Embudu Village, an island resort open since 1979, its house reef a few metres off the beach, in South Malé Atoll, 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport
Embudu suits couples and families content with simple rooms and days outdoors, with nights from $314, the lowest seller price Google showed for 2 adults. If a detached villa matters more than a modest bungalow, choose a different kind of island.

I would ask for a Superior Beach Bungalow: 42 m² with a private patio opening onto the beach, for a stay that moves easily between the room and the sand.
December before the holidays
For 12–18 December 2026, the single-night prices run from $314 to $321 in the calendar read on 12 October 2026. The dearest night shown is 31 December, at $999.
Budget for the boat
Allow for the speedboat return: $95 per adult until 31 October 2026, rising to $98 from 1 November 2026. The child fares are $47.50 and $49 respectively.
Breakfast before 9.15am
Make breakfast an early appointment at the Main Restaurant: its buffet runs from 7am to 9.15am, leaving the rest of the morning free once you have eaten.
What Embudu is
Embudu Village has a small island on the northern rim of South Malé Atoll to itself, 20 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport. It opened in 1979 as the first resort of the Maldivian group Kaimoo and marked 47 years on 31 January 2026. Google Hotels and Tripadvisor class it as 3-star; the official fact sheet of 2023 counts 102 bungalows among the palms and 16 water villas.
People come for the sea. The house reef starts 10 to 20 metres from the shore, drops to 30 metres and is home to blacktip reef sharks, turtles and rays; Diverland, the dive centre on the island since 1986, runs boats to 40 sites, Embudu Express among them. Of the 298 Google reviews that mention the location, 89% speak well of it.
For the rest it is a 3-star, and presents itself as one. The rooms are basic, many bungalows are semi-detached and you hear the room next door, there is no pool, and stretches of the beach, which the sea is eroding, are shored up with sandbags. The buffet, though, pleases nearly everyone and the staff even more: 87% of the 361 reviews that discuss them are positive.

What makes it rare
A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

The scores come from 464 Google reviews with text, left from 14 May 2013 to 29 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in South Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

Embudu, Bandos or Malahini Kuda Bandos
Choose Embudu for simple bungalows, or Bandos for a larger island with a pool and more restaurants. Malahini Kuda Bandos is another small-island choice for a few nights of beach close to the airport.
The main restaurant serves buffets for breakfast from 7:00 to 9:15am, lunch from 12:30 to 2pm and dinner from 7:30 to 9pm, with themed nights from Italian to seafood. The bar by the sea opens from 9am to midnight, the coffee shop from 4 to 6pm.
The resort’s blog suggests 2 ways in: the south side, sheltered and calm, and the jetty by the water villas, nearer the channels where the larger animals pass. A review from May 2026 describes 300 metres of living coral on the south side, the Coral Garden.
The dive centre has been on the island since 1986 and teaches to SSI standards. A dive costs $89, 10 cost $799, the Open Water course $850 and a first try for beginners $155, service and tax included; manta rays are most likely between August and November.
Part of a group with spas across the Indian Ocean, it offers Ayurvedic and Balinese massage, scrubs, wraps, facials and packages such as the 105-minute Diver’s Recovery. The menu on the website lists durations but no prices.
Good to know before you book
Embudu has no swimming pool: none appears among the official facilities or on the resort map, and guests confirm it up to September 2026. Google Hotels lists one among its amenities, and is wrong.
Many bungalows are semi-detached, 2 rooms under one roof, and between August 2025 and February 2026, 6 Google reviews say you hear the room next door.
The sea is eating into parts of the beach: between June 2025 and March 2026, 6 Google reviews describe stretches shored up with sandbags and rock barriers.
The speedboat is extra: $95 per adult until 31 October 2026, then $98. Drinks, snacks, diving and excursions are charged too, with the 10% service charge and GST included in the menus’ prices.
The main restaurant serves its buffets at set hours: breakfast from 7:00 to 9:15am, lunch from 12:30 to 2pm, dinner from 7:30 to 9pm.
The resort has been open since 1979. Between December 2023 and February 2026, 12 Google reviews describe bungalows, furniture and bathrooms that have some years on them; in May 2026 a guest writes that the bathrooms are being redone one by one.

