Skiing, then a swim with the lake still in front of me: that is my reason to choose Kulm. Its 150 rooms make it a grand hotel; I would look elsewhere for a small house.

Is it for you?

For 2, I would linger in the outdoor pool, with warm water and the Engadine cold around us.

I’d ask for
A treatment to combine with a swim, booked before arriving.
Worth knowing
The outdoor pool and whirlpool are at 34°C; treatments run 9am–8pm.
Steam over the outdoor pool beneath the mountains

Like a regular

  1. The mountain pass

For the winter season, the hotel offers a complimentary Ski & Mountain Pass valid for as many days as nights booked. Before travelling, I would ask how to collect and activate it alongside planning outings.

  2. Changing tables with half board

With half board, Amaru and Kulm Country Club offer a CHF 45 credit per person per night, for food only. Drinks are separate; I would reserve a table before changing the evening’s plans.

  3. Friday on the snow

On winter Fridays, I would look at Corvatsch Snow Nights: the floodlit run is 4.2 km long and the hotel lists it as free for its guests. I would coordinate the evening outing with reception.

What Kulm is

A 5-star superior in St Moritz Dorf, tracing its beginnings to the hotel Johannes Badrutt rented in 1856. Categories distinguish lake-facing from village-facing rooms, with contemporary or traditional Swiss-pine interiors. Restaurants and grand lounges sit alongside spaces for sport, children and wellness: I would choose it for several days, with different programmes even for people travelling together.1234

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Kulm Hotel St. Moritz’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Every guest who mentions it is happy with it. One guest describes the location and views as unforgettable.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest praises the bedding and reports their best sleep in any hotel.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest describes pre-arrival contact and help booking restaurants and activities.

  4. Breakfast

One guest says they are still dreaming about breakfast after the trip.

  5. Price

One guest expects easier communication with spa staff at the price paid.

167 guests said so on Google, from 30 November 2024 to 14 September 2026. 167 written reviews; 90 text-free ratings also retained. Alternatives in St Moritz. The other hotels are assessed on the same 5 themes. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in St Moritz:

Where to pause

Amaru tables among vaults and colourful walls

Peru at Amaru

At Amaru, the chef’s cooking combines Peruvian tradition and street-food influences. Luke Edward Hall’s vaulted, colourful interiors give dinner a setting of its own; I would leave a dog in the room, as dogs are not allowed at the table.1

The indoor pool and its windows towards the mountains

Morning laps

The indoor pool is 20 metres long, 10 wide and kept at 29°C. It opens 7am–8pm; I would swim a few lengths before breakfast, without waiting for the saunas to open.1

Good to know before you book

Getting here

AddressVia Veglia 18, 7500 St. Moritz

From Zurich, take the train via Chur and the Albula line. By car in winter, I would carry chains for the Julier Pass; an alternative is taking the car on the Vereina train from Klosters.1

Your day

In the morning

Breakfast at Festsaal Historic

Breakfast is served at Festsaal Historic 7am–11.30am. In the evening, the same room serves half board 7pm–9.30pm: I would stop to see the menu before returning.

After sport

The Finnish or the bio sauna

Saunas open 2pm–8pm, earlier on request. The 90°C Finnish sauna is a mixed nude area; the 65°C bio sauna is reserved for women, also without swimwear.

With children

A lesson with the Red Legends

Children can join complimentary group ski and snowboard lessons with St Moritz Ski School, the Red Legends. Registration is required: I would check availability and the right ability group before arrival.

At dinner

Dinner at Amaru

Amaru serves dinner 7pm–10pm, Tuesday–Saturday. Dress is smart casual: I would save a formal jacket for evenings that actually require one.

In the afternoon

Tea at Altitude Bar

Altitude Bar serves afternoon tea 3pm–5.30pm. The bar is non-smoking; for a cigar, the neighbouring Smoking Lounge has the same menu and windows towards the lake.
