Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives, 100 all-inclusive villas on Bodufinolhu, in South Ari Atoll, a 30-minute seaplane flight from Malé
With reopening set for 1 March 2027, this is for couples who want whale-shark excursions alongside time in a Balinese-inspired spa. For a break before then, choose an island that is already welcoming guests.

Meliá Whale Lagoon has Bodufinolhu to itself, an island in South Ari Atoll 107 km from Malé airport: 100 villas on the beach or over the water, 2 infinity pools, 2 restaurants, 2 bars and a Mandara Spa. It used to be Barceló Whale Lagoon; Meliá Hotels International reopened it under its own name in January 2026, closed it for renovation on 16 August and has set the reopening for 1 March 2027.
People come for the open water of the marine protected area, known for whale sharks and manta rays all year, and for an all-inclusive stay with nothing to think about. The 28 Google reviews with text written since January 2026 praise the location, all 14 that mention it, the clean, roomy villas and the dive centre; a honeymoon account on wheretogoin.net walked round the whole island in a quarter of an hour.
The seaplane, the Green Tax of $12 per person per night and the taxes are all extra; the house reef, by the same account, is reached by boat, and the lagoon around the island is shallow. Anyone who wants a reef to swim to from the villa will be happier on another island; those after an all-inclusive and boat trips out to the whale sharks can book from 1 March 2027, when the resort reopens after the works.

Lumina Guide 2027
Meliá Whale Lagoon is a small South Ari island beside the marine protected area where whale sharks and mantas are seen all year: 100 all-inclusive villas on the beach or over the water, reopening on 1 March 2027.
Sea Salt, under a tall timber roof, is the all-day buffet restaurant, with tables on the sand too and cooking that changes theme every evening, from Asian to paella. Lunch can also be taken at Breeze, by the pool, or at Magical, on the beach; Aqua is the à la carte seafood restaurant, in the evening.
6 rooms for Balinese-style treatments, pavilions for couples' massages, a sauna and a steam room, and a private outdoor Jacuzzi for 2 at extra cost. Rates on the official site include a $50 voucher to spend on treatments.
The island borders the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks and manta rays are seen all year. Trips go out with the dive centre, which runs PADI courses for every level and a paid whale shark swim; in July 2026 one couple found the team searching for the animals with a drone.
An infinity pool that merges with the sea, beside Breeze, and the Lagoon Pool near Magical, both with loungers and Bali beds. A honeymooning couple on wheretogoin.net nearly always had them to themselves.

Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives reviews
The platforms' scores, read on 3 and 7 October 2026, and what guests say about the reef, the villas and the service.
On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.2/5 from 30 ratings: 78% five stars. The figures by topic come from the 28 reviews with text written since January 2026, when the resort became a Meliá; the low scores of September are about the closure, and none describes a stay. Tripadvisor also counts the Barceló years. These are guests’ accounts we have not verified.
From the resort’s Google listing, May to September 2026: the reef every morning, the sunrise and sunset sides, the dive centre and a honeymoon.
Google
The reef every morning
In July 2026 an Australian honeymoon couple in a water villa found the reef healthy, with fish, turtles and tiny blacktip sharks, and started each day there. They never saw a whale shark, but the day spent searching was the best of the trip; the wife, a coeliac, ate safely throughout.
In April 2026, with the resort far from full, a couple found the sunrise-side water warmer and stiller, less inviting; on the sunset side the moving sea stays clear and the coral is lovelier. Diving and water sports, they felt, were expensive.
A couple in July 2026 wanted to see whale sharks and manta rays, and the dive centre hunted for them with a drone as well. The resort itself gets 4 stars: too soft a mattress, worn toilet seats, unanswered emails.
In June 2026 a honeymoon couple on an 8-day stay praise the villas, cleaned twice a day, and the reef trip. They also describe constant upselling: $100 to dress the beach dinner, and pressing offers of the better wine at the table.
A couple who arrived on 23 March 2026 fell ill on day 2, as did guests in neighbouring villas, which the island's doctor acknowledged. The morning and afternoon tea in their package was not on offer, and their complaint to Meliá was still open in May.
A Spanish couple had planned their wedding on the island with 12 guests for September 2026. With 2 weeks to go, they learned of the closure for renovation, and Meliá offered another hotel without the all-inclusive plan they had paid for.
What people ask before booking Meliá Whale Lagoon, answered from the sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives?
A 5-star, all-inclusive resort of Meliá Hotels & Resorts, the Spanish group's flagship brand, with 100 villas on the island of Bodufinolhu in South Ari Atoll. Meliá’s release of 15 January 2026 announced its opening that month, the group's first in the Maldives, with 2 infinity pools, 4 restaurants and bars, and a spa with a sauna and a steam room.
It was previously Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, as the account on wheretogoin.net and a Korean couple on Google recall, and Tripadvisor keeps the reviews of those years. Since 16 August 2026 it has been closed for a renovation, and the official booking engine reopens it on 1 March 2027.
Which villas can you choose from, and how big are they?
The rooms page lists 5 types. On the beach: Sunrise Beach Villas on the sunrise side and Sunset Beach Villas on the sunset side, 840 sq ft, or 78 m², with a double or twin beds. Over the water: Sunrise and Sunset Water Villas, 915 sq ft, 85 m², with a king or twin beds and steps into the ocean. Then the Sunset Suite Villa with Pool, 1,227 sq ft, 114 m², with a private pool and a king bed.
The site does not say how many villas there are of each type or how many people each sleeps; Blue Bay Travel gives 4 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children, for every villa. A guest in September 2026 counts 8 pool suites. On 7 October 2026 the official engine was selling 3 types for March, April and May 2027: the Sunrise Beach Villa, the Sunrise Water Villa and the suite.
Where is it, and is the island quiet?
On Bodufinolhu, in South Ari Atoll, 107 km from Velana airport in Malé, 15 km from Dhigurah and 20 km from Dhangethi, according to the official page, beside the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Google Maps adds Fenfushi, the nearby local island, to the address, and Tripadvisor wrongly files it under Kaafu, Malé's atoll.
It is quiet: a guest in March 2026 reckoned fewer than 20% of the beach villas were taken, and wheretogoin.net describes corners for reading for hours with nobody about, above all at Magical, by the water-sports centre. Some evenings a DJ plays at the sunset bar.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?
By Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane, 30 minutes from Velana airport, arranged by the resort and charged extra, according to the official page. The booking engine's conditions have it flying in daylight only, for arrivals between 06:00 and 15:30 and departures from 09:00, with 20 kg in the hold and 5 kg hand luggage, flight details 7 days ahead and a 60% charge for cancelling within 72 hours.
The site publishes no fare. Expedia, in the listing a search engine showed on 7 October 2026, gives $552 per person; the couple on wheretogoin.net paid $445 per adult and $300 per child, rates in force from August 2025. In Malé a resort host meets guests and takes them to the seaplane lounge, where the wait can run to 2 hours.
Can you arrive by car or park?
No: Bodufinolhu is an island reached only by seaplane, with no roads and no parking. Parking appears among Booking.com's guest questions, but no source describes a space, and on the island you get about on foot or by buggy.
How do you get into the sea?
From the beach, which runs right round the island, and from the decks of the water villas, which according to the Sunrise Water Villa page step straight into the sea. The lagoon is shallow, though: the writers of wheretogoin.net waded a long way before they could swim, and found it deepened sooner on the sunrise side.
A couple in April 2026 found the sunset side clearer instead, with lovelier coral.
Is there a house reef you can swim to?
The official site, read on 15 October 2026, does not say whether the house reef can be reached by swimming. By the account on wheretogoin.net the house reef is reached by boat, with one trip included and the rest paid, and near the shore the writers saw mostly baby sharks and tropical fish, no turtles. An Australian couple in a water villa in July 2026 snorkelled every morning among turtles and blacktip sharks, and a honeymoon couple in June saw a turtle from their water villa.
Snorkelling gear is lent free for the whole stay, as the official page says. For whale sharks and manta rays you go out with the dive centre into the South Ari Marine Protected Area.
What are the pools like?
2 infinity pools, according to the official page: one that merges with the sea, beside Breeze, and the quieter Lagoon Pool by Magical, both with loungers and Bali beds. The Sunset Suite Villa with Pool has its own private pool; the other villas list none.
The site gives no sizes. A September 2026 review on Tripadvisor describes them as nearly always empty.
Is the pool heated, and when is it open?
No official source gives opening hours or any heating. Until 1 March 2027 the resort, pools included, is closed.
Where do you eat, and until when?
According to the restaurants page: Sea Salt, an international buffet all day with sea views; Aqua, an à la carte Mediterranean seafood restaurant in the evening, with an elegant dress code; Breeze, a bar with Mediterranean food by the pool; Magical, a beach bar with light meals. The pages read give no hours; Luxury Escapes has breakfast from 07:00 to 10:00.
The account on wheretogoin.net describes a themed buffet for each evening, from Asian and Indian to paella, live stations cooking meat and tuna to order, and lunches at the bars until 17:00. A couple in July 2026 ate gluten-free without trouble, having told the kitchen in advance.
Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?
The official engine sells 2 plans, All inclusive and Premium All Inclusive. According to Blue Bay Travel, the first covers breakfast, lunch and dinner at Sea Salt, or a 2-course lunch at Breeze or Magical, tea and snacks from 10:30 to 16:30, selected alcoholic and soft drinks at every bar and a minibar restocked daily; stays of more than 5 nights add one set-menu dinner at Aqua.
The Premium plan adds a longer drinks list, with better spirits and cocktails, and 30% off at Aqua from the second visit. Left out, according to Islandii, are further dinners at Aqua, premium alcohol, diving, whale shark and manta trips, the spa and the seaplane; wheretogoin.net adds that wine comes by the glass, with no choice of label.
