Luxury ski-in ski-out hotels: how far you really walk to the lift

I would book W Verbier: guests say you ski back to the door, and the ski valet is free. Gstaad Palace’s lifts are a 19-minute walk.

Chosen your hotel? Everything you need to go

8 hotels, from a piste at the door to a 19-minute walk

Shortest walk first, each with its first lift or piste, what happens to your skis and a night’s price.

The Matterhorn in winter, with snow on the forest below it.

Riffelalp Resort 2’222m

For skiers who want to click in outside the hotel and sleep high above Zermatt.

The trade-off

The train stop is 8 minutes away on foot, so a night in Zermatt ends with that walk2, and the skidoo stops at 10.30pm.

Why choose it

The run from Gornergrat down to Zermatt passes the hotel1, so you click in outside and ski back to the bar. The in-house guide’s days start in the ski room at 9.15am, 4 days a week. You arrive on the Gornergrat train, your bags go by electric skidoo2 and you walk the last 8 minutes through the forest. A guest in March 20265 calls that walk a short hike on the slope and says the snowmobiles also carry guests, so ask whether you can ride. The hotel opens on 11 December 20264. A night for 2 costs $1,0296.

Loungers in a relaxation room facing windows over the lake and mountains.

Suvretta House

For families in St. Moritz, with a private lift by the hotel and a children’s ski slope8 just above it.

The trade-off

A guest in August 2023 calls it a bit out of town12, and I have no 7-night price to set beside the others.

Why choose it

The hotel says it has a private ski lift7 and ski-in, ski-out access to the Corviglia area. A lift called Suvretta11 is 92 metres from the hotel, 1 minute on foot, and a guest in April 2025 writes of steps away12. Another, in December 2025, found a ski room with a locker for every skier. The Sports Alpine Centre9 rents, repairs and services equipment. A single night on 18 January 2027 costs $1,85413. Sunny Ski Out10 sells 7 nights from 20 to 27 March 2027 from CHF 7,700 for a double, with half board, group lessons, a ski pass, service and taxes.

W Verbier’s timber chalets under deep snow at sunset, with the peaks behind them.

W Verbier

For skiers who want the gondola, the run home and a lively bar within one short walk, and it is the one I would book.

The trade-off

Several guests fault the service16 in 2025 and 2026, though most still give 5 stars, so read the recent reviews.

Why choose it

The hotel calls itself ski-in/ski-out14, just steps from the main Verbier lifts. A guest in March 202616 puts the gondola about 50 metres from the ski room, and another, in January 2024, skied straight to the front door. The Médran station is 243 metres away15, 3 minutes on foot. The ski valet and equipment storage are free14, and your boots get warmed. A night for 2 costs $1,55217.

CERVO’s sauna, with a long window onto snow-covered firs and roofs.

CERVO Mountain Resort

For friends who want the ski day to end on a terrace in Zermatt, with après-ski from 3pm21.

The trade-off

This is the dearest week here, and a guest who skis elsewhere says the hotel suits the Sunnegga side23.

Why choose it

CERVO calls itself a ski-in/ski-out hotel18, and its 2 terraces sit at the end of the slope19. Skiing in is the easy half. Going out, a guest23 writes of 2 minutes on foot up the road in January 2025, and another calls it ski in and almost ski out. The Sunnegga funicular is 243 metres away22, 3 minutes on foot. Leave your skis in the ski room20 overnight and they come back serviced for CHF 45 or CHF 55. A night for 2 costs $1,98224.

A table for 2 on the Wild Cabin terrace, in the snow.

Six Senses Crans-Montana

For confident skiers who want a Terrace Room over the last turn of the day and a spa straight after it.

The trade-off

The way in and out is a red slope25, so if reds worry you, ask how else to get back to the hotel.

Why choose it

The hotel sits just above the main gondola25 in Crans, with direct ski-in and ski-out on the Chetzeron red slope, and its Terrace Rooms and Suites face the piste’s final turn. The Crans station is 268 metres away26, 4 minutes on foot, and a guest in March 202527 warns that the exit is on the far side of the hotel, so it is a bit of a walk. Another that month liked the boot room and ski shop. In April 2026 a guest found 1 person in the ski room for many clients, so I would go down early. A night for 2 costs $1,36228.

The Chedi’s courtyard with its lit water at dusk, timber façades and mountains.

The Chedi Andermatt

For skiers who will trade a short walk for butlers who deal with the kit, and for one dinner at The Japanese33.

The trade-off

You do walk to the gondola: guests call it ski-in, the hotel does not.

Why choose it

The Ski Butler Team29 stores your equipment, maintains it and transports it to the slopes and local ski areas. The Gütsch-Express is 290 metres away34, 4 minutes on foot. A guest in August 202635 says 3 minutes, and another, that June, calls the hotel basically ski in and ski out because of it. The Midweek Ski Escape32 puts 1 ski pass per adult per night in the rate on midweek stays from 11 to 22 January 2027. A night for 2 costs $1,30036.

The façade of Badrutt’s Palace in winter, with its windows lit, pointed green roofs and a snow-covered mountain behind.

