I wouldn’t fill every day with temples. Keep an afternoon for tea, the pond and a swim, then go out again without trying to finish the whole city. If you already know you will return only late at night, I’d choose a base closer to those evenings.

Is it for you?

For a couple, choose a garden balcony and leave an afternoon for tea without chasing one more temple.

I’d ask for
Select Four Seasons Heritage Garden Room for the balcony; book Shakusui-tei at least 14 days ahead.
Worth knowing
The private ceremony is for at least 2 resident guests and costs 30,000 JPY for 2.

  1. The window I’d choose

Choose Heritage Garden for the pond. For private outdoor time, Four Seasons Heritage Garden adds its own 4th-floor balcony.

  2. Plan the tea ceremony

Book the private Shakusui-tei ceremony before leaving home: at least 2 guests and 14 days’ notice.

  3. A kitchen for a longer stay

For a longer stay, look at the residences. A washer can be worth more than another few metres of bedroom.

What Four Seasons Kyoto is

I’d choose Heritage Garden for a trip with some slow hours built in. The garden gives you a reason to come back; a courtyard Deluxe changes the view at the window.

Residences add a kitchen and laundry for a family or a longer stay. Buy that space when you will use it. On a trip spent outside all day, the garden and hotel facilities may become little more than a backdrop.

Lumina Guide 2027

We choose the hotels of this guide ourselves, one at a time: no one pays to be in it.

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The garden brings calm to the stay; for some city outings, guests end up taking a taxi.

  2. Room

One family finds the sofa bed ready; another guest would have wanted more space for the spend.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Handwritten notes and personal touches stay with guests; another stay instead describes a taxi sent to the wrong restaurant.

  4. Breakfast

One guest remembers Japanese breakfast overlooking the garden; another waited too long for coffee.

  5. Price

For one guest, the suite and service justify the spend; for another, the food does not match the bill.

220 guests said so on Google, from 23 March 2025 to 2 November 2026. Stored Google reviews dated from 4 November 2024. Collections are bounded; the latest 500 with text are read, or every available text when fewer. The comparison includes 2 Kyoto alternatives, The Ritz-Carlton and Park Hyatt. For these hotels, we use the reviews already read by the guide, with their own collections and dates. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Kyoto:

Price: for 2, the night of 19 January 2027, from 112,000 JPY on Google Hotels on 4 November 2026.

When I’d go

I’d also compare 16 February at 113,600 JPY with 19 January’s 112,000 JPY, when the pool is closed. If swimming matters, that small difference would not persuade me to give it up. The comparison is between separate nights, without promising identical rooms or a continuous stay.

Questions before you book

Where can you eat, and is breakfast included?

EMBA KYOTO GRILL serves grilled meats, wagyu, seafood and seasonal vegetables. Breakfast is 7–10.30am for residents only; lunch 11.30am–2.30pm; dinner 5.30–10pm, last order 9pm. There is also Sushi Ginza Onodera, FUJU lounge and SEY bar. Bed and Breakfast includes breakfast for up to 2 at EMBA; it does not belong to every rate. Reserve restaurant tables separately.

What is the spa like?

The spa spans 2 levels, with 7 treatment rooms: 2 Couple’s Suites and 5 singles. Facilities include the indoor pool, whirlpools, ofuro, sauna and relaxation lounge. Treatments run 10am–9pm, last entry 8pm; minimum age is 16 for treatments, baths and steam bath. The dedicated gym information gives age 12 with adult accompaniment below 16, while the spa summary gives 16; the general age guidance conflicts.

How much does a night cost?

199,744 yen on 14 November 2026, 128,000 yen on 15 December 2026, 112,000 yen on 19 January 2027. These are minima for 2 adults, each night searched separately. They do not identify the room, breakfast, taxes or cancellation terms; those depend on the selected rate. The 112,000 yen minimum on 19 January coincides with pool maintenance: for swimming, avoid 19–21 January 2027 until the expected reopening. Prices from Google Hotels, 4 November 2026.

How many rooms are there, and when did it open?

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto opened in October 2016 around Shakusui-en garden. The inventory is 110 guest rooms, 13 suites and 57 residences, totalling 180 accommodations. The current catalogue distinguishes 14 categories; accommodation types are not room-unit counts.

Can you hold weddings or receptions?

Yes. The ballroom measures 366 m² and its venue table gives 220 banquet places. The ballroom wedding package is offered for 50–200 people. The 140 m² chapel appears with 120 in the reception-capacity column. Ceremony format and layout matter; floor area does not establish the price.

What do guests say, and is it worth it?

Google shows 4.4/5 from 1,877 ratings. A guest on 22 October 2026 praises the garden, pond and breakfast; another on 4 October likes rooms, service and restaurants while rating walkability as average. I’d pay for time spent back in the garden. For a trip needing only a base outside sightseeing hours, the rest matters less.

What is the pool like, and can children swim?

The heated indoor pool is 20 metres long, with 2 whirlpools, ofuro and sauna. General hours are 7am–9pm; from 23 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, ages 15 and under may swim 7am–6.30pm. There is no minimum pool age, but under-4s need swim nappies and under-16s need an adult. Swim caps are compulsory and provided free. Maintenance closure is 19–21 January 2027, reopening around 3pm on the 21st.

Which rooms face the garden, and which have kitchens?

Heritage Garden identifies the pond outlook. Deluxe faces the entrance courtyard; Premier faces city or courtyard. The 53 m² Four Seasons Heritage Garden has a 6 m² balcony. All 5 residence categories have kitchens and washers, spanning 83–180 m². Balconies do not belong to every suite, and Presidential has a pantry with a fridge and sink.

How much is valet parking?

Valet costs 5,000 JPY per car per night until 3pm on checkout day; hourly parking is 1,200 JPY. Dining guests receive up to 3 complimentary hours above an 8,000 JPY spend; spa, wedding and meeting guests have their own conditions. The 8–9am road restriction, except Sundays and public holidays, moves vehicle access to the residences entrance.

Where is it, and can you walk around?

At 445-3 Myohoin Maekawa-cho in Higashiyama’s temple district. Kiyomizu-dera is listed around 15 minutes on foot; Kyoto Station around 7–10 minutes by car across the hotel’s different pages. I’d choose it for temples and the garden, allowing taxis or transport for other districts. Garden and courtyard outlooks differ, without a general guarantee of silence.

Is spa access included, and can visitors buy a pass?

A treatment booking does not automatically include the Fitness Centre. For visitors, the 180-minute Day Pass costs 18,000 JPY, 7am–9pm, including pool, whirlpool, sauna, baths and relaxation lounge. The pass also lists the gym, but the dedicated Fitness information reserves facilities for residents: visitor gym eligibility conflicts. Clothing and swimwear rental costs 2,200 JPY per person. Do not assume the full spa circuit is included with every room rate.

What facilities are there, and can pets stay?

Garden, spa, pool, gym, dining, 24-hour room service, concierge, Wi-Fi and family activities. Dogs and cats are accepted in Deluxe, Premier and Premier Heritage Garden rooms under the accommodation policy. Under-18s incur no extra fee when sharing the parents’ bed, space permitting; a third-person extra bed is charged. Check-in is from 3pm and checkout by noon.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

The 31 December 2026 dinner service date and price remain unconfirmed. The dining programme offers a Festive and New Year’s Eve Buffet Dinner at EMBA, with smart-casual dress and final orders at 10.30pm. Christmas dinners and the New Year buffet are separate reservations from the room.

Are there closures to consider?

The hotel is operating and offers stays on selected dates through 2028. The pool has a specific 19–21 January 2027 closure, reopening around 3pm on the 21st.

Are there offers for longer stays?

Rediscover Kyoto – Third Night Free gives a complimentary third night with every 2 consecutive paid nights. Minimum stay is 3 nights, booked at least 7 days ahead, on selected dates from 3 November 2026 to 31 December 2028. The displayed rate already averages in the free night; do not deduct another night from the total.
