Bathala suits couples and friends who want to swim with sharks, turtles and mantas straight from the beach, all inclusive, from $524 a night for 2 adults in December 2026: the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night. Anyone after luxurious rooms should look elsewhere: here they are white and simple.

A swing on the beach at sunset, 2 people seated between torches lit on the sand.
  1. The villa to request

I would ask for a water villa: it stands on stilts over the lagoon, on one of 2 piers, with a private terrace, a king bed with a sofa bed and a walk-in shower with twin basins.

  2. The cheapest weeks

In the 12 October 2026 reading, the cheapest 7 nights at one price are 3–9 April 2027, at $698 for 2 adults. 13–19 December 2026 runs from $524 to $612; 31 December to 6 January 2027, from $742 to $1,531.

  3. Extras and the seaplane

Booking.com lists the seaplane, return, at $432 per adult and $240 per child under 12, read on 4 October 2026. Dining under the Stars, the dinner on the beach, is at extra charge and needs a reservation.

  4. Entering the reef

The house reef, which the resort calls a paradise for divers and snorkellers alike, is entered through 6 channels that lead to the coral; its marine biologist escorts a 30-minute swim through them.

What Sandies Bathala is

Bathala is a small island on the eastern rim of North Ari Atoll, close to the outer reef. The Swiss group Planhotel, which also runs the Diamonds resorts on Athuruga and Thudufushi, reopened it in June 2019 as the third Sandies resort after a complete renovation, according to its press release at the time. There are 70 rooms: 46 beach bungalows, 22 of them interconnecting, and 24 villas on stilts along 2 jetties.

The reason to come is the reef. It runs all the way round the island, you enter it through 6 channels marked with pink buoys, and guests in 2025 and 2026 describe sharks, grey ones among them, turtles, eagle rays and mantas a few strokes from the shore. Of the 190 Google reviews with text, 93% of those discussing the location are positive.

Everything else is simple by design: white, unfussy rooms, sand underfoot even in the bar and the restaurant, and Italian entertainment that guests find low-key. Excursions are charged separately, from $55 for the Aquarium Reef to $190 for the whale sharks on the 2021 price list, and seaplanes fly only by day, from about 7am to 3.30pm: in bad weather, or with an evening flight out of Malé, arrivals and departures are planned around those hours.

The scores come from 190 Google reviews with text, left from 12 July 2019 to 25 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Ari Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The house reef

The reef surrounds the island and is reached through 6 channels marked with pink buoys. The resort lends mask, fins and snorkel free and guides guests over the reef twice a day, at 11am and 4pm; because of the currents it asks everyone to enter through the channels and always with fins and a mask.

From the water villa to the reef

In September 2026 a couple wrote that they had never had a reef so easy to reach: they stepped down from their water villa straight into the fish. The villa was simply furnished but comfortable, and the manta trip was the strongest memory of the journey.

The practical details

In July 2026 a guest in a beach bungalow listed the details: an island you walk round in 5 minutes, about 160 guests at most, water in glass bottles twice a day, good Wi-Fi in the room too, espresso at $3, no sandbank of its own and an hour and a half by boat to get there.

Seaplane hours

In July 2026 a guest had to leave the room at 7am for a 7.30pm flight, because the seaplane schedule set the transfer, and the resort put the blame on the travel agency. The beauty of the place is not in doubt, the guest writes; the service that day is.

2 weeks barefoot

In February 2026 a couple looking for a fine reef, an island not too big, a seaplane arrival and few sandbags on the beach found all of it on Bathala. They preferred their beach bungalow, roomy enough for 2 and with an open-air shower, to the water villa, and spent 2 weeks without shoes.

When the sea gets up

In July 2025, in the low season, a couple had sun almost every day and about 70 guests on the island. From the water villa they looked straight onto the reef, but they write that in a rough sea the room vibrates a little, and that the speedboat from Malé can be a bumpy ride.

The whale shark trip

In February 2026 a couple paid $170 each for the whale shark trip: after 5 hours out and no whale shark, they were taken to swim with mantas for 15 minutes, a trip that costs $75. They took it up with the management and asked to pay only for the mantas.

Questions before you go

What people ask before booking Bathala, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Sandies Bathala?

A 4-star, all-inclusive resort run by the Swiss group Planhotel, which presents it as the third Sandies resort on its official page. According to the press release of 21 June 2019, Bathala reopened that year after a complete renovation, with 70 rooms: 46 beach bungalows and 24 water villas.

The same release calls it best suited to couples and friends; the official page adds families and divers. The resort is the only thing on the island. Tripadvisor gave it a Travellers’ Choice award for 2026.

Which rooms are there, and how big are they?

2 types, according to the rooms page and the 2024 fact sheet: 46 beach bungalows, with a veranda on the sand, a king or twin beds, and a bathroom with a double basin and an open-air shower, 22 of them interconnecting; and 24 water villas on 2 jetties, with a dining deck, sun loungers, direct access to the reef, a king bed and a sofa bed.

