Finolhu suits couples who want someone else to organise the day: a butler comes with every villa. If choosing among several restaurants matters, allow for boat trips to Kani.

Our verdict

The water villas at dusk, lights on, a pool on the deck and the steps going down into the lagoon.

Club Med Finolhu Villas has Gasfinolhu to itself, a spit of sand in North Malé Atoll next to Kanifinolhu, home of Club Med Kani. It opened on 31 January 2015 with 52 adults-only villas, Recommend reported on 4 February that year; there are still 52, on the beach and over the water, from 151 to 168 m², each with a pool, and children are now accepted from the age of 8. It belongs to Club Med’s top tier, the Exclusive Collection, and the official site counts 6,000 m² of solar panels on the island.

People come for the quiet and the service. Of the 263 Google reviews that mention the staff, 90% are positive: the butler on WhatsApp, waiters who remember dietary needs, the guided snorkelling trips. There is one restaurant on the island, the Motu, over the lagoon, where diners describe lit-up fish beneath the deck and blacktip reef sharks.

It is an island to choose for what it holds on its own: 52 villas with their pools, a single restaurant and quiet. Many of the sports and the other restaurants are a boat ride away: padel, the trapeze, sailing and 2 of the restaurants are on Kani, and the boat from Malé, 30 minutes, is extra unless you buy your flights through Club Med.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

Finolhu is Club Med’s island of just 52 villas, each with its own pool: the all-inclusive plan in a quiet place, with Kani’s sports and club life 5 minutes away by boat.

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

A small island with only the resort on it, 30 minutes by boat from Malé; Kani and its sports 5 minutes away.

  2. Character

Few guests, themed evenings and live music; club life is on Kani, 5 minutes by boat.

  3. Rooms

4 villa types of 151 to 168 m², all with a private pool; little to choose between them.

  4. Food and social life

The Motu over the water, with table service and Champagne by the glass from 6pm; one restaurant on the island.

  5. Wellness

The Ella Baché spa over the water and massages in the villa, at extra cost; no sauna or steam room listed.

  6. The stay as a whole

$1,334 to $1,898 a night for 2, all-inclusive; the boat from Malé is extra.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Finolhu’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests write of a small, quiet island, turquoise water, and the sharks and rays seen from the villa steps and from the restaurant.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests like the villas for being large and clean, with a private pool and, over the water, steps that go down into the sea.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe the butler who answers on WhatsApp, the care over diets, the snorkelling guides and the evenings with the DJ.

  4. Breakfast

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The butler brings a continental breakfast to the villa, included in the price; on one morning of the stay it arrives on a floating tray in the private pool.

  5. Price

The price covers the villa with its private pool, the butler, meals, Champagne by the glass from 6pm and snorkelling by boat; the spa, diving and excursions are charged separately.

The scores come from 346 Google reviews with text, left from 4 November 2015 to 12 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in North Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 7 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in North Malé Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 10 November 2026, from $1,334 (seen on Google Hotels on 7 October 2026).

What to expect

A restaurant above the lagoon, a spa on stilts, boat trips to the reef and breakfast in the villa’s own pool.

The Motu over the lagoon

The island’s only restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, international cooking with light and vegetarian dishes, indoors or on the deck over the water, with an adults-only area. The Motu Bar has a glass floor onto the sea below, and from 6pm Champagne by the glass is included there and at the pool bar.

Good to know before you book

  • The all-inclusive plan leaves out the spa, diving, excursions, laundry and room service beyond the continental breakfast. Source: clubmed.co.uk

  • Much of what the site lists is on Kani, the next island: padel, the trapeze, sailing, the underwater trail, 2 restaurants and 2 bars. It is 5 minutes by boat according to the factsheet, 7 according to the sailing page, and Finolhu guests use its sports and activities without limit.

  • The transfer from Malé, 30 minutes by boat, is included only if you buy your flights from Club Med. Otherwise, on the US site on 7 October 2026, the shared boat from the airport cost $848 return for 2 and a private boat $2,300.

  • Children are accepted from 8, from 12 in the beach villas on the sunrise side and from 18 over the water. Finolhu’s page describes no children’s club on the island: the Mini Club and the teenagers’ clubs are on Kani.

  • The beach shelves into a shallow lagoon, and from the water villas’ steps guests see blacktip sharks and rays. For the reef itself you go out by boat: the site mentions no house reef.

Beach or water

In February 2026 a couple tried both kinds of villa: the sunset beach villa is quieter, with greenery round it and very shallow sea in front; the water villa is the same but barer. They counted 120 people on the island at most and loved the restaurant on stilts, with the fish lit up at night.

The reef every day

The boat from Malé

In October 2025, at the height of the rainy season, a couple had a few stormy days and found the boat trips hard going, 20 to 25 minutes to the airport: take seasickness tablets, they advise. They liked the à la carte restaurant, less so the desserts.

Questions before you go

The questions people ask before booking Finolhu, answered from sources read between 3 and 7 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Club Med Finolhu Villas?

A 52-villa resort in Club Med’s top tier, the Exclusive Collection, on Gasfinolhu, a North Malé Atoll island with only the resort on it; Google Hotels rates it 5 stars. It opened on 31 January 2015 with 52 adults-only villas, according to Recommend, and the New York architects Yuji Yamazaki presented it as the Maldives’ first entirely solar-powered 5-star resort, on an island of about 13 acres (Archello).

Today the official page counts 6,000 m² of solar panels and accepts children from 8. It is not to be confused with Finolhu Baa Atoll, a different resort in Baa Atoll: that is the page Booking.com opens at the address «finolhu».

Which villas are there, and how big are they?

4 types, according to the official factsheet: on the beach, 2 of 168 m², one on the sunrise side for 3 guests and one on the sunset side for 4; over the water, one of 151 m² on the sunrise side and one of 168 m² on the sunset side, both for 3. The sizes are minimums, and the site does not say how many villas there are of each type.

All have a private pool on the deck, a separate living room, a bath and a shower, an espresso machine and a butler; 3 types of 4 add an outdoor patio, and the water villas have steps down into the sea.

Where is it, and is it quiet?

On Gasfinolhu, in North Malé Atoll, 30 minutes by boat from the airport, according to the official page; next door is Kanifinolhu with Club Med Kani, 5 minutes away. The official address is P.O. Box N 2051, North Male Atoll.

It is very quiet: 52 villas, one restaurant, 2 bars and one pool, with guests writing of 100 to 120 people on the island at most. A couple in February 2026 found the sunset-side villas the quieter ones.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the transfer cost?

By boat, 30 minutes from Malé’s international airport, according to the factsheet. It is included only if you book your flights with Club Med; otherwise, on the US site on 7 October 2026, the shared boat cost $848 return for 2 adults and a private one $2,300, for the whole party.

The transfer can be added up to 2 days before departure, and you may wait half an hour on arrival. A wedding planner’s site gives 30 minutes by seaplane; Club Med’s own site states that the journey is by boat.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: Finolhu is an island reached only by boat, with no roads. The Google Hotels listing puts «Parking» among its amenities, but no official source describes any parking; buggies get you around the island.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach, and from the water villas, which have direct access to the sea down their own steps, according to the official page. In front of the beach villas the lagoon is shallow, 70 cm by one couple’s reckoning in February 2026, and another warned in September 2024 that where the water villas sit over coral, swimming is less easy.

Is there a house reef you can swim to?

The site names none. Its snorkelling section suggests starting from the beach in the shallows, or taking a boat to the right spot; the trip is included, from 8 years old, with a compulsory life jacket and a swimming test. The trail through the artificial reefs the marine biologist has planted is on Kani.

From the villas and the restaurant, guests see blacktip sharks, rays and turtles. Some third-party sites describe an exceptional house reef in a UNESCO reserve, but that reserve is Baa Atoll, home of the other Finolhu.

What pools are there?

One main outdoor pool, an infinity pool facing the lagoon, 1.3 to 1.5 metres deep and open to children over 8, according to the factsheet, with the pool bar beside it. Then the private pools: all 52 villas have one on the deck.

The site gives no dimensions for the main pool. Aqua-fitness classes are held there, for guests aged 16 and over.

Is the pool heated, and when is it open?

The official page says the resort pool can be used all day, and the factsheet lists it as available all year. No source read mentions heating or a water temperature.

Where do you eat, and what?

On the island there is the Motu, according to the official page: international cooking with light and vegetarian dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner, served at the table indoors or on the deck over the water, with an adults-only area; the factsheet gives it 52 seats inside and 50 outside. There are 2 bars, the Motu Bar with its glass floor and the pool bar, and the resort also offers dinner cooked by a private chef in your villa.

On Kani, by boat, are the Veli, with Asian, European and Indian cooking, the Kandu with the grilled catch at dinner, a food truck and 2 bars, all included. Guests praise the cooking and the care with diets, from vegan to gluten-free.

What does the all-inclusive cover?

On the booking summary on 7 October 2026: full board with drinks, an open bar and snacks all day, more than 60 sports and activities, day and evening entertainment, and Wi-Fi. The official page adds Champagne by the glass from 6pm and cocktails made with premium spirits.

Left out are the spa, diving, excursions, room service beyond the continental breakfast, and laundry; the transfer is included only with Club Med flights. The site sells no other plan: all-inclusive is the only way to stay.

What is the spa like?

A Club Med Spa by Ella Baché, the skincare house founded in Paris in 1936, with pavilions over the water and the sea beneath your feet, according to the official page; massages can also be given in the villa. The site publishes no floor area, number of treatment rooms or zones.

No official source read mentions a sauna, a steam room or a whirlpool. When the resort opened in 2015 the spa was run by ILA, Recommend wrote.

Is the spa included, does it cost extra, and can non-residents use it?

Treatments are paid for and booked ahead, from the age of 18, according to the US official page. No source publishes spa access included in the price; Club Med’s Day Pass page offers Kani, not Finolhu, and the island has only the resort on it.

What are the spa’s opening hours?

The site publishes none. It asks you to book treatments in advance, or to call at the spa reception on arrival to schedule them, according to the official page; packages cannot be transferred or changed.

Which treatments does it offer, and at what prices?

On the US page on 7 October 2026: a 50-minute facial from $202, a 50-minute massage from $227, and tailored packages of 2 hours from $481, 4 hours from $812 and 6 hours from $1,079, to be spread over several days.

All use Ella Baché products, from 18 years old; the site advises against treatments in pregnancy and in the first 3 months after giving birth.

Can you go with children?

Yes, from the age of 8, according to the factsheet: from 12 in the sunrise beach villas and from 18 over the water, so a family with a child aged 8 to 11 can stay only in the sunset beach villa, the one type for 4 guests. Among its included services the page lists kids’ clubs for ages 4 to 17, but it describes none on the island.

At Club Med Kani, 5 minutes away, there are the Mini Club Med+ for ages 4 to 10, the Teens Club for 11 to 13 and the Chill Pass for 14 to 17; Finolhu’s site does not say whether its guests’ children can join. When it opened in 2015, the island was adults only.

What is on the island besides the villas?

According to the official page: the Motu and its 2 bars, the pool, the spa, a Technogym gym, a tennis court, yoga, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling and the dive centre; 26 activities included and 19 at extra cost in all. The page gave the tennis court as closed until 10 October 2026, the factsheet until the 5th.

Padel, the trapeze, sailing in Hobie Cat catamarans, table tennis and the underwater trail are on Kani. Paid excursions include a lobster picnic on a catamaran, from $215, and a trip to Malé, from $125.

Are there any offers?

Yes, on price: on 7 October 2026 the US site applied an early-booking discount to a 7-night stay, showing the original price struck through beside the reduced one, and promised savings of up to $810 a person a week. A 3-night stay carried no discount.

The UK site announced up to 20% off summer 2027, with sales about to open. No honeymoon package is published for Finolhu.

Can you get married at Finolhu?

The site publishes no weddings at Finolhu. Club Med’s weddings page offers its packages in Cancún, Turkoise and Punta Cana, with vow renewals among the occasions it celebrates, and Finolhu’s factsheet covers only corporate events and private cocktails, on request.

Many guests come for a honeymoon or an anniversary, and describe surprise dinners on the beach arranged by the butler.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

Club Med’s New Year page promises an included celebration at its resorts, with a gourmet dinner, music and fireworks, but it does not name Finolhu or publish a programme. A guest in January 2023 recalled the New Year events and dinner.

You pay for it in the week’s price: from 22 to 29 December 2026 a night cost over 40% more than in November.

Can you play golf?

No: no official page mentions golf. The sports are on the water, the tennis court and the gym, and padel and the trapeze on Kani, according to the official page.

When is it open, and what is the best season?

All year, as far as the official pages say. On the UK site’s calendar, read on 7 October 2026, arrivals from 1 to 9 October were shown as unavailable and every arrival from 10 October to 31 December had a price; the tennis court was due to reopen on 10 October.

The site names no best season. Guests in September and October 2025 describe rainy days and rough seas; surfing, the site says, runs from May to October, from Kani.

How much does a night cost?

On the official Club Med site, read on 7 October 2026 for 2 adults without flights and for 7 nights in the least expensive villa, a night cost $1,382 from 20 October 2026, $1,334 from 10 November, $1,352 from 8 December and $1,898 from 22 December, taxes and fees included, all-inclusive.

These are the site’s price per person, doubled and divided by the nights: Club Med sells by the person and the week. The villa was the sunrise beach villa, and on 20 October the sunset one. Booking.com and Expedia do not sell the resort, Agoda showed it sold out for 3 of the same weeks and Trip.com was not taking bookings; Google Hotels, on 6 October, showed no prices. The boat from Malé is extra unless you buy your flights from Club Med.

What do the reviews say?

On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.8/5 from 535 ratings; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.9/5 from 2,018, first of the 3 hotels on Gasfinolhu, with a Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best 2026 award and 4.5 for value.

In the 346 Google reviews with text, 95% of those who mention the location and 90% of those who mention the staff are positive: the small, quiet island, the butler on WhatsApp and the guided snorkelling trips recur. The all-inclusive does not cover the spa, diving or excursions. Many of the sports and 2 restaurants are on Kani, 5 minutes by boat, and without Club Med flights the boat from Malé is extra.

What is in the total, and what comes on top?

The official summary for 2 adults from 10 to 17 November 2026 came to $9,340.66, «Taxes and fees included»: an early-booking discount of $475.94, a membership fee of $120 and lodging taxes of $178. The same stay on the UK site cost £7,682, with a £30 annual booking fee and £134 in taxes.

For 3 nights, 10 to 13 November, the total was $4,275, with no discount. On top come the transfer, unless you buy your flights, the spa, diving, excursions, laundry and room service beyond breakfast.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Arrival is between 3pm and 8pm and you leave the villa by 10am for departures before 3pm, according to the factsheet; arrive early and lunch is on the house. A guest in November 2025, on a night flight, kept the villa until 7pm.
