelling they suggest the boat: they saw fish, sharks and turtles only further out, on the reef.
In February 2026 a couple on their second stay found the island run down since their stay 2 years before: broken door handles, worn sunbeds, cracked walls, a thinner buffet and a room changed only after repeated complaints. The return domestic flight, booked the day before, had them leave at 3am for a 1pm flight.
In December 2025 a couple who do not eat meat found the food varied and easy for vegetarians, a coconut opened by the pool for $5 and a group of 8 eagle rays passing the jetty every day. There is no cash machine on the island: draw money at the airport.
The questions people ask before booking Hondaafushi, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Hondaafushi?
A 4-star resort, as Tripadvisor classes it, run by AAA Hotels & Resorts, the Maldivian group that also owns Filitheyo and Medhufushi. It has an island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll to itself: the official 2026 fact sheet counts 79 bungalows on 59 hectares, with more than 5 km of beach.
The official pages read say neither when it opened nor when the bungalows were last renovated. Guests in 2025 and 2026 count 55 to 60, and in September 2026 another 40 were being built on the far side of the island. The Google listing’s address is the group’s office in Malé, and its phone number is the one the group’s FAQs give for Medhufushi; Hondaafushi’s own is +960 672 0026.
All have a king-size bed, a sundeck with a daybed, a semi-open-air bathroom with an outdoor shower, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a minibar, a kettle and a safe. The pages give 2 adults per bungalow, the fact sheet up to 3 adults or 2 adults and a child. There are no water villas and no private pools, although the honeymoon offer on the website mentions villas over the water.
Where is it, and is the island quiet?
In Haa Dhaalu Atoll, at the far north of the Maldives, about 280 km north of Malé according to a group article of June 2026, and about 6 km from Hanimaadhoo airport according to Tripadvisor. The island is 500 metres across at its widest, with a beach of about 2 km according to Tripadvisor and of more than 5 km according to the official fact sheet; the Google listing gives the Malé office’s address.
It is a very quiet island: no entertainment programme, one restaurant halfway along and one bar on the tip, guests mostly adults and few children, say those who stayed in 2026. The bar and the restaurant are far apart, and there is an electric buggy to call.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the transfer cost?
By domestic flight from Velana airport to Hanimaadhoo, 50 minutes, then 10 minutes by speedboat, according to the official page; the resort asks for flight details 72 hours ahead, Booking.com 5 days ahead, and if no seat is found you spend the night in Malé at your own expense. Neither the website nor Booking.com publishes the fare: the transfer is charged separately, and in February 2026 one guest paid for the return flight on arriving at the island.
Domestic flights run only a few times a day. In 2025 and 2026 several guests describe waits of 3, 7 and 8 hours in Malé and departures from the island at 3am; others describe a well-run transfer, from Malé to the island in 5 hours. The official page also says you can arrive by seaplane, in a panel copied from Medhufushi.
Can you arrive by car or park?
No: Hondaafushi is an island reached by domestic flight and speedboat, as the official page says, and on it you get about on foot, by bicycle or by electric buggy. The Google Hotels listing includes «Parking» among its amenities, but no page of the resort mentions a car park.
How do you get into the sea?
From the beach in front of every bungalow: the official fact sheet describes direct access to the sand for all of them. The bungalow side is the swimming side, on a wide lagoon without coral; the opposite side is the snorkelling side, guests wrote in 2026.
In front of the Deluxes a September 2026 guest found the way into the water perfect, while in front of the Superiors near the bar the bottom is rocky.
Is there a house reef you can swim to?
The official page describes an extensive house reef with good visibility, and Tripadvisor names the jetty on the west side as the easiest way in. In September 2026 one guest found it still broken by a cyclone: you went in from the beach and swam out to the edge.
Near the jetty guests describe turtles, rays and sharks, and in December 2025 a couple saw a group of 8 eagle rays every day. For fish, sharks and turtles further out there are boat trips. Mask, fins and snorkel hire for $13 a day or $62 a week, according to the dive centre price list.
What are the pools like?
There is one, outdoors, on the tip of the island: the Thila Bar stands beside it and faces the beach on 3 sides, according to the dining page. The official photographs show it as an infinity pool over the sea. No bungalow has a private pool.
