For families and snorkellers who want the reef outside the villa, Royal Island starts at $265 a night for 2 adults between 11 May and 8 June 2027: the lowest any seller showed on Google for one night. Anyone set on sleeping over the water should look elsewhere.

I would ask for a Sunset Beach Villa, numbers 170 to 209: 57 m² on the sunset side, with a private terrace and an open-air shower among tropical greenery, and the same comforts as a Beach Villa.
The weeks that cost less
Consider 11 to 17 May 2027: single nights for 2 adults were $265 on Google, read 12 October 2026. The dearest week, 22 to 28 December 2026, ran from $300 to $975.
What comes on top
Plan for the Green Tax of $12 per person per night. Booking.com lists the domestic flight and speedboat at $400 per adult return before 1 November 2026 and $420 per adult return on or after that date, for ages 12 and over.
Seeing the mantas
3 guests who wrote in August 2026 tell of mantas: on a paid Hanifaru Bay excursion, on dives, or on the dive centre’s trips to the reserve, a short speedboat ride away. The dive centre is open from 8am to 5pm.
What Royal Island is
Royal Island has Horubadhoo to itself, an island of 800 by 220 metres in Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It belongs to Villa Resorts, the Maldivian company that has also run Villa Nautica and Villa Park since 1986. The villas follow the whole shoreline with the jungle behind them: the official site counts 152, the villa pages number them from 101 to 250, which makes 150, and Tripadvisor lists 150.
People come for the sea and the table. Across the 500 most recent Google reviews, 89% of guests who mention the location or the staff are positive: blacktip sharks, rays and turtles off the villas, a buffet with a different theme every night, and a host assigned to each guest. From June to November manta rays and whale sharks gather in Hanifaru Bay, 25 minutes away by boat.
The bill grows beyond the room rate. The domestic flight and speedboat cost $400 per adult return, $420 from 1 November 2026, according to Booking.com; the spa and any drinks outside your plan carry a 10% service charge and 17% GST; and the gala dinners on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are compulsory. Guests who are happy with the bill point to a villa rate that is low for the Maldives.
In the Lumina Guide
Lumina Guide 2027
Royal Island is a green Baa Atoll island of 152 villas, all on the beach: the reef starts a few metres off the sand and, from June to November, the manta rays of Hanifaru Bay are 25 minutes away by boat.
Among the hotel’s regulars, a guest on a second stay, who wrote in April 2025, found the resort improved in every aspect, with staff always smiling and present everywhere. A guest on a return stay, writing in August 2021, found the house reef in far better state than 3 years earlier, with many more corals growing. A guest on a second stay, who wrote in February 2026, calls the availability of the manager and his staff perfect. A guest on a fifth stay, writing in February 2025, calls it a wonderful refuge among superb nature.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 28 September 2021 to 3 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Baa Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
Price: for two on the night of 11 May 2027, from $265 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
What a night costs, season by season
A night for 2 adults runs from $370 to $494 between 8 January and 5 April 2027, from $265 to $320 between 6 April and 8 June and from $302 to $420 from 9 June to 5 September, against $2,075 for the dearest night shown, 31 December 2026. I would aim for 11 May to 8 June 2027, when 29 nights in a row are priced from $265 to $278.

What to expect
A buffet that changes country every night, a spa hidden in the jungle, the atoll’s sandbanks and a club for small children.
Maakanaa, on the beach, serves a buffet breakfast from 7.30 to 10am, lunch from 12.30 to 2pm and dinner from 7 to 9pm, with a different theme each evening. Raabondhi, on the south side, grills fish and lobster over coals from 11am to 11pm.
Pavilions among fountains and planting in the middle of the island, with couples’ suites, open from 10am to 8pm. The menu sets classic massages beside Ayurvedic therapies, from shirodhara to abhyanga.
Excursions head out to sandbanks and to the atoll’s turtles and dolphins. From June to November diveOceanus takes guests to Hanifaru Bay, 25 minutes by boat, to swim with mantas; from December to May it looks for them in Raa Atoll instead.
An indoor playroom and shaded corners, open from 10am to 10pm, with coconut-leaf weaving, shell craft, origami, stories and short island walks. A children’s pool sits beside the main one.

The sea erodes some stretches of the beach, which are shored up with sandbags, and between 2020 and 2026 several guests describe villas with little sand in front: ask for the villa number. Source: 500 Google reviews read, 28 September 2021 to 3 October 2026
From Malé you fly 20 minutes to Dharavandhoo and carry on by speedboat: $400 per adult return, $420 from 1 November 2026, half for children aged 2 to 11, according to Booking.com, paid to the resort. Land in Malé after 5pm and you will not reach the island the same day.
Every villa is on the beach; none stands over the water. The side matters: the east gets the sunrise, the west the sunset, and guests in May 2026 found the north the most sheltered from the wind in the rainy season.
