Finolhu suits couples and families who want Japanese dinners over the water and music after sunset, with the lowest seller on Google showing $856 for one night for 2 in May 2027. For a holiday built around early, quiet evenings, I would choose a different island.

  1. The villa at sunset

For 2, I would ask for the Ocean Pool Villa: 180 m² with a private freshwater pool and a sunset view. A guest writing in October 2022, on a second stay, calls this category a must.

  2. The lower priced week

The calendar read on 12 October 2026 shows 1–7 May 2027 at $856 for each night searched separately. Its dearest nights shown are 23 and 26–28 December 2026, at $2,239.

  3. Add the seaplane fare

Shared seaplane transfers cost $580 per adult return until 31 October 2026, then $595 from 1 November 2026. Both fares add 10% service and 17% tourism GST: allow for the flight separately when choosing a villa.

  4. Reserve the restaurant evenings

With All Inclusive, stays of 5+ nights include one meal at Crab Shack, Kanusan or Arabian Grill; reservations are advised. Additional dinners there have a non-cumulative $50 credit per adult per day; special dinners and theme nights cost extra.

What Finolhu is

Finolhu opened in June 2016 on 4 islands in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve; in Dhivehi the name means “sandbank”, and the beaches run for 2 km (the island, the resort). Closed from March to November 2020, it was redesigned from scratch (Dreaming of Maldives); it is now part of Seaside Collection. A walk round the shore is 1.5 km on the map (OpenStreetMap).

Its 125 villas stand on the beach, on the lagoon or on stilts, and 79 of them have a pool; the colours are by the London studio Muza Lab (villas). They run from the 145 m² Lagoon Villa to the 735 m² Interconnecting Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa, for 9 adults.

There are 4 restaurants: the Beach Kitchen buffet, Japanese Kanusan on stilts, the Arabian Grill and the Crab Shack on the sandbank, a winner at the 2020 World Luxury Restaurant Awards (dining and bars, the award). With the Beach Club, the Beach Bar, the Pizza Counter and the Milk LAB there are 8 places to eat and drink.

It has 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 648 reviews, 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 4,118 with a Travelers’ Choice 2026 award (Tripadvisor), and 9.5 on Booking.com from 45, read on 5 October 2026 (Booking.com).

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Finolhu’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the island, its white beaches and the sandbank, with the Crab Shack at its far end.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe large, clean, colourful villas, and from the decks of the water villas you step straight into the sea.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The staff are the praise that recurs most: guests name their butlers and remember the waiters and the kids’ club team.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is a buffet at the Beach Kitchen, from 7.30am to 10.30am, by the sea or beside the pool.

  5. Price

At Finolhu the talk of money is about which package to book: some book fewer meals and pay for the rest as they go, others go all-inclusive so that drinks are covered.

The scores come from 207 Google reviews with text, left from 16 November 2020 to 23 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

Price: for two on the night of 1 May 2027, from $856 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

May to August 2027 has single nights from $856, while the priced nights from 23 to 29 December 2026 range from $2,238 to $2,239. I would start with May for the lower price, then compare the quotation for the complete stay.

What is the spa like?

The Fehi Spa sits among gardens, with 10 treatment rooms, saunas, a steam room and a plunge pool separate for women and men, and a salon for hair, nails and make-up (spa offer, spa). There are Swedish and Thai massages, wraps, scrubs and rituals with Natura Bissé products; booking on the site before you arrive saves 10%, except from 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 (spa offer). Prices carry 10% service and GST, and cancelling less than 6 hours ahead costs half the treatment (spa).

The 2024 menu still linked from the site lists opening from 10am to 8pm, advance reservations and arrival 15 minutes early, with another half-hour for the sauna, steam room and pools. The water area welcomes guests aged 12 and above with a parent or guardian; children aged 5 to 12 can take Me & Mum or Me & Dad experiences. Under-18s need approval and supervision (linked official menu).

Fehi Spa’s price list on the site dates from 2024: Balinese, Tibetan and Swedish massages at $150 for 60 minutes and $215 for 90, plus 10% service and GST, 17% since 1 July 2025 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026). What is the pool like?

The main pool is 1.2 metres deep at most, diving in is not allowed and children must be watched (FAQ); the Beach Kitchen has tables beside it (dining) and on Wednesdays at 10.30am there is a free trial dive, on booking (diving). Of the 125 villas, 79 have a private pool (villas); the main pool’s size and temperature are not published.

Can you hold a wedding at Finolhu?

Yes, with 20 or with 100 guests, the resort says: dinner on the sandbank, a ceremony on the beach or photographs by the infinity pool (events). There are 4 packages, Ishgi, Dhaaimee, Hithu Vindhu and Loabiverin, with flowers and settings from simple to lavish (weddings); the site’s pages give no prices. The resort also hosts conferences, business events and cocktail parties (events).

Is Finolhu quiet?

Partly: at the Beach Club you dance on the sand to DJs, the Beach Bar stays open until 1am and every week there is a programme of evenings, from films to theme parties (dining and bars, official site). Many guests find the island relaxing and lively without excess (Google).

Is Finolhu open all year?

The praise goes to the staff, the restaurants, above all the Crab Shack and Kanusan, the villas and the kids’ club. The seaplane, and the drinks and extras outside the meal plan, are charged separately, and in 2025 and 2026 some guests write of a house reef with few big fish (Google, Tripadvisor).

What happens at Christmas and New Year?

Neither the resort’s site nor Booking.com’s conditions, read on 5 October 2026, gave a festive programme for 2026–27 or a gala supplement (official site, Booking.com conditions). For those weeks 2 things are known: the resort’s spa offer suspends its 10% saving on treatments booked ahead from 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, and Google’s calendar, read the same day, had no price for 30 December to 6 January.

Should I hire a car for Finolhu?

I would arrange the island transfer from Malé: the seaplane takes 30 minutes. On the island, Crab Shack is reached by a 20-minute walk across the sandbank or a 5-minute wooden-boat ride.