All have air conditioning, tea and coffee, a minibar, a telephone, Wi-Fi and a safe. No official source, nor Booking.com nor Expedia, publishes a room size; 2 guests, in 2025 and 2026, found the water villas very spacious. Booking.com lists a queen bed where the site says king. No room has a private pool.

Where is it, and is the island quiet?

On the eastern side of North Ari Atoll, near the outer reef, says the official page; the postal address is P.O. Box 2019, North Ari Atoll. Booking.com puts Malé airport 40 miles away, about 64 km.

It is small and quiet: guests walk round it in 5 to 10 minutes and count from about 70 to about 160 guests. Evenings bring Italian entertainment, karaoke and themed nights, which nearly everyone finds low-key; by day, beyond the sea, there are the pool, the spa, the gym, kayaks and beach volleyball.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?

By seaplane from Velana airport, about 15 minutes according to the official page, which advises booking it before you travel and sells it with the stay. Booking.com describes a combined flight of about 25 minutes with Trans Maldivian Airways, at $432 per adult and $240 per child under 12, return, free under 2.

Seaplanes fly from about 7am to 3.30pm. Several guests, in July 2025, December 2025 and July 2026, came by speedboat instead, about an hour and a half and uncomfortable in a rough sea; the official site does not mention it. Anyone with an evening flight out of Malé therefore leaves the island on one of the daytime flights, and in bad weather the seaplane may stay grounded.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: Bathala is an island reached only by seaplane or boat, as the official page says, and there are no roads. The Google Hotels listing includes «Parking» among its amenities, but no page of the resort mentions a car park.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach in front of the bungalows and through the reef channels, which the resort’s sustainability report marks with pink buoys and signs; from the water villas you go straight onto the reef, says the villas page. The resort asks guests always to enter with fins and a mask, because of the waves and currents.

A guest in July 2026 recommends reef shoes for sensitive feet, since the island is sand and coral, and warns that Bathala has no large lagoon or sandbank of its own: the nearest, Kalu Ghiri, is an excursion.

Is there a house reef you can swim to?

Yes, and it is the reason to come. According to the official page it surrounds the island and is home to grey reef sharks, nurse sharks, mantas and eagle rays; you enter through 6 channels. Guided swims leave daily at 11am and 4pm, free, and mask, fins and snorkel come with the all-inclusive.

Guests in 2025 and 2026 describe fish 2 metres from the shore, sharks, turtles and rays every day, and sharks under the jetty lights at night. In 2023 the resort measured 22.1% live coral cover on the reef and was growing 350 fragments in a nursery; in September 2026 a returning guest found the drop-off’s corals recovering.

What is the pool like?

There is one, shared: an infinity pool on the beach looking over the ocean, open daily from 8am to 8pm, according to the official page. The rooms have no private pools.

Loungers and towels are part of the all-inclusive.

Is the pool heated, and when is it open?

From 8am to 8pm every day, according to the official page, which says nothing about heating or temperature.

Where do you eat, and until when?

At the Island Gallery, the main restaurant, from the buffet: breakfast from 7.30am to 10am, lunch from 1pm to 2.30pm and dinner from 8pm to 9.30pm, with Mediterranean cooking, live stations, local fish, fresh pasta, pizza and themed menus every night. Dining under the Stars is the à la carte dinner on the beach, from 8pm to 9.30pm, charged extra and booked ahead.

The Island Bar is open from 10am to midnight. The romantic beach dinners cost $90 to $140 per person for 4 courses. Guests praise the grilled fish, the tuna and the pasta, and the care taken over coeliac and vegan diets.

Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?

The site sells the all-inclusive: every official offer uses it, and no other plan is published. The all-inclusive gives a welcome cocktail, the 3 buffets at the Island Gallery, soft drinks, juices, house wine, local beer, American coffee and tea with meals and at the bar from 10am to midnight, selected cocktails and spirits from 6pm, morning pastries and afternoon canapés at the bar, Wi-Fi, loungers and towels, snorkelling gear and guided reef swims.

Premium drinks, the à la carte dinner, excursions, diving and the spa are extra. The plan covers American coffee: espresso and cappuccino are charged at $3 each, according to guests writing between 2022 and 2026.

What is the spa like?

The Mvua Spa, inspired by Africa, has 2 treatment rooms and an open-air massage area with a sea view, and offers massages, scrubs, rituals and facials. The site gives no size and mentions no sauna, steam room or hot tub, and Google Hotels marks a hot tub as unavailable.

Booking.com lists yoga classes and Expedia daily wellness sessions from yoga to meditation, which the official pages do not describe.

Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are paid for separately: the 2025 menu prices them in dollars per person without saying whether tax and service are included. The spa is not part of the all-inclusive. A couples’ massage is among the extras the honeymoon page suggests adding.

No page publishes a spa day pass or access for anyone not staying on the island, where the resort stands alone and arrival is only by seaplane or boat.

What are the spa’s hours?

From 9am to 7pm every day, according to the spa page, where treatments can also be booked online by naming the treatment; the form offers half-hourly slots from 9am to 7pm. Changes and cancellations go to the spa by email, and the menu asks for notice before a hot stone massage.

Which treatments are offered, and at what prices?

From the 2025 menu: the 80-minute Indian Ocean hot stone massage at $105, the Mvua Secret massage at $85 for 50 minutes or $100 for 75, the 55-minute Balinese at $95, a 30-minute head, back or foot massage at $60, and the 45-minute enzyme facial or coffee scrub at $70; deep tissue pressure costs $15 more.

Among the packages, Sunny Bathala, 2 treatments in 50 minutes, costs $95, Dream of Bathala $110, the 110-minute Superior Body Glow $175 and the Ari Atoll Journey, one treatment a day for 3 days, $240.

Is it good for children?

Children are welcome; the resort is not adults-only. The official page calls it suitable for families, and the guest services include a cot and high chair on request and a resident nurse. According to Booking.com, children of all ages are welcome but pay as adults from 3; an extra bed costs $200 a night up to 11 and $280 from 12, and a cot is free.

The official pages mention no kids’ club and no children’s menu; the 22 interconnecting bungalows help families. The guest checking in must be 18, according to Expedia. The seaplane costs $240 for children under 12.

What is there on the island besides the rooms?

According to the guest services and sports pages: the spa, the dive centre, the pool, an air-conditioned gym open from 10am to 7pm, a boutique with a pharmacy, a games room, kayaks, beach volleyball, boules, billiards, table football, table tennis and darts, a 24-hour front desk with currency exchange, laundry and a resident nurse.

The Werner Lau Diving Center runs SSI, CMAS and PADI courses, nitrox dives and underwater scooters, and goes to Fishhead, Mayaa Tila, Maaga Tila and Manta Point. The marine biologists give talks and run coral and shark projects; several guests also praise the boutique’s tailor.

What offers are there?

Read on 6 October 2026: Last Minute, with the all-inclusive, Wi-Fi, and tax and service included and, when booked on the site, «VIP Amenities» the page does not describe; and Stay Longer, Save More, a discount for 7 or 10 nights on a flexible or non-refundable rate. Neither page gives a figure.

Divers have a dive centre code, WERNERLAU_BATHALA, worth up to 15% off on the official site. Honeymooners with a marriage certificate get a decorated bed, fruit on arrival and 20% off in the boutique.

Can you get married on Bathala?

The resort celebrates only the renewal of vows: the official page and the 2025 price list offer 3 ceremonies in a white gazebo on the beach, with the vows read in 2 languages, Dhivehi being compulsory by law, bodu beru drummers, a cake and sparkling wine.

Romantic costs $850 with 25 photographs and a sunset cruise, Golden $1,150 with a beach dinner and 50 photographs, and Diamond $1,350 with a couples’ spa treatment as well, 10% service and GST included at 16%, the rate before July 2025; GST has been 17% since 1 July 2025 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026). No guest capacity is published.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

The official pages read on 12 October 2026 publish no Christmas or New Year programme. On Google Hotels, read the same day, the nights from 25 December to 1 January had no price: Christmas Eve cost $792 and 2 January $1,308, the dearest night of the calendar.

Can you play golf?

No: the official pages mention no golf, on the island or among the excursions, which are snorkelling trips, mantas, whale sharks, sunset fishing, cruises and a visit to a local island.

When is it open, and what is the best season?

All year, as far as the official pages say: they announce no closures. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 78 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price; the other 39 did not, among them every night from 25 December to 1 January, which does not mean the resort was closed.

The site names no best season. In July 2025 and July 2026, in the low season, 2 guests had sun nearly every day, with a couple of hours of rain.

How much does a night cost?

Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $793 on 14 November 2026, $730 on 20 November, $505 on 16 December, $719 on 24 December, $1,091 on 2 January 2027, $526 on 8 January and $978 on 22 January 2027.

Of the 117 nights read, 78 had a price, from $448, a night of 19 October within 21 days of the reading, to $1,091; the calendar shows the lowest price among the sellers and names neither the room nor the meal plan. From 25 December to 1 January there was no price at all. The seaplane is extra.

What do the reviews say?

On 6 October 2026 Google showed 4.6/5 from 246 ratings and Trip.com 4.7/5 from 73; on 3 October Tripadvisor gave 4.7/5 from 1,062, with a Travellers’ Choice award for 2026, Booking.com 9.2/10 from 106, with location and cleanliness at 9.6, and Expedia 9.6/10 from 70.

Across the 190 Google reviews with text, 93% of those discussing the location are positive, 85% of those discussing the staff and 82% of those discussing the rooms. The reef, the food and the staff recur. Excursions are charged separately, from $55 to $190 on the 2021 price list, and transfers depend on seaplane hours and the weather.

Which taxes and charges are added?

The official offers, such as Last Minute, state that tax and service are included in the rate; Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives include taxes and fees, while Tripadvisor warns that its partners’ prices exclude them. None of the pages read names the Green Tax. The 2025 ceremony price list includes 10% service and GST at 16%, the rate before July 2025; it has been 17% since 1 July 2025 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026).
