The Conrad suits couples and families who want a Maldives with plenty in it: a restaurant under the sea, a reef off the beach and, from mid-May, nights from $863, about half February’s price. Anyone picturing one small island and a bill settled before leaving home will be happier at a smaller resort.

A seaplane on the water at sunset, the water villas on the horizon
  1. The villa to ask for

For two, a water villa on the sunset side, such as the Sunset Water Villa with Pool. For space I would ask for the Deluxe Beach Villa with Pool: 300 m², twice the smallest Beach Villa, and the one 2 returning guests choose or recommend.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026 the lowest runs from 30 August to 5 September 2027: 7 nights at $863. At New Year every night costs $2,466.

  3. On top of the rate

Add the seaplane: $700 per adult return, 25% less with the half-board Maldivian Getaway offer from 3 nights, New Year excepted. Extras carry 10% service and 17% GST.

  4. After dinner, on the bridge

Walk onto the bridge between the islands: 7 guests since 2018 write of manta rays beneath it at night, one at around 9pm.

What the Conrad is

It opened in 1997 as the Hilton Maldives, the first internationally branded resort in the Maldives, and became a Conrad in December 2007; a 500-metre bridge links its 2 islands (our story). The beach villas are on the family island, the water villas mostly on the other (villa fact sheet).

Ithaa, opened on 15 April 2005, was the world’s first undersea restaurant: 5 metres below the surface, 14 seats per service (our story, Ithaa). The Muraka, opened in 2018, puts its master bedroom under a glass dome 5 metres down (the Muraka, Wikipedia).

Beyond Ithaa there are KOKO, teppanyaki by the sea, Ufaa, Chinese, Vilu, Italian, Mandhoo over the water, the Sunset Grill and a cellar 2 metres beneath the sand with 18,000 bottles (dining). The dive centre goes to South Ari’s whale sharks, there all year, and to mantas an hour away by boat (dive centre).

On Google it has 4.8 out of 5 from 1,239 reviews (Google). Some of the water villas have been refurbished, guests have written since 2022 (Google); from 1 July to 11 October 2026 the Spa Retreat, Mandhoo, the Grand Water Villas and the Muraka were under works (official site).

Lumina Guide 2027

Gives more than the other hotels of its place and price range.

The Conrad has the world’s first undersea restaurant, Ithaa, and the Muraka, a residence with a bedroom 5 metres under the sea, on 2 South Ari islands joined by a 500-metre bridge.

  • Ours

Opened in 1997, it was the first internationally branded resort in the Maldives; we found villas from 86 to 668 m², a cellar of 18,000 bottles beneath the sand and an overwater spa with glass floors.

Those who come back

Among the Conrad’s regulars, 9 put the staff before everything else, 3 name the same yoga teacher and 2 were given the island host they had before. They notice what changes: 2 write of refurbished villas, and one, on a fifth visit, lists electric bicycles free to borrow and a new art club. A family who wrote in May 2026, back after a first stay in February, found the islands quieter and the wind strong enough to cancel most boat trips: they advise taking the excursions early. And a guest on a second stay, writing in March 2026, warns that with the Ultimate Rangali package many main courses at Mandhoo still carry a supplement: $16 on a $48 chicken dish.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Conrad Maldives’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests write about the 2 islands joined by the bridge, the white beaches, the house reef and the whale sharks and mantas of the boat trips.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe large villas, made up twice a day, the lagoon and sunset views from the water villas and the private pool of those that have one.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Staff are named in a great many reviews: the island host who looks after guests from arrival, the housekeepers, the buggy drivers.

  4. Breakfast

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the buffet at Atoll Market, with Maldivian, Indian and Asian dishes beside the pastries, and the quieter breakfast at Vilu.

  5. Price

On top of the rate come the seaplane, service and taxes; guests who write about the bill mention restaurant and excursion prices and, among the things they paid for, remember Ithaa, the undersea restaurant.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 5 March 2021 to 1 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 5 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

Price: for two on the night of 11 May 2027, from $938 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

On 12 October 2026 Google showed nights for 2 from $863 from mid-May 2027, and $2,466 every night from 21 December to 9 January. On 4 October there were 51 nights at $863; 8 days later, on the same dates, 21 were left and none had gone lower: for a low-season stay I would book when the calendar shows that figure.

The calendar ran to 7 September 2027; a calendar night does not name the villa.

On 4 October 2026, for 16 to 19 November, the resort’s own site asked $1,088 a night for the Beach Villa, with service, GST and green tax included (Google Hotels). Add the seaplane at $700 per adult (getting here).

How do you get to the Conrad Maldives?

By seaplane from Malé, 30 minutes, 6am to 3.30pm: $700 per adult return, half price under 12. The transfer is compulsory and not in the rate; by yacht it takes 4 to 5 hours and $3,000 each way (getting here).

Where is the Conrad, and is it quiet?

