The brine pool
Salt water at 35°C, jets, bubble loungers and a glass wall you swim straight through, out to the mountains. From 7.30am to 9pm.
At Ermitage in Schönried you slip into the water indoors and swim out into the open, facing the mountains: the brine pool at 35°C runs through the glass. Then it is back upstairs for afternoon cake in one of 8 Stuben.
A week here, month by monthFor a stay shaped by guided walks and the spa, Google’s lowest seller showed one night taken alone from €412 for 2 adults. Choose a more central base for Gstaad’s Promenade.
Spa hotel in the Alps: the Ermitage’s pools and saunas, their hours and what they costWould you go?
Keep it among your hotels and see it on the budget globe, month by month.
I would ask for the Gstaad Junior Suite in Chalet Saane: 40 m², a sitting area and a balcony overlooking the park and the mountains, with both a bath and a shower.
For 6–10 December 2026, one night taken alone cost €412–426 on Google, read on 13 October; the dearest shown was €857 on 28 January 2027. For 16–23 November booked together, the lowest listing asked €788 a night.
The ERMITAGE Dîner, served from 7pm to 9pm under the gourmet half-board plan, excludes drinks. Smoothies, freshly squeezed orange juice and flavoured coffees from the Juice Bar are also charged separately.
The sauna area is mixed and swimwear is not permitted; guests aged 16–18 must be accompanied by an adult. Women can also use the separate Ladies’ Spa, with its bio sauna and steam bath.
Ermitage opened in 1955 as a golf hotel and ended up falling for the water and the Schönried plateau. Its emblem today is a brine pool that runs through a glass wall, from the warmth indoors to the open air in front of the mountains. Everything else moves at the pace of home: proper lengths in the sports pool, then afternoon cake in one of the Stuben.
The water is the reason to come, and it has a story. The brine in the 35°C pool comes from the Schweizerhalle saltworks, which draw it from as deep as 400 metres, about as salty as the Mediterranean; jets, bubble loungers and a standing whirlpool do the rest. Next door the outdoor sports pool, 17 metres by 10, is fed by a Schönried spring and kept at 28–29°C in summer and 31°C in winter, so you can swim outside while it snows. There are 4 saunas and 3 steam rooms in a mixed area where swimwear stays off; women have a Ladies’ Spa of their own. Hotel guests use all of it free, before check-in and after check-out too.
Three-quarter board is in the rate, and the day is eaten in stages: a breakfast buffet, soup and salad at lunch, cakes in the afternoon with a pianist playing, and dinner with a choice of dishes in one of 8 Stuben, each dining room furnished its own way, from the Füürgruebe with its open fire to the red-and-white Kranich-Stube; drinks are extra. The rooms, 96 according to Tripadvisor, are panelled in wood and nearly all have a balcony: in the Ried Superior rooms, junior suites and suites it faces the park, and the junior suites look out to the mountains too. Guests praise the spa, the staff, the guided walks and the breakfast.
Guests have been writing about the Ermitage on Google since 2012. We collected all 892 of their reviews, 520 of them with text, and counted what guests mention; along the way we read 45 pages of the hotel’s website and its scores on Booking.com and Tripadvisor, and chose 8 video clips by 4 makers. The tally made us smile. The brine pool, the hotel’s emblem, comes up in 25 reviews. The afternoon cakes come up in 30.

At Ermitage in Schönried you slip into the water indoors and swim out into the open, facing the mountains: the brine pool at 35°C runs through the glass.
How we choose the hotelsWhat we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.
Everything close at hand on the Schönried plateau: the station 4 minutes’ walk away, the Horneggli chairlift 6, and Gstaad 10 minutes by train or car.
Chalet upon chalet, grown since 1955 around the water, with themed Stuben, an open fire and a bar that glitters with a million Swarovski crystals.
Wood and balconies nearly everywhere, from 16 m² singles to the 87 m² family suite with a kitchen; there is no air conditioning.
Three-quarter board is included and caters for vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs; dinner, part buffet and part set dishes, is served in one of 8 Stuben.
The Saanenland’s largest spa by the hotel’s count, 3,700 m², with the 35°C brine pool, the outdoor sports pool open all year, 7 saunas and steam rooms and the Vitalità treatment rooms.
A safe bet for a few days of spa and mountains with meals included; Gstaad’s social whirl is 10 minutes down the line.
What do Ermitage’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Schönried, where the pool faces the mountains and the station is close by: Gstaad is 10 minutes away by train.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about clean, homely rooms panelled in wood, and the balcony with its view of the mountains.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The spa is what guests write about most, from the saunas to the brine pool; the staff and the walks with the hotel’s guides recur too.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Every morning a buffet that lacks nothing, mountain cheeses included; at four the cakes arrive, already covered by the room rate.
5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. The rate covers three-quarter board, the spa and the walks with the hotel’s guides; drinks and the garage are charged separately.
On breakfast it comes ahead of the 4 other hotels it is compared with in Gstaad.
On the bill it comes ahead of the 4 other hotels it is compared with in Gstaad.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 7 March 2017 to 26 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Gstaad: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in Gstaad:
Price: for two on the night of 9 December 2026, from €412 (seen on Google Hotels on 13 October 2026).
For one night taken alone, November and early December showed €412–426, against €647–857 from mid-January to late March 2027. I would compare the price of the complete stay before choosing dates: for 16–23 November 2026 booked together, Google’s lowest seller asked €788 a night.
| Period | Euros a night |
|---|---|
| 14 Oct–1 Nov 2026 | 417–670 |
| 2 November to 17 December 2026 | 412–426 |
| 20 Dec 2026–11 Jan 2027 | 495–588 |
| 12 January to 24 March 2027 | 647–857 |
| 30 March to 7 September 2027 | 428–632 |
Lowest seller shown on Google for one night searched alone for 2 adults, read 13 October 2026; no room or meal plan is specified. The calendar stops on 7 September 2027; missing prices do not establish availability. The separate high night is 8 January 2027 at €844; the low nights on 12 and 29 July 2027 are €428 and €433. In the earlier reading of 27 September 2026, both the lowest seller and the hotel’s own listing showed €401 for 9 December 2026 in the Plani Compact with breakfast only. Booked as 7 nights from 16 November 2026, the lowest seller Google listed on 13 October asked €788 a night.
The outdoor brine pool in the snow and in summer, the sports pool and the sauna, then a suite, the pools lit up at night from a room, the grill on the terrace, the breakfast buffet, and the mountain meadows by e-bike and on foot.

2 pools that stay open to the sky all year, 7 saunas and steam rooms, 8 Stuben for dinner and a bar lit by a million crystals.

Salt water at 35°C, jets, bubble loungers and a glass wall you swim straight through, out to the mountains. From 7.30am to 9pm.

17 metres by 10 of spring water, outdoors all year: 28–29°C in summer and 31°C in winter, when it steams in the frost.

The 90°C panorama sauna, with infusions at 4.30pm and 6.30pm; the Schnapsbrennerei, where the infusions are poured from an old still; the Swiss stone pine sanarium and 3 steam rooms.

8 dining rooms, no 2 alike, with dinner from 7pm to 9pm. In winter the Fondue Spycher joins them, and a fondue gondola in the garden.
Three-quarter board does not include drinks; the indoor garage costs CHF 15 a night, CHF 25 in high season, from 22 December 2026 to 27 March 2027. Source: ermitage.ch
In the saunas men and women mix, and nobody wears swimwear, as is usual in German-speaking countries; 16 to 18-year-olds need an adult with them. The pools are a separate area, and women who would rather be among themselves have the Ladies’ Spa, with a bio sauna and a steam room.
There is no air conditioning in the rooms: Google lists it as missing, and no room page mentions it. In July and August, bear that in mind.
A weekend here is never a one-nighter: a single night starting on a Friday or Saturday cannot be booked. In Google Hotels’ price calendar, read on 27 September 2026 as far as August 2027, those nights were empty every week, and from 22 December to 3 January no single night had a price.
For CHF 35 a night, food not included, a dog even gets a shower of its own; but, the hotel writes on its room pages, it may stay in the room only.

A solo traveller, a birthday among friends, a walk at dawn: 5 stays between July and September 2026, from regulars of many years and first-timers.
2 autumn nights travelling alone: he felt well cared for, found the spa above average and the food very good.
A regular guest celebrated a milestone birthday with a group of friends: besides the food and the spa, he remembers a concert in the Gstaad festival tent and the reception in the Ermitage lounge there.
A first stay, as a couple: what struck them were the guided walks, rarely offered elsewhere, and they recommend the sunrise walk, which sets off at 4.20am.
A couple in August: the 2 large pools, the saunas, the best breakfast buffet in years with eggs cooked to order, and unbeatable value at that time of year.
A family in July: a quiet, modern hotel with a gym, a games room and a cinema; the one disappointment was food below the hotel’s standard.
The practical side of the trip, read across every source on 27 and 28 September 2026.

Gemini, in a conversation from September 2026, described an indoor sports pool at 29–30°C: the sports pool is outdoors.

On 21 October and 16 December the official site was not selling, and the lowest price was €531 and €612, on Wego. Saturday nights had no prices, and neither did 22 December to 3 January. Prices are per room, with VAT and the local tax; cancellation is free up to 31 days ahead, between 30 and 8 days you pay at most 3 nights, and from 7 days the whole stay if the room is not resold. For 7 nights from 16 to 23 November booked together, the lowest seller on Google asked €788 a night.

Booking.com says every room has a balcony with a view: the Plani Compact has one only on request, and the Hugeli singles face the street.
Yes. The pool price list says «open all year», with 7 maintenance days whose dates it does not give, and on Google Hotels, read on 27 September 2026, weekday nights could be booked from October to December. Only the Fondue Spycher is seasonal, from mid-December to mid-March. In the price calendar, though, single nights from 2 April to 1 May 2027 were empty, and the hotel publishes no closure: in spring 2026 it was open, with an Easter package from 2 to 6 April.

Booking.com puts the course about 10 km away, and «within 2 miles» on the same page; ChatGPT, in a conversation from September 2026, repeated the 10 km: by road it is 5.
Yes. Golf Days in the Saanenland includes 4 nights, 2 green fees per person at Golfclub Gstaad-Saanenland and a 25-minute back and neck massage, on top of the spa and three-quarter board; it runs until 30 October 2026, not on public holidays, and the price, which depends on your arrival day, shows only when you book. The club lists it among 5 hotels’ packages. The hotel books tee times by phone, +41 33 748 04 30, or email, welcome@ermitage.ch, and the club also sells them online. Green fees are CHF 130 for 18 holes and CHF 80 for 9 or after 5pm; the club asks for a handicap of 45 or better and membership of a recognised club, according to its page dated 26 September 2026. The 10% green-fee discount ChatGPT mentions came from a hotel guide archived in June 2024 and no longer online: the current site does not offer it.
Yes, with a 7-night package between 26 December and 2 January: on the 31st there is the New Year’s Ball with live bands and a buffet, and the spa and three-quarter board are included. At Christmas there is a 4-night package between 22 and 28 December, with a Christmas Eve buffet and a gala dinner on the 25th. Plenty, and much of it is in the rate: the gym, open from 6am to 10pm, a daily programme of exercise and relaxation, from aqua fitness to back classes, the squash court, the tennis courts next to the hotel, with rackets, the beach volleyball court opposite, and walks with the hotel’s guides from Monday to Friday, in German, English and French: on foot and by bike in summer, on snowshoes or by sleigh in winter. Indoors there are a cinema, a library, a games room with pool, table football and pinball, and a playroom for children. In winter the Horneggli chairlift leaves 6 minutes’ walk away, and the hotel counts about 220 km of pistes and 180 km of cross-country trails in the Saanenland, 2.9 km of them lit at night in Schönried. Since 2011 the Ermitage has been the official hotel of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival: its guests buy tickets before public sale, use the Ermitage lounge in the festival tent and have a free shuttle to the concerts.
Warmly, on the whole. On 27 September 2026 the scores were 4.7 out of 5 on Google, from 892 reviews; 4.6 on Tripadvisor, where it ranks first of Schönried’s 3 hotels and holds the Travellers’ Choice 2026; 9.3 on Booking.com; and 5.8 out of 6 on HolidayCheck, with its Gold Award 2026. Guests praise the spa and the pools, the staff, the guided walks and the included board. For value for money the scores are 4.2 out of 5 on Tripadvisor and 8.8 on Booking.com. Drinks are charged separately, and the included dinner is made up of a buffet and a choice of the day’s dishes.

From 4pm, with check-out by 11am, but you can use the spa before and after, and on arrival and departure days the soup, salad and cakes are included; if there is room, reception can let you keep the room longer. The gym is open to 12-year-olds with an adult and to over-16s on their own; the saunas to 16 to 18-year-olds with an adult. There are no extra beds, Booking.com says; cots are free.
