At Tremezzo, the lake is not merely a view from the window: it is where you spend the day. More than its apricot façade, that is the reason to stay here.

The detail I would remember is the pool floating on the lake in front of the hotel. It is more than a photogenic feature: it tells you how this place works. Cross the Regina road and the day begins on the water, with Bellagio opposite and ferries passing by.

The 1910 palace is still a grand hotel in the fullest sense: salons, terraces and a two-hectare park climbing towards Villa Emilia and its spa. Five places to eat range from pizza by the lido to Gualtiero Marchesi's cuisine, still served here.

Choose your room carefully. Lake and park views change the stay more than the category, and the road runs below the lake-facing façade. The Rooftop suites, with terraces and tubs, make the rest feel like a backdrop.

I would choose Tremezzo when the lake is the reason for the trip: two or three days together, Villa Carlotta on foot in the morning, a boat in the afternoon and an aperitivo at T Bar as Bellagio lights up. This is a place to stay, not merely a base for touring.
