Dhiggiri suits couples after a barefoot week on a small island: nurse sharks in the shallows, Vaavu’s dive channels and an all-inclusive plan with Italian cooking. Anyone who wants a swimming pool will be happier elsewhere, as here you swim in the sea.

Our verdict

A water bungalow’s deck seen from inside: 2 loungers, the armchairs and the open ocean.

Dhiggiri is a 3-hectare island in Vaavu Atoll, south of Malé, and the resort fills all of it: 34 water bungalows along a 2-armed jetty, some 30 coral-walled, thatched bungalows on the beach, one garden villa and 3 suites over the water. It is run by the NAKAI group, which also has Alimatha and Maayafushi, and in Italy Francorosso sells it as a Seaclub, with an all-inclusive plan and entertainment in Italian.

People come for the sea. From the beach and from the water bungalows’ ladders you swim among nurse sharks, rays and turtles, and the atoll’s channels, Miyaru Kandu 25 minutes away by boat among them, draw divers. Guests remember the Italian cooking, the cleanliness and the staff: of the 388 Google reviews with text written since 2017, 88% of those discussing service are positive.

There is no pool: you swim in the sea, and anyone who wants one will be happier elsewhere; the official site says the house reef is recovering, and for the best coral you go out by boat with the dive centre. The all-inclusive plan leaves out bottled water, espresso, imported spirits and the à la carte dinner over the water. And anyone travelling from Italy can only buy the package with the flight: €577 a night for 2 at the end of October.

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

  1. Location

An island to itself in a sparsely inhabited atoll, 90 minutes from Malé by speedboat or 20 by seaplane.

  2. Character

An Italian club on a Maldivian island: coral and thatch bungalows, light entertainment, mostly Italian guests.

  3. Rooms

From 40 m² on the beach to 175 m² in the largest suite; the water bungalows have a covered terrace, a sun deck and a ladder into the sea.

  4. Food and social life

Italian and Maldivian buffets 3 times a day, recipes with Gambero Rosso; the restaurant over the water costs extra.

  5. Wellness

Massages with natural oils, paid for; no sauna published and no pool.

  6. The stay as a whole

Packages with the flight from Milan, from €577 a night for 2 in late October to €1,702 at New Year; Green Tax and extras on top.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe roomy water bungalows, the ladder that drops from the deck onto the reef and cleaning twice a day.

The scores come from 388 Google reviews with text, left from 21 February 2017 to 25 August 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Vaavu Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Vaavu Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 27 October 2026, from €577 (seen on Google Hotels on 7 October 2026).

What to expect

Sea that starts at the sand, a table at the end of the jetty, massages, Vaavu’s black sky and days out by boat.

Sharks off the sandbank

The sandbank, which shifts with the tide, faces the sunset, and in the shallows around it there are nearly always harmless nurse sharks. Guests in 2025 and 2026 also describe blacktip reef sharks, eagle rays and, with luck, turtles.

The restaurant at the end of the jetty

The over-water restaurant closes the bungalow jetty: breakfast for guests staying over the water, a lounge in the afternoon and à la carte dinners at night, booked ahead and paid for. Guests recommend the lobster dinner.

Astronomy nights

Far from any lights, the NAKAI group takes guests to watch the Milky Way with its astronomer, and has placed its own constellation, a whale shark near Andromeda, in the Star Walk 2 app. There is a dinner under the stars too.

Out by dhoni

Trips on the traditional boats go to the fishermen’s village, an uninhabited island and Maldivian-style fishing; snorkelling and dive trips leave every morning and afternoon, for half a day or a whole one, and there are night dives.

Good to know before you book

  • Prices for extras and excursions on the island are shown before service charge and local taxes, which are added to the bill. Source: 388 Google reviews read, 21 February 2017 to 25 August 2026

  • Dhiggiri has no swimming pool: you swim in the sea. Google Hotels lists one among its amenities, but no official page, nor the Alpitour and Riu Vacanze descriptions, mention it; the suites over the water have a Jacuzzi.

  • The house reef is close to the beach: the official site speaks of signs of the coral recovering in recent years, and for the best coral you go out by boat with the dive centre. Parts of the shore have anti-erosion barriers. Fish, sharks and rays are still everywhere.

  • The official booking engine turns away residents of Italy and Switzerland, citing commercial exclusivity: from there you travel on Francorosso’s package, flight included. On 7 October 2026 the engine had no availability on any date anyway.

  • Outside the all-inclusive plan: breakfast in the room, espresso, imported spirits, bottled and canned drinks and beers, bottled water, ice creams and smoothies, plus the minibar, spa, diving and excursions; the Green Tax of $12 per person per night is paid on the island.

  • The resort takes guests from 12, say Alpitour and Riu Vacanze, and there is no kids’ club. The nearest doctor is on Alimatha island, about 20 minutes away by dhoni.

Alone, over the water

In August 2026 a woman spent a week on her own in a water bungalow: a beautiful sea, fish, blacktip and nurse sharks, eagle rays, and the best food she had found in a resort outside Italy. The reef, she writes, is damaged, and she was sorry to see small children at an adults-only resort.

The ladder onto the reef

In December 2025 a honeymoon couple describe their water bungalow: you climb down into the sea at any hour from the private ladder, and the sharks gather under the deck. Wi-Fi is free for 2 devices and works reasonably well; the faster one costs little.

Which bungalows to ask for

In September 2025 a guest who spent 8 nights on the beach and 2 over the water recommends bungalows 48 to 55, near the reef and the sandbank, and water bungalows 22 to 30, on the sunset side. He describes an Italian chef who asks guests at lunch what they liked.

Never alone in the water

In January 2025 a guest finds the resort lovely but in need of upkeep where it meets the sea, and warns that a group of harmless sharks is always right at the shoreline: a swim on your own is impossible, though you get used to it.

Questions before you go

The questions people ask before booking Dhiggiri, answered from sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.

What kind of resort is NAKAI Dhiggiri?

A 4-star resort, as Google Hotels and Tripadvisor class it, on Dhiggiri, an island of about 3 hectares in Vaavu Atoll with nothing on it but the resort. It belongs to the NAKAI group, in the Maldives for more than 20 years with Alimatha and Maayafushi, as the official page says, and the resort’s blog describes a complete renovation in 2016.

In Italy it is Francorosso’s Seaclub Dhiggiri, part of the Alpitour group, with Italian-speaking staff and entertainment, according to Alpitour’s page. Tripadvisor records its former name, VOI Dhiggiri Resort; Agoda gives an opening in 1974 and a last renovation in 2020.

Which rooms are there, and how big are they?

The official accommodation page speaks of 6 types but shows 5: water bungalows of about 50 m², beach bungalows of 40, a garden villa of 50, a water suite of 100 and a superior suite of 175, both suites with a Jacuzzi. The sixth is the Junior Water Suite of 90 m², which appears only on the official booking engine.

The counts vary by source: 34 water bungalows for all of them, 26 on the beach for Alpitour, 27 for the site and Riu Vacanze, 28 for Viaggiare è Bello; 65 rooms in all for Agoda, 61 for Tripadvisor. The engine gives 37 m² to the beach bungalows and to the garden villa, which it calls the Garden Bungalow. For the week from 27 October the agency asked €4,036 for 2 in a beach bungalow and €4,593 in a water bungalow, flight included.

Where is Dhiggiri, and is the island quiet?

In Vaavu, or Felidhoo, Atoll, south of Malé: 90 minutes by speedboat or 20 by seaplane, according to the official page. Vaavu is the least populated atoll in the Maldives, the blog says, and its twin island, Alimatha, is about 6 km away, according to Agoda.

It is very quiet: you can walk round it in a few minutes, and guests describe a week without shoes. There is, though, Francorosso’s light entertainment, with fitness by day and a piano bar at night.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the transfer cost?

By speedboat, about 90 minutes, or by seaplane, 20 minutes according to the site and 25 according to Alpitour. Francorosso’s packages include the speedboat; the seaplane costs €107.50 per person each way, sold only as a return, according to Viaggiare è Bello.

Riu Vacanze warns that the speedboat cannot be combined with flights leaving Malé before 9am or arriving after 4pm, nor the seaplane with flights before 9.15am or after 3.30pm. Agoda gives $200 for the transfer; the official site publishes no fares. The official engine’s offers include a dedicated airport service.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: Dhiggiri is an island without roads, reached only by boat or seaplane, and there is no car park. The Google Hotels listing shows «Parking» among its amenities; no official page or tour operator description mentions any.

