A water villa on its stilts, seen from the sea, with the island’s palms behind
  1. The villa to ask for

I would ask for the One Bedroom Water Pool Villa: 170 m², floor-to-ceiling windows and a private 6.2-metre pool. The resort says its Water Pool Villas offer the highest degree of privacy, being further out in the lagoon.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026 the lowest week runs from 2 to 8 November 2026: all 7 nights at $2,291. The dearest, from 29 April to 5 May 2027, costs $4,551 to $4,554 a night.

  3. On top of the rate

Purchases at the resort carry a 10% service charge and 17% TGST, the tourism goods and services tax. An additional guest in the villa costs $240 a night, exclusive of taxes.

  4. A free boat to the Ritz-Carlton

Guests can reach the Ritz-Carlton in the same lagoon: the boat between them is complimentary, but a restaurant reservation at the Ritz-Carlton is required to visit.

What Patina is

Patina opened in May 2021 as the first resort of Patina Hotels & Resorts, the Capella Hotel Group’s brand, on one of the 4 Fari Islands (resort press release). The island covers 42 hectares (official site) and holds 90 beach and water villas and 20 Fari Studios (resort fact sheet). Condé Nast Traveller recommends it for couples and notes it is the first hotel Marcio Kogan designed (Condé Nast Traveller).

The beach villas have 240 m², a garden and a 6.2-metre pool; the water villas 170 m², glass on 3 sides and a pool of the same length (Beach Pool Villa, Water Pool Villa). Families have the 2-bedroom villas, of 405 and 600 m², and the 1,800 m² Beach House with its 21-metre pool (Two Bedroom Water Pool Villa, Two Bedroom Beach Pool Villa, Beach House).

The site lists 10 places to eat and drink, from Portico, open all day, to Wok Society, Brasa, KANDU, Helios, Farine and the food trucks of Fari Marina Village (restaurants). The marina village is shared with the Ritz-Carlton on the next island, a guest wrote in April 2026 (Google); a free boat runs to the Ritz-Carlton’s restaurants, by reservation (FAQ).

It has 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 292 reviews and 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 2,185, with Travelers’ Choice 2026 (Google Hotels, Tripadvisor); Forbes Travel Guide gave it 5 stars for 2026 (the resort). The meal plans cover food only, and resort purchases carry 10% service and 17% TGST (FAQ).

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

North Malé Atoll, 45 minutes by speedboat; the Ritz-Carlton next door; the reef to the north-west.

  2. Character

Marcio Kogan’s architecture, Turrell’s Skyspace, opened in 2021.

  3. Rooms

90 pool villas, from 170 to 1,800 m², and 20 studios of 60 m².

  4. Food and social life

10 or so places to eat, from the wok to a Patagonian grill; food-only meal plans.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

  • Gentle giants

Here: manta rays all year on both sides of North Malé Atoll, with the resort’s marine biologists; for South Ari’s whale sharks you leave by private seaplane.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Patina’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe the island’s modern architecture set in greenery, the lagoon and the sunsets.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe spacious, private, well-designed villas, on the beach and over the water alike, each with its own pool.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Service runs through the Essentialist, the person assigned to each villa who books restaurants and activities: guests name theirs, as they do the waiters at Portico and Wok Society.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is a buffet at Portico, with Maldivian, Asian, Indian and European dishes and a menu alongside: what guests remember is the choice.

  5. Price

Meal plans cover food only and service and taxes are added to purchases; up to 2 children under 12 stay and eat free, and the kids’ club is free.

The scores come from 222 Google reviews with text, left from 15 February 2021 to 4 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:
