The secret garden
Valadier’s terraces, restored in 2020, climb towards the Pincio among orange trees, fountains and nymphaea. Breakfast, lunch and the aperitivo are all taken out here.
On Via del Babuino people stroll past the shop windows; behind Hotel de Russie, Valadier’s terraced garden climbs towards the Pincio, with orange trees, fountains and nymphaeums. 10 steps separate the 2 Romes.
A week here, month by monthHotel de Russie suits those who see Rome on foot and want a garden to come back to; between 8 November and 22 December the lowest price any seller showed on Google for a night for 2 was €1,281. Anyone who wants to swim at the end of the day will be happier in a hotel with a pool.
Sunday brunch in Rome: Le Jardin’s brunch, its prices and hoursWould you go?
Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
A Garden View, for trees at the window: the smallest, the Superior Garden View, has the same 33 m² as the Superior over the city. I would ask for the Deluxe Room Garden View: 45 m², where the Deluxe without the garden has 40 m².
On 13 October 2026 the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night was €1,281 or €1,290 from 16 to 29 November and from 12 to 22 December. Booked as 7 nights from 16 November, the lowest that day was €1,687 a night; the hotel’s own listing, €1,898.
Rome’s city tax: €10 per person per night in a 5-star hotel, for up to 10 nights, since 1 October 2023. The In Love with Rome offer, from 2 nights, includes breakfast but not the tax; a dog adds a €150 cleaning fee per stay.
The hotel tells guests of its Garden View rooms and suites that a table of their own awaits in the garden at twilight, for up to 4: flowers, a bottle of Champagne and a bespoke menu by the chef. The concierge takes the booking.
Most doors in Rome are for going out; Hotel de Russie’s is made for coming back. Leave Via del Babuino behind and the garden starts to climb, terrace by terrace, towards the Pincio. Give it 10 minutes before you plan your next stop, and you will see why one family has been coming back since 2002.
The garden will follow you up to your room, but only if you ask. In the official room collection the Garden View categories and the Vaselli, Valadier, Picasso and Nijinsky suites look onto the greenery, and the others onto the city, the inner courtyard or Piazza del Popolo: if you want trees at the window when you wake, pick a Garden View when you book.
The rest of the day belongs to Rome. On the way back, between the tables at Le Jardin and the courtyard of the Stravinskij Bar, open until 1am, the evening stretches out before you go upstairs. This is the hotel for walking the centre and slowing down at the end of it; in the warmer months even breakfast is served outdoors.
One name keeps coming up in the Hotel de Russie’s reviews, and it belongs to a maître d’. On 28 September 2026 we gathered the 1,908 reviews Google shows, chose 8 videos by 8 different people and mapped 14 walks from Via del Babuino 9. Then we searched the 924 reviews with text: 67 talk about breakfast, 17 thank the same restaurant maître d’ by name, and 13 of those remember him at breakfast. All 17 give 5 stars.
Lumina Guide 2027
Exceptional: two of our three readings say so.
Behind Via del Babuino, Hotel de Russie hides Valadier’s terraced garden, climbing to the Pincio among orange trees, fountains and nymphaeums: breakfast, Le Jardin and the Stravinskij Bar are all out there.

