Gstaad hotels: the Palace and the village’s other hotels, open and closed, compared

Would you go?

Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.

Like a regular

The palace in summer on its wooded hill, with turrets and flags, green pastures and a pointed peak behind and chalet roofs below
  1. A balcony above Gstaad

I would ask for a Deluxe Room Mountain View: 46–55 m², with a balcony over the garden and mountains, plus a corner lounge for afternoons when you would rather stay upstairs.

  2. Late January costs less

Read on 13 October 2026, the nights of 24–26 January 2027 cost €1,761–1,815 each, searched separately for 2 adults; the dearest night shown is 1 February, at €3,377.

  3. A roof for the car

If you drive, outdoor parking is free; a space indoors costs CHF 25 per car per day, or CHF 35 per electric car per day with charging included.

  4. A jacket for dinner

Pack a jacket for the evening: from 7pm the hotel asks men to wear one in Le Grill, the Bar du Grill and the veranda section of Le Grand.

What the Palace is

When the railway reached Gstaad, a village schoolteacher dreamed up a hotel on the hill. The Palace opened there in 1913, and the village has been looking up at it, towers and all, ever since. You can spend a whole evening inside, from fondue in a former bank vault at La Fromagerie to music at GreenGo, a club here since 1971; but only in season, from 15 December 2026 to 7 March 2027 and from 20 June to 5 September 2027.

The Palace holds almost the whole of Gstaad in season. The spa, rebuilt in 2007, covers 1,800 m²: the 29°C indoor pool is the one from «The Return of the Pink Panther», the outdoor pool is kept at 36.5°C, and in summer you swim in the «PISCINE», a 50-metre pool from 1928 that is open to the public too. There are 5 restaurants to choose from, from La Fromagerie, in the vault where a Swiss bank kept its gold during the war, to the Walig hut at 1,700 metres; and at night there is the GreenGo, the 1971 club, still with the furniture of the day.

The rate covers breakfast, CHF 100 per person a day to spend on lunch or dinner, the spa and the shuttle down to the village. Guests love the building, the atmosphere and the food, and the MICHELIN Guide gives it Two Keys; the prices are those of a palace in Gstaad, from CHF 1,150 to 1,800 a night in winter for the Cosy Room, and drinks are extra. And the calendar rules: out of season the hotel shuts, and its spa and restaurants with it.

The Palace reopens on 15 December, so meanwhile we studied it from afar. We collected the 1,126 reviews left on Google since 2012, 541 of them with text, read 45 pages of the hotel’s website and mapped 14 walks, each between a hotel and the Promenade, the station or a lift. One image keeps returning in what guests write: 15 speak of a castle or a fairy tale, every one of them with 5 stars. One guest recalls how their grandparents, for years, made them believe it was Father Christmas’s castle, so they would behave.

One Lume

Lumina Guide 2027

Gives more than the other hotels of its place and price range.

Gstaad Palace has looked down on the village from its hill since 1913, and its indoor pool is the one in The Return of the Pink Panther.

How Lumi are awarded
  • Guests

500 reviews read: the location pleases almost every guest who mentions it, the room nearly 9 in 10. Too few voices on breakfast so far (18) to say more.

  • Critics

  • Ours (exceptional)

We found a rate that covers breakfast, the 1,800 m² spa and CHF 100 a head each day at table, 5 restaurants with 16 GaultMillau points at Le Grill and, in summer, the 50-metre pool of 1928.

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

On the hill above the Promenade, looking out over the whole village: the centre is 7 minutes’ walk down, or a ride on the shuttle.

  2. Character

A turreted palace of 1913, a wartime vault converted to fondue, the 1971 GreenGo and the 1928 «PISCINE».

  3. Rooms

90 rooms and suites in 13 categories, from the 28 m² Cosy Room to the 240 m² Penthouse with its roof terrace.

  4. Food and social life

5 restaurants, with 16 GaultMillau points at Le Grill and 15 at Le Grand, and CHF 100 a head each day already in the rate.

  5. Wellness

1,800 m² of granite and firelight: the 29°C indoor pool, the 36.5°C outdoor pool, the hammam and, in summer, the 50-metre pool.

  6. The stay as a whole

Gstaad in high season without ever going out at night: this is the classic choice. In the other months, look elsewhere.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Gstaad Palace’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests remember the Alps seen from the castle on the hill above Gstaad, with the village a few minutes’ walk below.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about big rooms, all fabric and wood, with the mountains at the window.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Staying guests write about the warmth of the staff and about the spa, 1,800 m² with its indoor pool and the heated outdoor pool.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is included and served at Le Grand from 7 to 11am: guests describe a varied buffet, with à la carte dishes ordered at the table.

  5. Price

The rate covers breakfast, the spa and CHF 100 per person a day for lunch or dinner at Le Grand; drinks are extra.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 11 August 2017 to 26 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Gstaad: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

What to expect

The gold vault turned fondue restaurant, a 1971 club still in its original furniture, 5 restaurants, a 1,800 m² spa and the open-air pool of 1928.

The spa’s indoor pool: pale blue tiles, columns, loungers with pink cushions, palms and a lit timber ceiling

The spa

Blausee granite on the walls and a fire burning, across 1,800 m²: the 29°C indoor pool, the hot pool outdoors, separate saunas for women and men and a hammam taken in 7 steps.

The «PISCINE» in summer: the long open-air pool, its round pavilion and the palace behind, with a woman in a sun hat sitting on the edge

The «PISCINE»

50 metres of heated water in the open air, since 1928, with a round pavilion and its own bar. In summer, from 10am to 7pm, non-residents can swim too.

La Fromagerie: the carved sign on the wooden door, the stone vault with the raclette fire, a buffet and stacked logs

La Fromagerie and the rest

Fondue and raclette where a bank’s gold slept out the war; then Le Grill’s rotisserie, Gildo’s Italian cooking and, at 1,700 metres, the Walig hut, from 1783.

The GreenGo club: round tables with ice buckets, glasses and the club’s menu under green light beams and amber lanterns

The GreenGo

The house nightclub opened on 22 January 1971 and, a few gentle touch-ups aside, still has the interior Teo Jakob designed. Its resident DJ brings in international names.

When is the Palace open?

For 2 seasons: 15 December 2026 to 7 March 2027 and 20 June to 5 September 2027. Summer 2026 ended on 6 September, and until 15 December the hotel is closed, along with its spa and restaurants; the «PISCINE», the outdoor pool, opens only in summer, in 2026 from 26 June to the end of August.

What is the spa like, and can visitors use it?

Yes, visitors can come in, for CHF 120 a day, to a spa of 1,800 m². Rebuilt in 2007 with granite from the Blausee, it has the 29°C indoor pool, open 8.30am to 8pm, the 36.5°C outdoor pool with the mountain view, separate saunas and steam rooms for women and men, a 7-step hammam (the price list counts 6), a private spa suite for 2, the relaxation room with its fireplace and a garden. It is included for hotel guests; visitors do best to book, or come in free with a treatment of at least 60 minutes according to the spa page, 50 according to the day-spa page. The spa is open only when the hotel is. Booking.com gives it «12,625 ft²», about 1,170 m²: the hotel says 1,800.

What do treatments cost?

A massage costs CHF 230 for 60 minutes and CHF 280 for 75 on the May 2026 price list; a couples’ massage CHF 460 and 580; the Kobido facial CHF 260 and 300; the 2-hour hammam ritual CHF 480 alone and CHF 690 for 2; the spa’s private suite CHF 300 to 600. The products are Jardin des Monts, Augustinus Bader, Sisley, I.D. Swiss Botanicals and Shiva Ananda. You can cancel up to 24 hours ahead; after that the treatment is charged.

What is the outdoor pool like, and is it heated?