What is the spa like?
It is a Balinese-inspired Mandara Spa with 6 treatment rooms, separate pavilions for couples' massages, a sauna, a steam room and beauty spaces, according to the spa page; a private outdoor Jacuzzi for 2 can be booked at extra cost. The site gives no floor area.
Wheretogoin.net recalls the ginger tea on arrival and the garden walk to the rooms; sunrise yoga and Pilates take place in the pavilion on the lawn.
Is the spa included, does it cost extra, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are paid: the official page marks them as extra, and rates on the site include a $50 voucher to spend at the spa. Islandii says all-inclusive guests get 15% off. No source publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island, which holds only the resort and is reached by seaplane.
What are the spa's hours?
The official pages publish no hours for the spa or the pools, and the resort is closed until 1 March 2027. Treatments are booked on the island; among the extras the booking engine offers for the day of arrival is a Balinese massage.
Which treatments does it offer, and at what prices?
According to the spa page: massages in the Balinese tradition, a couples' massage, facials with a cold crystal roller, treatments tailored for intensity, aromas and focus, and sauna and steam rituals. The site publishes no price list; the official rates include the $50 spa voucher.
The writers of wheretogoin.net and a couple in April 2026 both went back a second time for the Balinese massage.
Can you go with children?
Yes. The official page lists activities for children, Meliá's release an entertainment programme for all ages and Google Hotels a kids' club, with no ages given. Booking.com says children are welcome, that from 3 they are charged as adults and that a cot is free up to 2, while the same page says cots and extra beds are not available.
Booking.com asks for check-in at 18 or over. Blue Bay Travel gives 2 adults and 2 children at most per villa, and children from 2 to 11 have their own seaplane fare. A family spent 6 nights on the island in January 2026 and writes warmly about it.
What is there on the island besides the villas?
According to the official page: 2 restaurants and 2 bars, 2 infinity pools, the Mandara Spa, an open-air gym, a PADI dive centre and a water-sports park with paddleboards, kayaks, jet skis, windsurfing and inflatables. Yoga and Pilates are held at sunrise.
A couple in April 2026 describe an open-air cinema, a games room with billiards, chess and a games console, and coral restoration projects; Booking.com also lists cooking classes and live music. Booking.com does not allow pets.
What offers are there?
Rates on Meliá’s site, read on 7 October 2026, include the $50 spa voucher and free snorkelling gear, and MeliáRewards members, which is free to join, pay 15% less; for May 2027 there is also a flexible rate, dearer than the prepaid one.
For honeymoons, within 12 months of the wedding and with the certificate sent ahead, the couple on wheretogoin.net received sparkling wine, 2 dinners at Aqua, a decorated bed and a spa credit, and expects the offers to change after the renovation.
Can you get married at Meliá Whale Lagoon?
Yes: the official page offers, under Love Stories by Meliá, beach weddings, sunset proposals and honeymoons, and the gallery shows a flowered bamboo arch on the sand. The site publishes no packages, capacities or prices.
Nothing takes place before 1 March 2027: a Spanish couple who had planned their wedding with 12 guests for September 2026 learned of the closure 2 weeks ahead.
Is there a New Year's Eve dinner?
Not on 31 December 2026: the resort is closed until 1 March 2027, and the official engine reports no availability for 15 December. No source publishes a New Year's Eve programme at Meliá Whale Lagoon.
Can you play golf?
No: no official page mentions golf. The island's activities are diving, snorkelling, water sports, whale shark trips and outings to the neighbouring islands.
When is it open, and when is the best season?
It is closed for now. The official page announces a temporary closure and a reopening in 2027, and the booking engine's calendar opens dates from 1 March 2027; wheretogoin.net dates the closure to 16 August 2026. Guests booked for September say they were told about 2 weeks ahead, one booked for October a month ahead, on Tripadvisor.
Meliá's release gives whale sharks and manta rays all year in the marine protected area. The site names no best season.
How much does a night cost?
On Meliá’s site, read on 7 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night in the Sunrise Beach Villa, all-inclusive, taxes excluded: $697 on 1 March 2027, the reopening night, and the same on 10 March, 24 March, 14 April and 28 April; $792 on 12 May and 9 June. Nothing is sold before the reopening: for 10 November and 15 December 2026 the engine reports no availability, and Google Hotels, on 6 October, had no price for any of the 117 nights to 31 January 2027. Premium All Inclusive costs about $87 more a night, MeliáRewards members pay 15% less, and Trip.com was asking more than double. The seaplane is extra.
What do the reviews say?
On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.2/5 from 30 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.8/5 from 761, with a Travellers’ Choice 2026, and Booking.com 9.1/10 from 37, with cleanliness at 9.8 and location at 9.7; on 7 October Trip.com gave 9.8/10 from 50.