On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the gala dinner is compulsory: $260 and $350 per adult, $130 and $175 per child under 12, paid before arrival, according to Booking.com.
The spa menu adds a 10% service charge and 17% GST, while the excursion and diving menus already include them. Green Tax is $12 per person per night, according to the official offers page.
There are mosquitoes on the island, in the open-air bathrooms too: 7 Google reviews mention them in 2025, and more than one advises bringing repellent.
Between November 2025 and August 2026, 6 Google reviews describe villa furnishings and bathrooms that show their age.

Royal Island Resort & Spa reviews
The platforms’ scores, read on 3 and 6 October 2026, and what guests say about the reef, the villas and the bill.
On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.7/5 from 1,657 ratings. The figures by theme come from the 500 most recent reviews with text, from September 2021 to October 2026, in many languages, and many thank a member of staff by name. These are accounts of stays we have not verified.
6 stays described on Google between May 2025 and May 2026.
Google
The north side in the rainy season
In May 2026 a couple who stayed 3 weeks snorkelled mostly on the north side, where the water stayed calm while the south caught the wind, among blacktip sharks, rays and turtles. They recommend villas 217 to 221, screened by planting, and note that the rooms are being refurbished.
In October 2025 a guest warned that on arrival the 20-minute domestic flight can mean a wait of a couple of hours, then 10 minutes by boat. Going home with a 9 or 10am flight from Malé, you leave the island at 4.30. A walk round the island with your feet in the water takes 30 to 35 minutes.
The same guest explains that full board covers 3 meals with water, plus tea, coffee and juice at breakfast; everything else is charged with 10% service and 17% tax, so a Diet Coke and a beer came to $18.80. All-inclusive adds snorkelling gear and one dinner at Raabondhi.
In November 2025 a couple found their villa well equipped but showing its age, the bathroom bare, the hot dishes lukewarm and little fish on the buffet. On the other hand they saw sharks every day in the shallows, and advise swapping at least one dinner for Raabondhi.
In September 2025 a family with one-year-old triplets went on the dolphin safari and the turtle trip out to a sandbank, taking the boys on every boat. What they remember of the spa is its ponds, gardens and waterfalls.
In May 2025 a guest rated the resort good but well short of 5 stars: $7 for a Coke, $10 for an ice cream, about $250 for an hour on a jet ski, and 26% on top of everything. They advise against all-inclusive and warn that a few villas have no beach in front.
The questions people ask before booking Royal Island, answered from sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Royal Island?
A 5-star resort, as Google Hotels and Villa Resorts class it, on Horubadhoo, a Baa Atoll island with nothing else on it. The Villa Resorts page lists it among the group’s 5 island resorts, Maldivian-owned and locally run since 1986; the official site calls it an all-inclusive beachfront resort.
The site gives no opening year, and the oldest Google reviews date from 2012. It has 152 beachfront villas, according to the About page of the official site, read on 15 October 2026.
Which villas can you book, and how big are they?
5 types, all on the beach, according to the accommodation page: Beach Villas and Sunset Beach Villas of 57 m² for 2 adults and a child, 10 Beach Pool Villas of 125 m² with a private pool, 2-bedroom Family Beach Villas of 114 m², and 2 2-bedroom Beach Pool Residences of 257 m² with a pool and whirlpool, for 4 adults and 2 children.
All have an open-air shower, minibar, safe, kettle for tea and coffee and 24-hour room service. There are no overwater villas. The site calls its sizes approximate and does not say whether they include the terrace.
Where is it, and is the island quiet?
On Horubadhoo in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve north-west of Malé: a 20-minute flight to Dharavandhoo, which Tripadvisor puts 5.3 miles away, then the speedboat. The island measures 800 by 220 metres and holds only the resort.
It is green and sociable rather than hushed: live music at Boli Bar, DJs and bands at the Fun Pub from 9pm, and plenty of families with children. For quiet, choose villas away from the centre, such as the 2 residences at either end.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the transfer cost?
By a 20-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a speedboat, according to the official page, which gives 10 minutes by boat, while the contact page says 20. According to Booking.com, the resort charges $400 per adult return until 31 October 2026 and $420 from 1 November, half for ages 2 to 11 and nothing under 2; a private seaplane costs $6,500 each way, for up to 12 passengers.
To arrive the same day you need to land in Malé by 5pm, and names and flights must reach the resort 96 hours ahead. Guests in 2025 describe waits of a couple of hours for the domestic flight and pre-dawn starts for morning flights; one, in October 2025, paid $440 a person. With the winter offer, on stays of 7 nights or more, the resort pays for one of the 2 legs.
Can you drive there or park?
No: Royal Island is an island without roads, reached only by plane and speedboat or by private seaplane, and no source describes any parking. Cars stay in Malé; on the island you walk, and one guest reckons 30 to 35 minutes to go right round it with your feet in the water, as they wrote on Google.
How do you get into the sea?
Straight from your villa: every type has beach access, according to the official villa pages, and the sand runs down into warm, shallow water, as the resort puts it. Beach Pool Villas come with their own slice of beach.
The sea erodes some stretches of the beach, which are shored up with sandbags and low walls, and between 2020 and 2026 several guests describe villas with little sand in front: ask for the villa number first. In the rainy season the north side is the calmest, a couple wrote in May 2026.
Is there a house reef you can swim to?
Yes. The diveOceanus price list for 2026 offers house reef dives at $71, and beginners’ first open-water dive takes place there, no deeper than 12 metres. Guests in 2025 and 2026 describe it a few metres off the beach, round much of the island, with blacktip sharks, rays, turtles and moray eels.
4 Google reviews between 2018 and 2025 say that the coral has bleached and that the fish are still plentiful. Snorkelling gear is included for all-inclusive guests; others hire it or bring their own.
What pools are there?
One large pool with a separate children’s pool, according to the facilities page, with the Pool Bar in the middle, where you sit in the water from 10am to 6pm. Then the private pools: in the 10 Beach Pool Villas and the 2 residences, which also have a whirlpool.
The site gives no dimensions for the main pool; the official photographs show it beside the beach, among the palms.
Is the pool heated, and when is it open?
No source read gives a temperature, heating or opening hours for the main pool; the Pool Bar is open from 10am to 6pm. The villa pools have no set hours.
Where do you eat, and until when?
According to the dining page: Maakanaa, a buffet, serves breakfast from 7.30 to 10am, lunch from 12.30 to 2pm and dinner from 7 to 9pm; Raabondhi, à la carte, with grilled fish, lobster and meat, is open from 11am to 11pm. Boli Bar is open round the clock, the Pool Bar from 10am to 6pm and the Fun Pub from 9pm until late.
Guests describe a different theme at the buffet each night, a salad counter and a pasta station. The private dining menu runs from a table on the beach to a floating breakfast in your pool. Neither restaurant is underwater: both stand on the beach. Booking.com counts 4 bars, the official site 3.
Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?
On Google Hotels, for 7 October 2026, the official site sold full board at $376 and «Premium All Inclusive» at $663 for 2; the winter offer also names All Inclusive, and the FAQs let you upgrade to all-inclusive on the island, at a higher price than booking it in advance.
The site does not publish what each plan covers. According to guests, full board gives 3 buffet meals with water, plus tea, coffee and juice at breakfast; all-inclusive adds drinks at the bars, with some time limits, snorkelling gear, the sunset fishing trip and a dinner at Raabondhi, which one 2026 guest received only for staying 7 nights. A guest on Premium in July 2025 says they spent nothing on the island while trying the spa, restaurants and bar.
What is the spa like?
Araamu Spa sits in a tropical garden in the middle of the island, with pavilions for classic and Ayurvedic treatments, according to the spa page; the romantic-getaways page mentions couples’ suites and a steam room. The site gives no floor area.
The spa menu of April 2024 lists jacuzzi, sauna and steam bath as its wet facilities, booked for 60 minutes, alongside herbal and flower baths; the changing area provides a robe, slippers and a locker.
Is the spa included, is it extra, and can outside guests use it?
It is extra: jacuzzi, sauna and steam bath cost $39 per person for 60 minutes, $62 for a couple, plus a 10% service charge and 17% GST, according to the menu, which gives all-inclusive guests a discount on selected treatments. No official page publishes a day pass for people not staying on Royal Island, an island that holds only the resort.
What are the spa’s opening hours?
From 10am to 8pm: the official page has the last treatment beginning at 7pm, the menu has it ending at 8pm, and treatments outside those hours can be booked with 24 hours’ notice, at a possible extra charge. The menu advises booking a day ahead and arriving 15 minutes early, and charges 75% for cancellations with less than 3 hours’ notice.
Which treatments are offered, and at what prices?
From the menu of April 2024, plus 10% service and 17% GST: the Back to Roots signature ritual of 100 minutes at $152, or $304 for 2; the Loabi Loabi couples’ massage of 90 minutes at $296; the Voyager and Araamu Immersion massages at $125 for 60 minutes and $164 for 90; a 90-minute shirodhara at $164; and a 30-minute head massage at $70.
There are also facials of 50 to 75 minutes from $86 to $109, a prenatal massage at $125, treatments for children aged 4 to 10 from $47 for 30 minutes, a manicure at $70 and a pedicure at $93. Booking 10 treatments together saves 25%.
Is it good for children?
