For families and couples who want the Maldives without a seaplane, Kurumba starts at $278 in December 2026 for one night taken alone: the lowest price any seller showed on Google for that night, 2 adults. Anyone after a remote island will be happier elsewhere, since the planes are often heard.

  1. The bungalow to ask for

I would ask for a Beachfront Deluxe Bungalow: 74 m², one of 34 in a verdant grove, with direct ocean access a few steps from the front terrace.

  2. The weeks that cost less

One night taken alone costs $278 from 13 to 15 December 2026, and the cheapest week is 20 to 26 May 2027, at $315 a night. Booked as 7 nights from 16 November, the lowest seller asked $450 a night.

  3. The boat from the airport

On Booking.com the shared speedboat from the airport is $60.50 per adult each way and $30.25 per child; the private one is $96.53 per adult. Resort offers are in dollars, subject to government taxes and service charge.

  4. The restaurants’ closed days

Hamakaze, the Japanese restaurant, serves 2 seatings from 6.30pm to 9.30pm and is closed on Wednesday; Mahal, the Indian, serves from 7pm to 9.30pm and is closed on Sunday and Thursday.

What Kurumba is

Kurumba Village opened on 3 October 1972 on Vihamanaafushi, an uninhabited coconut island near the Hulhulé airstrip: 30 rooms of coral stone and coconut timber, the country’s first resort, named after the Dhivehi word for coconut (resort history). It was rebuilt from scratch in 2003 and now carries the Niva name, from Versa Hospitality (official site). A walk round the island is 1.65 km on the map (OpenStreetMap): about 20 minutes.

Its 187 units run from 74 m² Superior Rooms and Deluxe Bungalows to beach and pool villas of 103 to 306 m², up to the 768 m² Two Bedroom Kurumba Residence (rooms and villas).

There are 7 restaurants: the Vihamanaa buffet, Thila over the water, Japanese Hamakaze, Indian Mahal, Khing Thai, Middle Eastern Al Qasr and the Café; the bars are Kandu, Athiri and Fez (dining and bars). The à la carte places need booking, and dinner is smart casual (FAQ).

It scores 4.7 out of 5 on Google from 2,381 reviews, 4.8 on Tripadvisor from 5,960 (Tripadvisor) and 9.1 on Booking.com from 1,318, read on 5 October 2026 (Booking.com).

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Kurumba’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of the 10-minute speedboat from the airport, with no seaplane or domestic flight, and of the calm lagoon inside the breakwaters, where children swim too.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of spacious, clean rooms, of bungalows with the beach outside the door and of the open-air bathroom.

  3. Staff and service

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. The staff are praised in almost every review, often by name: the bartenders at Athiri and Kandu and the kids’ club team recur.

  4. Breakfast

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is the buffet at Vihamanaa: guests write of the many choices, from continental to Maldivian.

  5. Price

Those who find it fair say the service and the facilities justify the cost, as do the activities that come with the stay: tennis, kayaking and snorkelling.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 15 November 2025 to 4 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

  • Bandos Maldives
  • Villa Nautica
  • Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa
  • Hard Rock Hotel Maldives
  • Club Med Kani

Questions before you go

Sources read on 4 and 5 October 2026.

How much does a night at Kurumba Maldives cost?

On the Google Hotels calendar, read on 5 October 2026 for 2 adults, a night cost $318 on 16 November 2026, $783 on 30 December and $796 on 2 January 2027, the highest; $417 on 12 January, $677 on 7 February, $294 on 12 May and $291 on 15 August, the lowest. After 18 August 2027 Google no longer showed every price. The minimum and maximum refer to dates with a price in the calendar read on 5 October 2026, rather than a full year.

The calendar gives the hotel’s lowest price for one night taken alone, taxes and fees included. For 7 nights booked together from 16 November 2026, Google listed the lowest seller and the resort’s own listing at $450 a night, read on 12 October 2026. For 16 to 19 November Booking.com asked $432 a night for a Superior Room, taxes included: its booking link came to $1,297.38 for the 3 nights, $373.34 of it taxes; Hotels.com asked $429 and Agoda $482 (Google Hotels). Booking on the site brings sparkling wine, an outing and 20% off the signature treatments (book direct).

The Google prices quoted here already include taxes and fees. The site’s taxes and service-charge clause concerns its direct offers; do not add it again to the Google total.

What restaurants are there at Kurumba?

7: Vihamanaa, the international buffet from 7am to 9.30pm; Thila over the water from 8am to 9.30pm; Japanese Hamakaze, Indian Mahal, Khing Thai and Middle Eastern Al Qasr in the evening; the Café from 11.30am to 10.30pm. The bars are Kandu, until midnight, Athiri and Fez (dining and bars). À la carte needs booking, the evening dress is smart casual, and in-villa dining runs from breakfast in bed to late at night (FAQ).

