The spa
The 25-metre pool at 28°C, the saunas, the steam bath and, out on the terrace, 3 whirlpools at 15, 36 and 39°C, one for every degree of courage, with Zurich in front of you. Daily from 6am to 10pm.
The Dolder Grand began in 1899 as a Curhaus, a place to climb above Zurich for fresh air. Today you watch the city from a 39°C whirlpool on the spa terrace, and in the lobby Duane Hanson’s The Traveller greets you.
A week here, month by monthThe Dolder Grand suits a stay above Zurich built round its 4,000 m² spa: from November 2026, one night taken alone started at €680 for 2 adults, the lowest seller’s price on Google. To explore the city on foot, a hotel in town suits better.
Spa hotel in Zurich: the Dolder’s spa, its hours, who gets in and what it costs The Dolder Grand restaurantWould you go?
Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
I would ask for the Double Rooms Deluxe: 35 to 46 m², south-facing, with a balcony and a view of Zurich, the lake or the Swiss Alps. The Junior Suites Grand, 54 to 64 m², add a whirlpool bathtub.
Consider 1–7 September 2027: one night taken alone, for 2 adults, ran from €691 to €714 on Google, read 13 October 2026. The dearest night shown, 17 November 2026, was €6,597.
The hotel garage costs CHF 4 an hour, at most CHF 40 for 24 hours, and a dog CHF 50 a night. Staying on after check-out until 6pm costs 50% of the room rate, subject to availability.
6 guests who wrote between June 2024 and July 2026 mention hikes, e-bikes or trails in the forest next to the hotel; the zoo is 29 minutes away on foot along the Zürichberg forest.
The fairy-tale towers belong to the Curhaus that opened on the Adlisberg in 1899, for people coming up from Zurich to stay awhile; the 2 new wings beside them are by Norman Foster. The journey, though, is unchanged: from the city to the trees, then back to the city, seen this time from warm water outdoors. How long to stay up here is the first thing to decide, even before the room: that distance shapes the whole stay.
The spa runs to 4,000 m² of water and steam: a 25-metre indoor pool, 3 outdoor whirlpools on the terrace and, from the age of 16, 2 swimwear-free areas, one for women and one for men. Hotel guests use it free, on the day they arrive and the day they leave too; visitors come in on a Day Spa pass, from CHF 290. At table the choice runs from Heiko Nieder’s The Restaurant, with 2 Michelin stars and 19 GaultMillau points, to Saltz, open from breakfast to dinner, and the Japanese counter at Mikuriya, which has 7 or 8 seats in all.
For the view, the room category decides. The Deluxe Doubles and Grand Junior Suites face south over the city, the lake and the Alps; the Singles and Superior Doubles look onto the forest, the garden or the courtyard. Guests praise the spa, the staff and the view. Club members and Day Spa visitors use the spa too: anyone after a small hotel with the pool to themselves will be happier elsewhere.
From the Dolder’s hill came 2,000 Google reviews, the most recent of 4,138, back to January 2022, and we searched the 1,053 that carry a text, alongside the scores on Booking.com, Tripadvisor and Expedia, 45 pages of the official site, 30 videos found on YouTube and 8 clips by 2 authors chosen for this page, all on 27 September 2026. We had not expected the pop-ups: 25 reviews describe dinner at one of the hotel’s temporary restaurants, 23 of them with 5 stars, from lobster at the Lobster Club to the Dolder Lodge, its bar dressed as a mountain hut.
Lumina Guide 2027
Exceptional: two of our three readings say so.
The Dolder Grand is the 1899 Curhaus on the hill above Zurich, with wings by Norman Foster: a 4,000-square-metre spa, more than a hundred works of art and Heiko Nieder’s 2-star cooking.

Ours (exceptional)
We found a 25-metre indoor pool and 3 outdoor whirlpools, the Japanese counter at Mikuriya with 7 or 8 seats, Deluxe Doubles that face south and a shuttle into town every hour.
Among the Dolder Grand’s regulars, 6 write of the staff and service, 3 of the spa and 3 of the breakfast. A guest writing in May 2023, on a second stay, took a long hike around the area and recommends it for a getaway. A guest who wrote in February 2022 says the old house, where they always stayed, has been perfectly refurbished.

