For couples who want contemporary Venetian rooms, Ca’ di Dio starts at €350, the lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night taken alone for 2 adults. If the lagoon must be outside your window, choose the room category carefully.

Our verdict

A round window frames the bell tower and dome of San Giorgio Maggiore; on the sill, 2 blue glass vases and 2 flutes

Ca’ di Dio stands on the waterfront walk to the Arsenale, in a building founded in 1272 to shelter pilgrims, and sheltering is still what it does best. After a day among the pavilions you leave the most exposed stretch of Venice and, all at once, you are in a quiet courtyard: Patricia Urquiola turned it into a hotel without losing that passage from city to refuge. Only one thing needs choosing with care, the room, because the Basin of St Mark shows only from the categories that promise the view.

Inside, Venice reaches you muffled, like a radio in the next room. The courtyards hold the kitchen garden, the wellhead and mimosa and magnolia trees; the lobby fills what was once the chapel, under a Murano glass chandelier; then come the reading room, the Pura City Spa and the gym. Essentia, in the courtyard, feeds you from breakfast to dinner, VERO serves dinner on the waterfront, and for a drink there is the Alchemia bar.

Here you book the view by reading the room’s name. The lagoon and San Giorgio can be seen from the Lagoon View Junior Suites and Suites and from the Altana Suite, with its rooftop terrace; the Deluxe rooms (22 m²) face the courtyard, the Premium Junior Suites the inner gardens, the Executive Suites Canal View the canal. Guests praise the staff, the breakfast and the quiet. The bill carries the 5% staff contribution and, with a child in the room, the child’s supplement.

A great deal gets written and filmed about Ca’ di Dio, and on 27 September 2026 we lined up a good part of it: 457 Google reviews, 345 of them with text; the Booking.com and Tripadvisor scores, from 724 and 376 reviews; 28 YouTube videos, 24 of them about the hotel; 37 Instagram posts and 20 on TikTok; 31 articles on 29 sites and 29 pages of the official website. Then we counted, and one thing surprised us: the Biennale, which heads our own page, comes up in 11 reviews; quiet, calm and refuge from the crowds, in 57.

One Lume

Lumina Guide 2027

Gives more than the other hotels of its place and price range.

Ca’ di Dio is the pilgrims’ hospice of 1272 that Patricia Urquiola turned into a hotel on the Arsenale waterfront: from the Biennale it is a 5-minute walk back to shelter, away from the crowds.

How Lumi are awarded
  • Guests

345 reviews read: the location pleases more than 9 guests in 10 who mention it, the staff and service 9 in 10.

  • Critics

  • Ours (exceptional)

We found the lobby in the former chapel, under a Murano glass chandelier, a kitchen garden and a stone wellhead, and the lagoon from the rooms that carry it in their name, up to the Altana Suite with its rooftop terrace.

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

On the waterfront beside the Arsenale, with the water bus at the door: the Biennale is 5 minutes’ walk away, St Mark’s 12.

  2. Character

A thirteenth-century hospice that Sansovino rebuilt and Patricia Urquiola reimagined, with Murano glass, marble, courtyards and altane.

  3. Rooms

Well kept and quiet; the view has to be chosen when booking, because the lagoon comes only with the categories that carry it in their name and some rooms look inwards.

  4. Food and social life

VERO on the waterfront at night, Essentia in the courtyard by day, and Alchemia at the bar. Breakfast gets people talking: over a hundred Google reviews, with an average of 4.8.

  5. Wellness

No pool: instead, a small spa with Zoé Cosmetics rituals, a sauna and steam room at extra cost, and a gym.

  6. The stay as a whole

One of the hotels closest to the Biennale, with 5-star courtyards and service; the lagoon, though, is only for some of its windows.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Ca’ di Dio’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. 2 things recur: the vaporetto at the door and Castello’s calm, 10 minutes from St Mark’s.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Spacious for Venice, spotless, with comfortable beds and a large bathroom: that is the room as guests describe it.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The staff win people over: several guests remember the concierge’s tips and the free boat to Murano, with a visit to a glassworks.

  4. Breakfast

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is the buffet at Essentia, with tables in the courtyard; in many reviews, and in several languages, the same waitress is thanked by name.

  5. Price

A calm retreat to come back to in the afternoon, away from the Venice crowds: that is the hotel as guests who find the bill fair describe it.