Yes, and many families go. The FAQs let one child under 12 stay free in your room and charge children’s breakfast at half the adult rate; the families offer, when you book on the site, extends that to 2 children under 12 who stay and eat free, with an extra bed. Booking.com says there are no extra beds, that cots up to age 2 are free and that from 12 children pay as adults.
The Starfish Kids Club is open from 10am to 10pm for younger children, with no published age range; there is a children’s pool, and diveOceanus lets 8- and 9-year-olds try scuba and certifies from 10. The family page also promises access to «Park Players», but that is the kids’ club at Villa Park, another of the group’s islands. The resort is not adults-only.
What is there on the island besides the villas?
According to the facilities page: 2 restaurants and 3 bars, the spa, a gym, the pool with its children’s pool, a 24-hour reception, a clinic with a resident doctor round the clock, the diveOceanus dive centre, and floodlit tennis courts, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton and futsal.
Water sports, from 9am to 6pm, range from windsurfing to jet skis and parasailing. The FAQs promise free Wi-Fi in the villas and public areas, which Booking.com guests score 8.3, and UK 3-pin sockets. Pets are not allowed, according to Booking.com.
What offers are there, and is it worth booking direct?
On the offers page, read on 7 October 2026: up to 20% off stays from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 booked by 31 October, except 24 December to 10 January; up to 35% off for 10 nights or more; and up to 25% off when you book 180 days ahead. From 7 nights the winter offer also includes one leg of the transfer.
The site promises its best rate, taxes included, and matches a lower price found within 24 hours with a further 10% off. For 7 October, though, Priceline, Agoda and Booking.com were selling the Beach Villa on Google Hotels at $299, $301 and $423, without naming a meal plan, while the official site asked $376 with full board.
Can you get married at Royal Island?
Yes: the weddings page offers 2 packages. «Sunset Bliss» takes the couple to a sandbank, with a beauty ritual at the spa, a procession with drums, vows at sunset, champagne and cake, a candlelit dinner and a photographer; «Royal Romance» is held on the beach, with cake and photographs.
The site publishes no prices or capacities, and you ask for a quote through its form. For anniversaries the resort gives a bottle of sparkling wine and a cake to couples who show their marriage certificate.
Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?
Yes, and it is compulsory: Booking.com lists it at $350 per adult and $175 per child under 12, and Christmas Eve at $260 and $130, free under 2, paid before arrival. The official festive page describes a countdown on the beach, white-theme parties and bodu beru drums, without a menu or prices.
On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, the nights from 27 December to 7 January had no price, which does not mean the resort was closed.
Can you play golf?
No: no official page mentions golf. On the island you can play tennis, in the evening too on the floodlit courts, badminton, futsal and table tennis, according to the land sports page.
When is it open, and when is the best time to go?
All year, as far as the official pages say, and they announce no closures. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 102 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price; 11 to 13 November and 27 December to 7 January did not, which does not mean the resort was closed.
The FAQs name November to April as the best months, dry and with the clearest water. For Hanifaru Bay’s mantas, summer is the time: June to November, according to the diving page.
How much does a night cost?
Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $293 on 7 October 2026, $1,503 on 19 October, $291 on 27 October, $325 on 10 November, $1,666 on 16 November, $339 on 15 December, $976 on 24 December and $385 on 15 January 2027.
Of the 117 nights read, 102 had a price, from $291 to $1,666; the peaks fell on 19 and 20 October and from 14 to 18 November, and the calendar names neither the villa nor the meal plan. For 7 October the official site asked $376 with full board. From 11 to 13 November and from 27 December to 7 January there was no price at all. The transfer is extra.
What do the reviews say?
Google’s average on 6 October 2026 was 4.7/5 from 1,657 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.7/5 from 4,459, the only hotel in its Horubadhoo ranking, and Booking.com 9.4/10 from 1,483, with staff at 9.8, cleanliness at 9.5, value at 9.3 and Wi-Fi at 8.3.
Across the 500 most recent Google reviews, 89% of those who mention the staff or the location are positive, and 77% of those who mention the villas. The transfer, drinks outside the meal plan and excursions come on top of the room rate.
Which taxes and charges are added?
The prices on the spa menu carry a 10% service charge and 17% GST on top; the excursion and diving menus already include them. Green Tax is $12 per person per night, according to the offer terms, children included from age 2 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026).
Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives include the taxes: for 7 October the official site’s booking link showed $376.11, of which $102.52 was tax, which matches a room rate of $273.59 with 10% and 17% on top plus $12 of Green Tax each. The transfer, the Christmas and New Year galas, the spa, excursions and drinks outside your plan remain extra.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to the FAQs, which do not guarantee a villa ready earlier and offer a rate for late check-out. Offers booked on the site include early check-in and late check-out free, subject to availability; on arrival you show ID and the card used for the booking, according to Booking.com.