Guests use it little: the sea, one couple wrote in 2025, was their favourite place.
Is the pool heated, and when is it open?
The website gives neither its temperature nor its hours. The Thila Bar beside it opens daily from 10am to midnight, according to the dining page.
Where do you eat, and until when?
According to the dining page: the Main Restaurant, a pavilion with an international buffet and live cooking stations, breakfast 7.30 to 9.30am, lunch 12.30 to 2.30pm and dinner 7.30 to 9.30pm; the Thila Bar, 10am to midnight, where at lunch, one guest writes, there are sandwiches and light meals; and shisha. The all-inclusive sheet gives breakfast from 8 to 10am.
There is no room service. A romantic dinner on the beach is booked separately, and one guest recommends the lobster served in a cabana on the sand. Guests praise the fruit cut to order and the breakfast, and a couple who do not eat meat ate well in December 2025; there is only the one restaurant, a buffet.
Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?
3, according to the official fact sheet: half board, full board and all-inclusive. The all-inclusive gives the Main Restaurant buffets, afternoon tea from 4 to 6pm, water, soft drinks, juices, draught beer, house wines, selected spirits and the listed cocktails, all by the glass from 10am to midnight, and a minibar of soft drinks and water restocked once a day.
It adds 10% off the spa and 20% off excursions and, from 5 nights, a fishing trip and a snorkelling trip, which the sheet reserves for «deluxe» without saying whether it means the bungalow. After midnight every drink is charged. In August 2026 a couple wrote of 2 bottles of water a day included in the minibar.
What is the spa like?
The Hondaafushi Spa, which its menu calls VELI Spa, is on the southern tip near the Deluxes, in a garden. Before a treatment there are rain showers, a herbal steam bath and a jacuzzi, with separate wet areas for men and women, and afterwards a lounge with herbal tea; a twin suite is kept for couples. The website gives no floor area, and no page mentions a sauna.
One 2025 guest found it simple but carefully done, and worth a visit.
Is the spa included, is there a charge, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are paid for, and the spa menu prices them with the 10% service charge and 17% tax included; the all-inclusive gives 10% off. The showers, steam bath and jacuzzi go with the treatment.
No page publishes a spa day pass or access for anyone not staying on the island, which the resort has to itself and which is reached by domestic flight and speedboat.
What are the spa’s hours?
10am to 8pm daily, according to the spa page; the spa menu says 9am to 6pm. You can book before arrival or on the day, subject to availability.
The page asks you to arrive 30 minutes early and charges 50% for cancellations at less than 6 hours’ notice; the menu says 15 minutes early and 50% under 4 hours, and the full price for no-shows.
Which treatments are there, and at what prices?
From the spa menu, prices including service and tax: the Honda Fusion, 5 massage techniques in 90 minutes, at $120; a 60-minute Balinese or aromatherapy massage at $95; 90 minutes of hot stones at $135; the Maldivian sand massage at $95; a sunburn treatment at $135; facials, scrubs and hand and foot care from $55.
There is a massage for women from the second trimester, the 60-minute Earth Mother at $106, and treatments can also be given outdoors.
Can you go with children?
Yes: according to Booking.com children of all ages are welcome, from 12 they pay as adults, a cot is free and an extra bed costs $57 a night up to 11 and $100 from 12. The 2 Family Bungalows have 2 bedrooms for 4 adults and 2 children, and Superiors can be requested interconnecting.
The official pages mention no kids’ club. The dive centre runs Bubblemaker and Seal Team from 8 and a try dive from 10. A couple with a one-year-old had a perfect stay in September 2026; another guest writes that families with children are few.
What is there on the island besides the bungalows?
According to the official page and the activities page: the spa, the dive centre, the pool, an air-conditioned gym, a library, a souvenir shop, laundry, bicycles at $5 a day, beach volleyball, table tennis, billiards and darts, and the turtle unit. The water sports centre offers kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfing, water-skiing, wakeboarding and private speedboat hire.
The dive centre has 80 jackets, 50 dive computers and 3 underwater scooters; the page and the price list name SSI courses, though the same page also mentions PADI and Werner Lau, and Booking.com a partnership with Werner Lau and Diverland. A single dive costs $93, 10 dives $840. For payment on the island, the group’s FAQs list Visa, Mastercard, American Express and cash.