Badrutt’s Palace

For a week in the middle of St. Moritz, with the skiing as one part of it.

The trade-off

Every ski day starts with a walk or the shuttle.

Why choose it

The funicular to Chantarella and Corviglia is 338 metres away40, 5 minutes on foot. The hotel37 runs a free shuttle to the cable car and has a ski shop and rental inside. It opens on 3 December 202638. On Stay Longer39, 15% comes off from 7 nights and a ski pass costs a reduced CHF 45, so ask for how many days. In March a night for 2 costs $1,91641.

The palace lit up at blue hour in winter, its towers above the snow-covered chalet roofs of Gstaad, with ski slopes on the mountain behind.

Gstaad Palace

For a winter in a palace above the village, with skiing on the days you feel like it.

The trade-off

This is the longest walk here by far, and I would not make it in boots, so settle the ride with the concierge before you arrive.

Why choose it

On foot the Eggli lifts47 are 1,453 metres away, 19 minutes, and the Wispile lifts48 1,709 metres, 23 minutes. The shuttle42 goes to the village, so ask whether it stops at the lifts and where your skis stay. In the evening the dress code keeps hiking and snow shoes42 out of the restaurants and bars. The season runs from 15 December 2026 to 7 March 202743. A night for 2 costs $1,68849.

Walks are from OpenStreetMap, on a clear path. Prices are a night for 2 on a 7-night stay from 18 January 2027, with taxes; Badrutt’s Palace’s stay starts on 15 March 2027, and Suvretta House’s is the single night of 18 January, which may not include tax. Prices from Google Hotels, 13 to 23 October 2026.

What decides how far you walk

2 hotels can both say ski-in, ski-out and hand you very different mornings. These 4 things tell them apart.

  • Which way you are going. Skiing in and skiing out are 2 separate walks. At CERVO the terraces sit at the end of the slope19, and a guest still counts 2 minutes up the road23 to the lifts.

  • Where you start counting. W Verbier is 243 metres15 from the Médran station, while a guest who starts at the ski room writes about 5016. Ask which door the ski room opens onto.

  • Who carries the skis. At W Verbier14 the valet and the storage are free and your boots get warmed. At The Chedi29 the ski butlers store your equipment and transport it to the slopes.

  • The run home. Six Senses Crans-Montana25 brings you back on the Chetzeron red slope, and a run that colour decides whether the last turn is a pleasure or a worry.

What to settle before you pay

3 things a night’s price leaves out.

The doors open on different days. Badrutt’s Palace38 opens on 3 December 2026, Riffelalp4 on 11 December and Gstaad Palace43 on 15 December, while W Verbier14 says it stays open all year. A hotel’s opening date tells you nothing about the lifts, so check those before you book the first week.

A ski pass can change the sum. The Chedi32 puts 1 pass per adult per night into its midweek offer from 11 to 22 January 2027. Badrutt’s Palace39 sells one at a reduced CHF 45 on Stay Longer, so ask for how many days. Suvretta House10 puts one in Sunny Ski Out, with 6 days of group lessons.

The map’s minutes are for shoes. In ski boots, with skis on your shoulder, I would allow more. At Forestis in the Dolomites a guest in October 2023 had the choice of a 5-minute walk or a 1-minute shuttle, and wrote that in ski boots the downhill road50 is “not a very pleasant walk”.

Questions before you book the week

The walk, the skis and who each hotel suits.

How far do you really walk to the lift at a luxury ski-in ski-out hotel?

At these 8, from a piste at the door at Riffelalp1 to 19 minutes at Gstaad Palace47. Suvretta House11 is 1 minute from its lift, W Verbier15 and CERVO22 3, Six Senses26 and The Chedi34 4, and Badrutt’s Palace40 5.

Which of these hotels say they are ski-in, ski-out?

5 of the 8: Riffelalp3, Suvretta House7, W Verbier14, CERVO18 and Six Senses Crans-Montana25. The Chedi, Badrutt’s Palace and Gstaad Palace do not claim it.

Can you ski from Badrutt’s Palace?

I would count on no. The funicular is 338 metres away40, 5 minutes on foot, and the hotel37 offers a free shuttle to the cable car.

Which St. Moritz hotel has its own ski lift?

Suvretta House7 says it has a private ski lift and calls itself the only ski-in, ski-out hotel in St. Moritz with private access to the Corviglia area. I would take that as the hotel’s claim and ask which lift you start on.

Which hotel takes the most off your hands?

W Verbier14 gives you a free ski valet, free storage and boot warming. The Chedi29 has a ski butler team that transports your equipment to the slopes. CERVO20 services skis overnight for CHF 45 or CHF 55.

Which of these suits young children?

I would choose Suvretta House8: the children’s slope is just above the hotel, gently inclined, with a race every week. I would leave the red run home at Six Senses25 to older skiers.

How do I get my luggage to Riffelalp in winter?

An electric skidoo2 takes it from Riffelalp station while you walk 8 minutes through the forest. After 10.30pm the skidoo stops, so a late return from Zermatt means walking.

An independent Lumina selection. Hotels do not pay to appear, and Lumina takes no booking commission.
