  1. The villa to ask for

I would ask for the Family Beach Pool Villa, 255 m², with children, or the Over Water Pool Villa, 175 m², as a pair. Returning guests writing in October 2022 and March 2026 stayed in The Crescent, 5 pool villas on a private boardwalk.

  2. The weeks that cost less

The calendar read on 12 October 2026 puts 14 to 20 November at $966 a night, one night taken alone; booked as 7 nights from 16 November, the lowest seller asked $1,135 a night, the resort’s own listing $1,144.

  3. On top of the rate

The seaplane costs $780 per person return, taxes included, half price up to age 11. On half board, dinner is the buffet at Epicure or BLU; a $70 credit per adult covers other restaurants, and some menu items and events carry a supplement.

  4. Bicycles for the islands

Cycle round the islands: 7 guests who wrote between February 2025 and September 2026 mention the bicycles, and 2 of them found one waiting at their villa, personalised.

What Niyama is

The resort opened in 2012 and belongs to Minor Hotels (Minor Hotels). In July 2025 it unveiled THIS IS NIYAMA: every villa and facility refurbished, new restaurants and a new Surf Shack (Minor Hotels, THIS IS NIYAMA). The 134 villas and pavilions sit on 2 islands: Play, livelier, with the surf, the kids’ club and sports, and Chill, calmer, with the spa, the gym and all the overwater villas (official site).

There are 10 ways to eat: Subsix, the underwater restaurant half a kilometre off the tip of Chill, Nest among the branches of a jungle tree, Edge out at sea, Tribal cooking African and Latin American food over fire, and Epicure and BLU for breakfast and buffets (dining, THIS IS NIYAMA).

Vodi, the left-hander off the tip of Play, is a walk and a paddle away; Kasabu, a right-hander for experienced surfers, is a few minutes away by boat (surfing). The Explorers kids’ club takes children from 1 to 11, with a splash park, climbing wall and trampolines (families, THIS IS NIYAMA). Snorkelling means a boat: the outer-reef trip, 10 minutes out, is free (activities).

Guests give it 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 880 reviews, read on 5 October 2026: they praise the staff and butlers, the food and how easy it is with children (Google).

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

How we choose the hotels

Those who come back

Among the hotel’s regulars, 3 guests on a third stay call it a second home or their family’s happy place. A couple writing in September 2026, back after a first stay 4 years earlier, chose Niyama again for their honeymoon. A guest writing in August 2025, who honeymooned here 10 years before, came back with the whole family for the anniversary. A family writing in December 2023, back for a second time that year, was looked after by the same thakuru, the personal butler, both times.

  • 10 of the 461 reviews with text say it is not a first stay
  • From a second stay to a third
  • One guest honeymooned here 10 years before returning

Read across both lists of returning candidates in the 461 reviews with text; only explicit prior stays counted.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Niyama’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Every guest who mentions it is happy with it. 2 islands joined by a bridge in Dhaalu Atoll, Play and Chill, 45 minutes by seaplane: guests write of the thick greenery, the white beaches and the surf break beside the Surf Shack.

  2. Room

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Beach and overwater villas, on Play and on Chill: guests write of the space, the private pool and the bicycles waiting outside the villa.

  3. Staff and service

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Each villa has its thakuru, the butler who books restaurants and activities: guests thank theirs by name, along with the kids’ club team and the man who brings round fresh coconuts every day.

The scores come from 119 Google reviews with text, left from 20 July 2025 to 4 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

Price: for two on the night of 8 November 2026, from $966 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
