Centara Grand suits couples and families choosing between half board, full board and all-inclusive, with the lowest seller on Google showing one night from $740 in early November. For a trip centred on a reef at the villa steps, I would choose an island where that is the main draw.

Water villas with curved white walls, each with its pool and steps down into the lagoon
  1. The villa at sunset

For 2, I would ask for the One-Bedroom Sunset Overwater Pool Villa: 120 m², with a private pool and an outdoor deck facing the setting sun. It makes the evening part of the room.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026, the week of 2–8 November has individual nights from $700 to $740. The highest single night shown is 27 December, at $4,966.

  3. The transfer to add

The compulsory shared speedboat costs $353 per adult return and $176.51 per child return. These fares include the 10% service charge and 17% GST, so both are already within the transfer price.

  4. Book the tandoor table

The tandoor at The Gallery requires an advance reservation for lunch or dinner. I would book a table before settling into the villa; lunch service begins at 12.30pm.

What Centara Grand is

Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives opened on 1 April 2025 (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East) in North Malé Atoll, 24.12 km from Velana airport (official site). It is the quieter, dearer half of The Atollia, the Thai group Centara’s pair of resorts: a bridge links it to Centara Mirage Lagoon, open since November 2024 (Centara), and guests use the restaurants and facilities of both (The Atollia). The site describes the Grand as a refined, tranquil retreat for discerning travellers and multi-generational families, and Mirage as a family island themed on the underwater world, with 145 villas, pools, a lazy river and a water playground.

The island was built up from the lagoon, and its gardens were still young in May 2025 (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East) and in January 2026 (Google). The 142 villas and residences sit over the water and on the beach: from the 78 m² One-Bedroom Overwater Villa with Jacuzzi to the 290 m² Three-Bedroom Sunset Overwater Pool Residence, each with a private pool, a Jacuzzi or both (fact sheet). The water villas are built on a half-moon plan with a snug deck, and some look onto a stone breakwater rather than open sea (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East, May 2025).

On the island you eat at The Gallery, a buffet with a tandoor oven and a teppanyaki grill, at Bluefin, Mediterranean seafood on the beach, at Sunset Social, the overwater bar with catamaran nets, at The Club and at Coco Drift, the swim-up bar; across the bridge are Mirage’s The Sailhouse, Acqua, which is Italian, and Suan Bua, which is Thai (restaurants and bars).

It scores 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 360 reviews and 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 604, read on 5 October 2026: small numbers still, for a resort open 18 months (Google, Tripadvisor). The resort presents itself as the quieter side of The Atollia, yet among Google reviewers who say who they travelled with, 42 of 57 came as families. The staff draw nearly all the praise, often by name; you get about the island by buggy, and between February and August 2026 several guests describe waits of half an hour and more (Google).

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

Centara Grand Lagoon is a resort that opened in 2025 in North Malé Atoll, 30 to 40 minutes by speedboat from Malé: 142 villas with a pool or a Jacuzzi, and a bridge across to Mirage, its family sister.

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

North Malé, 30 to 40 minutes by speedboat: an easy arrival, an atoll less secluded than most.

  2. Character

New since 2025, Thai hospitality; family-minded Mirage across the bridge.

  3. Rooms

78 to 290 m², each with a pool or a Jacuzzi; some face the breakwater.

  4. Food and social life

The Gallery, Bluefin and Sunset Social on the island, 3 more restaurants at Mirage.

  5. Wellness

SPA Cenvaree Retreat in the Thai tradition; prices and hours not published.

  6. The stay as a whole

$774 to $1,683 a night for 2 on Google, roughly twice Mirage’s rate.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Centara Grand’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe the new island, the turquoise water of the lagoon and the sunsets from Sunset Social; Malé is 30 to 40 minutes away by speedboat.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about new, spacious, clean villas with a private pool; from the water villas you climb down to snorkel straight off the deck.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. What recurs is the villa hosts, remembered by name and reachable on WhatsApp, who book dinners, buggies and excursions, and the staff at The Gallery and Bluefin.

  4. Breakfast

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is the buffet at The Gallery, from 7 to 10.30am: guests remember a selection that changes daily, eggs cooked to order and the floating breakfast in the villa’s pool.