On 2 islands of South Ari Atoll, south-west of Malé and 30 minutes away by seaplane (getting here): Rangali Finolhu, the lively island that takes children of every age, and Rangali, the quieter island of water villas, joined by a 500-metre bridge (our story). Of the 500 Google reviews read on 4 October 2026, 8 praise the quiet between villas and none mentions noise from neighbours (Google).

Can you dine at Ithaa? How far ahead should you book?

Yes: Ithaa serves breakfast from 8 to 9.30am, opens for visits from 11am to noon, and serves lunch from 12.30pm and dinner from 6.30pm, with 14 seats per service (Ithaa). With so few seats, book before you arrive.

Can you sleep underwater at the Conrad?

Yes, in the Muraka: 3 bedrooms, the master 5 metres under the sea beneath a glass dome, with a butler at any hour (the Muraka). The page on the Maldives underwater hotel compares it with the other ways to be under the sea.

Can you see whale sharks?

Yes: South Ari Atoll is one of the few places where they live all year, and the resort’s dive centre runs the trips with a talk by its marine biologists (dive centre).

Is the Conrad good for children?

Yes, on the beach island: kids’ and teens’ clubs, family villas and the Island Family Retreat, with up to 2 children under 12 free (family offer). The water villas on Rangali island take no children under 16, except the Ocean Pavilion (Booking.com).

Which villa should you book?

As 2, a water villa on the sunset side, from the 86 m² Sunset Water Villa with Pool to the 152 m² Premier (water villas). As a family, the 300 m² Family Beach Villa or the 668 m² 3 Bedroom Beach Suite (beach villas).

What restaurants are there?

Ithaa under the sea; KOKO, teppanyaki; Ufaa, Chinese; Vilu, Italian; Mandhoo over the water; the Sunset Grill; Atoll Market for breakfast; the underground cellar; Aaraha for Champagne; the Cheese & Wine Bar and the Rantheli Beach Club, adults-only (dining).

Is there an all-inclusive plan?

There is the Ultimate Rangali Experience: it covers meals at many restaurants, while Ithaa, KOKO, the cellar and the barbecues become a credit of $145 per adult and $75 from 6 to 11 (Ultimate Rangali Experience).

Is the Conrad open all year? When should you go?

The resort publishes no seasonal closure; the whale sharks are there all year (dive centre). From 1 July to 11 October 2026 some areas were under works (official site), and Google’s calendar, read on 12 October 2026, ran to 7 September 2027 (Google Hotels).

What happens at New Year?

The night of 31 December 2026 carries a compulsory supplement of $1,093.95 per adult, taxes included, with the gala; half from 6 to 11 (getting here).

Can you get married at the Conrad Maldives?

Yes, with a blessing ceremony: in the Maldives it is not a legal marriage. Every package includes a spa treatment for the couple, the cake, decorations, a photographer and a romantic dinner on the beach; the ceremony takes place under a beach gazebo or at the Quiet Zone Pool (weddings). Prices are not published.

What is the spa like?

There are 2. The overwater spa, opened in 2004, was the world’s first with glass-floored treatment rooms (our story); the Spa Retreat, also on the lagoon, has its own restaurant, Mandhoo, and the resort offers private steam and hydrotherapy (wellness). The Spa Retreat was under works from 1 July to 11 October 2026 (official site); during the works treatments were at the overwater spa (wellness). The price list suggests the sauna and steam room before a treatment (spa price list); the 2 gyms, one on each island, are open 24 hours (fitness). The number of treatment rooms is not published.

What are the pools like?

The main pool, beside Rangali Bar, opens onto the lagoon (dining); on Rangali island the Rantheli pool takes no children under 16 (Booking.com), and the Quiet Zone has a pool of its own, also used for weddings (weddings). Travel + Leisure’s 2026 Asia Pacific awards rank the resort’s pool second in the Maldives (awards). Every villa with “with Pool” in its name has a private one, with an infinity edge over the water; the 3 Bedroom Beach Suite has several lap pools (water villas, the suite). No source gives the pools’ sizes.

Is the spa included? Can outside guests use it?

Treatments are charged: the Spa Retreat’s price list gives the 60-minute Conrad Custom Massage at $215, and under-12s need an adult (spa price list). No day pass for visitors is published.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in from 3pm and check-out by noon (Booking.com).

What do guests say?

Scores are high: 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 1,239 reviews and 4.7 on Tripadvisor from 3,601. The praise goes to the staff, Ithaa, the snorkelling and the cellar. The reviews also come back to the price of extras, which carry 10% service and 17% GST, and to rooms not yet refurbished; the wait for the seaplane is spent in the resort’s lounge at the airport (Google, Tripadvisor).

Do you need a car or parking at the Conrad?

No. You reach the Conrad by seaplane from Velana airport, in 30 minutes, or by yacht, in about 4 to 5 hours (getting here), and a 500-metre bridge links its 2 islands (our story): a car and parking play no part in the stay.
