The Nautilus deck over the water: white sofas, green cushions and pale parasols facing the sea.
  1. The villa to request

I would ask for an Ocean Signature Villa with Pool + Slide: 150 m² with a private pool, a hammock and a slide into the turquoise water, for 2 adults and 3 children or 3 adults.

  2. The weeks to consider

Consider 16–22 December 2026, when single nights for 2 adults held at $827–$836 on Google, read 12 October 2026; 3–9 November 2026 ranged from $775 to $957. The dearest night shown, 31 December 2026, was $3,069.

  3. What comes on top

The seaplane, booked through the resort, costs $490 per adult and $295 per child, return. Rates exclude a 17% Goods & Services tax, a 10% service charge and a green tax of $12 per guest per day.

  4. Sunset at The Nautilus

The Nautilus, the sand-floored bar, sits between the shore and the lagoon: the resort suggests a drink between dips in the sea and, at golden hour with happy hour under way, its seat for the sunset.

What Sun Siyam Vilu Reef is

Vilu Reef is the first resort the Sun Siyam group's founder opened, in 1998, on the north-eastern tip of South Nilandhe Atoll, which the Maldives call Dhaalu. The 2026 fact sheet counts 153 villas in 10 types, from 78 to 330 m²: 62 on the beach, every one with its own pool, and 91 over the water, 62 of them with a pool. The newest are the 50 Ocean Signature villas, with a slide from the deck straight into the lagoon.

The reason to come is the reef. The fact sheet puts it a few metres from the beach, and guests in 2026 swim out to the drop-off and come back with turtles, eagle rays and reef sharks; the all-inclusive plan lends masks and fins. That plan runs 24 hours: the buffet at The Aqua, set menus at Well Done and The Spice, the bars and the minibar. Of the 500 newest Google reviews with text, 93% of those discussing the location speak well of it, and 96% of those discussing the staff.

The all-inclusive plan has its limits: snacks and in-villa dining are extra, and the resort’s priced events add 10% service and 17% tax. And the island is growing: from December 2025 to August 2026 guests describe building work around the new villas.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

  • Reef at the door

    The first of the guide

Here: the reef starts a few metres off the beach; guests in 2026 swim out to the edge and describe turtles, eagle rays and reef sharks.

Here: the same host looks after your villa for the whole stay and answers on WhatsApp; in the restaurant and bar they call even the children by name from the first day.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Vilu Reef’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The reef begins a few metres from the shore, with sharks, turtles and dolphins, and the island is small enough to walk round: that is what guests write about.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the private pool, the outdoor bathroom, housekeeping twice a day and the new Ocean Signature villas.

  3. Staff and service

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. The reviews keep coming back to the host who looks after each villa throughout the stay, the waiters at The Aqua, the kids’ club and the dive centre.

  4. Breakfast

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is the buffet at The Aqua: guests describe it as generous, with plenty of gluten-free and vegan choices.

  5. Price

5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. The buffet at The Aqua, 3-course set menus at Well Done and The Spice, the bars, the minibar, and mask and fins for a reef a few metres from the shore: that is what the all-inclusive puts in the price.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 19 December 2022 to 2 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Dhaalu Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

What to expect

Pizza at noon and curry at night at The Spice, Ayurveda at the spa and the reef a few strokes from the sand.

The Spice, Well Done and the buffet over the lagoon

The Aqua, on stilts at the start of the water-villa jetty, serves 3 buffets a day, with themed evenings. The Spice is Italian at lunch and Indian at dinner, with a thali every Wednesday; Well Done grills lobster, crab and whole fish on the beach, with a lobster and barbecue night every Saturday. Both need booking, and in September 2026 a family found them full on arrival.

Ayurveda and 4-hand massage

The spa sits inland, near the heart of the island, and blends Eastern traditions with Western therapies: 4-hand, Swedish and Thai massage, an Ayurveda menu, body scrubs and wraps with seaweed, clay, coffee and coconut, and a 7-day journey. Treatments are charged to the villa, service and taxes included; the website links no menu and prints no prices.

The reef a few strokes from the beach

The fact sheet puts the house reef a few metres from the beach. In October 2026 a couple found the edge only a few metres out at the first gate, saw a turtle, eagle rays and reef sharks, and watched dolphins from their water villa; masks, fins and life jackets come with the stay.

Every day on the reef

In October 2026 a couple in a water villa snorkelled every day, entering at the first gate where the reef's edge is a few metres from the shore, and saw a turtle, eagle rays and reef sharks. The à la carte kitchens handled a gluten and dairy intolerance without fuss.

With children of 3 and 6

In August 2026 a family in a beach villa with a pool on the sunset side loved the outdoor bathroom, the Indian dinners at The Spice and a reef easy to reach even with small children, with sharks every day. They walked everywhere in a few minutes.

The Ocean Signature as a family

In July 2026 a family upgraded to an Ocean Signature villa found it superb and safely fenced for a toddler. Their daughter reacted to a dish declared egg-free; the island doctor treated her at no charge. They found the food weak and the 10-minute walk to meals long.

The building work beside the villa

The website publishes no menu or price list. The prices on record are seasonal: in the festive programme for 2026–2027 a 90-minute ritual costs $195 a person, a 60-minute massage $300 a couple, Ayurveda $180 for 60 minutes and $225 for 90, a facial $135 and a back or foot massage $100.

In the October 2026 programme a 60-minute massage for each of 2 costs $200 a couple and one for children $80, both plus 10% service and 17% tax, while the spa page says its prices include them.