  5. Price

5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. The All-Inclusive plan extends lunch and dinner to Mirage’s 3 restaurants and covers wine, beer and a minibar restocked daily; the speedboat transfer costs $353 per adult.

The scores come from 329 Google reviews with text, left from 11 April 2025 to 5 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

Good to know before you book

  • Bluefin and the restaurants at Mirage need booking: guests do it from the day they arrive, through their villa host. Source: 329 Google reviews read, 11 April 2025 to 5 October 2026

  • The speedboat transfer is compulsory: the return trip costs $353 per adult and $176.51 per child, service and GST included; a private boat for up to 8 costs $1,544.40 each way (transfer). Booking.com counts children as 6 to 12 and gives a private boat at $2,252.30 each way, a rate valid until 31 July 2026 (Booking.com).

  • The resort places its house reef 1.27 km away and sells it as a snorkelling trip by boat (experiences). Guests in 2026 describe snorkelling straight from the water villas, with reef sharks and rays beneath the deck (Google).

  • Across the bridge, Mirage is the family resort: a water complex with pools and a lazy river, the kids’ club and the Candy Spa for children aged 4 to 11 (lazy river, Candy Spa). Guests of both islands move freely between them (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East).

  • A Sunset Overwater Pool Villa, a Condé Nast Traveller Middle East writer reported in May 2025, looks onto open ocean; from several other villas a stone breakwater cuts across part of the view (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East).

  • Between the villas and the restaurants you travel on the resort’s buggies, called through the villa host or the front desk: between August 2025 and August 2026, 9 Google reviews describe waits, from 10–20 minutes to half an hour and more, and in August 2026 of up to 1 or 2 hours; 6, in the same period, also describe waits at table and for requests to the villa. In September 44 of 46 reviews gave 5 stars (Google).

  • At Christmas and New Year the gala dinner is compulsory and charged on top: according to Booking.com, on bed and breakfast $445 per adult on Christmas Eve and $725 on New Year’s Eve, on other plans $300 and $550; for children aged 6 to 11, $120 to $300 (Booking.com), which gives no year.

  • Offer rates on the site exclude service charge and tax (official site); Google’s calendar includes them. For direct net quotations, check the final total: Booking.com lists a $12 green tax per person a day collected at the resort, except under 2; do not add it again to Google’s tax-inclusive totals (Booking.com). Every plan, bed and breakfast too, includes non-motorised water sports, snorkelling gear, the gym, the kids’ club, the beach cinema and Wi-Fi (meal plans); boat excursions are charged and their prices are not published (experiences).

A man-made island

Questions before you go

How much does a night at Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives cost?

On the Google Hotels calendar, read on 12 October 2026 for 2 adults, a night cost $774 on 16 November 2026, $803 on 5 December and $1,069 on 21 December; from 22 December to 7 January Google showed no prices. Then $1,683 on 8 January 2027, the dearest night, $1,059 on 11 January, $943 on 10 May, $812 on a few nights from May to July and $864 on 15 August. The figures include taxes; a calendar night names neither the villa nor the meals.

For 16 to 19 November the official site asked $785 a night for a One-Bedroom Overwater Villa with Jacuzzi, Booking.com $976 and Priceline $774 (Google Hotels). The compulsory transfer adds $353 per adult (transfer).

Centara Grand Lagoon or Centara Mirage Lagoon: which should you book?

It depends who is travelling. The Grand is the quieter and dearer of the 2: 142 villas, each with a pool or a Jacuzzi, aimed by the site at discerning travellers and multi-generational families (The Atollia, fact sheet). Mirage is the family resort themed on the underwater world, with 145 villas and a water complex of pools, a lazy river and a water playground (The Atollia).

A bridge joins the 2 islands and guests use both (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East). On Google’s calendar read on 12 October 2026, for 2, Mirage cost $373 on 16 November against the Grand’s $774; $580 against $1,059 on 11 January 2027; $438 against $943 on 10 May (Google Hotels, Mirage, Google Hotels, Grand).

Half board, full board, all-inclusive: what does each include?