How do you get into the sea?

Straight from the coral-sand beach, which rings the island and stretches into a sandbank facing the sunset, according to Alpitour; every bungalow has 2 loungers and beach towels. From the water bungalows you go down a private ladder, and the suites have terraces with direct access to the sea, according to the official site.

Many guests go barefoot all week; parts of the shore have anti-erosion barriers.

Is there a house reef you can swim to?

Yes. The official page describes a reef close to the beach and many snorkelling spots nearby, a colourful reef that has shown signs of recovery in recent years; Viaggiare è Bello calls it the Dhiggiri Reef and says you can watch the sea life simply by swimming out from the beach. No source gives the distance in metres.

Guests write above all about the marine life, with nurse and blacktip sharks, eagle rays and turtles; for the best coral you go out by boat with the dive centre. Masks and fins can be hired at the dive centre, according to Alpitour, or brought from home.

Is there a pool?

No. The Alpitour and Riu Vacanze descriptions do not mention one, nor does the official page, and a guest wrote in 2021 that there is none at all. Google Hotels lists a pool among its most cited amenities and Tripadvisor shows «Pool / beach towels»: both listings are wrong. The Water Suite and the Superior Water Suite have a Jacuzzi.

Is there a heated pool or a Jacuzzi?

There is no shared pool, so neither hours nor heating. The Jacuzzis are in the suites: indoors in the Water Suite and the Junior Water Suite, for the room’s own use in the Superior Water Suite, according to the official pages and the booking engine. The spa’s couples’ massage ends with a soak in a tub.

Where do you eat, and what?

In 2 restaurants, according to the official page: the beach restaurant, with Italian and Maldivian cooking, and the over-water restaurant at the end of the bungalow jetty, which serves breakfast to water bungalow guests, becomes a lounge in the afternoon and offers à la carte dinners at night. The central bar is open all day until late, with live or background music.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are buffets, with pasta, risotto, soups, pizza, home-made bread and the day’s fish, and recipes devised with Gambero Rosso, according to Riu Vacanze and Alpitour. Dinner over the water is booked and paid for, as is breakfast in the room.

What does the all-inclusive plan cover?

The Seaclub plan, according to Alpitour: a welcome cocktail, buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner, snacks from 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 8pm, an open bar by the glass from 10am to midnight with soft drinks, juices, water, tea and filter coffee, and from midday wine, draught beer and local spirits; then water in the room and Wi-Fi.

Charged extra are breakfast in the room, espresso, imported spirits, bottled and canned drinks and beers, bottled water, ice creams and smoothies, according to Riu Vacanze, and the minibar. The official site mentions all-inclusive and à la carte plans without describing them.

What is the spa like?

Maadhiga Spa, which the site also spells Maadigha, offers massages in Eastern techniques with Frella natural oils, according to the official page. A guest in August 2026 describes it by the sea, with very skilled Thai therapists.

The site gives neither its size nor its rooms, and no source read mentions a sauna, steam room or thermal pool: it is a massage centre, as Alpitour and Riu Vacanze call it.

Is the spa included, and can outside guests use it?

It is extra: Alpitour lists the massage centre among the paid services. The official engine’s Early Bird offer gives 10% off the spa, and its Romantic Escape offer includes a 60-minute couples’ massage.

No source publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island, which holds only the resort and is reached by boat or seaplane.

What are the spa’s hours?

No source read publishes them: neither the official page nor the tour operators’ listings, which only say services run at the places and times set on the island. The hours Alpitour does publish are those of the bar and the snacks.

Which treatments are on offer?

According to the official page: the couples’ massage, ending with a fresh juice and a soak in the tub; Thai shiatsu, between yoga stretches and pressure points; a deep Balinese massage with acupressure and reflexology; a massage with 14 hot stones; and Ayurvedic kizhi, with bags of rice dipped in hot oil. Riu Vacanze also lists Swedish massage and foot reflexology.

The oils are Frella: citrus, frangipani, jasmine, lemongrass and cold-pressed coconut. No source read publishes treatment prices.

Can you go with children? From what age?

Only from 12: the resort is reserved for adult guests over 12, write Alpitour and Riu Vacanze, and there is no kids’ club. A child of 12 or more can sleep in a water bungalow or with 2 adults in a beach bungalow, according to Viaggiare è Bello.