Heated, yes, and 50 metres long: the «PISCINE» was built in 1928, with a round pavilion and its own bar. It is open only in summer, in 2026 from 26 June to the end of August according to its own page (the room pages say July and August), 10am to 7pm in good weather, and to non-residents too: on the 2025 price list entry cost CHF 14 for an adult and CHF 9 for children aged 4 to 12. The hotel publishes no water temperature. In winter you swim in the spa’s 29°C indoor pool.

Which restaurants are there, and is there a dress code?

5 in winter, plus the bars. Le Grand & La Terrasse, 15 GaultMillau points, serves breakfast from 7am to 11am, lunch from 12.30pm to 2.30pm and dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm; Le Grill, the rotisserie, 16 points, dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm; Gildo’s, Italian, has seatings at 7pm and 9.30pm and is in the MICHELIN Guide’s selection; La Fromagerie serves fondue, truffle fondue among them, and raclette in the old vault; the Walig hut, at 1,700 metres, takes 4 to 14 guests. Then there are the Lobby Bar, 10am to 1am, the Bar du Grill and the GreenGo. From 7pm men wear a jacket at Le Grill, its bar and Le Grand’s veranda. The hotel’s own pages do not agree on the count: the facts page says «6 restaurants and 4 bars», the May 2024 terms «five restaurants and two bars».

Is there half board?

No, there is no fixed half board. The rate includes breakfast and CHF 100 per person a day to spend on lunch or dinner at Le Grand or from room service, CHF 50 at Le Grill, Gildo’s or La Fromagerie. Drinks are extra.

What are the rooms and suites like?

There are 90, in 13 categories, each with something of its own, a patio, a balcony, a corner turret or a whirlpool, and all with a panoramic view, the hotel says. The Cosy Room starts at 28 m² and faces north, over the Oberbort, Schönried and the Rellerli; the Deluxe Rooms Mountain View, 46 to 55 m², have a balcony over the village or the garden; the Alpine Suite measures 72 m², the Corner Suite 92, the Tower Two Bedroom Suite 190. The Penthouse Suite, 240 m², has a 150 m² roof terrace with a hot tub, a sauna in the turret and air conditioning, which the other room pages do not mention: a September 2026 review says the other rooms do not have it yet and that the hotel is installing it, an August one that every room does.

How far is the golf course?

Just under half an hour by car: Golfclub Gstaad-Saanenland, at Saanenmöser, is 13.4 km by road, 24 minutes without traffic; the tourist office and Google say 19 km. The hotel sells no golf package, and the club does not list it among its partner hotels; the green fee is CHF 130 for 18 holes, with a handicap of 45 or better, and tee times are booked on the club’s website.

Where is the hotel, and is it quiet?

At Palacestrasse 28, on the Oberbort hill above the village, and in peace: the tourist office rates the position as quiet, on the hillside, with especially quiet rooms. The Promenade is 7 minutes’ walk, 561 metres, and the station 12, 902 metres; the tourist office says the centre and the station are 8 minutes’ walk away. The hotel’s shuttle goes down to the village and is included in the rate, and the hotel collects guests from the station. Inside the hotel, though, is its own nightclub, the GreenGo.

How do you get to the pistes?

On foot or by shuttle: the Wispile cable car leaves 23 minutes’ walk away, 1,709 metres, and the Eggli one 19, 1,453 metres. Excursions and transfers are arranged by the concierge, at concierge@palace.ch.

Does the hotel hold a New Year’s Eve celebration?

Yes, every year. In 2025 the 31 December gala was called «Vintage Circus», with the cowbells of the Treichler Club Gsteig at midnight. The last published prices are those of 2024: CHF 1,250 per person for hotel guests, CHF 1,450 for non-residents, CHF 600 and 700 for children under 12, in evening dress. The 2026 theme and price are not published yet; for a New Year stay you arrive by 26 December and leave no earlier than 3 January.

Can you hold a wedding at the Palace?

Yes, for 10 to 300 guests: the Salle Baccarat, 240 m², seats 230 for dinner and 300 for a reception; the Palace Garden, about 800 m², has 250 to 300 seats for a ceremony, 400 for dinner and 700 for a reception. In some periods you can rent the whole hotel, for at least 2 nights.