The resort sells bed and breakfast, Half Board Plus, Full Board Plus and All-Inclusive (all-inclusive). Half board covers breakfast at The Gallery and dinner from The Gallery’s buffet or a 3-course set menu at Bluefin, with 2 drinks each; full board adds lunch at the same 2 restaurants (half board, full board). All-Inclusive extends lunch and dinner to The Sailhouse, Suan Bua and Acqua, Mirage’s restaurants, and covers wines, beers, a range of cocktails, soft drinks and a minibar restocked daily (all-inclusive).

Every plan leaves out teppanyaki, premium wines and spirits, champagne, in-villa dining, snacks at Coco Drift and private dinners; afternoon tea and sundowners at The Club are included only for guests in the 2- and 3-bedroom villas (all-inclusive). Mirage also sells “The Atollia Destination” plans that cover the restaurants of both islands (Mirage meal plans).

How do you get to Centara Grand Lagoon, and what does the transfer cost?

The transfer is compulsory: shared, return, $353 per adult and $176.51 per child, service and GST included; private for up to 8, $1,544.40 each way (transfer). For bookings and stays until 15 October 2026, with 4 nights or more, an offer on the site made it free for 2 adults (offer).

Does Centara Grand Lagoon have a house reef?

The resort places its house reef 1.27 km from the island and reaches it on a snorkelling trip by boat (experiences). Guests in 2026 describe snorkelling straight from the water villa, with reef sharks and rays beneath the deck (Google). In May 2025 a Condé Nast Traveller Middle East writer went snorkelling straight off her villa steps (Condé Nast Traveller Middle East). Snorkelling gear comes with every plan (meal plans).

Is there a kids’ club at Centara Grand Lagoon? Is it good for children?

Yes. The fact sheet lists a kids’ club, the E-Zone and babysitting on request (fact sheet), and children’s activities run across The Atollia (FAQs); Mirage, across the bridge, has the lazy river, the water complex and the Candy Spa for children aged 4 to 11 (lazy river, Candy Spa). The family villas join 2 connecting villas, for up to 4 adults and 4 children (family villa). The 2 villas have separate entrances and a door between them; in September 2026 a mother with a small child recommended the beach over the water (Google).

Booking.com says children of all ages are welcome and that there are no cots or extra beds (Booking.com). A review site writes that children under 12 may not stay in the water villas (Islandii); the official pages for those villas take children and give no minimum age.

What restaurants are there at Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives?

On the island: The Gallery, a buffet with tandoor and teppanyaki, 7am to 9.30pm; Bluefin, Mediterranean seafood on the beach, at lunch and dinner; Sunset Social, the overwater bar, 3 to 11pm; The Club, 8am to 10pm, for the 2- and 3-bedroom villas; Coco Drift, the swim-up bar, 10am to 11pm; and in-villa dining round the clock (restaurants and bars, The Club).

In May 2025 Condé Nast Traveller Middle East found an indoor-outdoor space with shallow pools and dark, cool treatment rooms (Condé Nast Traveller); no sauna, steam room, size or hours are published. For children there is Mirage’s Candy Spa, for ages 4 to 11 (Candy Spa).

Is spa access included in the rate at Centara Grand Lagoon?

No: treatments are charged, and the published menu gives no prices (spa menu). Half Board Plus, Full Board Plus, All-Inclusive, the Atollia plans and direct bookings carry a $60 spa credit per person per stay, in the offer bookable until 30 September 2026 for stays until 31 December (spa credit). No day pass for guests staying on other islands is published.

Is Centara Grand Lagoon open all year?

Google’s calendar, read on 5 October 2026, priced dates in every month from November 2026 to August 2027, with gaps including 22 December–7 January. No official seasonal opening policy was published on the pages consulted; calendar gaps do not establish a closure (Google Hotels).

Which villa should you choose?

What do guests say about Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives?

Scores are high but the numbers small: 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 360 reviews and 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 604, read on 5 October 2026, for a resort open since April 2025 (Google, Tripadvisor). Nearly all the praise goes to the staff, often named, then to the spa and the restaurants. You get about the island by buggy: between February and August 2026 several guests describe waits of half an hour and more, and in the same months waits at table too (Google).

What is the pool like at Centara Grand Lagoon?