Many guests choose Dhiggiri for exactly this; a guest in August 2026 reports seeing young children belonging to the owner’s family. A doctor means a dhoni ride to Alimatha.

What is there on the island besides the rooms?

According to the activities page and Alpitour: beach volleyball, bowls, darts, table tennis, billiards, table football, a gym among the palms, aqua aerobics, windsurfing, paddleboards and canoes, a catamaran, a PADI 5 Star dive centre, the spa, a boutique, a library and a TV area.

Motorised water sports, diving, equipment hire, fishing, the catamaran and a private dhoni cost extra. The English version of the activities page names Alimatha, the twin island, several times where it should say Dhiggiri.

Which offers are there?

On 7 October 2026 the official booking engine showed 2 offers without prices: Romantic Escape, with all-inclusive, fast Wi-Fi, a 60-minute couples’ massage, a lobster dinner and a dolphin cruise for 2; and Early Bird, for 5 nights or more booked at least 30 days ahead, with 10% off the spa and the à la carte restaurant.

Honeymooners booking with Francorosso get €100 off per booking and a vow-renewal ceremony on the beach, according to Alpitour, which also waives the single supplement from 1 May to 31 July.

Can you get married on Dhiggiri?

Yes, with a symbolic Maldivian wedding that has no legal standing, according to Alpitour: an accredited celebrant reads the vows in Dhivehi and hands over the document, then the couple sail round the island in a dhoni with an aperitif, to the sound of bodu beru drums. The date and details are agreed with the management, weather permitting.

A couple in December 2022 describe their own Maldivian wedding on the island, arranged through Francorosso. The official site publishes no prices or packages.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

No source read publishes a New Year’s Eve dinner, its programme or a compulsory supplement. On Riu Vacanze’s calendar, on 7 October 2026, the week including New Year’s Eve, from 29 December to 5 January, cost €11,916 for 2 in a beach bungalow with the flight, and the quote listed no dinner on top.

A guest in August 2026 describes a mid-August holiday dinner with a lavish aperitif and buffet; none of the 388 Google reviews with text mentions New Year.

Can you play golf?

No: no source mentions golf, and a 3-hectare island leaves no room for it. The activities are the sea, diving, excursions and sport on the sand, according to the official page.

When is it open, and are there seasonal closures?

No source mentions a closure: Riu Vacanze’s calendar, read on 7 October 2026, had departures every week from October 2026 to January 2027. The same day the official engine marked every date up to October 2028 as unavailable, because the resort is sold through tour operators.

The site names no best season; a guest in January 2025 describes days of poor weather, another in July 2025 speaks well of the low season.

How much does a night cost?

The resort is sold almost entirely as a package: on Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, no night up to 31 January 2027 had a price. On Riu Vacanze’s calendar, read on 7 October 2026, Francorosso’s package for 2 adults and 7 nights, divided by the nights, cost €577 a night from 27 October 2026, €670 from 10 November, €797 from 24 November, €975 from 15 December and €1,702 in New Year week, from 29 December.

Each figure includes the Neos return flight from Milan Malpensa, the speedboat, the cheapest room on sale that week, a beach bungalow or, from 15 December, a water bungalow, and the all-inclusive plan; the Green Tax of $12 per person per night is paid on the island. The official booking engine had no availability and Agoda showed the resort sold out.

What do the reviews say?

On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.7/5 from 788 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.7/5 from 1,715, first of 16 hotels in Fulidhoo, with a Travellers’ Choice 2026 award and 4.8 for location, 4.5 for rooms and 4.3 for value.

In the 388 Google reviews with text since 2017, 96% of those discussing the location are positive, 88% of those on staff and services and 85% of those on the rooms. A service charge and local taxes are added to the price of every extra and of the excursions.

Which taxes and supplements are added?

The Green Tax of $12 per person per night, from age 2, is paid on the island, according to Alpitour. The packages read on Riu Vacanze include airport taxes, fuel surcharges and basic insurance, and leave out the ETS emissions charge, tips and extras.

On the island the seaplane, spa, diving, excursions, dinner over the water and the minibar are paid separately. Service charge and local taxes are added to the prices of extras and excursions, as guests wrote in 2024 and 2025.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to Agoda, which gives reception hours until 2am. A guest in 2025 reports that anyone leaving on an evening flight is given a room until departure.
