Principe di Savoia closing for restoration: last night 27 December, reopening in 2029

The Principe di Savoia turns 100 behind closed doors: the last night on sale is 27 December, and it returns in 2029 with 120 rooms instead of 301. If you pictured New Year’s Eve on Piazza della Repubblica, picture it somewhere else.

A century, then the builders

The Principe di Savoia opened on 6 April 19273, near Milan’s central station, and it will reach its centenary closed for works. On 8 July 2026 Dorchester Collection announced1 the restoration: the hotel suspends business and reopens during 2029.

The closing day doesn’t quite agree. July’s release said 1 January; Corriere della Sera3 on 17 October says 28 December. Google Hotels points the same way as the Corriere: on 18 October the last night with a price was 27 December, and after that, for months, there wasn’t one.4

It will come back a different hotel: much larger rooms and suites, private residences, a wellness area and a rooftop over Milan.1 Rooms go from about 300 to 120, with ten or so private apartments; «they will be bigger, starting from 60 square metres instead of 30», the general manager says, and a restaurant takes the spa’s place on the top floor.3

Half the world has passed through, from Queen Elizabeth to the Rolling Stones. In 2000 the Queen stayed for 3 days, in the suite with the Pompeian spa, and brought her favourite tea from Britain, the general manager remembers.3

Impeccable service is one thing; a queen’s tea is quite another.

Until 27 December the Principe stays the one you know: 301 rooms and suites, the Presidential Suite with its Pompeian spa and private pool, and on the tenth floor Club 10, with the indoor pool and Milan through the windows.2

Where to stay in Milan while the Principe is closed

3 hotels in the guide, a 13 and 21-minute walk from Piazza della Repubblica, each for a different reason.

The Excelsior Hotel Gallia’s façade lit up at night, on Piazza Duca d’Aosta

Excelsior Hotel Gallia

If you arrive by train and used to go up to Club 10: at the Gallia, the 1932 palazzo facing the central station, you swim on the seventh floor under a skylight.

The trade-off

For the Duomo and Brera you need the metro or the shuttle to La Scala.

Why choose it

Pool, hot tub and gym come with the stay; the spa asks you to book your slot. It’s a 13-minute walk from the Principe.5

Palazzo Parigi’s façade onto its private garden, with the gilded fountain and tables in front of the glass doors

Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand Spa

For a palazzo with a garden and a spa: towards Brera, rooms and suites have balconies, over the garden or the city, and the Grand Spa is free for guests.

The trade-off

Garden or city, Milanese or Parisian style: choose the room carefully, before you arrive.

Why choose it

Parking is added to the rate, €50 a day. It’s a 13-minute walk from the Principe.5

Portrait Milano’s Piazza at dusk, with people under the portico

Portrait Milano

For a Milan you do on foot: a former seminary in the Quadrilatero, open onto its own Piazza, with the spa under the vaults.

The trade-off

The Piazza belongs to everyone, evenings included: for quiet, ask for a garden room.

Why choose it

La Scala is a 9-minute walk; the Principe is 21.5