We found an 1818 palazzo 3 minutes’ walk from Piazza del Popolo, rooms from the 33 m² Superior to the 172 m² Nijinsky Suite with its terrace, and a 600 m² spa with a saltwater hydrotherapy pool.
What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.
Piazza del Popolo on one side, 3 minutes’ walk away (223 metres), the Spanish Steps on the other, 9 minutes (643 metres); Flaminio metro station is 4 minutes away (333 metres).
An 1818 palazzo and, below the Pincio, Valadier’s terraced garden, where Picasso and Cocteau strolled in 1917. 2 MICHELIN Keys.
The smallest, the Superior, has 33 m²; the largest, the Nijinsky Suite, 172 m² and a terrace. The Garden View rooms look onto the garden, and the Popolo Suite has a terrace over Piazza del Popolo.
Le Jardin takes breakfast outdoors in the warmer months and serves Sunday brunch at €98. Then there are the Stravinskij Bar in the courtyard and, for tequila, the Aquazzura Bar.
The hydrotherapy pool is saltwater, and around it are a sauna, a steam room and 5 treatment rooms, in 600 m² of spa. There is no pool for swimming, though.
A garden in the middle of the city and brunch outdoors: in Rome, this is the hotel to book for both. Anyone hoping to spend under €1,300 a night will find it a stretch even at the cheapest seller on Google.
A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.
Here: an 1818 palazzo and, below the Pincio, Valadier’s terraced garden, where Picasso and Cocteau strolled in 1917.
A history that goes back to at least 1818. 31 hotels of 335 hold it.
Every hotel with this badgeWhat do Hotel de Russie’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests remember the quiet garden below the Pincio, in central Rome; Piazza del Popolo is 3 minutes’ walk away, the Spanish Steps 9.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of quiet, clean, comfortable rooms, and remember the bed and the bathroom; for trees at the window, book a Garden View.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests thank Le Jardin’s maître d’ by name and remember the service in the garden, between the restaurant’s tables and the Stravinskij Bar’s courtyard.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is outdoors at Le Jardin, under branches reaching down from the Pincio: guests remember the garden and, by name, the maître d’.
The garden, for breakfast or a drink with the city all around, is what guests content with the bill say they are gladly paying for.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 31 October 2021 to 27 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Rome: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in Rome:
Price: for two on the night of 14 December 2026, from €1,281 (seen on Google Hotels on 13 October 2026).
On 13 October 2026 the lowest price any seller showed on Google for a night for 2 started at €1,281 between 8 November and 22 December, at €1,807 between 23 December and the end of March, and at €1,932 between April and 10 July 2027; the dearest night was Friday 23 October 2026, at €3,861. For a summer stay I would look at 1 to 15 August: €1,660 to €1,848 a night, every one of them under April’s lowest.
| Period | Euros a night |

| 14 October to 7 November 2026 | 1,662–3,861 |

| 23 December to 31 March 2027 | 1,807–2,438 |

| 11 July to 31 August 2027 | 1,660–2,167 |

Each figure is the lowest price Google Hotels showed from any seller for that one night, in a search for 2 adults, read on 13 October 2026. The hotel’s own listing is another figure: that day, for the 7 nights from 16 November, Google showed it at €1,898 a night, for a Superior Room. The calendar ran to 14 September 2027, and 10 nights before that date had no price.
Hotel de Russie for the garden, between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps; the Bulgari for dinner on the fifth floor, above the Mausoleum of Augustus; La Minerva for the Pantheon 3 minutes from the door and a rooftop facing its dome. For a swim, only the Bulgari has a pool, 20 metres long: the other 2 have spas without one.
| Hotel | A night, from | The Spanish Steps, on foot |

| Hotel de Russie | €1,290 | 9 minutes |
| Bulgari Hotel Roma | €1,879 | 8 minutes |
| La Minerva | €1,311 | 17 minutes |
A night: the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night in the week of 16 November 2026, in a search for 2 adults, read on 13 October 2026. The walks to the Spanish Steps were computed on OpenStreetMap’s streets on 28 September and 4 October 2026.
Sunday brunch at Le Jardin, its glasshouse, lunch between the frescoed dining room and the garden, breakfast on the terrace, the Secret Garden, two cocktails at the Stravinskij Bar, a junior suite looking onto Piazza del Popolo and the entrance on Via del Babuino after dark.

A 19th-century palazzo that ends in a terraced garden: an open-air restaurant, a courtyard bar and a spa, all below the Pincio.

Valadier’s terraces, restored in 2020, climb towards the Pincio among orange trees, fountains and nymphaea. Breakfast, lunch and the aperitivo are all taken out here.

Fulvio Pierangelini’s cooking, served in the garden: breakfast from 7 to 10.30am, then lunch and dinner, with first courses at €32 to €40 and mains at €36 to €62.

Every Sunday since 20 September, at Le Jardin, from 12.30 to 3.30pm: €98 a head, €60 for children aged 3 to 12, drinks extra.

In the hotel’s open-air courtyard, from 10am to 1am, the cocktail list is called “Rome in a Sip”, and it is signed by Salvatore Calabrese and Mattia Capezzuoli.

The Irene Forte Spa: 600 m² with a saltwater hydrotherapy pool, a sauna, a steam room and 5 treatment rooms. Open 8am to 8pm, for ages 12 and over.