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.
On the hill where the forest begins, with the city and the lake at its feet. The Dolderbahn leaves a few steps from the entrance, and the hotel’s shuttle runs into town every hour.
The towers of the 1899 Curhaus, Norman Foster’s wings and more than a hundred works of art around the house, from Dalí to Murakami.
Generous, from 25 m² in the singles to 400 m² in the presidential suite. A lake view comes with the category you book.
2 Michelin stars at The Restaurant, 17 GaultMillau points at Mikuriya, 15 at Saltz, and room service that never closes.
A 25-metre pool, outdoor whirlpools up to 39°C, separate saunas for women and men and La Prairie treatments; club members and Day Spa visitors use it too.
For a spa day and a dinner to remember, Zurich is hard to beat. To explore the city on foot, you are better off in a hotel down in town.
A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.
Here: a 4,000 m² spa: a 25-metre pool, outdoor whirlpools up to 39 °C, separate saunas for women and men and La Prairie treatments.

Every hotel with this badgeWhat do The Dolder Grand’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. From the hill you see Zurich, the lake and the Alps, with forest all around; the Dolderbahn or the hotel’s free shuttle takes you down into town.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write first of the view over the city, the lake and the Alps from the south-facing rooms; you sleep in the 1899 building or in Norman Foster’s modern wings.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of warm, attentive staff, from the front desk to housekeeping, and keep coming back to the spa and to the art at every turn of the house.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is at Saltz, a buffet with dishes to order: guests write of the choice and the quality, and more than one ranks it among the best hotel breakfasts they have had.
The room rate includes the spa and the shuttle into town; breakfast, at Saltz, is extra on the basic rate.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 9 July 2024 to 27 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Zurich: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in Zurich:
Price: for two on the night of 10 November 2026, from €680 (seen on Google Hotels on 13 October 2026).
Read on 13 October 2026, one night taken alone for 2 adults runs from €680 in November 2026 to €1,029 in June 2027, with early September 2027 at €691 to €714. I would choose 2 to 6 February 2027, at €708 for one night taken alone.

A 4,000 m² spa, 4 restaurants, a bar with live music on Fridays and Saturdays and, along the corridors, an art collection fit for a museum.

The 25-metre pool at 28°C, the saunas, the steam bath and, out on the terrace, 3 whirlpools at 15, 36 and 39°C, one for every degree of courage, with Zurich in front of you. Daily from 6am to 10pm.

Heiko Nieder, 2 Michelin stars, cooks for the dining room at dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, and at lunch on Thursdays and Fridays. For 4 or 5 there is the Chef’s Table: a backlit onyx table inside the kitchen.

Blue banquettes and a line of red neon: the room is the work of the artist Rolf Sachs. Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, brunch at weekends and, in summer, the terrace.

More than a hundred works across the salons and corridors: originals by Salvador Dalí and Takashi Murakami, whose Troll’s Umbrella turns up in a white passageway, and in the lobby Duane Hanson’s “The Traveller”.
Bürkliplatz, on the lake, is 4 km away: you go down into town on the Dolderbahn or on the hotel’s free shuttle, which runs back up the hill every hour from 10am to 6pm. Source: thedoldergrand.com
Guests share the spa with members of its club and Day Spa visitors. At the busiest hours the loungers and saunas can all be taken: 4 Google reviews describe it between June 2024 and March 2026, and one on Tripadvisor in July 2026; the hotel replies that membership is small, and kept that way on purpose.
The only swimming pool is the 25-metre one indoors; outside, on the terrace, there are the 3 whirlpools and nothing more. The 50-metre pool that Google and Forbes generously credit to the hotel is the Freibad Dolder, the public pool 8 minutes’ walk away: hotel guests get in free, but the season ended on 13 September.
Breakfast is not in the basic rate, and the hotel does not publish its price: CHF 55 a person according to Trip.com, “from CHF 65” according to The Telegraph in June 2025. It is served at Saltz from 7am to 10.30am. Between February 2025 and August 2026, 5 Google reviews describe waits of 20 or 30 minutes at breakfast for a table or a coffee.
Dogs are welcome at CHF 50 a night each, with a bed, a bowl and a menu made for them. They may go into every restaurant, one at a time at The Restaurant, and stay out only of the Spa Café.

By public transport the journey ends on the rack railway from Römerhof; by car the airport is 14.2 km away. Driving times are calculated on the road network, without traffic.
| Zurich Airport | 14.2 km: 17 minutes by car without traffic according to OSRM, 28 according to Valhalla, which slows down more in town. The hotel says about 20 minutes, Forbes 18. A taxi from the airport to the centre costs about CHF 65, according to the airport. |
|---|---|
| Airport by public transport | Train to Zürich HB, tram 3 to Römerhof, then the Dolderbahn: 41–46 minutes in the daytime. The first Dolderbahn leaves the top at 6.38am, and the earliest public-transport arrival at the airport is 7.11am on weekdays and 7.24am on Sundays, according to the Swiss timetable: for an earlier flight you need a taxi or one of the hotel’s cars. |
| From Zürich HB | Tram 2 or 3 to Römerhof, then the Dolderbahn to its terminus, Dolder: 19–27 minutes in the timetable for Tuesday 29 September 2026. By car it is 4.3 km, 9 minutes without traffic. |
| The Dolderbahn | The rack railway climbs from Römerhof every 10 minutes during the day; the first run up leaves at 6.23am and the last at 11.30pm, the last run down at 11.23pm. The top station stands beside the main entrance, as the hotel says: 16 metres, measured on OpenStreetMap. Google Hotels gives a 4-minute walk, because it measures from the point where it places the hotel, 130 metres away. An ordinary Zurich public-transport ticket covers it. |
| Shuttle into town | Free, every day, hourly from 9.30am to 5.30pm (12.45pm instead of 12.30pm) to the Stadthaus on the lake beside Bürkliplatz, returning from 10am to 6pm, according to the concierge page. By car Bürkliplatz is 4 km away, 8 minutes without traffic. |
| Chauffeured cars | The hotel’s limousines run at any hour on request through the concierge, who does not publish the price. There is no scheduled airport shuttle: Google lists the transfer as an extra charge. |
| Parking | An underground garage with 240 spaces and direct access to the hotel: CHF 4 an hour, at most CHF 40 for 24 hours, no reservation needed, according to the hotel’s FAQ. Valet parking is guaranteed for hotel guests and, on busy days, kept for them alone. |
| In town | The Kunsthaus is 2.5 km away, 5 minutes by car; Zürich HB is a 45-minute walk, all downhill. The Zürichberg forest starts behind the hotel. |

A few minutes’ walk away, the Adlisberg forest, the ice rink and the Freibad, the public open-air pool; the city lies below, 6 minutes down by rack railway.

A little red rack railway climbs from Römerhof through the trees in 6 minutes and sets you down beside the hotel’s entrance. By day it runs every 10 minutes; the last one up leaves at 11.30pm.

Half an hour’s walk along the Zürichberg forest and you are in Madagascar: in the Masoala Halle a rainforest grows under a clear roof. The concierge can get tickets.

Down in town, 5 minutes and 2.5 km by car: the Kunsthaus and its wing by David Chipperfield on Heimplatz. The concierge gets tickets here too.

The hotel’s free shuttle drops you at the Stadthaus; from there, a few steps take you into the streets along the Limmat, under the twin towers of the Grossmünster.

2 couples, a business trip, a family and a woman travelling alone: 5 guests from summer 2026, for better and for worse.
Back with her partner for a second stay: the spa, the gym, the forest trail in the morning, the art at every turn and the minibus into town every hour.
A couple in September: kind staff, a clean and quiet room, and a spa that was the highlight of their stay.
On a business trip, he remembers an outstanding breakfast, the bar and warm, attentive staff at every turn.
With her family in June: a first-class lobby, rooms and bathrooms and one of the best spas she has seen; some works in the collection struck her as out of place.
Travelling alone in August: she praises the concierge and the spa, found the treatments average and the handover between shifts poor, and would recommend the Dolder for a spa day or a meal rather than a stay.

