I’d see London in January: a 4-star costs £119 a night for 2, against £216 and £221 in June and July, the months of Wimbledon1. A 5-star goes from £336 in January to £514 in December, with November just below.

Where I’d sleep in London: 4 hotels from the guide

From Claridge’s you walk Mayfair, with Bond Street 4 minutes away, and every night it sells includes the spa, the pool and a mini-bar of British treats.

The Langham sits at the top of Regent Street, which starts at the door. For a long stay I’d ask straight away for more room than the 28 m² Classic.

At the Connaught you could skip going out in the evening altogether: there are 3 restaurants and 3 bars to choose from.

The Ritz is the big London occasion. If you picture afternoons in a dressing gown, you’ll be happier elsewhere.

The first full one, 3 to 9 January: £112 a night at a 4-star.

What the figure includes

A typical night is the middle hotel: half cost more, half less. Each price is the lowest any seller showed for one night for 2 adults, with taxes and fees as that seller lists them. For the night of 19 May 2027 the big agencies asked about 23% and 13% more than the lowest seller, at a 4-star and a 5-star. Ask which room it buys and whether you can cancel.