Embudu Village reviews
The platforms’ scores, read on 3 and 6 October 2026, and what guests say about the reef, the rooms and the food.
On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.6/5 from 584 ratings, 80% of them 5 stars. The figures by theme come from the 464 reviews with text written from 2013 to September 2026, in many languages; many guests have been coming back for years. These are accounts of stays we have not checked.

The Coral Garden to the south
In May 2026 a pair of keen snorkellers found 300 metres of living coral on the south side, the most varied they had seen in the Maldives, though it faces the wind and can be hard to swim to. By the main jetty the reef is in worse shape, but that is where the sharks, morays, octopus and turtles are.
In August 2026 a guest back after 20 years found the same island: people heading off to dive after breakfast, others spending all day on the reef, and staff who are relaxed and natural. For him the sea is enough.
In October 2025 a couple ate as well as in a 4-star hotel and found the island tended every day by the gardeners. In their bungalow, though, they heard everything the neighbours did, which had never happened to them before.
At the end of February 2026 a family of 7 stayed in the water villas, which they recommend for the thrill of the sea beneath your feet, and found the 3 daily buffets a match for the whole group.
In November 2025, after 2 weeks, a guest describes room 28 facing bushes and sandbags where the beach should have been, and a couple of minutes’ walk to the sea. Loungers were never a problem.
In November 2025 a couple saw fish, reef sharks and turtles on the reef, and lizards, crabs and parrots on the island. There was no TV in the room and no pool: after a 5-star resort, they write, their best memories are of Embudu.
The questions people ask before booking Embudu, answered from sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Embudu Village?
A 3-star resort, as Google Hotels and Tripadvisor class it, on an island in South Malé Atoll with only the resort on it. According to the official blog it opened in 1979 as Kaimoo’s first resort, and it marked 47 years on 31 January 2026; the 2023 fact sheet counts 102 bungalows and 16 water villas.
The resort sells itself as a traditional island on a budget, with no luxury price tag. Its awards page shows a Travelife Gold certificate from 2025 and HolidayCheck awards, and Tripadvisor gave it a Travelers’ Choice for 2026.
What rooms are there, and how big are they?
2 types, according to the accommodation page: beach bungalows of 42 m² among the palms, with a patio onto the sand, and water villas of 47 m² on the island’s edge, with a balcony and a glass panel in the floor for watching fish. Both sleep 3 adults, or 2 adults and a child, with a double bed, air conditioning, a safe, a hair dryer and an iron.
Guests describe clean, roomy rooms, no TV in the bungalows, and in the semi-detached ones they say you hear the room next door. A guest in May 2026 says the bathrooms are being redone one by one. Rooms 106 and 107 share a connecting door, a family wrote in 2025.
Where is it, and is the island quiet?
On the northern rim of South Malé Atoll, according to the location page, 20 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport: the site says 20 km, the 2023 fact sheet 8 km and Tripadvisor 8.2 miles. The Embudu Express channel, one of the best-known dive sites in the area, is a few minutes away on Diverland’s boat.
Diverland says you can walk round the island in a quarter of an hour, and guests describe it as green, shady and quiet, with fruit bats, herons and parakeets.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the speedboat cost?
By speedboat from Velana airport, in about 20 minutes, and only on the resort’s own transfer, according to the official FAQ. The shared boat costs $95 per adult and $47.50 per child return until 31 October 2026, and $98 and $49 from 1 November; a private boat costs $500 per person, for 2 people or more.
Outside arrivals, look for Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels at desk A10. Booking.com asks for flight details at least 2 days ahead and gives the child rate for ages 4 to 12; guests count 10 to 30 minutes on the water, depending on the sea.
Can you drive there or park?
No: Embudu is an island with no roads, reached only by speedboat, and the resort asks you to book its transfer. Google Hotels lists parking, but no official source mentions any, and on the island people go barefoot.
How do you get into the sea?
From the beach that runs round the island; the official blog suggests the sheltered south side and the jetty near the water villas. The villas have balconies over the lagoon.
Several guests, from 2024 to November 2025, recommend reef shoes for the bits of coral near the shore. Between June 2025 and March 2026 some stretches were protected against erosion by sandbags and rock barriers.
Is there a house reef you can swim to?
Yes: the official fact sheet puts the reef 10 to 20 metres from the beach, and Diverland says it drops to 30 metres, with 6 current-free dive routes. The website lists blacktip reef sharks, turtles, mantas, stingrays and octopus.
Accounts of the coral differ: alive and varied on the south side for a couple in May 2026, partly dead near the shore for other guests in 2025 and 2026. Mask, snorkel and fins can be hired for $20 a day or $60 for 6 days, according to Diverland’s price list.
What pools are there?
None. The facilities page and the resort map show no pool, guests confirm it up to September 2026, and the Google Hotels listing that shows one is mistaken.
You swim in the lagoon and over the reef around the island. One guest who has been 12 times writes that Embudu’s pool is the sea, and is glad of it.
Is the pool heated, and when is it open?
Embudu has no pool, so there are no hours or temperatures to give. Diverland describes sea water of up to 29°C, and a guest who came in March snorkelled without a wetsuit in water at 26°C.
Where do you eat, and until when?
In the main restaurant, an international buffet: breakfast from 7:00 to 9:15am, lunch from 12:30 to 2pm and dinner from 7:30 to 9pm, with themed nights. The bar by the sea opens from 9am to midnight, the coffee shop from 4 to 6pm, and the snack menu runs from 9:30am to 9pm, with a club sandwich or a burger at $20.
Private dinners on the beach or in the garden follow the seafood menu: jumbo prawns at $95 a head, grilled lobster at $105, lobster thermidor at $115 and a mixed platter at $120, service and GST included. Guests praise the variety, the curries and the spicy local dishes; a vegetarian in July 2026 found plenty to choose.
What meal plans are there, and what do they include?
On the official booking engine, read on 7 October 2026 for 15 November and 20 January, 2 rates: half board and full board, which for 2 cost $100 more a night, or $80 more with the 20% offer on 15 November. The site also has an all-inclusive page, covering meals, snacks and drinks from soft drinks to cocktails.
All inclusive did not appear on the engine for those nights, but guests in February and March 2026 say they had it; one notes that the branded drinks came in cans. On half board in March 2026, the room had 2 one-litre bottles of water a day.
What is the spa like?
Serena Spa sits in a wood-decked pavilion and belongs to a group with spas around the Indian Ocean. The site mentions treatment rooms without saying how many, and the resort map puts the spa beside the main bar.
The site gives no floor area and mentions no sauna, steam room or pool. Between 2023 and 2026 several guests write about the massages and recommend them.
Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are paid for separately: the menu warns that GST and a 10% service charge are added to its prices. No official page publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island.
The Premium vow-renewal package includes the Adam & Eve couples’ massage; for single treatments the menu gives only the length.
What are the spa’s opening hours?
Neither the site nor the menu publishes hours; the menu only gives the length of each treatment, from 20 to 190 minutes. Guests describe booking massages during their stay, and one in November 2025 spent a whole day there.
Which treatments does it offer, and at what prices?
From the menu: the 90-minute Marma Ayurvedic massage, a 50-minute aromatherapy massage, 90 minutes of hot stones, 60 of Thai yoga massage, 50 of Balinese massage and the 60-minute Serena Dhara; then scrubs, wraps, facials, manicures and pedicures.
Packages run from the 3-day Sun Lovers to the 105-minute Diver’s Recovery, the 130-minute Honeymoon Special and the 190-minute Ayurveda Healing. The menu prints no prices, and no other official source publishes them.
Is it good for children?
Yes, in rooms for 2 adults and a child. According to Booking.com a cot is free up to age 2, an extra bed costs $120 a night for a child and $160 from age 12, when guests are charged as adults; children under 2 eat free.
The site presents no kids’ club, and a guest in September 2026 notes the lack of entertainment or play equipment. A parent travelling with 2 children in March 2026 liked the reef-sheltered stretches of beach where children can play in the water; Diverland runs a first try at diving for beginners.
What is there on the island besides the rooms?
According to the facilities page: a health centre, a small gym, the HIRI boutique of Maldivian crafts, laundry, Wi-Fi across the island and land sports: volleyball, badminton, table tennis, table football, billiards and darts. In the evenings, live music, themed buffets and DJs.
On the water, kayaks, canoes and paddleboards; the weekly activities list adds windsurfing, the banana boat and the towed sofa, all paid. There is a mosque on the island, and pets are not allowed, Booking.com says.
Are there any special offers?
The offers page, read on 3 October 2026, listed none, and the site’s 3 offer pages returned an error. On the official engine on 7 October, the Special Offer 26/27 took 20% off the November and January nights read, and the site showed itself cheaper than Booking.com and Expedia.
Booking.com lists, for honeymoon bookings, a fruit basket, a bottle of wine and a decorated bed, once per stay.
Can you get married at Embudu?
Only a renewal of vows, a symbolic ceremony with no legal standing, as the official packages make clear. The Premium package costs $1,800 and covers the setting, bouquet, cake, a bottle of sparkling wine, the certificate, a couples’ massage, a lobster dinner on the beach and a decorated bed.
The Classic package costs $900, for the couple alone, without the massage or dinner; photography, champagne and dinner can be added. Dress and rings come from home, and the site gives no capacity for events with guests.
Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?
Yes, and it is compulsory: according to Booking.com, anyone staying on 24 and 31 December pays a gala dinner supplement of $80 per adult and $40 per child aged 4 to 12, on arrival.
For 2025 the official festive programme set out a beach cocktail party on 31 December, the gala dinner, a DJ party, boduberu drumming (to be confirmed) and the countdown by the sea; on the 24th, a Christmas dive with Diverland. By 7 October the blog had not yet published the 2026 programme.
Is there any golf?
No: no official source mentions golf. The island has volleyball, badminton, table tennis and billiards, and everything else happens in the sea.
When is it open, and when is the best time to go?
All year: on Google Hotels, 112 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price, and the official engine was selling November, December and January. Only 7, 8, 13, 20 and 28 October 2026 showed no price.
The official blog puts the dry season from November to April, best for the reef and diving, and the wetter months from May to October, quieter and cheaper. According to Diverland, mantas gather at Lankan Manta Point from August to November.
How much does a night cost?
Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $247 on 9 October 2026, $515 on 16 October, $397 on 24 October, $291 on 15 November, $287 on 15 December, $480 on 24 December, $531 on 25 December, $483 on 31 December, $374 on 4 January 2027 and $412 on 20 January 2027.
Of the 117 nights read, 112 had a price, from $232 to $531; the calendar names neither the room nor the meal plan. The historical October 2026 quotes from the official engine, for one night for 2 adults before tax, were $299.20 for a Superior Bungalow on half board on 15 November 2026, with a 20% offer, and $368.26 for the same category and board on 20 January 2027. On 31 December 2026, only an Overwater Bungalow was offered, at $580.42 on half board before tax. The speedboat and the gala dinner are extra. These are historical single-night observations; the $232 minimum does not describe the later bookable run. On 12 October 2026, that run starts at $314 for 12–21 December 2026.
What do the reviews say?
On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.6/5 from 584 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.4/5 from 1,655, with location at 4.6 and rooms at 4, Booking.com 8.9/10 from 470, with location at 9.5, and Expedia 8.8/10 from 76.
Across the 464 Google reviews with text, from 2013 to September 2026, 89% of those discussing the location speak well of it, as do 87% of those discussing staff and services; guests describe clean, plain bungalows a few steps from the beach, without a TV, while drinks, diving and the speedboat cost extra. The reef, the food and the kindness recur, and with them the semi-detached bungalows where you hear the room next door, the pool that is not there and the stretches of beach shored up with sandbags.
What taxes and charges are added?
The official snack, drinks and seafood menus and Diverland’s price list already include the 10% service charge and GST; the spa menu adds them: 10% service and GST, 17% since 1 July 2025 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026). The official engine’s rates are «Taxes excluded», while Google Hotels’ calendar amounts include taxes and fees.
According to Booking.com, the Green Tax is already in the price for adults; for children it is added, at $12 a night from age 2, the rate set for resorts (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026). The speedboat and the gala dinners on 24 and 31 December are also extra.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Every source agrees on check-out at noon; check-in varies: 2pm in the home-page FAQ, 1pm on the accommodation page and Booking.com, 1:30pm in the 2023 fact sheet. Booking.com asks for photo ID and the credit card used to book.
In January 2026 a guest left the island 2 and a half hours before the flight.
