The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai is the 1903 hotel on Apollo Bunder facing the Gateway of India, with 285 rooms and suites in the historic building, its old salons and the bar that holds the city’s first licence.
A week here, month by monthThe Taj suits travellers who want 2 or 3 nights in a sea-view Palace wing room, with afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge and the heritage walk, from INR 25,697 for one night taken alone on Google. For the northern business districts or a dawn flight, I would allow an hour’s drive.

Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
The Luxury Grande Room Sea View sits on the middle floors of the Palace wing, with a bay window on the Arabian Sea in its 33 m². I would ask for it for that view, which the same-size Luxury Room does without.
From 7 to 10 November 2026, each night taken alone for 2 adults was INR 25,697 on Google, read on 17 October 2026. The dearest night taken alone, 30 January 2027, was INR 67,124.
The spa menu prices its treatments before government taxes. A treatment in your room adds INR 1,500, and no cross-gender treatment is given in the room.
Afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge runs in 2 sittings, from 2pm to 4pm and from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, by prior reservation only. I would book it with the room.
The Taj opened on 16 December 1903 to 17 guests; 20 years later the Gateway of India rose beside it. According to Taj’s own history, the 10 pillars of the Ballroom were ordered in the same steel as the Eiffel Tower, and in 1960 a sixth floor was slipped in between the fifth and the roof without raising the building. After the attacks of 26 November 2008 the Palace wing reopened on 15 August 2010; more than 4,000 works of art hang in its corridors and rooms.
The 285 rooms and suites sold as The Taj Mahal Palace are all in the 1903 building; the Tower next door, from 1973, is a hotel of its own, Taj Mahal Tower. Rooms start with the 33 m² Luxury Rooms, which have no windows. Luxury Grande Rooms, the same size, have a bay window: over the pool or the city from the second to the fourth floor, over the sea on the middle floors. Taj Club Rooms, 37 m² and for 2 guests, add the lounge, breakfast and an airport transfer. At the top of the scale is the Tata Suite: 465 m², 2 bedrooms, a meeting room for 15, its own gym and sauna.
Evenings are spent in rooms with a past. The Harbour Bar holds Mumbai’s first licence, from 1933; at the Sea Lounge afternoon tea is a buffet served from 2pm to 6.30pm with the Gateway in the windows; Loya cooks the north of India, Golden Dragon Sichuan and Cantonese, Wasabi by Morimoto Japanese. Some guests, between November 2025 and June 2026, write that the lobby is always full of passing visitors.

What do The Taj Mahal Palace’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. On the water, facing the Gateway of India: guests write of the harbour view and of Colaba on foot; those arriving by car find stopping on the busy road outside the hotel awkward.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Clean, comfortable rooms with period furnishings; the ones guests remember most face the sea, with the Gateway in the window.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember the staff by name, the hotel’s heritage walk and the butlers; others write of a lobby full of visitors and of waits in the restaurants.
Breakfast is liked for the range of the buffet and for the room with its view of the Gateway of India.
Guests call it expensive, and many add that it is worth it at least once; Loya’s portions and the size of the room are what they find small for the price.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 11 October 2023 to 16 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Mumbai: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 17 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in Mumbai:
