The Shiseido spa
On the sixth and seventh floors, from hot to ice-cold: sauna, steam room, Himalayan salt room, ice room and 5 cabins for Shiseido treatments.
Step off the train at Milano Centrale, cross the square and 3 minutes later you are at Excelsior Hotel Gallia, in its 1932 Art Deco palace. 7 floors up you swim beneath a skylight, and the station becomes the view with your aperitivo.
The Gallia suits a Milan stay built around the spa, from €350 for one night for 2 adults in January 2027, the lowest any seller showed on Google. For days spent walking between the Duomo and Brera, I would choose a more central address.
A hotel near Milano Centrale: the entrance 3 minutes away, the platforms one floor upWould you go?
Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
I would ask for the 54 m² Panoramic Suite for its floor-to-ceiling windows facing the station; a guest writing in July 2026 singled out its terrace.
On 13 October 2026, Google showed 4–10 January 2027 at €350–€362 per night, each night searched separately for 2 adults. Its dearest priced nights reached €923 in September 2027.
For a stay with a car, allow €50 a day for on-site self-parking, in addition to the room rate. The hotel also lists off-site parking at International Parking on Via Luigi Galvani.
The hotel recommends booking its complimentary shuttle with the doorman; it runs to Piazza della Scala from 9am to 8.20pm. The journey takes about 10–15 minutes, with pick-up and drop-off times subject to traffic.
The Gallia opened in 1932 for people stepping off trains, and it still does that job: your case crosses the square and 3 minutes later you are at the door. The rest of the trip happens upstairs, between a pool under a skylight and a terrace from which the station looks like another building. If your Milan starts at the Duomo, though, factor in the metro or the shuttle.
The reason to choose it is on the sixth and seventh floors: the 1,000 m² of the Gallia Health Club and Shiseido spa, with a covered pool under a skylight, a whirlpool, a sauna, a steam room, a Himalayan salt room and a Technogym gym that never closes for hotel guests. The pool, whirlpool and gym come with the room; treatments are extra, from €170 for a 50-minute massage. The sauna and steam room come with the room too, whenever the spa is open, according to Marriott’s page for the hotel, read on 15 October 2026; the spa charges an entrance fee only to guests not staying at the hotel. The same floor holds Terrazza Gallia, a restaurant with 2 forks from Gambero Rosso, and its bar over the square.
The station decides the rest. Many rooms look over Piazza Duca d’Aosta and the facade of Milano Centrale; the M2 and M3 metro is a minute away, and the free shuttle drops you outside La Scala in 10–15 minutes. On foot, the Duomo is 39 minutes away. Guests praise the staff, the spa, breakfast and the seventh-floor terrace; anyone who wants to walk out towards the Duomo will be happier in a hotel in the centre, as what lies outside the door is a station square.
We started with 2,000 of the Gallia’s Google reviews, 999 of them with text, gathered on 27 September 2026 along with 34 YouTube videos, 48 Instagram posts, 35 press articles and 8 pages of the official site. Somewhere in the pile was a Maserati. 8 reviews from 2019 describe the car that drove guests into town; in October 2021 a guest wrote that the fleet had been withdrawn, because of Covid, and in August 2026 another called the shuttle a small 6-seater van. The ride into the centre comes up in 58 reviews, 44 of them 5-star.

Ours (exceptional)
We found Marco Piva’s glass wing, the cascade chandelier down the period staircase, more than 500 works of art and, on the seventh floor, Terrazza Gallia with its 2 Gambero Rosso forks.
Among the hotel's regulars, 2 describe breakfasts with pastries and egg dishes. A guest writing in November 2023 describes fresh coffee and drinks served on request. Another, writing in July 2024, values the spa after meetings. For a traveller writing in May 2019, proximity to the station makes day trips to Venice or Florence easy.
All 747 reviews with text were searched; both lists of return candidates were read. Dates refer to when guests wrote.
What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.
3 minutes on foot from the entrance of Milano Centrale, one from the metro; but the Duomo is a 39-minute walk, so the centre means metro, taxi or shuttle.
A 1932 Art Deco palace with a glass wing by Marco Piva, a room under the original dome, the cascade chandelier down the period staircase and more than 500 works of art.
From 26 m² for a Premium to the Katara Royal Suite’s 1,000, with marble bathrooms; many look over Piazza Duca d’Aosta and the facade of Milano Centrale.
Terrazza Gallia on the seventh floor, with 2 Gambero Rosso forks and a place in the MICHELIN Guide; the breakfast buffet costs €45 when the rate leaves it out.
A 1,000 m² Shiseido spa; the covered pool, the whirlpool and a gym open round the clock all come with the room.
The 5-star to book if you travel by train and want a real spa in Milan; less suited to those who want to walk out to the Duomo.
A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.
Here: a 1,000 m² Shiseido spa, with the pool on the seventh floor, a salt room and a Private Spa Suite for 2 with whirlpool bath, sauna and steam room.
83 of the 98 guests who write about the spa are pleased. 28 hotels of 335 hold it.
Every hotel with this badgeWhat do Gallia’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about Milano Centrale across the square, the metro a minute from the door and the free shuttle that runs to Piazza della Scala.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about large rooms that stay quiet with the station just outside, and about comfortable beds; many look over Piazza Duca d’Aosta and the facade of Milano Centrale.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember the concierge and the front-desk staff by name, and after the staff they praise the seventh-floor terrace, with its bar looking over Milano Centrale.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. At breakfast in the Gallia Restaurant guests write of the buffet, the pastries, the eggs cooked to order and the cappuccino, and remember the waiters by name.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 3 January 2023 to 26 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Milan: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in Milan:
Price: for two on the night of 7 January 2027, from €350 (seen on Google Hotels on 13 October 2026).

I would compare January with summer before choosing dates; for 7 November 2026, a separate reading on 27 September 2026 showed €290 from the lowest seller and €363 on the hotel’s own listing.

3 couples and 2 families, between August and September 2026: 5 guests, for better and worse.
Arriving off an overnight flight, they were given their room early: spacious, surprisingly quiet, with a balcony on the station that was worth choosing. The shuttle to the centre always ran on time.
With the family in August: excellent service and spa, but the fine-dining restaurant was closed for the month, the free shuttle always full, the room ready only after 6.30pm and the air conditioning struggling in the heat.
Arriving well before check-in, with the room not yet ready, they were invited to freshen up in the spa while their bags went upstairs. From the station opposite they set off for Lake Como and Venice.
With the family: courteous staff and a spa called world class; the corridors, though, looked dated, and they wished for an airport shuttle.
As a couple: good service and a good breakfast; around the station, though, they saw people who did not reassure them, and found the rooms very dark.

A 3-minute, 188-metre walk from the hotel’s door, at number 9 Piazza Duca d’Aosta, to the main entrance of Milano Centrale; the side entrance on Piazza Quattro Novembre is 2 minutes and 176 metres away. Routes calculated on OpenStreetMap’s streets on 27 September 2026. Google says 3 minutes, Booking.com between 335 and 427 metres, measured to another point of the station. Gemini, the same day, said one or 2 minutes: that is the time to the metro, since the Centrale FS entrance with a lift is 1 minute and 102 metres away. And the platforms? One floor up: the new escalators get you there in about 40 seconds, MilanoToday reported in May 2026.