The scores come from 345 Google reviews with text, left from 1 September 2021 to 20 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Venice: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Venice:

  • Londra Palace Venezia
  • Hotel Metropole
  • Hotel Gabrielli
  • Baglioni Hotel Luna
  • Palazzo Venart Luxury Hotel

Eating in

2 tables: Essentia, in the courtyard, from breakfast to dinner, and VERO, which sets up on the waterfront in the evening, facing San Giorgio.

Good to know before you book

  • The lagoon belongs to only some rooms: the Lagoon View Junior Suites and Suites and the Altana Suite. The Deluxe rooms face the courtyard, and the view has to be chosen when you book. Between 2022 and 2026, 3 Google reviews describe a window facing a wall.

  • A 5% contribution for the staff appears on the bill; the hotel’s own site, read on 15 October 2026, does not say whether it is optional. On top comes Venice’s tourist tax, €5 per person per night, for 5 nights at most.

  • From the airport, 2 boats and 2 prices: the Alilaguna Blue Line drops you at Arsenale, outside the hotel, for €18 per person; a private boat transfer booked through the hotel starts at €300.

  • Dogs are welcome, but the rules come from others: €40 a day for Hotels.com and for Mr & Mrs Smith, which mentions dogs up to 15 kg, kept out of the restaurant. The official site is silent.

Frequently asked questions

Hours, prices, boats and dogs: every source, read on 27 September 2026.

How far is the Biennale from Ca’ di Dio?

From the hotel door, at number 2183 on Riva Ca’ di Dio, the Arsenale entrance on Campo della Tana is a 5-minute walk (379 metres); the Giardini entrance on Viale Trento is 12 minutes and 873 metres, and the Sant’Elena one 16. The routes were measured on OpenStreetMap’s streets on 27 September 2026, to the coordinates the Biennale publishes for its entrances. ChatGPT, the same day, gave 15 to 20 minutes for the Giardini: that is the time to the Sant’Elena entrance. The Biennale’s Arsenale infopoint is on the same waterfront as the hotel.

How much is a night at Ca’ di Dio?

On Google Hotels, read on 27 September 2026, a night for 2 on the official site cost €856 for Wednesday 14 October and €1,019 for Saturday 17 October; the cheapest resellers, such as Traventia, went down to €719 and €881. For the nights of November and December the official site was not among the sellers: the lowest price was €408 for Saturday 14 November, a week before the Biennale closes, and €829 for New Year’s Eve. The tourist tax, €5 per person per night, is paid at the hotel.

Is it cheaper to book on the official site or on Booking.com?

The official site, at least on the dates we read: on 27 September 2026, on Google Hotels, it cost less than Booking.com, €856 against €1,037 for 14 October and €1,019 against €1,233 for 17 October. On its own page, for 14 October, Booking.com sold the Deluxe at €934 before the 10% VAT and the tourist tax, non-refundable, or at €1,035 with free cancellation until 12 October. Its house rules also mention a 5% contribution for the staff, optional there, which Hotels.com lists among the mandatory fees. The hotel belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World and can also be booked through its site.

Is breakfast included?

Not always: it depends on the rate. When it is left out it costs €45 per person, according to Booking.com and Hotels.com, which on the same listing also counts it among the free amenities; Google marks it as free, and Mr & Mrs Smith says its rates usually include it. Guests reckon it is worth it: a buffet at Essentia from 7 to 10.30am, mentioned in over a hundred Google reviews with an average of 4.8.

What time are meals, and is the restaurant open every day?

Not every day: VERO, the waterfront restaurant, opens only Wednesday to Sunday, 7pm to 9.30pm, according to its own site; the hotel’s site says 7pm to 10.30pm, Mr & Mrs Smith 7pm to 11pm. Essentia starts with the breakfast buffet, from 7 to 10.30am according to Mr & Mrs Smith and Hotels.com, then serves lunch in the courtyard and dinner in its indoor room. The Alchemia bar also has 2 sets of hours on the same official site: 11am to 1am on the restaurants page, noon to midnight on the bar’s own page. Hours read on 27 September 2026.

What time is check-in?

From 3pm to midnight, with check-out by noon, according to Booking.com; Hotels.com and Kayak give the same hours. To leave later, Mr & Mrs Smith says check-out can be moved, for a charge and when there is room. The hotel’s site, read on 15 October 2026, does not publish a minimum age for checking in.

Which rooms look over the lagoon?