Is it good for children?

Yes: the Turtle Kidz Club has a playroom, a nap room, a cinema room, a children's pool and an outdoor area, according to the fact sheet, but serves no meals. Its ages and hours vary by source: 4 to 12, with 9am to 1pm and 2 to 10pm, in the fact sheet; 4 to 12, 9am to 5pm, in the October programme; 3 to 12, 9am to 8pm, in the festive one.

Babysitting costs $25 an hour, according to the meal plan, and the fact sheet offers it for under-3s. The Family offer lets up to 2 children under 12 stay and eat free with 2 paying adults; from 12 they pay as adults, according to Booking.com. In July 2026 a guest found the Ocean Signature villa safely fenced for a toddler, which the standard villas were not.

What is on the island besides the villas?

According to the fact sheet: the SSI dive centre, the water sports centre, a gym, floodlit tennis courts, badminton and table tennis, the spa, the Turtle Kidz Club, souvenir and jewellery shops, an in-house doctor, a resident photographer and free Wi-Fi everywhere. Many ingredients come from the organic farm on the neighbouring island of Lhohi, the destination page says.

Athireege, a Maldivian beach house, serves a traditional breakfast or dinner, at a charge. Priced activities in the October 2026 programme include a first boat dive at $330 a person, a guided Seabob ride at $89 and a sunset jet car at $199 for one or two, plus service and tax. Drones are banned.

What offers are there?

Read on 6 October 2026: Ocean Signature Escape, 40% off the Ocean Signature villas, with the seaplane for 2 from 7 nights, a couples' massage, a floating breakfast and a beach dinner, bookable until 31 October 2026 for stays until 23 December 2027; Free Transfer, the seaplane for 2 from 7 nights and a floating breakfast, for stays until 31 October 2027; Family, 2 children under 12 free; Romantic Honeymoon Escape, the seaplane for 2 from 7 nights or half price from 4, a candlelit dinner and a couples' treatment.

The honeymoon offer asks for a marriage certificate under 12 months old. The family offer adds 10% service, the goods and services tax and the Green Tax to its rates.

Can you get married at Sun Siyam Vilu Reef?

Yes, in a symbolic ceremony: the weddings page offers 2 packages with bodu beru drummers, a champagne toast, a certificate and a coconut tree planting, and a planner, but publishes no prices and does not say whether a marriage there is legally binding.

For groups the 2026 events brochure offers the whole island for a buyout and adapts its 4 restaurants and 2 bars for private events, without giving capacities. The same weddings page asks honeymooners to stay 3 nights for its benefits in one line and 5 in another.

Is there a New Year's Eve dinner?

Yes. The festive programme runs from 22 December 2026 to 7 January 2027; on 31 December the management cocktail is from 6 to 7pm on Aqua Beach, and the New Year's Eve Blossom Gala runs from 7.30pm to 1am on Spice Beach, with dinner, live performances and a glass raised at midnight. The brochure prints no price.

According to Booking.com, read on 3 October 2026, the gala is compulsory: $525 per adult and $265 per child, the first 2 children in a villa free. Christmas Eve's gala dinner at The Aqua is compulsory too, at the same price.

Can you play golf?

No: the fact sheet lists no course and no golf package. The island has floodlit tennis courts, badminton, table tennis, the gym and the water sports centre.

When is it open, and when is the best season?

All year: no official page announces a closure, and the events page lists Golden Week from 1 to 7 October 2026 and the festive season from 22 December 2026 to 7 January 2027. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 114 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price; 27 October and 29 and 30 December showed none, which does not mean the resort was closed.

The website does not describe the weather month by month. In September 2025 a family had one day of rain in 10, and nights from late December to early January cost several times those of mid-October.

How much does a night cost?

On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $418 on 7 October 2026, $476 on 14 October and $1,769 on 25 October, both nights within 3 weeks of the reading, $892 on 3 November, $836 on 20 November, $827 on 12 December, $1,851 on 24 December, $3,382 on 31 December, $1,146 on 12 January 2027 and $1,351 on 29 January 2027. For 7 October the official website asked $519 for a Reef Villa on half board.

The calendar shows the lowest seller and names no villa: for 7 October the lowest was a reseller's, and the website's figure was its cheapest villa and plan. The seaplane and the compulsory gala dinners of 24 and 31 December are extra.

What do the reviews say?

On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.8/5 from 1,653 ratings, Tripadvisor 4.8/5 from 6,721, with a Travellers’ Choice award and first of 12 hotels in Dhaalu Atoll, Booking.com 9.2/10 from 546, with the staff at 9.7 and value for money at 8.8, and Expedia 9/10 from 113.

In the 500 newest Google reviews with text, 93% of those discussing the location and the villas speak well of them, and 96% of those discussing the staff. The same reviews return to the building work, described until August 2026, and to the extras outside the plan, such as excursions, with service and tax on top.

What taxes and charges are added?

The website's rates exclude them: the destination page adds 17% goods and services tax, 10% service charge and a Green Tax of $12 per guest per day. On top come the seaplane and, for stays over 24 and 31 December, the compulsory gala dinners.

Google Hotels prices for the Maldives market include taxes and fees, and the spa page says its prices include service and taxes.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to the destination page and the meal plan; the Free Transfer offer makes early check-in and late check-out subject to availability. Expedia sets a minimum check-in age of 18, Booking.com none.