Saturday or Sunday? Le Jardin’s page, read on 28 September 2026, says Sundays only, since 20 September. The hotel’s April 2026 factsheet and its July activities brochure promise brunch across the whole weekend instead, with live cooking stations.
By car, the trouble is the Tridente. Via del Babuino sits inside its ZTL, closed to unauthorised cars from 6.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 7pm on Saturday, and the permit that lets hotels register their guests’ number plates does not apply here. The hotel publishes nothing on arriving by car; taxis and chauffeur-driven cars can enter.
The valet’s price is nowhere on the hotel’s website; the platforms do give one: €59 a day on Booking.com, with parking at the hotel, €59 a night on Hotels.com. Tripadvisor, for its part, says the private parking is nearby.
The hotel welcomes dogs up to 20 kg, one per room, or 2 if neither weighs over 10 kg, with a €150 cleaning fee per stay; they stay out of the indoor restaurant, the spa and the gym. A word of warning, though: the MICHELIN Guide, Google and Hotels.com list pets as not allowed.

Plane or train, then a taxi to the door; in your own car, the Tridente opens only outside ZTL hours or with a permit.
| Fiumicino Airport | 31 km, about 32 minutes by car, without traffic. The hotel arranges airport and station transfers, which Hotels.com lists at an extra charge. |
|---|---|
| Roma Termini | 4.0 km, about 7 minutes by car; by metro, line A stops at Flaminio, 4 minutes’ walk (333 metres) from the hotel, and at Spagna, 9 minutes’ walk (673 metres). |
| By car | Via del Babuino lies inside the Tridente ZTL: from 6.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 7pm on Saturday only authorised cars, taxis and chauffeur-driven cars may enter, says Roma Mobilità. The hotel offers valet parking; the booking sites give €59 a day. |
| By electric car | Since 1 July 2026 electric cars also need a permit to enter Rome’s ZTLs. The hotel says it has a charging point in its garage, without saying whether guests can use it. |
| On foot | Piazza del Popolo is 3 minutes’ walk (223 metres) away, the Spanish Steps 9 minutes’ walk (643 metres), the Ara Pacis 10 minutes’ walk (775 metres), the Trevi Fountain 17 minutes’ walk (1,274 metres). |
Walking and driving times and distances computed on OpenStreetMap’s streets on 28 September 2026, without traffic, from the hotel’s address at Via del Babuino 9.
The Pincio and Villa Borghese sit right above the garden; Piazza del Popolo is a short stroll away, and the Spanish Steps and the Ara Pacis are within walking distance.

In 3 minutes on foot (223 metres) you reach the obelisk, the twin churches and the Caravaggios of Santa Maria del Popolo; the Pincio terrace, up above, is 12 minutes away (855 metres).

The park above the Pincio, with its lake and the Temple of Aesculapius. The Galleria Borghese is a 25-minute walk away (1,872 metres).

Walk Via del Babuino to its end and you are at the steps up to Trinità dei Monti: 9 minutes (643 metres).

Down towards the Lungotevere, 10 minutes on foot (775 metres): Augustus’s altar in its museum.

Regulars and 2 business trips, a Roman breakfast and an evening with a wedding in the house: 5 accounts between June and September 2026.
A family that has been coming back since 2002, this time to a suite over Valadier’s garden they had stayed in before: the concierge team helped with a complicated shipment from the United States. There is no city view, they write; it is a few minutes’ walk away.
On business in September: a garden for breakfast in the middle of the city, with homemade cakes every day, savoury dishes and the inevitable maritozzo; the staff are friendly and well trained.
Regular guests, in September: the garden feels like an extension of the Villa Borghese gardens, and the courtyard is the place for a drink or a more relaxed meal; they return for the restaurant and breakfast teams.
In June: the location, the food and usually the service up to standard, but on the evening a wedding took over much of the hotel the service was less attentive than usual.
On business in July: a disappointing stay because of the cleanliness of the rooms and public areas, not what this guest expected from so renowned a hotel.

Rome’s city tax for 5-star hotels is €10 per person per night, for up to 10 nights. Breakfast is included in the hotel’s offers; on other rates Hotels.com gives it at about €42 a head, while Google lists it as free.

Yes, 3 rooms and 4 outdoor spaces, according to the May 2026 events factsheet: the 105 m² Sala Torlonia, for up to 70 theatre-style and 90 standing, the 70 m² Sala Diaghilev and Le Privé for 12; outside, among others, the garden pergola. The hotel’s own pages count differently: 4 rooms, and the Sala Torlonia for up to 100 people.