Which meal plans are there?

Bed and breakfast, half board, full board, all-inclusive and the Dine Around all-inclusive, which covers 7 restaurants, 3 bars, drinks and an excursion (FAQ, the resort). The all-inclusive described on Booking.com leaves out the minibar, premium brands and drinks from other outlets (Booking.com).

How do you get to Kurumba Maldives?

By speedboat from Malé airport in 10 minutes (FAQ). The shared boat costs $60.50 per adult each way, the private one $96.53; children from 2 to 11 pay half (Booking.com).

Does Kurumba have a house reef?

Yes: you swim out to it from the beach, with the marine biologist on guided trips, down to 15 metres, among blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, bannerfish and hawksbill turtles (house reef). In the Google reviews guests praise the snorkelling among sharks and turtles: inside the breakwaters the lagoon is shallow and calm, and the reef begins outside (Google).

Which room or villa should you choose?

As 2, the 74 m² Beachfront Deluxe Bungalow on the sand or the 200 m² Deluxe Pool Villa; with children, the 306 m² 2-storey Family Villa or the 148 m² Two Bedroom Superior Room. The 74 m² Deluxe Bungalows sit in the coconut grove (rooms and villas).

Is Kurumba good for children?

Yes: the kids’ club, World Wide Kids accredited, is open daily for ages 4 to 12; diving is possible from 8 (kids’ club, FAQ). On the family offer, from April to October 2026, children under 12 stay free (family offer). The kids’ club closes at 6pm, as a family noted in July 2026, and for the evening the resort lists a programme of mini karaoke, films and a mini disco (FAQ, Google).

What is the spa like?

The official March 2026 fact sheet lists 8 treatment rooms, a manicure and pedicure room, a relaxation lounge, separate changing rooms and a yoga pavilion (resort fact sheet). It does not list a sauna or steam room, or give a floor area.

It is LIME Wellbeing, its rooms between the water and the gardens (the spa): Aromatherapy Associates oils, Obsidian treatments for men, Margaret Dabbs hand and foot care, a junior menu and the couple’s ritual on the beach (spa). Treatments are charged; booking on the site takes 20% off the signature ones (book direct).

The official menu gives daily opening from 9am to 8pm, advance booking and arrival 15 minutes before treatment. The spa welcomes guests aged 14 and over; younger children may have a gentle facial or massage with a parent. Treatments include service charge and GST (spa menu). The price list gives prices by duration but does not specify a currency; access for visitors staying elsewhere is not documented in the sources read.

Can you hold meetings or weddings?

Yes: the Bougainvillea Hall seats up to 200, the Boardroom 12, and Thila’s deck over the water takes smaller events (meetings and events). Celebrations come with bodu beru drums (official site); prices are not published.

Is Kurumba quiet?

Not entirely: the airport is 4 km away and the planes are heard often, Malé is visible from some beaches, and in the evening the Kandu has live music and DJs (Google, the resort). Many guests still find the island calm and restful.

Is Kurumba Maldives open all year?

Google’s calendar, read on 5 October 2026, had prices for every month from November 2026 to August 2027 (Google Hotels). From 21 December 2026 to 7 January 2027 the festive programme runs (festive season).

This documents availability in the observed period, rather than a full year of opening. A missing calendar price does not prove a closure.

What do guests say about Kurumba Maldives?

Scores are high: 4.7 out of 5 on Google from 2,381 reviews, 4.8 on Tripadvisor from 5,960, 9.1 on Booking.com from 1,318 and 9.4 on Expedia from 950, read on 5 October 2026. The praise goes to the staff, the restaurants and the kids’ club. The planes are often heard, and of the meal plans Dine Around is the one that covers every restaurant (Google, Tripadvisor).

Which pools are there at Kurumba?

The main pool beside Kandu and the Café; private pools in the Garden Pool Villa, Deluxe Pool Villa, Family Villa and Two Bedroom Kurumba Residence (rooms and villas, dining and bars). The Beach Villa has a Jacuzzi in its private garden, as both its page’s highlights and the fact sheet of March 2026 say, read on 15 October 2026 (Beach Villa). The sources read on 5 October 2026 do not publish the main pool’s dimensions or temperature.

What happens at Christmas and New Year at Kurumba?

A Season of Light runs from 21 December 2026 to 7 January 2027: a Christmas Eve gala dinner, Christmas Day lunch and the New Year’s Eve gala A Night at the Circus, with fire shows and fireworks. There are children’s activities, live music and wine and champagne tastings (official programme). The à la carte restaurants close on the Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve gala evenings; some experiences need advance booking and carry extra charges, which the page does not quantify.

Can you arrive by car, and is there parking?

No: Kurumba is an island, reached from Malé airport by speedboat in 10 minutes, and there is no road to it. A walk round the island is 1.65 km on the map.