The Lagoon View Junior Suites and Suites, which face San Giorgio and the basin, and the Altana Suite, with its private rooftop altana: the official site puts the view in the name. The Executive Suites Canal View look over the canal, the Premium Junior Suites over the inner gardens, the Deluxe rooms over the courtyard. On how many face the lagoon the sources split: 13 with a frontal lagoon view for Condé Nast Traveler, “most” for Molteni&C, who furnished them.

How do you get there from the airport and the station?

By boat. From Marco Polo airport the Alilaguna Blue Line stops at Arsenale, outside the hotel: €18 per person with one large bag, an hour and a quarter on board; on the timetable valid until 28 October the first boat leaves at 5.20am. A private transfer booked through the hotel ties up at its own jetty and costs €300 by motorboat or €375 by wooden launch, for up to 4 people. From Santa Lucia station, ACTV line 4.1 reaches Arsenale in half an hour along the Giudecca Canal, line 1 in 50 minutes down the Grand Canal: the ticket costs €9.50 and is valid for 75 minutes. A water taxi from the station costs €210. By car you stop at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto and book your parking there: Google Hotels lists parking, but no car reaches the hotel.

How far is St Mark’s Square?

It is 12 minutes on foot, 869 metres along Riva degli Schiavoni, measured on OpenStreetMap’s streets. In Google reviews guests say 8, 10, up to 15 minutes; Sleeper, when the hotel opened in 2021, said under 5, which takes a brisk stride.

Are dogs allowed, and what is the pet fee?

Yes, and the most-cited fee is €40 a day: Hotels.com gives it per pet, and Mr & Mrs Smith, which accepts dogs up to 15 kg and keeps them out of the restaurant, gives the same figure. Booking.com says only that pets are allowed on request and that charges may apply; the official site does not mention them. 3 Google reviews, 2 from 2025 and one from 2021, describe dogs made very welcome, at the terrace bar too.

Is Ca’ di Dio good for children?

Yes, although Google notes there is no pool and no source mentions a kids’ club. Booking.com accepts children of all ages and charges those from 12 as adults. Cots are available: children under 2 stay free in their parents’ room with a cot, and triple and quadruple rooms take a third and fourth bed, according to the hotel’s listing on Hilton.com, the channel of its Small Luxury Hotels membership, read on 15 October 2026. The official site does not publish the charge for a child sharing a room: one Google review of June 2025 reports 190 dollars for a 5-year-old, one of October 2025 €400. Babysitting is extra, according to Mr & Mrs Smith, and children under 10 pay no tourist tax.

Is the spa included in the stay?

No, the treatments are extra; and according to Mr & Mrs Smith so are the sauna and steam room, €25 each for half an hour or €40 for both. Booking.com warns that the spa may be charged, Hotels.com that massages and treatments must be booked before arrival; the official site presents the Pura City Spa, the Zoé Cosmetics rituals and the massages, and says nothing about entry. There is a gym, small and bookable, as a guest wrote on Google in 2023.

Are there meeting rooms and Wi-Fi?

Yes to both. There are 2 meeting rooms in the courtyard pergolas: the Pergola Antichi Forni, 95 m² for 40 people, and the Pergola Arsenale, 120 m² for 70, according to the hotel’s technical sheet. Wi-Fi is free in the rooms and public areas according to Google, Booking.com and Hotels.com, and on Booking.com guests rate it 9.1 out of 10.

How many rooms does Ca’ di Dio have?

66, according to the official site, SLH and Molteni&C, who furnished them and count 57 suites and 9 Deluxe rooms: nearly the whole hotel is suites. At the opening, in October 2021, Sleeper counted 65 while listing the same 57 suites and 9 Deluxe rooms; the Michelin Guide now says 60.

Do hotel guests pay the Venice access fee?

No: the access fee is for day visitors, and in 2026 its last day was 26 July. Hotel guests pay the tourist tax instead: at Ca’ di Dio, a 5-star in the historic centre, €5 per person per night from February to December and €3.50 in January, for 5 nights at most, and half that from 10 to 16: the city’s rates in force since 1 April 2025. Idealista gives up to €7.50 in high season; in September 2026 the Corriere del Veneto reported the city’s plan to raise the 5-star rate in the historic centre to €8 or €9.

Can I drive to Ca’ di Dio, and where do I park?

Leave the car at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto and book parking there; continue to the hotel by boat.