On price it is a draw: on 27 September 2026, on Google Hotels, the official site and Booking.com were both asking €532 for 14 October, while a third site, Evendo, asked €444. Yes, if you arrive by train and will use the spa; less so if you want to walk out to the Duomo. On Google it scores 4.7 out of 5 from 2,945 reviews, 82% of them 5-star; on Tripadvisor 4.6 from 1,779, with a Travelers’ Choice 2026 award and value for money at 4.3; on Booking.com 8.8 out of 10 from 583, and on Expedia 9.4. It depends on the rate. When it is not included it costs €45 per person, according to Booking.com; Google and Expedia list it as extra. The MICHELIN Guide lists it without a star, at 3 price symbols out of 4, and Gambero Rosso gives it 2 forks.
The pool, whirlpool and gym, yes, for hotel guests: Marriott lists them as complimentary, and guests confirm it. The sauna and steam room are included too: Marriott’s hotel page, read on 15 October 2026, lists them in the fitness centre marked complimentary, available when the spa is open, and the spa’s FAQ charges an entrance fee only to guests not staying at the hotel. Marriott says only that they are open during spa hours; 2 Google reviews, from September 2023 and July 2026, describe the spa as included, sauna and steam room too; a YouTube video from December 2025 says instead that the spa costs extra, and that the couple got a discount as Marriott Elite members. Treatments are extra: a Shiseido massage costs €170 for 50 minutes and €230 for 80, and every 50- or 80-minute treatment includes an hour in the pool and relaxation area. Outside guests pay to enter: €50 per person or €90 per couple for an hour and a half from Monday to Friday, €90 or €175 at weekends and on public holidays, for 2 hours according to the spa’s Italian FAQ. The Private Spa Suite for 2 costs €300 for an hour; with an 80-minute couple’s massage, the spa’s page says €650 and its treatment menu €700. Perplexity, on 27 September 2026, wrote that the official site does not make the fees for outside guests clear: it does publish them, on its FAQ page.
From 8am to 9pm every day, weekends included: Gemini, in a conversation on 27 September 2026, said until 8pm, and was wrong. The gym is open round the clock to hotel guests. The spa asks you to book treatments and entry in advance and to arrive 15 minutes early, while Marriott’s listing says no appointment is needed. Book on +39 02 6785 3320 or through the spa’s website, which does have an online booking page, whatever ChatGPT says.
Spacious, and at the top of the building: 1,000 m² on the sixth and seventh floors (Gemini put it on the seventh and eighth). There is a heated covered pool with a whirlpool under a skylight, a sauna, a steam room, a Himalayan salt room, an ice room, a relaxation area with herbal teas and fruit, 5 treatment rooms and a Private Spa Suite for 2 with its own whirlpool, sauna and steam room. The Technogym gym is on the seventh floor. The pool is open all year, every day from 8am to 9pm. Its size and water temperature are not published: a Google review from July 2022 puts it at 20 metres long, and another, from April 2024, estimates the water at about 32°C.
Massages, facials and couples’ massages, all with Shiseido products, from €170 upwards. On the official menu, read on 28 September 2026, a relaxing or deep-tissue massage costs €170 for 50 minutes or €230 for 80, and a personalised massage €180 or €240; facials run from €170 for 50 minutes to €250 for the 80-minute Mindful ritual; a couple’s massage costs €320 for 50 minutes or €440 for 80. Each treatment includes an hour in the indoor pool and the spa’s relaxation areas. These are the menu prices on the day they were read, on top of the room rate.
The pool and whirlpool, yes: under-16s only with an adult, and only if they are staying at the hotel. The rest of the spa, no: under-18s cannot use the sauna, steam room, salt room, ice room, relaxation area or gym. There is no children’s pool and no family hour. For families, Booking.com accepts children of every age, with a free cot up to 2 years and an extra bed at €90 a night from 3.
From 3pm, and the room must be vacated by noon, according to Marriott, Google and Booking.com; check-in requires guests to be 18, with an ID and a credit card. Luggage can be left: Booking.com lists a left-luggage service, and a guest who arrived early in September 2026 was invited to freshen up in the spa while the room was prepared. Expedia says there is no after-hours check-in, while giving midnight as the latest arrival.
From Malpensa, by train: the Malpensa Express arrives at Milano Centrale, opposite the hotel, and on 27 September 2026 a direct train from Malpensa T1 took 56 minutes and cost €15. Linate is about 8 km away, according to Marriott. The bus stops for Malpensa and Orio al Serio are on either side of the station, as OpenStreetMap shows. The hotel runs no airport shuttle, as Marriott states: Booking.com lists one among its most popular facilities, and is wrong. The free shuttle goes only to La Scala, from 9am to 8.20pm.
By metro: the Centrale FS entrance with a lift is a minute from the door, and on the M3 the Duomo is 4 stops away. Or by the hotel’s free shuttle, which Marriott says reaches La Scala in 10–15 minutes, from 9am to 8.20pm; you book it at reception or with the concierge. On foot, measured on OpenStreetMap’s streets, La Scala is 33 minutes and 2,505 metres away, the Duomo 39 minutes and 2,888 metres.
Yes: on 27 September 2026 Google Hotels showed prices for every night up to August 2027, and neither the hotel nor Marriott publishes a seasonal closure. The spa, pool, bar and lounge open every day; Terrazza Gallia’s restaurant Tuesday to Saturday, and in August 2026 one guest found it closed for the month.
A station square, between the Pirelli Tower and the towers of Porta Nuova: in the rooms most guests sleep well; in the street, not everyone feels at ease. Many rooms look over Piazza Duca d’Aosta and the facade of Milano Centrale, and several guests, between 2025 and 2026, describe them as quiet. In Google reviews, sleep is mentioned favourably 32 times out of 52, the location 185 times out of 212.
Yes, if they are small: Marriott accepts one pet per room, up to 39 lb, about 18 kg, without publishing a fee, and Booking.com says pets are allowed on request at no extra charge. The spa, though, is off limits to them. On Google one guest describes an August 2022 stay with their dog. The nearest fenced dog area is in the Giardino Gregor Mendel, an 8-minute walk (631 metres); on the metro and on Trenord’s trains dogs travel with a muzzle and on a lead, outside the rush hours that ATM and Trenord set.
Yes, at the hotel: €50 a day for guests, according to Marriott; others pay €20 for one to 4 hours and €50 from the fifth, and booking is compulsory. There are no electric-car chargers. Expedia mentions valet parking, for a fee.
A 5-star luxury hotel in Marriott’s Luxury Collection, opened in 1932, with 235 rooms according to Marriott, more than 50 of them suites; its rooms page says “more than 200” rooms and 53 suites instead. The largest is the Katara Royal Suite, 1,000 m² with terraces. There are 12 rooms for meetings and events, the largest for up to 470 people, and the Cupola, a room under the original dome with 23 armchairs that disappear into the floor.
