The water villas along a curving jetty, seen from above over the reef and the lagoon
  1. The villa to ask for

I would ask for a Thundi Water Villa with Pool: 142 m² beside the resort’s sandbank, with an 18 m² infinity pool and a poolside deck with access to the house reef.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026 the lowest run is $365 a night, from 13 to 18 May 2027, and again from 14 June to 1 July. The week of 3 to 9 January 2027 runs from $598 to $783.

  3. On top of the rate

The resort’s offers are in dollars, subject to government taxes and service charge. Excursion prices already include a 10% service charge and 17% GST: the guided house reef tour is $39 per person, for 2 people or more.

  4. The reef safari days

The Snorkel Safari, a shared reef excursion for 8 to 20 people, runs every Saturday and Wednesday from 10am to noon and costs $69 per person.

What Kuramathi is

Kuramathi opened in 1975 according to Maldives Magazine and in 1977 according to Maldives Idylls, among the country’s first resorts (Maldives Magazine, Maldives Idylls). It belongs to Universal Enterprises, the Maldivian family behind Baros, Milaidhoo and Kandolhu, and since 28 February 2026 it has been Niva Kuramathi Maldives, under VERSA Hospitality’s new Niva brand (Hotelier Maldives, Let’s Go Maldives). Google Hotels rates it 4 stars (Google Hotels).

There are 348 villas of 11 kinds, from the 70 m² Beach Villa in the greenery to the 310 m² Honeymoon Pool Villa with a 10-metre lap pool; 113 have a private pool (villas, Honeymoon Pool Villa). Over the water stand 30 Deluxe Water Villas, 33 Water Villas with Pool, 16 Thundi villas beside the sandbank and 50 Water Bungalows with Pool (Deluxe Water Villa, Water Villa with Pool, Thundi, Water Bungalow).

Meals are taken at 3 buffets, Haruge, Malaafaiy and Farivalhu, assigned by villa, and at 9 à la carte restaurants, from Kobe’s teppanyaki over the water to the grilled fish at The Reef; there are 7 bars, plus the Sky Bar 7 metres above the sea, private bookings only (dining and bars, resort fact sheet). The island has a medical centre with a hyperbaric chamber, a PADI and SSI dive centre and Bageecha, the free club for children aged 3 to 12 (resort fact sheet, FAQ).

It scores 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 2,713 reviews, 4.8 on Tripadvisor from 7,319 with Travelers’ Choice 2026, and 9.3 on Booking.com from 819 (Google Hotels, Tripadvisor, Booking.com). Guests praise above all the villa attendants and the reef; you get around the island by buggy, and transfers run by day only.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

Kuramathi is worth the trip for its space: an island nearly 2 km long in North Ari Atoll, with a mile-long sandbank, trails under the banyans and the reef a few steps from the shore.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Kuramathi’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the green of the banyans, the sandbank at the island’s tip and the reef a few steps from the shore, where they swim among turtles and reef sharks.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The villas are praised for their cleanliness and for the care of the attendants who make them up each day, often thanked by name in the reviews.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The staff are the most frequent praise: guests thank by name their villa attendants, the waiters at Haruge and Farivalhu and the buggy drivers.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is a buffet at the restaurant assigned to your villa, Haruge, Malaafaiy or Farivalhu; several guests remember it as the best meal of their stay.

  5. Price

Guests who find the bill fair talk about what they get: high-end service and food, and a snorkelling trip to the Rasdhoo reef laid on by the resort at no charge.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 14 May 2025 to 5 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:
