Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong reopened on 1 October: what is open and what is still to come

The Mandarin in Central came back on 1 October, redone with more than US$100 million, and Captain’s Bar is still pouring where it has since 1963. If you’re going for tea I’d wait for 4 December, when Blake Foyer opens; for dinner almost everything is ready, and the pizza arrives on 2 November.

The Mandarin in Central, redone in 4 phases

Mandarin Oriental opened in September 1963 as The Mandarin: 650 rooms over 27 floors, the tallest building on Hong Kong Island.15 In April 2025 the group announced more than US$100 million of works12, in 4 phases, with the hotel open most of the time: the lobby and every public space redesigned by Hubert de Malherbe, rooms and suites refreshed, 11 new apartments.

The first piece came in March 2026, Terrace Boulud13 on the 25th floor of Landmark Prince’s, linked to the hotel. Then a summer behind closed doors, from 1 June to 30 September14, and on 1 October the reopening1, with the new reception and public spaces.

At table there are already 10 addresses to choose from: Man Wah, Cantonese since 1968 and Michelin-starred,8 the Mandarin Grill, the Cake Shop with its new dining room and Captain’s Bar7, in its place since 1963.

Some things, happily, don’t get renovated.

The rest arrives in stages. On 2 November The Pizza Bar4 and The Thistle and The Jade5, the whisky bar, open; on 4 December Blake Foyer6, with afternoon tea from 1pm to 6pm. The club lounge10 stays closed until 28 February 2027, and spa treatments, as of 18 October, are given at Mandarin Oriental The Landmark9, the sister hotel.

Where to stay if you need what’s still missing

3 hotels in the guide, in Central, Admiralty and Kowloon, each for a different reason.

Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong’s pool terrace overlooking Victoria Harbour

Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong

For a pool while the Mandarin’s spa is at the sister hotel: the Four Seasons, in Central, has a heated infinity pool above Victoria Harbour all year round.

The trade-off

Until 30 November 2026 the IFC escalator is closed: you go up in the lift beside Audemars Piguet.

Why choose it

It’s an 11-minute walk from the Mandarin.17

Upper House’s entrance in Admiralty

The Upper House

For a couple who like a big room: a bath beside the view and dinner on Level 49, in Admiralty.

The trade-off

You look down on the harbour: to sleep on the waterfront you need a hotel on the shore.

Why choose it

It’s a 15-minute walk from the Mandarin.17

The façade of The Peninsula Hong Kong

The Peninsula Hong Kong

For the city’s other grande dame, across the harbour: the Peninsula dates from 1928, in Tsim Sha Tsui, with rooms from 41 m² and an indoor pool over the harbour.

The trade-off

The lobby is always busy: the afternoon-tea crowd passes through too.

Why choose it

It’s 27 minutes from the Mandarin on foot with the Star Ferry, or 10 by car.17

Walking and driving minutes on OpenStreetMap, the ferry included; the rest from each hotel’s page in the guide, each with its date.17
