Splendido suits those who want Portofino laid out below them: terraced gardens, a heated saltwater pool facing the gulf and Italy’s first Dior Spa, open until 1 November 2026 and again from 5 March 2027. Anyone who wants the sea at the door will be happier elsewhere: there is no beach, and the way back up from the village is uphill.

Our verdict

A Premium Room: the white bed in front, French windows open onto the terrace and the headland over the bay.

Splendido, known until recently as Belmond Hotel Splendido, fills a former Benedictine monastery on the hill above the village, at Salita Baratta 16. In the 19th century Baron Baratta made it his family’s summer house, the official site says; it has been a hotel since the early 1900s, and the MICHELIN Guide recalls that the Duke of Windsor was the first to sign the guest book.

After 3 years of restoration by Martin Brudnizki’s studio the hotel reopened on 7 June 2025 with redesigned rooms, Genoese terrazzo floors and Albisola ceramics, the new Baratta Sedici bar and the Dior Spa in the garden. The MICHELIN Guide gives it 3 Keys, and in 2026 it stands 60th on the extended World’s 50 Best Hotels list.

Price and the hill are the 2 sums to do. On the official site, on 8 October 2026, a night for 2 ran from €1,045 on 1 November to €5,070 on 17 July 2027, with taxes and breakfast. The sea lies below: the hotel has no beach, and Paraggi bay is 24 minutes away on foot.

The scores come from 57 Google reviews with text, left from 18 June 2025 to 7 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay on the Portofino coast: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 8 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against on the Portofino coast:

  • Splendido Mare, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino
  • Hotel Piccolo Portofino
  • Eight Hotel Portofino
  • Grand Hotel Miramare
  • Imperiale Palace Hotel

Questions before you go

What people ask before booking Splendido, answered from the sources read on 7 and 8 October 2026.

What kind of hotel is Splendido, and what was it called before?

A seasonal 5-star of 53 rooms and suites, 48 plus 5 Signature Suites, according to the official page, with Villa Beatrice besides. It belongs to Belmond, and the site now calls it «Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino»: the old name, Belmond Hotel Splendido, survives in the MICHELIN Guide’s address and in the booking engine.

The building was a Benedictine monastery, turned in the 19th century into Baron Baratta’s summer residence. As a hotel the MICHELIN Guide dates it from 1901, when the Duke of Windsor was first to sign the guest book; Vogue writes 1902. It reopened on 7 June 2025 after Martin Brudnizki’s restoration, according to The Hotel Trotter, and holds 3 MICHELIN Keys.

When is Splendido open?

Until the night of 1 November 2026, then it shuts for the winter. The notice on the official site reads: closed for the season from 2 November 2026, reopening on 5 March 2027. The booking engine, read on 8 October 2026, agrees: it returned no room for 2 November or for 4 March, and rooms for 5 March.

The Google Hotels card nevertheless showed prices for 15 nights between 2 November and 2 January, from €560 to €1,660. They are in all likelihood those of Splendido Mare, the sister hotel on the Piazzetta, open until 6 January according to its own site: for 2 January Google gave €1,660 and the Mare’s engine €1,650. Hotels for Kings describes a season from late March to October: in 2027 it starts earlier.

How much does a night at Splendido cost?

Google Hotels, read on 7 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes included: €1,660 on 14 October 2026 and €1,605 on 20 October. The official booking engine, read on 8 October 2026, asked the same totals for those nights and €1,045 for 1 November, the last night of the season; at the reopening €1,220 on 5 March 2027, €2,430 on 15 May and €5,070 on 17 July.

These are each night’s lowest rates, with breakfast: in spring and autumn nearly always for a Heritage Garden View room, from June to September for the Baratta Junior Suite, the cheapest category the site had on sale (€4,630 on 19 June, €4,960 on 14 August, €3,970 on 18 September). For 24 October 2026 Google’s card showed €1,286 against the site’s €1,440.

Are taxes included in the price?

In Google Hotels’ figures, yes: for 8 October the card’s link to the official site carried €2,210 in all, €210 of it tax. The booking engine keeps the 2 apart: for 20 October a rate of €1,450 and €155 of tax, for 1 November €950 and €95, with no service charge on top.

The sources read do not split the tax between VAT and the local tourist tax. Every total on this page includes it.

Which rooms and suites are there, and how big are they?

16 types, according to the official booking page. There are 2 rooms: the Heritage Garden View, 22 to 39 m² over the garden, and the Premium Room, 29 to 33 m² with a 22 m² balcony or terrace over the gulf. The junior suites number 5, from 39 to 61 m²; the one-bedroom suites 4, from 48 to 78 m².

The 5 Signature Suites run from the 50 m² San Giorgio to the 127 m² La Dolce Vita, above the pool, and come with round-trip transfers, a dedicated host, the in-suite bar and laundry. The site speaks of Signature Suites of «55–127 m²», yet the San Giorgio and Flora listings give 50 and 54 m².

Where is it, and how far from the Piazzetta?

At Salita Baratta 16, on the hill above Portofino, inside the park, according to the official page; Google lists it as Viale Baratta 16. From the door to the Piazzetta it is 814 metres and 11 minutes on foot downhill, computed on 8 October 2026 on OpenStreetMap’s roads; a second router gives 1,042 metres and 15 minutes.

The figures vary from page to page: the FAQ says 10 to 15 minutes, the location page 20 minutes from the marina, Google 1 km. The way back is uphill, and more than one guest prefers the shuttle.

What can you reach on foot?

From the hotel, on OpenStreetMap’s roads: Splendido Mare on the Piazzetta in 11 minutes, the church of San Giorgio in 14, Castello Brown in 17, the lighthouse in 25 and Paraggi bay in 24. The second router adds 4 to 9 minutes to each.

Each week the hotel runs 2 free guided walks, at 9am on Thursdays and Fridays, according to its list of included activities. The experiences to book include a walk to the lighthouse by way of San Giorgio and Castello Brown, and a tour of the park towards San Fruttuoso of about 2 hours.

Can you arrive by car? Is there parking?

Yes. The site’s FAQ says you drive up to the entrance and that valet parking is complimentary for guests; the booking engine lists parking among what every stay includes. Google also notes electric-car charging.

Portofino is pedestrian, the site points out, so a reserved space on the hill matters to anyone travelling by car. Diners arriving by car pass the entrance gate.

How does the shuttle to the village work?

It is free and links the hotel with the Piazzetta, where Splendido Mare stands, regularly through the day, according to the FAQ; the site publishes no timetable and refers guests to the concierge. The booking engine calls it a «scheduled shuttle».

It is for people staying at the hotel: residents come first, and anyone who has come up only for the bar or the restaurant may have to wait. Google’s card mentions a «beach shuttle»; the official pages name only the one to the Piazzetta.

How do you get there from the airports and by train?

The nearest airport is Genoa: 46 km, 47 to 61 minutes by car on the routes computed on 8 October 2026. The site says 45 minutes on its location page, an hour on its home page and 50 minutes in its wedding factsheet. Pisa is 153 km away: 2 hours on the first router, 2 hours 40 minutes on the second.

By train the stop is Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino, 5,856 metres away: 9 to 14 minutes by car, 15 by the hotel’s count. The concierge arranges private transfers from airports and stations; in the Signature Suites the round trip is included.

Is there a beach? How do you get to the sea?

No, the hotel has no beach. The FAQ is plain about it: no beach club, because of the hillside setting; there is the seawater pool, and the concierge arranges visits to nearby beaches and private lidos.

The nearest is Paraggi bay, 1,798 metres away: 24 minutes on foot on the first router, 29 on the other. Booking.com puts the nearest beach at 0.6 miles, and a family in August 2026 mentions a day «at the beach club» without saying which. The other way is by boat: the concierge organises private or group trips to hidden coves, San Fruttuoso and the Cinque Terre.

What is the pool like?

There is one, outdoors: heated, saltwater, with shaded loungers and towels supplied, according to the hotel’s official factsheet. It lies among the terraced gardens, its infinity edge turned towards the headland; Splendido Grill and the pool bar are beside it.

The site does not give its dimensions. Google adds a hot tub, which the official pages read do not mention; Villa Beatrice has a pool of its own.

Is the pool heated? Can non-residents use it?

It is heated, though neither its temperature nor its hours are published. Access is kept for registered guests, like the tennis court, says the FAQ: only in certain cases, and when there is room, will the hotel consider day access, to be asked for directly.

During the closure, from 2 November 2026 to 5 March 2027, the pool shuts with the hotel.

Where do you eat at Splendido?

In 2 restaurants and a bar, according to the official page. La Terrazza serves Ligurian cooking daily: breakfast from 7.30am to 11am, lunch from 1pm to 2.15pm, dinner from 7.30pm to 10.15pm. Splendido Grill, by the pool, does wood-fired pizzas and pastas at lunch, from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, and at dinner.

On the autumn 2026 dinner menu La Terrazza’s dishes cost €36 to €58, on the lunch menu €35 to €65. The FAQ gives slightly different hours: dinner until 10.30pm and poolside lunch until 3pm. Booking.com counts 3 restaurants; the site 2, plus Baratta Sedici and the pool bar.

Is breakfast included?

Yes, in the rates read on the official site, which are called «Room with Breakfast»; the booking engine describes it as a daily à la carte breakfast. It is served at La Terrazza from 7.30am to 11am.

Guests tell it differently: in October 2026 a review speaks of a buffet that leaves you speechless, and Booking.com of an American buffet. On the hotel’s booking pages, read on 15 October 2026, a daily à la carte breakfast is among what “All Stays Include”, so Google’s extra-charge entry is wrong.

What is the spa like?

It is Dior Spa Splendido, the first Dior Spa in Italy, in the gardens above the bay: 4 indoor treatment rooms, one of them double, 2 double open-air gazebos in Le Jardin des Rêves Dior, a lounge terrace and the boutique. The gym is open 24 hours, and yoga is held in the gardens.

Neither the official pages nor the treatment menu mention a sauna, a steam room or pools: this is a treatment spa. Google lists a sauna and Booking.com a sauna and a Turkish bath, with no further detail.

Is the spa included? Can non-residents come?

Treatments are paid for separately; the stay includes the gym and the weekly activities, according to the booking engine. The suite offers add a credit: €300 for the spa in the The Suite Life package.

The site publishes no day pass for the spa. For the pool and tennis the FAQ says access belongs to guests and that outside access is considered case by case; treatments are booked by writing to or phoning the spa.

What are the spa’s hours, and do you need to book?

Daily from 10am to 8pm, according to the spa’s page. The treatment menu recommends arriving 15 minutes early and asks for 24 hours’ notice to cancel without paying for the treatment in full.

The hotel advises booking the spa, the restaurants, tennis and boat trips in advance, above all in high season.

Which treatments are offered, and what do they cost?

From the price list on the official page: the New Look, Constellation and D-Tissue massages at €280 for 60 minutes and €340 for 90; the Kobi-Dior facial at €290 for 60 minutes; the SplendiDior ritual at €450 for 90 minutes and Golden Aura at €520. Short treatments of 15 to 30 minutes cost €90 to €150.

The menu’s programmes for 2 reach €1,500 for a morning of yoga, breakfast and massage and €5,000 for an evening with dinner over the bay. A hairdresser is available on request.