What offers are there?
Read on 6 October 2026, all from 5 nights: the October Package, arriving 1 to 31 October 2026, from $1,918; the Early Winter Package, 1 November to 12 December, from $2,279; the Festive Package, 13 December to 6 January 2027, from $3,620. The pages say neither whether the price is per person or per room nor which meal plan it covers.
Booking direct there are also the 7-night package until 31 October 2026, with wine, fruit, kayaks and $35 of spa credit per person, and Return Guests, 10% off room and breakfast for those who come back. The group’s FAQs say the website’s rates match those published online.
Can you get married at Hondaafushi?
Yes, the resort holds ceremonies on the beach: a group article of June 2026 describes 3 packages, Island Vow for 2, Tropical Celebration with a few guests and Luxury Romance, with a flower altar, an aisle of coconut leaves, champagne, boduberu drummers, dinner on the beach and a dedicated coordinator, with no minimum number of guests.
The website publishes no package prices and does not say whether the ceremony is legally binding; staff take the photographs, and you may bring your own photographer.
Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?
Yes, and it is compulsory for anyone staying: according to Booking.com, read on 3 October 2026, the gala dinner on 31 December 2026 costs $140 per adult and $70 per child aged 2 to 11, the one on 24 December $120 and $60, and both are already included in the room rate.
The resort’s Festive Package, 5 nights arriving between 13 December 2026 and 6 January 2027, starts at $3,620. On Google Hotels, 31 December is the dearest night of the season, at $1,945.
Can you play golf?
No: the official pages mention no golf, either on the island or among the excursions, which are fishing, snorkelling with mantas and turtles, dolphins, the Filladhoo wreck, the sandbank and island-hopping.
When is it open, and when is the best season?
All year, as far as the official pages say; they announce no closures. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 116 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price; 1 January had none, which does not mean the resort was closed.
According to the dive centre the diving is good all year, with the current stronger from January to March; the mantas are sought once a week or more. In September 2026 another 40 bungalows were under construction.
How much does a night cost?
Google Hotels, on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $389 on 14 October 2026, $261 on 24 October, $1,050 on 25 October, $570 on 10 November, $445 on 20 November, $445 on 11 December, $1,500 on 24 December, $1,945 on 31 December, $514 on 13 January 2027 and $1,664 on 24 January 2027.

The calendar shows the lowest price among sellers and names neither the bungalow nor the meal plan; for 7 October the only seller was Evendo, at $1,053, and the official site did not appear. 1 January 2027 had no price at all. The transfer is extra.
What do the reviews say?
On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.4/5 from 135 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.3/5 from 356, with a Travellers’ Choice 2026, and Booking.com 7.8/10 from 46, with staff at 7.8, location at 6.9, value at 7.0 and Wi-Fi at 6.7.
Across the 103 Google reviews with text, 80% of those discussing the location are positive, as are 79% of those discussing staff and services; on the bungalows 73% are happy. The long, near-empty beach, the calm, the bungalows’ outdoor showers and the staff recur, with waiters and bartenders often thanked by name. So do the waits in Malé between flights and, in the bungalows, furnishings that show their age; there is one restaurant, a buffet.
Which taxes and charges are added?
The official price lists for the spa and the dive centre include the 10% service charge and 17% tax; the 2024 excursion list includes tax at 16%, the rate before July 2025; it has been 17% since 1 July 2025 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026). The pages read do not mention the Green Tax. Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives include taxes and fees; Tripadvisor warns that its partners’ prices exclude tax.
The transfer, excursions, diving, treatments, beach dinners and anything outside the meal plan are extra; in the minibar a soft drink costs $3.08 and a beer $6. The gala dinners on 24 and 31 December are compulsory, and Booking.com shows them included in the rate.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in at 2pm and check-out at noon, according to the official page and Booking.com; on arrival you show ID and a credit card. Returning guests on the Return Guests offer may get check-in from 9am and check-out until 3pm, when available. With an evening flight you still leave the bungalow at noon, one 2025 guest writes.
