  1. The villa to ask for

I would ask for an Ocean Pool Villa: 90 m² over the water, with the house reef beginning just steps from the deck. The Deluxe Ocean Pool Villa offers 120 m² and a 23 m² pool.

  2. The weeks that cost less

Read on 12 October 2026, the calendar shows 7 nights at $1,696 to $1,720 for 2–8 July 2027, and 3 nights at $1,648 for 16–18 December 2026. The dearest week, 11–17 April 2027, runs from $2,174 to $2,878.

  3. Taxes and private dinners

Offer rates are subject to service charge, tourism GST (TGST) and green tax. A private dinner costs $190 a person on the beach, $255 by the villa and $320 on the Moonlight Jetty, service and GST included.

  4. Banzai and Ata Roa seatings

Ata Roa, the Mexican and Peruvian lunch counter over the water, has 2 seatings only and asks guests to reserve ahead; Banzai, the teppanyaki, serves dinner in 2 seatings with limited availability.

What Kandolhu is

Kandolhu was unveiled in 2014, after a $15 million investment, on an island in North Ari Atoll with 30 villas (2014 release); it belongs to Universal Resorts, like Milaidhoo and Baros. The island measures 150 by 200 metres, about 70 km south-west of Malé (FAQ).

The villas come in 5 kinds: Beach Villas of 85 m², the only ones without a pool; Pool Villas and Duplex Pool Villas of 150 m² on the beach; over the water, Ocean Pool Villas of 90 m² and Deluxe Ocean Pool Villas of 120 m², renovated in 2025 with a 23 m² pool (FAQ, Deluxe Ocean Pool Villa, 2025 release).

For an island of 30 villas there are 5 restaurants, The Market, Olive, Sea Grill, Banzai and Ata Roa, plus Vilu Bar (FAQ). The reef rings the island and is reached from the beach through snorkelling channels: turtles, sharks, eagle rays and anemones a few metres from shore (FAQ).

It scores 4.9 out of 5 on Google from 231 reviews and 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 1,402, with Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2026 (Google Hotels, Tripadvisor); in 2025 Condé Nast Traveler readers voted it among the top Indian Ocean resorts (release).

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Kandolhu’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. The island is tiny, with beach all the way round and the reef a few metres out, where guests see turtles, sharks and rays.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The villas are praised for cleanliness, views and privacy, the duplexes and water villas above all.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The staff are the most frequent praise: the welcome on the jetty, the dive centre and waiters remembered by name.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is ordered from a menu at The Market, with eggs and omelettes as you like them, beside a small buffet of bread and croissants.

  5. Price

Guests who write about the price point to Ultimate Inclusions, with the wine fridge in the villa restocked daily and dishes from every restaurant’s menu.

The scores come from 160 Google reviews with text, left from 9 October 2014 to 1 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

  • Milaidhoo Maldives
  • Anantara Kihavah
  • Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
  • Kudadoo Maldives Private Island

Price: for two on the night of 16 December 2026, from $1,648 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

Restaurants, spa and the all-inclusive

The reef is exceptional, one guest writes, but it does not make up for the management: long waits at the restaurants, a careless spa and an all-inclusive that did not convince him. 3 stars.