Big and complete: 4,000 m², open daily from 6am to 10pm, with treatments from 9am to 9pm and the gym open round the clock to hotel guests. Then come the surprises: a meditation room under a mirror-mosaic dome, a Japanese sunaburo of warm pebbles, 2 private 70 m² Spa Suites, the Spa Café, open from 10am to 8pm, and a shop. Children aged 12 and over may use the Aqua Zone and have treatments with an adult; the swimwear-free areas are for those aged 16 and over. Indoors: 25 metres long, about 28°C, in the spa’s Aqua Zone, for children aged 12 and over with an adult. Outdoors, on the spa terrace, there are only 3 whirlpools, at about 15, 36 and 39°C: the hotel says so in its FAQ, and Google, which lists an outdoor pool, and Forbes, which describes indoor and outdoor pools, are wrong. For an outdoor swim there is the Freibad Dolder, the 50-metre public pool 8 minutes’ walk away and free for hotel guests: it reopened in June 2026 after restoration, closed for the season on 13 September, and its wave machine returns from summer 2027.
There are 175 rooms and suites, and for the lake you want a Double Room Deluxe or a Grand Junior Suite. The Double Rooms Deluxe, 35–46 m², face south, with a balcony and a view of the city, the lake or the Alps; 6 of them, in the historic building, are listed rooms restored to their original state. The 44 junior suites measure 53 to 64 m², all with a whirlpool bath; the Grand ones look over the city, the lake and the mountains. The suites, from 83 to 220 m², have fireplaces, a sauna in the bathroom and a butler; the presidential suites range from 120 to 400 m². Google, Trip.com and Agoda list air conditioning; the official room descriptions do not.

Breakfast is extra, the spa and the shuttle into town are included, and a room can be cancelled free of charge until 3pm on the day before arrival.
Yes, at the Dolder Golfclub, a 9-hole course opened in 1907 on the slope just below the hotel. The hotel sells no golf package, but its guests pay a reduced green fee: CHF 70 for 9 holes and CHF 100 for 18, against CHF 80 and CHF 120 for members of other Swiss clubs. The club asks for a handicap of 36 or better and registration the day before, and takes 12 visitors a day, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays until 2pm, 3 times a season; the 2026 season runs from March to the end of October. The club’s table lists hotel guests as a price category and does not say whether these limits apply to them.
At Kurhausstrasse 65, in District 7, on the wooded Adlisberg hill above the city, and yes, it is quiet: the hotel describes a peaceful area, and The Telegraph, in June 2025, a stay set to the birdsong and owls of the forest. Bürkliplatz, on the lake, is 4 km away, 8 minutes by car without traffic. Beyond the hotel, no restaurant is within walking distance: for dinner in town you go down on the Dolderbahn, which leaves a few steps from the entrance and runs back up until 11.30pm; the hotel’s shuttle makes its last return at 6pm.
Very well. On 27 September 2026 the scores were 4.7 out of 5 on Google, from 4,138 reviews, 4.6 on Tripadvisor, where it ranks ninth of 140 hotels in Zurich and holds the Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best 2026, 9.1 on Booking.com and 9.6 on Expedia. Guests praise the spa, the staff, the view and the forest. The reviews also come back to the hours when the spa is full and to waits for a table at breakfast. For value for money Tripadvisor gives 4.2 out of 5 and Booking.com 8.4. The basic rate leaves breakfast out and includes the spa and the shuttle into town, so check what the rate you book includes.
Yes, as 4 packages for 31 December 2026, each for at least 2 nights with breakfast: the 8-course dinner at The Restaurant, CHF 200 a person to spend at Saltz, a 4-course dinner in the Garden Salons, or CHF 200 at the winter pop-up. All include the brunch on 1 January, live music, champagne at midnight, the spa and a DJ from 12.30am to 3am. Prices appear only when you book, and the music programme has not been published yet; Falstaff reported in December 2025 that that year’s packages had sold out.
Yes, beneath the hotel: an underground garage with 240 spaces and direct access, at CHF 4 an hour and at most CHF 40 for 24 hours, with no reservation needed. Valet parking is guaranteed for hotel guests and, when the hotel is full, kept for them alone; Google also lists electric-car charging. And for getting about, the hotel lends its guests an electric BMW i4 and e-bikes, free of charge.
Yes: CHF 50 a night for each pet, and the hotel wants the breed and name in advance. Trip.com, in one summary, converts the CHF 50 into “approx. $7”: it is about $60, as the same page says further down. Dogs get a bed, a bowl, treats and their own menu at Saltz and from room service, and a dog-sitter can be booked. They may go into every restaurant, but only one at a time, announced in advance, at The Restaurant; at the Spa Café only assistance dogs. Housekeeping comes in only when the dog is out or supervised.
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out by noon; staying on until 6pm costs half the room rate, if there is room, and luggage is stored free before and after. Connecting rooms are available on request. Children aged 3 to 12 have a free Kids Room, staffed on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6pm; outside those hours a babysitter costs CHF 54 an hour, for 3 hours at least.
